According to Automotive News, the Italian automaker isn't slated to return to the U.S. with a full showroom until mid-2013 at the earliest. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has said that the brand will launch in late 2012 with a handful of limited-edition 4C Coupe models. The brand will then flesh out with a small crossover in 2013 and the manufacturer's mid-sized Giulia sedan by year's end. That plan puts a full Alfa Romeo return 10 years overdue.

Originally, the brand was supposed to re-launch on our shores back in 2003 with a new Spider model. We never saw the drop-top, and the most recent delay is said to be due to the fact that Marchionne has nixed the Giulia design three times over the past year and a half. While the Alfa Romeo 8C has been enjoying limited sales in the U.S. for months now, the 100 units that have made it off of Maserati dealer lots don't exactly define a return to mass-sales.
Alfa Romeo plans to return to the U.S. have now been delayed for 10 years originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 16:58:00 EST.

Alfa Romeo is reported delaying its return to the States until 2013 because Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne is unhappy with the proposed vehicle designs bound for the U.S. Marchionne cited manufacturing and styling issues that need fixing before the 2013 Alfa Romeo Giulia is ready to be released both in the States and abroad.

The delay pushes the Giulia back from a late-2012 release to sometime mid-2013, which leaves Alfa Romeo in the lurch in two continents. Without the Giulia, Alfa will have a gaping hole in its lineup and nothing to offer in the hotly-contested mid-range market.

Marchionne is also unhappy with efforts from Chrysler designers to retool the Giulia as a replacement for the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger, models which Fiat-Chrysler is hoping to debut in 2013. Since the two new Chryslers and the Giulia will share a platform, a delay for one means a delay for the others.

With the Giulia's release postponed, Alfa will have to make do with a three-model lineup, comprised of the MiTo, the 159 and the Guilietta, until its new small SUV arrives in late 2012, followed by the Giulia the following year.

It isn't a bad looking car, but like a previous speculative take on the car, it look like the Mito nose has simply been pasted on another rear end - in this case, that of the Opel Insignia.

In MT's image, The commanding squarness of the current car, especially set off by the angry nose, have been forsaken for a rising, widening body that still offers a commanding stance aided by a giant set of wheels. We're fans of the convex rear, but the bluff sides of the mockup and the C-pillar's run into the haunches takes us back to the General Motors car.

The Giulia is due to go on sale in Europe in the latter half of 2011, so we probably won't see the real thing until later next year.
