The holidays are almost here and your gearhead loved ones need presents. Badly. But what to get them? Well, we like tools. Gloves to protect us from grease, too. Oh, and we love models of cars. Of course most spouses we know don't really want tools, gloves or small cars sitting on the coffee table. So what about a nice book?

You're in luck, as there are lots of books about cars, usually filled with lovely pictures that look totally fabulous when displayed proudly in the living room (says us). Speaking of books, one of our favorite authors, P.J. O'Rourke, reviewed a new book for the New York Times called Cars: Freedom, Style, Sex, Power, Motion, Colour, Everything.

If you don't know, O'Rourke is one of our favorite authors because he refuses to pull punches. Like this, "Buy this book, but don't read it." Why would P.J. recommend purchasing a book but not reading it? Well, as he tells it, the pictures are beautiful but the words aren't. As O'Rourke says towards the end of his review of Cars, "I have no idea what he's talking about." Still, the pictures look good.
Three base models in 1/43 scale are available: Quattroporte, Quattroporte S, and Granturismo S. From there you can choose from among seven exterior and two interior colors, four or five different brake caliper colors, two or three different kinds of rims, and select a sunroof which is made of glass. No, it doesn't open.

You can even select a personalized license plate written in one of four fonts. Naturally, once you're finished, you can buy it. The models are €230 ($320 US), which includes shipping, and are sent within 30 days. If your Maserati doesn't match your expectations, you can return it (good luck doing that with a real car). If you don't want to go all the way then you can just display your modeling prowess in the virtual showroom. Everybody wins.

[Source: Maserati]
Spec out your own Maserati - in 1/43 scale originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 18:32:00 EST.
Click above for image gallery of the Bend Rod Garage Challenger sculptures

We've come to that time of year when hear sentences that sound like this: "You wanted X (insert obscenely out-of-reach gift here), but that didn't work out so let us present Y!" And Y is always some little tchotchke that relentlessly reminds you that you don't have the X you want. Well, that's not the case with these Dodge Challenger sculptures, because we want one of them even though we're not in the market for an actual Challenger. The 12-inch resin sculptures made by Bent Rod Garage come in three factory colors, are limited to a run of just 300 units and will only cost you $120 out the door. Check out the gallery of images below, visit Bent Rod Garage for yourself and see if you think there's a better way to say "funky" this holiday season. Thanks for the tip, Tobias!

Gallery: Bent Rod Garage Challenger Series

[Source: Bent Rod Garage via Musclecars]
We want Limited Edition Dodge Challenger sculptures originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 13:58:00 EST. Abandoning the old wall calendar for the digital domain is clearly a mistake if we have to give up looking at vehicles like these 365 days of the year. Porsche's new set of official 2007 calendars includes three large, traditional wall calendars and one date planner. Each calendar has a theme, like "Symphony of Colors" that shows various locations where the featured car's color either starkly contrasts with the surroundings or blends in. There's also "On the Move" that shows us behind the scenes of Porsche's museum collection and "Design... turbocharged" (shown above) that displays various design sketches and views of the new 911 Turbo from the men and women who designed it. Finally, the smaller date planner features 50 years of Porsche advertisements going all the way from 1957 up to the present. You can order the calendars at Porsche's website, and we suspect more than a few a Porsche-o-philes will find these under the tree at Christmas.

Follow the jump for a couple more pics of calendar pages.

[Source: Porsche]
Continue reading Porsche makes time fly with new calendars

Porsche makes time fly with new calendars originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Oct 2006 13:01:00 EST.
This is one we missed for Father's Day... Yes! A chess set made out of car parts. The Renault F1 Team Collection Chess Set features all the widgets one might find in your typical F1 vehicle -- carbon fiber for the game board, titanium and aircraft-grade aluminum suspension and wing bits to serve as the pieces, and other parts that could be mistaken for a bishop until one decides to perform a closer examination. The only thing not so cool about it is the price -- this baby will set you back close to $39,000, like almost how much a Lotus Elise costs. We hope you *really* like chess.
