If you think Mercedes-Benz will slap an AMG badge on anything with wheels, think again. Word has it the German manufacturer will not offer buyers a performance version of the GLK, with Tobias Moers, director of AMG vehicle development, saying that he doesn't see a market for the car. That's not to say the picture won't change in the near future, however. According to CarAdvice.com, AMG is keeping a close eye on the arrival of the Porsche Macan.

"Maybe there will be a change in the market when the Porsche [Macan] comes up," Moers said, "but right now, no."

The real hitch in the giddy-up seems to be cost. Moers says developing the machine into something worthy of an AMG would represent "a huge investment." We can't exactly argue with that. Fortunately, AMG buyers have plenty of Mercedes-Benz models to choose from.
Next Mercedes-Benz GLK to get AMG variant?
Radio chatter around the emerging small, premium crossover coupe genre has thus far been dominated by the Land Rover Evoque and the Mini Paceman. According to a report in Car, the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (shown above) has received its invitation to the party and will spend the next three years getting ready: it's said that two-door variant of the crisply-angled CUV is coming in 2016, along with a redesign befitting its sleeker intentions.

To be based on the MRA platform - the rear-drive version of the company's three new modular platforms, it will also support the coming 2013 S-Class and could eventually get an AMG version to help it compete with segment offerings like the forthcoming Porsche Macan. Not much else is known about it beyond its name: Car says it will be called the GLC, a friendly nomenclature we remember best as a Mazda hatchback (allegedly for "Good Little Car"). Internet oldtimers may remember the Mazda GLC as the predecessor to the 323 (which in turn came before today's Mazda3). Either way, the GLC is not to be confused with the larger upcoming BMW X6 rival based on the ML-Class (reportedly called GLS) which is also said to still be in the works, or the front-drive based GLA, a model also edging toward production.
Mercedes-Benz GLK coupe to get 2016 intro originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Jan 2013 10:58:00 EST.

We admit it: It's easy to dig the Mercedes-Benz GLK. Like many of our preferred Jeep models, the GLK presents itself as a true small, rugged all-rounder that you can use just about any way you need. Yes, the rectilinear design is polarizing, but for us, the poles seem to line up more often than not. And, granted, any sort of utility vehicle that presents itself all in white or off-white - inside and out in this tester's case - with 19-inch Pirellis is going to face a ribbing by manly men. Tooth-whitening brightness and fancy shoes aside, anything that aspires to emulate - even peripherally - the rep of the legendary G-Class is welcome anytime in our driveway.

A gnarly strong off-roader? With only a 3.27:1 rear axle available and two overdrive gears, not truly, no. But get the new Offroad Engineering Package on the 4Matic chassis and the GLK thumps along with its 4.38:1 first and 2.86:1 second gears almost as well as a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X 4x4. (We picked that one because the Jeep's base price is right near that of the GLK 350 4Matic and power is roughly the same.) Trouble is that this more rugged GLK package will not be made available in North America any time soon, so the optional $2,000 4Matic all-wheel drive system - with those same ratios - will have to continue to be enough for us.

That's a shame, because our offroad activities in this updated GLK - admittedly executed in a wonderfully torque-filled GLK 350 CDI on 17-inch Bridgestones with the offroad setup prepped specifically for this event - was solid stuff. It seems U.S. dirt country roads with occasional washboarding is realistically the meanest situation envisioned for Yankee GLKs, so U.S. owners are unlikely to know just how capable their vehicle's chassis can be when properly outfitted.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jun 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Like the existing GLK but not such a fan of its incredibly boxy styling? Or like the styling just fine but just wish it had a diesel? Well we've got good news for you, friends, because Mercedes-Benz has just taken the wraps off a revised model that aims to remedy both.

Not only does the 2013 GLK-Class get the familiar new family face, but what's behind it has been replaced as well. That means a direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 for the GLK350 that's more powerful and more efficient than the powerplant it replaces, and also a 2.1-liter turbodiesel that joins the family wearing GLK250 BlueTEC badging.

The interior has been updated as well, all of which Mercedes surely hopes will help it fend off advances from the Audi Q5, the BMW X3, Volvo's XC60 and the rumored baby RX from Lexus. Take a closer look at the updated GLK in our high-res gallery of live images from the New York Auto Show floor above and the stock shots in the gallery below for a closer look.
2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK gets its diesel on originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 13:29:00 EST.
Earlier today, we showed you a brace of images starring the refreshed 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK that will make its debut at the New York Auto Show next month. But upon closer inspection, the folks at CarScoop found something very interesting hiding in the back of one of the GLK photos: the revised 2013 G-Class.

It's unclear exactly which G-Class model this is, though our best guess is that it's the standard G550. (Those wheels look much too tame for an AMG model.) The G-Wagen's overall design hasn't changed (that's fine, we like it just the way it is), but updates for the 2013 model year include LED running lamps under the headlights and redesigned mirrors.

Word on the street is that the G-Class will feature a reworked interior for 2013, including a new instrument panel, steering wheel and consoles. The big news, however, is that the G55 AMG will now make use of Merc's 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the other AMG models, though it's unclear if its nomenclature will be altered. You know, because G63 AMG absolutely makes sense.

Mum's the word on when the official G-Class details will be released, but since the car appears to be finished and already posing for photos, we don't expect Mercedes-Benz to hold off for too much longer.
Revised 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class makes easter egg appearance in GLK photos originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 17:29:00 EST.
When the doors open at Manhattahn's Javitz Center for the New York Auto Show in less than two weeks, Mercedes-Benz will have a refreshed version of its GLK-Class on display. But you needn't wait that long, as parent company Daimler has just released the full spectrum of details and photos of its updated entry-level crossover.

Decidedly evolutionary in its refresh, the 2013 GLK is characterized largely by the same sharp lines as the model it replaces, but now, the creases and sculpting is slightly more rounded and more dynamic in appearance. While the exterior has had its sharp edges smoothed out, the interior has likewise been updated, with those SLS AMG-derived retro air vents dominating the restyled dashboard and the gearshift lever moving to a stalk on the steering column in similar fashion to other recent Three-Pointed Star vehicles.

The biggest news, however, comes under the hood. While the existing GLK was only offered with a single engine, the new model will be available in two specs: the GLK350 with direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 now good for 302 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque (up from 268hp and 258 lb-ft), or the GLK250 BlueTEC diesel that, at 190 hp and 369 lb-ft, offers less power but far more twist from its 2.1 liters and four cylinders. While the updated GLK350 will be available starting in the summer, American buyers intent on the diesel will have to wait until early next year. Both are mated to a seven-speed automatic with stop-start system, and can be had in either rear-drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive.

There's plenty more to delve into in the press release after the jump, and a whole mess of high-resolution photos in the gallery, so check 'em out and watch this space for live coverage from the vehicle's unveiling in New York.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz GLK gets facelift, diesel option ahead of New York

Mercedes-Benz GLK gets facelift, diesel option ahead of New York originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 09:49:00 EST.
Even though spy shots signal that exterior adjustments on the next Mercedes-Benz GLK will be subtle, there's one giant adjustment coming under the hood, and it smells like oil - in a good way. Automotive News says the revamped softroader will gain a new diesel engine option. For its part, Mercedes-Benz hasn't said which of its oilburners it will offer with the GLK, but it's been hinted that it could be the 2.1-liter turbo diesel mill with 204 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque that sees duty in models like the C-Class and M-Class in other lands.

The addition of the GLK and next C-Class will make seven Mercedes model lines offered with diesel in the U.S. With the GLK's fuel economy addressed, the hope is that the entry-level crossover can find roughly 13,000 more buyers per year and close in on 40,000-sales-per-annum threshold. The brand already offers far more diesels than its German competitors here, but still wants to raise percentage of diesel sales from 12-to-20 percent to 15 to 20 percent.
Refreshed 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK to get diesel option originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 10:00:00 EST.
The smallest member of the Mercedes-Benz utility vehicle range, the GLK-Class has only been on the market for a couple of years now. Hardly in need of an update, then, but that hasn't stopped the Silver Star automaker from working on a little refresh for the boxy little crossover.

We first saw spy shots of a facelifted GLK being tested way back in May, and now the prototype has reared its angular head once again, this time for cold-weather testing way up in the northern lands of Sweden.

The exterior is pretty much as expected: new bumper caps front and rear, with new lights at both ends as well, including LED daytime running lamps. But for the first time, we can now see the updated interior, which adopts some of the retro cues from the SLS AMG while moving the shifter (for better or worse) from the center console to a steering-column stalk. Take a closer look for yourself in the gallery to see what Benz has in store.
Mercedes-Benz's facelifted GLK snapped inside and out originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 19:00:00 EST. Mercedes-Benz is prepping a refreshed GLK, and our spy photographers have managed to capture an example running around with a dash of camouflage covering up the revised front and rear ends.

Nothing major to report here, but it seems this future GLK will be wearing updated headlights along with re-shaped front and rear bumpers. We can see a row of LED running lamps poking out of the perforated camo up front, as well as more angular headlamp clusters. As far as updated powertrain details, we're still in the dark, but don't be surprised if the new direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 from the C350 finds its way underhood.

Clicking through the gallery below will give you an idea of what to expect when the refreshed Mercedes-Benz GLK makes an uncovered appearance.
Mercedes-Benz GLK to get a gentle nip/tuck originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 May 2011 17:29:00 EST.
We've got good news for the oil-burning fans of United States. Car and Driver is reporting that Mercedes-Benz wants to sell eight diesel models in the land of the free by 2014, and one of those will be a C-Class.

Odds are that the vehicle won't show up until 2013, and when it does, it will come packing the Silver Arrow's 2.1-liter turbo diesel mill with 204 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. That same engine is likely to find its way into the nose of the GLK as well, though the pint-sized crossover is expected to show its face sooner than its sedan cousin.

The GLK is likely to hit showrooms in the fall of this year as a 2012 model. Car and Driver says that when it does, it could bring some tasty figures to the table, including a 0-60 time in the seven second range and fuel economy in the high 30s.

Currently, Mercedes-Benz serves up a diesel option in its E, M, GL and R-Class models. The S-Class is set to join that party by the end of 2011.

If you're wishing and hoping for more diesel in the U.S., it looks like your best bet may again be placed on the Germans. Wards Automotive quotes Mercedes-Benz USA President Ernst Lieb as saying that the 2.2-liter Bluetec diesel will rest under the hood of the 2012 GLK. The oil-burning mill will likely cost a few thousand dollars more than the petrol-powered GLK, but fuel economy from the diesel four-pot will of course be vastly superior.

Mercedes reportedly won't stop with the GLK either, as the next generation C-Class will reportedly house the same Bluetec fuel-sipper. Further, the E-Class will once again receive diesel power in 2011 after a year off, rejoining the ML, GL and R-Class on the Bluetec buffet. Lieb says that diesels typically account for 12-20 percent of overall sales in the U.S. and the company is hoping to manage 15-20 percent of overall sales in the years ahead.

When you launch a vehicle during the year's most over-hyped estrogenfest, you're obviously trying to appeal to a specific demographic. Specifically, not us. There's a reason we haven't taken a crack at the Mercedes-Benz GLK until the sequel to Sex and the City hit the screen. It was just too easy to pigeonhole this cute 'ute as nothing more than a boxy four-wheeled trinket - a cynical fashion accessory designed to compliment your rat-faced pooch and Manolo Blahniks (yes, we had to look that up).

But a funny thing happened on the way down I-5.

While blasting the stereo and hauling along at a decidedly Germanic clip, all of the stereotypes about the GLK's target demographic flew out its expansive sunroof. For as much as we dislike the mere idea of "entry-level luxury" - and in particular the scads of pseudo-SUVs that populate it - the GLK started to make sense. It's well proportioned, has adequate power and comes with nearly enough amenities to match its tri-pointed badge. We actually enjoyed it, even though our manhood might've taken a hit in the process.

Volvo's new XC60 sits at the top of the pack when it battles head-to-head against the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK350, and Cadillac SRX, says Edmunds in its latest four-way comparison. The entrants, each new members of the expanding Compact Luxury Crossover segment, were all selected for the battle based on size and their less-than-$40,000 starting prices. Veterans such as the Acura RDX, BMW X3, and Infiniti EX35 were left home as they aren't rookies to the field.

With a resolutely last place finish, the Cadillac SRX was clobbered over its outward visibility, weight, lack of overall space (despite being the largest of the bunch), and cramped second-row seating. The fact that the Edmund's test car was a base FWD model didn't help either.

Tied for second place were the GLK350 and Q5, both praised for their power, ride, and handling. The Mercedes came up short in overall utility, while the Audi took some hits for its electric power steering.

According to the testers, the XC60 "won by a hair" thanks to its generous cargo capacity, second-row comfort, and "safety features galore." While the Swede offered plenty of power, it suffered from poor fuel economy and less-than-satisfying handling. So, how did a not-fun-to-drive Volvo CUV climb to the top of the comparison (one that Edmunds says, "none of our editors would personally choose")? You'll have to read their story to find out.

Mercedes-Benz plotted the sales course of its distinctively-styled GLK crossover last summer, back when there were still a lot of people ordering their new rides with all available options. With that in mind, they shipped over boatloads of optioned-up GLKs whose MSRPs were north of $40,000, well above the model's $34,775 base price. Fast forward to January of 2009, and people want their new cars with fewer add-ons, maybe even just one or two frills. That has translated into optioned-out GLK models sitting around around on lots.

According to AutoWeek, in order to redress the issue, Mercedes has created new option arrays that give the consumer more choices for less money. Instead of having to order the Premium 1 Package to get a sunroof, for example, buyers will now be able to buy the sunroof separately and keep their bottom line lower by $1,700. Navigation will now also be available as a standalone $1,800 option instead of being bundled with the Multimedia Package, saving $1,550. As a nice touch, those who already purchased their GLK in the last two months are eligible for a $2,000 refund.

Gallery: 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350

[Source: AutoWeek]

Mercedes adjusting GLK model mix, options list to kickstart sales? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 18:29:00 EST.
Click above for a hi-res gallery of the GLK SEMA show cars

Perhaps you've heard: Mercedes-Benz has this new SUV called the GLK, and it's not just the Sex and the City audience that's being targeted. The compact ute's getting-to-know-you tour will make a stop at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, where four concept versions will be on display. We already told you about RENNtech's hybrid Rally Racer show truck, and now we have some info on the other three versions that'll join it in Vegas.

Naturally, BRABUS will represent, skinning the GLK300 Bluetec in Widestar duds, new wheels, and the de rigeur custom interior. No power upgrade yet, it seems, but knowing BRABUS, they'll have a version putting out approximately a trillion horsepower by the time the GLK is in customers' hands.

Boulevard Customs is prepping the GLK "Urban Whip", a garish creation sporting 26" wheels and a front end that likely depleted the world's supply of mesh grillework. Lord knows what all the other SEMA builders are gonna do now that they're faced with this crisis.

Finally, Legendary Motor Cars will show the Four Corners Rock Crawler, which rolls on big knobby rubber, has an integrated grille guard, and sports a set of roof lights. But all that's dress-up, because off-roading's not the angle. This GLK has some winch rig that lets it pull skaters into position to then grind on the truck's integrated side rails. (G-Wagen ambulance chase vehicle not included.)

Hey, no one ever said SEMA's about being particularly normal. We'll have plenty more live shots from the show in November.

Gallery: Mercedes-Benz GLK SEMA '08 show cars

[Source: Mercedes-Benz]
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz GLK ready to storm SEMA

Mercedes-Benz GLK ready to storm SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 09:00:00 EST. Until now, the only place we've glimpsed the production version is on the set of Sex and the City. This weekend Mercedes will be unveiling the production GLK sans Kim Cattrall at the Beijing Motor Show, a.k.a. the Auto China in Bejing. We've also learned that the GLK will have only one engine available when it goes sale in the U.S. next January as a 2010 model. The sole motor will be a 268-horsepower 3.5L V6, which can be paired with a two-wheel-drive or 4MATIC all-wheel-drive platform, the latter being able to hit 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds while also returning 23 mpg on the highway. The design of the GLK, meanwhile, apes other CUVs that want to look tough despite their decidedly non-SUV underpinnings, hence all the angularity and sharp edges. Its standard ten-spoke wheels will be unusually large at 19 inches, and 20-inchers will be optional. The GLK 350 will be a true Mercedes with all the trappings of digital technology inside and a plethora of safety features, and MB is planning five option packages and nine standalone options. It'll be built at the automaker's plant in Bremen, Germany and join the R-Class, M-Class, GL-Class and G-Class as the fifth "SUV" in the Mercedes lineup. No word yet on pricing, though. Check out the first official pics of this new soft-roader in our gallery below and get the official word from Mercedes after the jump.

Gallery: 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350

[Source: Mercedes-Benz]
Continue reading Beijing '08 Preview: 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 to debut in China

Beijing '08 Preview: 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 to debut in China originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 11:29:00 EST. We can't say it necessarily helps, as the GLK still looks like something you'd place on the kitchen counter to hold your good set of knives. So many sharp angles, creases and hard lines tries to impart an air of SUV-ness to the GLK that just doesn't work as well as it does on the full-size GL SUV. Nevertheless, the GLK has some promising hardware hiding underneath its butch exterior that includes a BLUETEC four-cylinder diesel, 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission and a new 4MATIC all-wheel drive that's as efficient as a two-wheel-drive set up. We're also eager to climb inside the GLK to determine how the interior stacks up to its cross-town competition from BMW, as well as similarly sized and less expensive CUVs. There's certainly money to be made in the CUV business, but the question is how much will the GLK make for Mercedes-Benz? Look for our live coverage of the 2008 Detroit Auto Show beginning Sunday, January 13th to find out.

[Source: Mercedes-Benz]

Gallery: Mercedes-Benz GLK Vision FREESIDE

Pics Aplenty: Mercedes-Benz GLK Vision GLK FREESIDE originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 12:33:00 EST. The new compact SUV from Stuttgart will get its public debut in two weeks at the Detroit Auto Show. At 14.8-feet. long, the GLK is only about three inches longer than a Ford Escape. It borrows a lot of the sharp edged styling cues of the big GL SUV, but carries them somewhat awkwardly on its much shorter body.

The GLK Vision is powered by Daimler's latest 168-hp 2.2-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder paired up with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The diesel uses the latest fourth-gen common rail injection system that operates at 29,000 psi on the inlet side with Bluetec urea injection to clean up the exhaust. Mercedes has reworked the 4MATIC all wheel drive system to reduce friction to the point where it's as efficient as a two-wheel-drive setup. The new GLK won't show up in European showrooms until this fall with a U.S. launch planned a year from now. The Mercedes press release is after the jump for those want details straight from the automaker's mouth.

[Source: Mercedes-Benz]

Continue reading Detroit '08 Preview: Mercedes Vision GLK FREESIDE

Detroit '08 Preview: Mercedes Vision GLK FREESIDE originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 19:45:00 EST.
