Hyundai is gearing up to show five commercials during this year's Super Bowl, and you've probably already seen one of them called Don't Tell that's been airing on television for weeks now. The Korean automaker has released two of the other four ads, though it looks like it might keep the headlining ad for the three-row Santa Fe, called Epic PlayDate, under wraps until the big game.

Of the two ads published on YouTube, we like Stuck the most, which features the Sonata Turbo. It presents all of the horrid things you could be stuck behind on the highway as reason enough for buying a boosted Sonata with its ample passing power.

The other commercial, called Excited, features the 2013 Hyundai Genesis. Our funny bone didn't tingle much with this one, and it contains a grammar bugaboo that's a pet peeve of some editors in the Autoblog virtual offices. Can you spot it? Scroll below to take the challenge and let us know in the comments.
Continue reading Hyundai shows us two more Super Bowl commercials

Hyundai shows us two more Super Bowl commercials originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Jan 2013 19:15:00 EST.
Hyundai is showing no signs of slowing down, with plenty of new product in the pipeline. This, according to a recent Automobile magazine interview with John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai Motor America.

Krafcik admits the Korean automaker is considering adding a four-door coupe to its lineup, possibly sharing some design elements of the HCD-14 Concept (shown above in Detroit). The brand's flagship Equus luxury sedan will receive a mild refresh, bowing at the New York Auto Show, and an updated Sonata is expected to follow on its heels. The executive dismissed suggestions of an upcoming current-gen V8 Genesis Coupe, saying the present platform cannot accommodate a V8, but an eight-cylinder engine or a turbocharged V6 is a possibility for its eventual successor.

Check out what the CEO had to say about Audi, why the new Honda Accord has Hyundai reconsidering a technology, and read a followup on the company's fuel-economy fiasco in the full interview at Automobile.
Hyundai mulling four-door coupe model, V8 or V6 turbo for next Genesis Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Jan 2013 15:45:00 EST.
Don't let those Kias in the back of this photo fool you - the camouflaged car you're looking at here is the next-generation Hyundai Genesis. Remember, we've already seen Kia's new rear-wheel-drive flagship - the oh-so-suavely named Quoris - so this big roller is indeed the successor to Hyundai's Genesis sedan.

Codenamed "DH," the Genesis will ride on an updated version of Hyundai's rear-wheel-drive architecture, though as we've reported several times, all-wheel drive is also likely in the cards for the new model. Other DH enhancements will be the shedding of some weight - as much as a couple hundred pounds - and a sportier tuning.

Design wise, the new Genesis will get a much sleeker, more upscale look - something that's evident even with all of the camo glued to this test car. Up front there are revised LED running lamps, swoopier styling, and more elegant taillamps out back.

Powertrain options aren't expected to change too much, with the 3.8-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 carrying over with only some simple massaging. Eight-speed automatic transmissions will be fitted across the board (like they are now), though a rumored ten-speed automatic 'box is even said to be in the works.

Look for the new Genesis to bow sometime next year.
Next-gen Hyundai Genesis spied for the first time originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Dec 2012 16:33:00 EST.
Red Bull is one of those companies with its fingers in every corner of the sports world. It's easy to forget just how far those sponsorship dollars have spread since the brand's early days, but a clever new video showcasing some of the brightest stars of the Red Bull family is out to remind us there's nowhere the energy drink manufacturer won't advertise.

In what could very well be the world's oddest Rube Goldberg machine - Red Bull calls it a Kluge, which means a jury-rigged device or offbeat workaround - pro skaters Joey Brezinski and Ryan Sheckler, hurdler Lolo Jones, sky diver Sean MacCormac and motocross rider Robbie Maddison team up with one truck racer Bryce Menzies and Rhys Millen in his Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car to free a can of Red Bull from a block of ice.

Excessive? Sure, but remember, this is the same company that put a man at the edge of space just so he could jump back down again. Other Red Bull-branded athletes make an appearance as well, including pro golfer Rickie Fowler and snowboarder Pat Moore. Check out the whole cast in the clip below.
Continue reading Red Bull Rube Goldberg machine uses Ram trophy truck, Hyundai Genesis

Red Bull Rube Goldberg machine uses Ram trophy truck, Hyundai Genesis originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 19:58:00 EST.
Hyundai has brought along two high-performance Genesis Coupes to the SEMA Show to augment is huge fleet of Velosters, Elantras and other modified Korean goodies. We've already dropped the knowledge on both the Cosworth Genesis Racing Series Concept (above, right in blue) - tuned by Cosworth, as you can probably tell - and the Genesis Coupe R-Spec (above, left) that was tuned by ARK Performance.

To recap: the ARK car is rocking 395 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque from its 3.8-liter V6. The Cosworth car, meanwhile, is pumping out 389 horses from its V6 - and despite the name, neither Cosworth nor Hyundai has announced an actual racing series for the car. Have a gander at both in our galleries of live images, here and here.
Hyundai Genesis Coupes from ARK Performance and Cosworth at SEMA originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 18:21:00 EST.
The Hyundai Genesis sedan may have been given a full mid-cycle refresh just last year, but we've now learned that some more changes are in store for the 2013 model. Sure, the car looks exactly the same (because it is), but there are indeed some tweaks both under the hood and inside the cabin.

First and foremost, kiss the 4.6-liter Tau V8 goodbye. Hyundai's first eight-cylinder engine is being discontinued in the Genesis, leaving only the 3.8-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8. Fine by us - if we're honest, we never saw much need for the 4.6 after that slick new 429-horsepower 5.0 was introduced. That said, Hyundai is also discontinuing the standard 5.0-liter model, meaning you have to option up to the R-Spec trim to get V8 power. All other Genesis sedan models will use the V6.

Hyundai has given its interior tech a bit of a freshening for 2013 by including its Blue Link suite of telematics services and adding an eight-inch display to the center stack with a redesigned version of the joystick multimedia controller (read: the big knob on the center console). The automaker says that the new interface is much more intuitive, and it uses a 64GB solid-state drive (SSD). Most automakers don't tout the type of hard drive used by their infotainment systems, but despite their higher price, solid-state drives are quickly gaining popularity in laptop computers for their durability and speed, and this is the first we've heard of them being used in an automotive infotainment system.

Check out the rest of Hyundai's nitty gritty details in the press release below.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Genesis ditches 4.6L V8, gains eight-inch nav and 64GB SSD

2013 Hyundai Genesis ditches 4.6L V8, gains eight-inch nav and 64GB SSD originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 11:01:00 EST.
According to Automotive News, Hyundai is working on a smaller rear-wheel-drive car aimed squarely at the BMW 3 Series. Reportedly dubbed "RK" internally, this new model will not launch until 2015 at the earliest, according to the report.

Details on this new entry-level performance sedan are slim, with Automotive News only reporting that the new model will use a version of the rear-wheel-drive platform that underpins the Genesis Coupe.

In other RWD Hyundai news, AN states that the larger Genesis sedan is still on track for a complete refresh, with the new model expected to arrive by the end of 2013 at the earliest as a 2014 model. As we've reported before, the next-generation Genesis will also likely benefit from optional all-wheel drive. Hyundai's Equus flagship is also scheduled to get a slight refresh in the near term, debuting next summer for the 2014 model year.
Hyundai working on 3 Series-fighter for 2015 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 13:02:00 EST.
In a surprise move, the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe has shaken up its segment by adding an arrow to its competitive set - that's right, as in "Bow and...". Trying to answer the question of whether the 348-horsepower two-door can go faster than a bow-powered arrow, the company put an archer and bulls-eye in one lane of a runway and a Genesis Coupe in the other.

We won't tell you which one wins. We will tell you that one of them gets a serious head start. And Hyundai will tell you that "This scene is 100% real. There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film." Scroll down to check it out.
Continue reading Hyundai pits 2013 Genesis Coupe against... an archer?

Hyundai pits 2013 Genesis Coupe against... an archer? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 16:57:00 EST.
We so wanted to lead this post with a Jim Belushi joke. Alas, the Kia press release announcing the launch of its rear-drive flagship in Korea today specifically clarifies that the K9 will be renamed for other markets.

While Kia says the large sedan rides on "its own platform," we know enough about the auto industry to posit that much of that platform is shared with the underpinnings of corporate cousin Hyundai's Genesis Sedan and Equus. Like the Hyundai pair, Kia is clearly hoping the not-called-K9-here will help the brand move upmarket, positioning the car as a premium product designed, in the words of Kia's head of design Peter Schreyer, "to compete head-to-head with the European luxury brands."

The Kia sedan will split the difference between the Genesis and the Equus, matching the 120-inch wheelbase of the latter, but with an overall length of 200 inches that's three inches shorter than Equus and almost four inches longer than the Genesis. The Kia sedan will have the same 0.27 coefficient of drag as both the Hyundai models.

Kia says its luxury sedan will be powered by two distinct versions of the corporate 3.8-liter Lambda V6, one making 286 horsepower and the direct-injection version rated at 329. The more powerful engine is said to be "joining the global engine line-up next year," which we'd expect would coincide with the flagship sedan's U.S. launch. Both engines will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Kia says the car will be available with a number of safety features including a lane-departure warning system and blind sport detection. A reclining rear seat with leg rest will also be available, just like in the Equus.

Today's announcement raises an interesting possibility. While we wouldn't expect Kia to send its flagship stateside with the less-powerful V6 - indeed, a V8 engine option is surely bound to accompany an official statement of the car's U.S. sales plan - doing so would certainly allow Kia to bring the car to market at a more attractive entry-level price. Kia has a scant resume when it comes launching anything other than budget models here in the U.S., and the brand certainly has considerable work to do if it aims to catch up to Hyundai in pricier segments.

It will certainly be interesting to see where Kia tries to position its unnamed sedan - and whether its (*ahem*) dogged pursuit of the luxury dollar will succeed.
Hyundai has once again partnered up with Rhys Millen, this time to create a new 2013 Genesis Coupe fit to take on Formula Drift. The specially prepared two-door boasts more then 600 horsepower thanks to careful tweaking by the minds at RMR. That's a far cry from the 274 hp served up by the stock 2.0-liter turbo four, and so far, Millen is keeping the secret of how he pulled that much grunt from the four-pot to himself. We're guessing this machine has been touched by the gods of forced-induction in all the right ways.

While Millen and his track-bred heathen are out vaporizing tires, Hyundai fans will have a chance to pour over the company's other wares and compete for race gifts while at the track. This marks the fourth consecutive year Hyundai and Millen have partnered up, and this year, he'll be the exclusive driver for the company at all Formula Drift events. Last year, the RMR team took first place in Las Vegas and runner up at Irwindale. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Hyundai shows Millen's updated-for-2013 Genesis Coupe drift car

Hyundai shows Millen's updated-for-2013 Genesis Coupe drift car originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 13:01:00 EST.

The Hyundai Genesis Sedan and Chrysler 300S are much more alike than they are different.

Why compare a Hyundai to a Chrysler? At first glance, this matchup may seem rather preposterous, but a logical argument says this rivalry has been in place for more than a decade. In 2002, Chrysler and Hyundai were both offering full-size front-wheel-drive sedans. Hyundai had its XG350 fitted with a 194-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, while Chrysler was touting its Concorde with a 214-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 (each shared an EPA rating of 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway). Not only were both remarkably similar on paper, but both sedans started at about $25,000.

Today, Hyundai and Chrysler remain in the full-size arena with products that are infinitely more interesting, significantly more powerful and immeasurably more engaging to drive - they also happen to be the only two rear-wheel-drive luxury sedans left in this price segment.

Sensing an interesting fight, we rounded up a 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan and a 2012 Chrysler 300S for a driving comparison. After several hundred miles of city, canyon and highway had passed swiftly beneath their undercarriages, one clear winner had emerged.
Continue reading 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan vs. 2012 Chrysler 300S [w/video]

2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan vs. 2012 Chrysler 300S [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Back in April, Hyundai launched the Assurance Trade-in Value Guarantee ensuring every new Hyundai's resale value two to four years down the road. Unfortunately for most folks still shopping for a Hyundai, that program has now ended. Keyword being "most" since Hyundai will no longer ensure the value of their mainline cars, but well-heeled buyers of the Genesis and Equus models can still sleep well knowing their high-end Hyundai will depreciate at a rate comparable to their neighbor's Toyota Avalon.

"It was a marketing program and we wanted to bring a spotlight on the strength of our residual values, and it did its job," John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai Motor America tells Automotive News.

Residual value consulting agency ALG says the data seems to back that up. Residual value of the Equus is third best in the premium-lux market behind the Lexus LS460 and the Jaguar XJ and the Genesis sedan is second only to the Nissan Maxima among full-sized cars.
Hyundai downscales vehicle buy-back promise originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 11:02:00 EST.
We've gotten word from our man on location driving the new 2012 Hyundai Azera that the Korean automaker's fully redesigned full-size front-wheel-drive sedan will start at $32,000, not including $875 in destination charges, when it goes on sale this spring. The only option available will be a $4,000 Tech package. We're not certain yet what all will be included in the Tech package since items like touch-screen navigation and a back-up camera will be standard equipment on the 2012 Azera, but we're looking into it.

Hyundai is asking an awful lot more for its new Azera compared to the one it replaces, which carried a base MSRP of just $25,495. We'll have our First Drive report on the 2012 Hyundai Azera ready soon to let you know if the price jump is justified.

We likewise have pricing information to report for the refreshed 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which will start at $24,250, again not including $875 in destination charges. That's for the four-cylinder 2.0t model with a manual transmission, while the upper bound on pricing is represented by the 3.8-liter V6-powered Track model with the new eight-speed automatic transmission that costs $34,250.

Lastly, while rumors had resurfaced again that Hyundai was considering creating a luxury sub-brand called Genesis that would sell both the sedan and coupe along with the larger Equus, Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik has told Autoblog, "There is no plan to create Genesis sub brand." He did, however, indicate that the next-generation Genesis sedan should have all-wheel drive as an option.
2012 Hyundai Azera priced from $32,000 and Gen Coupe from $24,250* originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 13:00:00 EST.
With less than 72 hours until the debut of the refreshed 2013 Genesis Coupe, Hyundai has posted a new teaser video that shows off the car's new styling in gory detail. Well, most of it anyway. Although sworn to secrecy, we've seen the new car up close, so we know exactly where to look to catch all the new cosmetics in the teaser. But trust us when we say that if you're thinking the Genesis Coupe is just getting new looks alone for the new model year, you'd be very, very wrong.
In just a few weeks, we'll be feasting our eyes on the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe under the bright lights of the Detroit Auto Show. And while the endless spy shots and leaked images have done a good job of showing us exactly what the new coupe looks like, this in-person video gives us a glimpse of what the new Hyundai sports cars looks like in the wild - inside and out.

We're slowly warming to the new Veloster-inspired front fascia, and the other visual changes for 2013 have been easier to appreciate. The revised taillamps look nice, and we dig the wheel design of the 3.8 R-Spec model shown in this video. V6-equipped Genesis Coupes will now be good for 345 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, routed to the ground via a six-speed manual or optional eight-speed automatic. Turbocharged four-cylinder models will still produce a more than respectable 271 hp and 275 lb-ft with the same transmission choices.

The videos, available after the jump, give us a glimpse inside the new Genesis Coupe, and though we can't see much more than the gauge cluster and steering wheel, it doesn't appear that too much has changed inside. More interesting is a brief second video clip with a first-person acceleration run, though in truth, it doesn't reveal much more than the engine sound because of the way it's shot.

We'll be sure to give you a closer look when the Hyundai makes its debut in Detroit next month, so stay tuned.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets the real-life walkaround treatment

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets the real-life walkaround treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 13:59:00 EST.
We already know that the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe will make its debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January, but now, details about what's behind that newly sculpted, Veloster-inspired front fascia have finally surfaced.

According to Car and Driver, the four- and six-cylinder engines found under the coupe's newly designed hood are coming in for significant upgrades. The 3.8-liter Lambda V6 now uses direct-injection technology (just like in the updated 2012 Genesis sedan), but instead of matching the four-door's 333 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque, Hyundai has further massaged this engine to the tune of 345 hp and 295 lb-ft of twist. That means the Korean coupe will put down more horsepower than many of its American and Japanese six-cylinder rivals, specifically the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Nissan 370Z.

There's good news for turbo-four enthusiasts, as well. Hyundai's 2.0-liter inline-four receives a new twin-scroll turbo unit and an upgraded intercooler, meaning there's now 271 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque on tap. Both the four- and six-cylinder engines are now available with eight-speed automatic transmissions, but those who prefer to row their own gears will almost certainly still be able to opt for a six-speed manual gearbox with either engine. Check out Car and Driver for more details and sit tight for the 2013 Genesis Coupe's official debut at January's Detroit Auto Show.
2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe to get 350-hp V6, 275-hp turbo four originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 Nov 2011 08:55:00 EST.
The Korean-language Hyundai blog has let slip a few more photos of the 2013 Genesis Coupe, giving us an even better idea of what the vehicle will look like once it receives a formal introduction at the Detroit Auto Show in January. From the looks of things, the performance coupe will fall in line with the Hyundai corporate design language, complete with a more complex front fascia that borrows heavily from the Veloster. The vehicle's stylized headlights are a sharp touch, however, and LED fog lights nestled low in the front fascia help give the vehicle a splash of class as well.

Speaking of reworked lighting, the tail lamps have been significantly redesigned, as well. The finished product appears significantly more aggressive than the current model. What other changes can we expect to see? Hyundai hasn't tipped its powertrain hand just yet, but we expect to see the current engine line to carry over, albeit with slight upgrades. There is some word that Hyundai may offer a supercharged version of the 3.8-liter V6, and we fully expect the revised six-cylinder powerplant from the Genesis sedan to be fitted under the coupe's hood. We'll know for sure come January.
Hyundai lets slip two official shots of 2013 Genesis Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 18:58:00 EST.
We've already seen some pretty decent spy shots of Hyundai's facelifted Genesis Coupe, expected to arrive shortly carrying a 2013-model-year designation. But this low-res image from TheCarBlogger.net appears to be our first official look at the car, sitting low and mean on a racetrack.

The outgoing Genesis Coupe's front end was never exactly a model of simplicity, but this new one has a lot more going on, with an aggressive hexagonal grille and fascia opening that cribs from its new kid brother, the 2012 Veloster. There are headlamps and LED detailing on what looks like a higher-spec model, and a rather bizarre vented hood with an almost whaletail-like pattern.

We can't see too much of the bodyside, but it appears Hyundai has given the car new split five-spoke wheels. The model's plunging rear quarter window appears unchanged.

No official word yet on what's under the hood, but we're expecting both four- and six-cylinder power, as before, but we have reason to believe that a supercharged V6 is in the cards. Thanks to SEMA and Rhys Millen Racing, we now know that Hyundai's stonking 5.0-liter Tau V8 fits in the engine bay, but we'd be surprised if an eight-cylinder coupe shows up when the model is revealed at this January's Detroit Motor Show.

UPDATE: Apparently the image above is likely a Photoshop, despite very much like the spy shots we've already been shown. Even so, it appears to give a realistic view of the 2013 model.
New 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe image leaks out [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Nov 2011 14:16:00 EST.
This isn't really shocking news - we've known that Hyundai has been working on a turbocharged version of its new Veloster for quite some time - but it's nice to have official confirmation directly from CEO John Krafcik on the company's Twitter account and via a live announcement at SEMA. The highly anticipated 2013 Veloster Turbo will debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January, reportedly alongside a refreshed Genesis Coupe.

The Veloster Turbo will - surprise, surprise - be powered by Hyundai's new 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine that was recently announced in Korea. That engine's previously announced spec is 204 horsepower - 66 more horsepower than the standard Veloster's naturally aspirated inline four. Assuming the model gets some other upgrades along with it, the turbocharged hatchback should be a pretty enthusiastic steer.

As for the updated Genesis Coupe, Car and Driver says that Krafcik has confirmed the base 2.0-liter turbo-four and naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 will get power increases (the V6 will likely get the same 333-hp treatment that the 2012 Genesis sedan received), and from the spy shots we've seen, we can expect the coupe's styling to be more akin to that of the smaller Veloster. We'll have the full details come January.
Hyundai confirms Veloster Turbo, upgraded Genesis Coupe headed for Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 09:57:00 EST.
"The best Chrysler sedan we've seen in decades," says Consumer Reports, in reference to the 2011 Chrysler 300. At the risk of damning a very fine car with faint praise, that may not be all that much of an accomplishment. And we'd have to add that the last all-new Chrysler 300, which hit the market in model-year 2005, was also the best Chrysler sedan the world had seen in decades.

That said, we agree - the redesigned 2011 Chrysler 300 is indeed a giant leap forward for the brand.

The previous-generation Chrysler 300 only managed to eke out a rather miserable score of 64 points, which placed it near the bottom of its class of upscale sedans. The redesigned 2011 model, though, earns an "Excellent" overall test score of 80. Also receiving Excellent scores are the 2012 Hyundai Genesis (which led the field with 92 points, according to CR) , along with the refreshed Acura TL and Toyota Avalon, all of which fall into the same upscale sedan classification.

In other news from CR, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid sedan did not fare well when tested against its non-hybridized siblings. With an overall score of 69, the Sonata Hybrid earned a full 20 points less than the highly rated gas-only Sonata GLS. CR cited poor handling and an unrefined drivetrain as reasons for the low score, saying that "the trade-offs in driveability, refinement, and braking performance are too high" versus the Sonata GLS.

Also tested by CR was the all-electric Nissan Leaf, which was blessed with an overall score of 78. The electron-fueled hatchback was praised for its low running costs of just 3.5 cents per mile, but it was held back by a highly variable driving range that plummeted to just 60 miles in the winter with the heat on. Driven gently in mild weather, CR managed up to 90 miles of range from the Leaf.
