General Motors and its lawyers say the company isn't responsible for design flaws or defects caused by "Old GM," which refers to the pre-bankruptcy company General Motors Corp. (now known as Motors Liquidation Co.).

The company has asked that a lawsuit brought by a Pennsylvania woman over faulty tie rods on the 2007-2008 Chevrolet Impala be dismissed on grounds that "New GM" is not responsible for the old company's gaffes.

The General's lawyers say the company is responsible for claims against warranties set up under the old company, but never agreed to take responsibility for defects. Slick move, boys.
GM claims not responsible for Impala problems from before bankruptcy originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 09:29:00 EST.
28 workers at the Lordstown, Ohio Chevrolet plant are suing General Motors and the UAW after they claim they were wrongfully classified as temporary employees. According to the workers' complaint, they were paid 40 percent less than their permanent counterparts. The suit also accuses UAW Local 1112 of ignoring their complaints and refusing to go to bat for them.

The workers were hired in 2006, layed off in 2007, and brought back on six months later. When they were rehired, they say they were briefly payed the correct amount, but were wrongfully reclassified as temporary in June of 2008.

For their trouble, the workers are looking for between $3-4 million in back pay, at the rate they say should have been theirs all along. General Motors is keeping its lips buttoned on the suit, but UAW Local 1112 says it is not at fault.
GM workers suing company, union over pay originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 May 2011 10:28:00 EST.
Chrysler's engineers have been busy lately. Mark Allen, head of the Jeep design studio, has introduced a total of eight new concept vehicles at this year's Easter Jeep Safari. Each one has been worked up by the company's off-road engineering team, and while most are nothing more than pure fantasy, at least a few can be crafted out of parts available from the Mopar go-fast catalog. Even better, all have the off road guts to go anywhere you please.

That includes the Jeep Wrangler J7. Consider this the stripped-down beast we would build if Chrysler gave us the keys to the kingdom for a week. Fluffy stuff like carpet, the stereo and alloy wheels have been ditched in favor of more utilitarian goods. New all-steel bumpers, complete with helicopter hooks, join a sturdy rear gate and steel wheels wrapped in 35-inch rubber. A small 2-inch lift helps accommodate the larger rollers, and the eye-searing Mustard Plug paint sets the truck apart from the crowd. While we have no problem with the 3.8-liter V6, we would probably swap the four-speed automatic gear box for a row-your-own.

Speaking of rowing your own, the Jeep Patriot Extreme is more than happy to accommodate third-pedal lovers everywhere. While Wrangler guys may be quick to rag on the baby Jeep, this Patriot is more than capable of dispatching rough terrain. A two-inch suspension lift gives the trail-rated package just a little more clearance, and custom rock rails protect the bodywork from getting too close to the trail. We're also digging those 16-inch TJ Moab wheels, extra lighting on the bumper and roof rack for... snowboards?

Chrysler says it turned out the Wrangler Trail Boss (right) just to show off all of the products available from the Jeep trail catalog. The truck's specs read like a recipe for a Wrangler wish list. Outside, the most noticeable difference between the Trail Boss and a standard Wrangler is the addition of new AEV off-road bumpers, complete with a Warn 9.5ti winch, though the half-doors and sun bonnet do much to alter the truck's attitude, too. A 3-inch lift kit allows for healthy 35-inch rubber down below, wrapped around those slick Hutchinson Rock Monster beadlock wheels. Click the jump to read about the rest of the Mopar monsters.
That's the problem facing GM, according to UAW President Ron Gettelfinger. The General has already harvested the low hanging fruit with previous buyouts, but they're embarking on another round to try and further reduce labor costs. We've already covered the specifics of GM's latest buyout offer that attempts to sweeten the enticement to leave so that cheaper labor can be brought in. The new offer was made to 74,000 employees, and Gettelfinger estimates that about 15,000 will accept the offer. Uncertainty over what the US economy is likely to do in coming months is playing a role in the decision for the roughly 46,000 GM employees eligible for retirement. Money is no longer pouring out of the housing market, and people who thought they'd cash out for a retirement in tropical climes are rethinking their plans while we all wait on tenterhooks to see what our brush with recession will look like.

In 2006, GM was able to entice 34,000 workers to leave, but since then the world economy has been stricken by a raft of bad loans made by brokers without scruples, so sitting tight and waiting out the storm might look like a smarter option. Sitting tight for just a little longer might look wise considering the accolades for GMs cars as of late. It really appears like the turnaround has gained some traction. Then again, if you're staring down retirement, putting a fat lump of cash in a tax free 401k might look awfully attractive, too.

[Source: Detroit News]

UAW pres expects 15,000 workers to take GM buyout originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 19:33:00 EST. Normally, California is the state that launches all sorts of initiatives that drive carmakers into a frenzy. Now, The Golden State is the one asserting that the national government might need to drop a few billion large to save The Big Three -- with a few left-handed compliments to go with it, of course.

Jerry Brown, the California Attorney General, said "The American auto industry is in deep trouble and they may require subsidies. They may have to be bailed out by the federal government that has just enabled their inefficiency and their gas guzzling." It's an intriguing position, because essentially, what he's saying is that the government that has allowed American car companies to be profligate with natural resources must now bail them out because it has allowed them to be profligate with natural resources. Twelve states are suing the US government over federal fuel efficiency standards, but Brown is then asking the government to bail them out if there are drastic penalties to pay or changes necessary for those automakers to enact. Brown said "The auto companies are in such a mess, because they persistently refuse to build fuel-efficient cars, that they might find it financially impossible to do the right thing. If that proves to be the case, I think Congress has to look at ways of helping them."

The case won't be decided for some time, but the NHTSA says that is out to balance "economic practicability and technological feasibility," and that it is more concerned with energy conservation than environmental protection. At heart, while it looks like Attorney General Brown wants to do the right thing -- who's the piper, and who's really responsible to pay?

From the house of Winston Smith's Cool Guy Stuff comes this postal-issue jeep, fresh off the kind of arcane pimping that we come to expect from eBay. A Hot Indian Red 1983 AM General Jeep that was once a lowly carrier of New Jersey mail. A poker fan bought it, and his shop turned it into what you see here. It was pimped on a budget, so there are some minor issues with it, but it did get a 120-watt CD player, a couple of speakers, and a removable 10-inch DVD player that you can watch as you play Hold 'Em in the built in poker table. That's right, a built in poker table. And if that weren't enough, it has -- you guessed it -- electric floor mats with lighting neon flames. The Jeep comes complete with poker chips, cards, and case for the winner, and you can even get the original mail tray. The seller makes sure to state right away that it can still run a mail route. However, the Jeep does not come with the model in the pink thong, pink high heels, and sweatpants that declares "I'm Pink" across the back. Welcome to Jersey. Game on.
