After the flooding and power outages, one of the biggest impacts Superstorm Sandy has had in the Northeast remains a rash of gasoline shortages. To get around the problem, Fei Teng, a 42-year-old sushi chef at a Manhattan restaurant called 1066 ENO, was reportedly hoarding gas in the restaurant's basement using soy sauce buckets. How do we know this? According to the New York Daily News, another restaurant employee accidently spilled most of the fuel onto the floor, which subsequently somehow ignited.

Three employees were injured during the resultant blaze, with a chef receiving first- and second-degree burns to his body and face, while a busboy and waitress received more serious second- and third-degree burns on their legs. The report is from Saturday, which indicated that the employees were still in the hospital and that the restaurant was still closed. There was no word as to whether Teng will face any charges, but this bizarre disaster is further proof that you should only use properly labeled gas cans for storage - and keep them in well-ventilated areas.
NYC chef busted for hoarding gas after restaurant fire injures 3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 14:29:00 EST.
If you're old enough to remember the gas shortages of the 1970s, then you probably remember the long lines to get fuel. If you aren't old enough and you'd like to experience those lines for yourself, head to New England. A massive October snowfall has left many without power, including gas stations. That means that those gas stations that still have power are getting swamped, and tanker trucks aren't getting through because of the weather. Add it all up, and you have the makings of a small crisis.

WTNH talked to Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, who surveyed the devastation via helicopter. Malloy is asking residents not to top off their tanks, adding that if you have three-quarters of a tank "we're going to get through this." The mayor insists that there is enough gas to go around and that deliveries are being made.

Hit the jump to watch video of the WTNH report. There is also post-jump video from the JB Allen Report that shows that at least some gas stations have, in fact, run out of gas over the last couple of days. Has the situation improved? Similar problems caused supply problems on the U.S. East Coast last week.

Becauseethanol-based reformulated gasoline is easily contaminated by water, the gasoline and ethanol must be sent separatelyto distribution terminals (like the facility shown at right) and mixed at the terminal before being trucked togas stations. MTBE-based gasoline was sent to the terminal via pipeline, ready for distribution. Getting the ethanol tothe terminals has proven to be more of a challenge than expected.

[Source: CNN/Money]
Gas stations in Texas run dry originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 29 Apr 2006 15:19:00 EST.
