The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of over 100,000 Suzuki models. The NHTSA recall extends to certain 2004-2006 Suzuki Forenza models and 2005-2006 Reno vehicles, These were vehicles produced from September 2003 through March 2006.

A poor contact in the headlight terminals can result in the splice pack melting, resulting in partial or complete loss of headlamp functionality.

Suzuki is notifying owners of the Pininfarina-designed sedan and Giugiaro-penned hatch of the problem and instructing dealers to reconnect effected headlight wiring with a pair of a heat-shrink crimps.

Owners are asked to contact Suzuki or NHTSA. The recall of 101,688 units is expected to begin in September. Scroll down to read more in the government agency's official notice.

Continue reading Suzuki recalling 101,000 Forenza, Reno models over faulty headlamps

Suzuki recalling 101,000 Forenza, Reno models over faulty headlamps originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 11:00:00 EST. What's Italian for thrilling? The Italdesign Giugiaro Brivido. (Well, it's Italian for 'thrill' anyway.) And we see what they're on about. The underpinnings come from parent company Volkswagen, including the supercharged 3.0-liter 360-horsepower V6 engine and eight-speed automatic gearbox. Coupled with an electric motor, this hybrid GT can scoot to 60 in 5.8 seconds while exhausting just 154 grams per kilometer of carbon dioxide. Slippery aerodynamics allow for a top speed of 171 miles per hour and also provide a sleek shape that can seat four passengers in comfort.

Though Giugiaro is quick to point out that this is a fully functional prototype, it's got concept written all over it. Take, for instance, the giant gullwing doors that serve as portals for the front and rear seats, the two-sided instrument cluster full of LCD screens (including an iPad for the passenger) and joystick-style steering apparatus.

And if one Brivido Concept is good, two Brivido Concepts must be even better. Giugiaro brought along a second machine in race trim (above), sporting distinctive Martini Racing livery. We don't have any details on what's underneath the fetching bodywork, so we suggest you see it for yourself in our high-res image galleries above and below. Feel free to read all about the road-going Brivido below, where you'll also find an official video.
Continue reading Giugiaro Brivido Concept is Italian for thrilling [w/video]

Giugiaro Brivido Concept is Italian for thrilling [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 14:59:00 EST.
The Volkswagen Group is comprised of 11 brands producing 240 vehicles across 49 factories throughout the world. So the best way to show off the range of the VW family is to cram a few thousand journalists and VIPs into a massive makeshift stand to outline the Group's goals, what's in the pipeline and what you'll be able to buy later this year.

To that end, VW pulled out all the stops on the eve of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, bringing along 10 vehicles from across the range. We'll be delving into the details of each over the next two days of show coverage, but before that happens, you can read all about what we saw tonight from the cheap seats after the break.
Continue reading Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show

Volkswagen Group previews its wares on eve of Geneva show originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 16:55:00 EST. So with Pininfarina, Bertone and Carrozzeria Touring all having released glimpses of the designs they will be unveiling this year at the Palexpo, so has ItalDesign Giugiaro.

As you can see, there's not much we can tell from this detail rendering, but what it does tell us is that the concept in question will be high-performance in orientation. Or at least look the part, anyway - minivans, hybrids and city cars seldom call for big air intakes like this one.

While formerly an independent design house, these days ItalDesign is owned by Volkswagen. Its last couple of designs - the Tex and the Go! - have both worn VW badges on the nose, so we'd expect this year's to sport one as well, although another brand in the group could get the action this time. What we wouldn't expect is for the show car to presage any specific production vehicle as much as outline a styling ethos for the German automaker. Watch this space for more.
ItalDesign Giugiaro hints at Geneva-bound Volkswagen concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 08:29:00 EST.
If you had asked us just a few days ago if Giorgetto Giugiaro was behind the design of any production Lamborghini, we probably would have answered, Sure, he must have...right? Wrong. Because none of Lamborghini's road cars ever bore the famed designer's lines.

Bertone styled a few, but those only came years after Giugiaro left for Ghia and then went independent with ItalDesign. Over the course of his later career, he did a couple of design studies for the Raging Bull marque - like the Marco Polo of 1982 and the 1995 Cala concept. But though the latter, it could be claimed, eventually lead to the Gallardo (with a very different design), neither of these ever reached production. But this one almost did. Or at least maybe it should have.

Back in the early 1960s, Lamborghini was still making tractors. But word on the street was that old Ferruccio was bent on showing up Enzo Ferrari with a sportscar of his own. So a number of design houses started submitting proposals, unsolicited. Pininfarina, Ghia, Vignale and Michelotti were among those who vied for the contract, but Carrozzeria Touring eventually won out with the 350 GT, based on the work of former Bertone stylist Franco Scaglione.

Now, some fifty years later, an original design submitted by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro, still working at Bertone, has surfaced. And not just in renderings, either. The designer's son Fabrizio digitized his father's sketches, milled them into a model, painted it yellow, detailed the body and put it on a set of period-correct Borrani wires.

The design, as you can plainly see, was way ahead of its time. If you're thinking it reminds you of the Ferrari P3 or 250 LM, or like one of the Alfa Romeo BAT designs, think again, because none of those - nor anything like it - came along until years later. The result was presented to Giorgetto as a 70th birthday present, and is now prominently displayed at the company's design headquarters in Moncalieri, just nine miles south of Turin. But if you're not planning on visiting the area any time soon, you can check it out in our high-resolution image gallery.
Giugiaro's original Lamborghini design unearthed and realized 50 years later originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Jul 2011 16:55:00 EST.
Famed coachbuilder and industrial design studio Italdesign Guigiaro has released a free app for the Apple iPad that tracks the history of this famous design house since its founding by Giorgetto Giuguaro in 1968.

The app features a brief introduction that runs along the timeline from 1968 to 2030, showing key moments in Italdesign's past and future. You'll see Giugiaro with the Bizzarini Manta, the Alfa Romeo Alfasud and the Fiat Punto as the intro sequence plays out.

The iPad app's release follows Italdesign's new website launch last July, and its Geneva Motor Show-specific page for last year's show. If you're looking to download it, the Italdesign Giugiaro app is now available in App Stores worldwide. Click here to download it now from the iTunes Store or follow the jump for more details if you're still on the fence.

Now that Italdesign Giugiaro is part of the larger Volkswagen Group, the famed design house has worked up a pair of VW-badged concepts for the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. In addition to the smaller Tex hatchback, Giugiaro has created the Go! MPV, giving us a glimpse at what a people-mover for The People could look like in the future.

Like the Tex, the Go! rides on Volkswagen's new modular transverse architecture which could accommodate a wide range of powertrain options. Here, the Go! is powered by the automaker's Blue-e-motion EV technology, and according to Volkswagen, the concept can travel about 150 miles on electric power alone.

The Go! is full of interesting design quirks, such as rear doors that push backwards before sliding back parallel to the vehicle, a large glass greenhouse and a high seating position. See for yourself in our gallery of high-resolution live shots below.

Says Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of Volkswagen Group, "Italdesign is a figurehead of Italian design and engineering creativity. We have been working together closely in a spirit of partnership for many decades." In reality, that may be an understatement. After all, Giorgetto Giugiaro is credited with penning the original Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit and Scirocco - two classic shapes that went on to define the VW brand for the last few decades.

After a research study to determine what Volkswagen vehicles of the future may look like, Giugiaro (now owned by the Volkswagen Group) focused on two distinct concepts, one of which is the Go! that you see here (the other is the Tex, which we've already shown you). The design firm thinks of the Go! as a multi-purpose vehicle for urban areas, and as such, it measures just four-meters in length and runs solely on electricity using VW's proprietary Blue-e-motion EV technology. According to the automaker, the Go! is capable of traveling about 150 miles on electric power alone.

Like the Tex, the Go! concept uses VW's modular transverse architecture, which was designed to accomade a diverse range of powertrain options, including plug-ins, internal combustion engines and even hydrogen fuel cells. Despite the Go!'s relatively dimunitive exterior dimensions, its 106-inch wheelbase matches that of the larger Passat. The battery pack sits beneath the passenger compartment, covering the areas of both the front and rear-seat passengers.

VW and Giugiaro are keen to highlight the large glass area of the Go! concept. Such a configuration allows for plenty of natural light and offers maximum visibility. Interestingly, though, only the lower part of the glass is actually electrically lowered (have a look at the image gallery below to see what we mean), and the concept relies on video cameras to give the driver a view of his or her surroundings.

Other interesting design details include rear doors that push outwards and pull back parallel to the vehicle, a high seating position that caters to drivers who prefer the visibility of an SUV and the control panel that is placed at the base of the windshield, well back from its normal location behind the steering wheel.
Earlier this year, famed design house Italdesign Giugiaro became part of the Volkswagen Group, and the longtime collaborators are are presenting their first joint concepts at the Geneva Motor Show this week.

The Italian design firm calls the Tex an "interpretation of tomorrow's sporty Volkswagen," incorporating coupe-like lines into a hatchback shape. In execution, it looks a bit like the current Euro-spec Honda Civic hatch to our eyes - especially up front. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but if we're honest, we expected something a little bolder from the company that has penned some of the most gorgeous designs of all time.

The Tex Concept is powered by Volkswagen's Twin Drive plug-in hybrid system, which we're told has a range of 35 kilometers (about 21 miles) with just the battery driving the wheels.

Inside, the Tex uses a driver-focused cockpit, and unlike the vast majority of concept cars that we'll be seeing in Geneva, the Giugiaro interior looks nearly production-ready. We like the implementation of the flat-bottomed steering wheel, supportive seats and funky new shift knob.

While the Tex is merely a concept right now, there's no telling if Volkswagen will use this as a basis for a future sports car, perhaps even a Golf or GTI far along down the road. Hit the jump to read the full details in Volkswagen's press release, and see the Italdesign Giugiaro Tex Concept for yourself in both of our high-res image galleries below.

Giorgetto Giuigiaro and his Italdesign studio have a long history of collaboration with the Volkswagen Group. In addition to having designed the original Golf and Scirocco, Guigiaro has penned a whole slew of showcars for the German automotive empire from the Volkswagen W12 concept to the numerous Seat designs, to say nothing of all the Lamborghini and Bugatti models over the years. But the relationship between Italdesign and Volkswagen grew that much closer when the latter acquired the former last May. Now close to a year later, we have our first glimpse at the first product of that collaboration in the form of two concept cars.

The pair were apparently leaked from the European patent registry and could be Giugiaro's vision of the form which the next-generation Golf and Polo might take. Or they could represent the next Scirocco and the production Up! urban runabout. Word has it that they're electric powered, and could be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next week. We'll have to sit tight to find out for sure, but in the meantime you can check out the images of both in the gallery below.

1974 Volkswagen Scirocco designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro

The Volkswagen Group has completed its takeover of Italdesign Giugiaro (IDG) with the purchase of a 90.1 percent stake in the design studio. The shares in the company were purchased by Lamborghini - "owned" by VW Group member Audi - and the remaining 9.9 stake is still in the hands of the Giugiaro family. The buyout was originally reported back in May of this year and the studio/small volume manufacturer are now part of the ever-expanding auto conglomerate. The top management of the company, including founder/chairman Giorgetto Giugiaro and his son and vice-president Fabrizio, remain in place.

Volkswagen and IDG have a relationship going back decades, when the elder Giugiaro penned the 1970 Volkswagen Porsche Tapiro Concept as well as the first generation Golf and Scirocco. It's unclear if IDG will continue working with outside clients or will now dedicate itself to VW Group projects.

Hail a taxi in most American cities, and what are you likely to ride in? A Ford Crown Vic, maybe a minivan or an Escape Hybrid. But a few lucky residents of Rome had something decidedly more exotic recently when stoic carrozzeria Italdesign-Giugiaro outfitted its Quaranta concept with a meter, dome light and white paintjob to pull taxi duty around the Italian capital. Brave of them - have you ever tried navigating the overcrowded streets of Rome on anything larger than a Vespa? Good luck.

The Quaranta concept was unveiled at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show to commemorate the design house's 40th anniversary. The exotic shape is powered by the Toyota Synergy Drive found in the Lexus RX400h, complete with 3.3-liter V6, electric motor and continuously variable transmission and supplemented by solar panels. Billed (at the time, at least) as the world's fastest hybrid, the Quaranta is said to be capable of shuttling its occupants - or paying fare, in this case - to sixty in 4.2 seconds. Now, to the Spanish Steps, double-time!

If Proton is going to make it on the global scene amidst the big players, it's going to need some help. Fortunately for the Malaysian state-owned automaker, help isn't far behind.

With the world's major carmakers bringing more and more of their design and manufacturing work in-house, firms like ItalDesign Giugiaro have been left scrounging for new clients. Proton is one such, and this is what they came up with: the Emas city car concept.

A sharp design - rendered in five-door, three-door and outback-style Country forms - will get Proton only so far. For the mechanical side of things, they had but to turn to their (relatively) recent acquisition, Lotus. The British engineering firm developed the Lotus Range Extender hybrid powertrain propelling the Emas - to say nothing of the new Evora 414E hybrid - and by all indications had a hand in the chassis development as well, a traditional core competence for the makers of the Elise and Exige.

Will the spritely Proton make it to production? There's no official confirmation yet, but you don't bring in ringers - some of the best in the field at that - unless you're planning on making a run for the pennant. While the regular season is in progress, why not have a look at our live shots in the gallery below.
2002 ItalDesign Alfa Romeo Brera Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Following up on a model as achingly gorgeous as the Alfa Romeo 159 - to say nothing of its Brera coupe and Spider convertible counterparts - is no mean feat. Which could be why Alfa is turning to the considerable pool of talent at its doorstep. According to the latest reports, three Italian design houses will be displaying their ideas of what the next-gen mid-size Alfa should look like.

If the source quoted by Inside Line proves accurate, at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, Stile Bertone will show off a two-door coupe, with a Pininfarina-penned convertible and an ItalDesign Giugiaro four-door sedan sharing the stage as potential candidates to succeed the 159/Brera/Spider line-up. Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo will be taking the wraps off the new Giulietta at its own show stand.

It's worth noting that Giugiaro was responsible for the original concept car that spurred Alfa to put the Brera into production, and Pininfarina was responsible for the car's assembly. And with Bertone also in the mix, this is one fight we're looking forward to seeing unfold on the floor of the Geneva Palexpo.

Hybrid Kinetic Automotive Corp. rendering - click above to enlarge

The headline is attention-grabbing. A former Chinese auto executive is proposing a $6 billion plant in economically-distressed north Mississippi that will employ 25,000 people and produce one million cars a year.

Automotive News' story is both intriguing and complicated - and not just because three players are named Wang, one is named Yang - so buckle up for the short-and-sweet Autoblog version.

Yang Rong was once China's third-richest man as the CEO of Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. But after some disagreements with a Chinese government official in 2002, Yang fled the country and settled in Los Angeles.

Cars are only one of the reasons Yang wants to build $6.5 billion plant in Mississippi (that's six times the cost of Toyota's Mississippi plant, by the way). Another is green cards. When Yang left China, he also left his fortune and has apparently been unable to recoup any of it. It's a scary scenario that many wealthy Chinese fear: upset the government, lose your money. But the U.S. government makes it easy for Chinese residents to both invest their cash in America, as well as move here. Invest a minimum of $500,000 in an economically distressed region of the U.S., creating at least 10 jobs, and you get permanent resident status.

Vincent Wang, an associate of Yang's, says Italdesign Giugiaro is designing the new venture's cars, and documents show Porsche AG providing "our car's engineering design." Giugiaro confirms it has talked with the group, Porsche essentially says it has no comment. Such a controversial car must be powered by something just as unusual, right? Oh, yeah. The CEO of the project, C.T. Wang, tells Automotive News, the cars will be "powered by a combination of gasoline, electric, hybrid and compressed-natural-gas powertrains."

Yang calls his project, Hybrid Kinetic Automotive Holdings, Ltd. One of Yang's former associates has split from the group and also plans to build an automotive plant. That company is now called GreenTree Automotive, after being forced to change its name from Hybrid Kinetic Automotive Corp. Yeah.
If you're at all familiar with the name Frazer-Nash, it probably isn't in the context of modern drivetrain technology like hybrid systems. Nonetheless, the brand that was long ago a famous British car maker is still around, albeit no longer building cars. In fact, hybrid drive systems is exactly what Frazer Nash is developing today and the company has collaborated with Italdesign Giugiaro to create a concept called the Namir.

Frazer Nash has developed a series hybrid drivetrain (like the Voltec drivetrain in the Chevy Volt) that uses an 814cc rotary engine driving a generator. The generator charges a 400V lithium polymer battery pack that feeds electrons to a pair of electric motors at each axle with a cumulative output of 362 hp. The system is claimed to give the Namir a top speed of 187 mph, 0-62 mph acceleration in 3.5 seconds while still managing 91.7 mpg (US)! Not too shabby.

Gallery: Geneva 2009: Giugiaro Frazer Nash Namir

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Geneva 2009: Frazer-Nash Namir by Giugiaro originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 13:58:00 EST. But his most recent design exercise -- the Italdesign Quaranta, shown at last year's Geneva Motor Show -- was a clear indication that he was moving beyond bespoke bodywork and taking a long look into the future of the automobile.

At this year's Geneva expo, he'll take the wraps off another hybrid concept that appears to evolve the Quaranta design and the (theoretical) drivetrain underneath. Judging by the teaser, it's decidedly more sleek than its predecessor, dropping the blocky '80s aesthetic of the Quaranta and packing a powertrain that will supposedly propel the gas-electric coupe to 186 mph. If the same 270 hp, 3.3-liter V6 hybrid employed on the Quaranta migrates to this new concept, expect an all-wheel-drive system with a duo of electric motors powering the front wheels and a claimed 0-60 time of around four seconds.

Although there's some confusion about the name (there are rumors of the "Frasier Nash" nameplate being revived), we'll be able to get all the details from the show floor in Geneva next month.

Gallery: Italdesign Giugiaro Quaranta Concept

[Sources: Caradisiac, AutoblogGreen]
Geneva Preview: Giugiaro concept claimed to be the world's fastest hybrid originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 18:58:00 EST.
Some years back I got to meet Giorgietto Giugiaro, the ultra-famous Italian car designer. "Gosh," I gushed, "you certainly are a visionary. Twenty years ago you said that the one-box design would become the dominant body style in the future. And you were right."

"No, you're wrong," he corrected me matter of factly, "I said that thirty years ago."

Giugiaro knew that getting the "mostest with the leastest" is the greatest challenge a designer faces. And he knew that a one-box design provides the greatest amount of interior room with the smallest exterior package. So, he openly declared that in the future more and more cars would adopt one-box designs.

A quick tutorial here for the uninitiated in designer lingo. A one-box design is just what it implies, a box on wheels, like a cargo van. A two-box design is like a station wagon, with one box for the passenger compartment and one for the engine compartment. A three-box design is like a traditional sedan with one box for the engine compartment, one for the passenger cabin, and one for the trunk.

For most of automotive history, automakers stuck with the three-box design. Traditionalists to the core, they never ventured too far from what was popular. But while the mass manufacturers stayed with the tried and true, others did dare to experiment.

Beauty may be in the eye of the proverbial beholder and all that, but the Italdesign Quaranta wasn't quite the beauty of the Geneva ball. And while Giorgetto Giugiaro, the celebrated designer at the studio's helm, has more iconic designs to his name than we could possibly list here, his latest was not his best, easily outclassed by the Giugiaro Mustang concept with which we fell so deeply in love and the Ferrari GG50 he built for himself.

The Quaranta concept was built to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Italdesign Giugiaro, and features the Lexus RX400h's mid-mounted hybrid 3.3-liter V6 powerplant driving all four wheels through a CVT and supported by a solar panel on the unfortunately styled nose. Think of archrival Pininfarina's Maserati Birdcage concept crossed with Robocop 3 and you're beginning to get the picture. While we're reassured by the knowledge that this is purely a design study and has no chance of seeing production, we wonder what the future holds if this is what's supposedly pointing towards it.

We managed to assuage our angst long enough to snap off a few photos, which we've added to the gallery below along with the images released by the studio.

It seems like the design houses got together and decided to torture us for a few weeks leading up to this year's Geneva Motor Show. Pininfarina's been killing us slowly with the agonizing inch-by-inch unveiling of its Sintesi show car, the Bertones are playing cat and mouse about showing up with their BAT 11 concept altogether, even Giugiaro has joined in the fun.

A third image of Italdesign's forthcoming concept car has now surfaced ahead of schedule, giving us another hint at the design house's latest. Sources suggest it could be called the Quaranta ("forty" in Italiano) to commemorate the firm's fortieth anniversary, while the slogan "nature has never been so powerful" adorning the Italdesign-Giugiaro website suggests the concept will feature some sort of conceptual environmentally-friendly powertrain. With one week to go, we'll just have to sit tight and wait for the car's official debut, which is sure to be flanked by more curvaceous Italian models rivaling even their employer's penchant for teasing.

Gallery: Giugiaro Quaranta concept

[Source: Giugiaro via Jalopnik]
Geneva '08 Preview: Giugiaro-Italdesign releases 3rd teaser image originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 13:29:00 EST.
