If you're one of those souls who prize vintage arcade cabinets, you may want to look away. A group has torn into a pair of classic Sega Rally games to create something a little more creative. Using the old steering wheel and pedal inputs, the team created a virtual racing game that controls real radio-control cars. The cool part is that the driver can choose from either an on-car camera or a top-down view as a shout out to the racing games of old.

According to our friends at Engadget, the project only ran into one real challenge, which was getting the feed to pump through the old CRT monitors in the cabinets. In the end, the guys had to scrap using the old tubes in favor of a more modern screen.

Sure, it breaks our hearts a little to see Sega Rally get cut on, but we'd be lying if we said we didn't want to spend an hour or two behind the wheel of this duo. You can check out the creation in the video below.
Continue reading Sega arcade game cabinets turned into R/C car controllers

Sega arcade game cabinets turned into R/C car controllers originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 03 Dec 2012 10:00:00 EST.
If idle hands are the devil's playground, idle engineers are a field day of awesome. Gareth Jones is a mechanical engineer with a penchant for slot cars, and when his child grew to an age to appreciate scale cars whirring around a plastic track, he did what any responsible father would do: he went out and bought a new Scalextric set. While Jones found the new cars to be much more detailed and accurate than the models he had known from the '70s, he was frustrated to find models like a '69 Dodge Charger handled just as well as an F1 car. At some point, he decided to right that wrong on his lunch breaks.

Using some rapid prototyping equipment and a few CAD drawings, Jones whipped up a chassis that would allow the bodies to actually lean in a corner. Still unsatisfied, the engineer designed a unique steering system that allows the wheels to look like they actually turn in a corner. Throw in some clever interiors and a custom-designed 1972 Cadillac limo, and you've got all the elements of a great scale electric chase from the '70s. Check out the videos below for a closer look. The A-Team, Starsky and Hutch and the Blues Brothers all make an appearance.
Continue reading Engineer builds lifelike slot cars with steering and suspension [w/video]

Engineer builds lifelike slot cars with steering and suspension [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 12:30:00 EST.
It would seem Turn 10 has outdone the Need For Speed franchise on it's own turf with Forza: Horizon with one glaring exception. No matter where you turn or what sort of mayhem you unleash on the countryside, there is no law enforcement. Fortunately, EA Games is ready to serve up the newest foray into the Need For Speed universe with NFS: Most Wanted. As you might suspect, the gameplay focuses on illegal street racing and the law's attempts at maintaining order. EA Games has turned out the first ad for the title, and if the game play is as entertaining as the clip below, we'll want a turn at the controller.

The add pits an array of would-be lawbreakers against the boys in blue in a little real-life showdown, but it takes one hooligan in a Ford Focus ST to get the party started. Check out the clip below to see what we mean.
Continue reading Need for Speed: Most Wanted commercial pits cops versus cars

Need for Speed: Most Wanted commercial pits cops versus cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 16:57:00 EST.
If you were fortunate enough to visit last year's Detroit Auto Show, you may recall something special lurking in the Ford booth. The automaker featured an expansive slot car track with a variety of Ford Mustang racers darting around an immensely detailed course. As it turns out, the track was built by David Beattie, a slot car enthusiast who has turned his passion into a serious business. Beattie uses a CNC router to carve the topography of your favorite track before applying numerous handmade details. The track surface itself is airbrushed to mimic well-worn tarmac, and Beattie makes every tree and fence by hand.

The craftsman can create any track from Le Mans to Laguna Seca. You'll need deep pockets to put one of these slot car venues in your man cave, however. Prices begin at $15,000 and ratchet all the way up to $75,000. Of course, that may be a small price to pay if you absolutely have to own a Porsche 917 shell that opens up to reveal an intricate figure-eight. Hit the jump to check out a few videos of Beattie's handiwork, including an interview with Jay Leno.
Continue reading The ultimate in slot car tracks comes at a price [w/video]

The ultimate in slot car tracks comes at a price [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 15:31:00 EST.
We can see it now. A police officer pulls over a Pep Boys-customized Chevy Cavalier that's been having a hard time staying in its lane. The officer asks the driver if he's been texting. "No," he says, "Just playing Angry Birds on my rearview mirror."

While the automotive aftermarket has never shied away from facilitating driver distraction, this new rearview mirror kit from online retailer Chinavasion pretty much takes the prize. It contains a 4.3-inch touchscreen, GPS, Bluetooth, an SD card slot, a wireless rearview camera, an internal camera, and a DVR for recording video from either camera. Oh, and frighteningly enough, it also features some pre-installed games. (Although we don't know for sure, we doubt Angry Birds is actually included.)

The Chinavasion mirror just slips over your car's existing rear-view mirror, meaning installation hassles should be minimal, so pretty much anyone with $199.86 can order one and be on their way towards causing an accident in no time.
Bluetooth-equipped mirror adds GPS and, yes, games originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 03 Dec 2011 16:03:00 EST.
A handful of Gran Turismo 5 players are currently battling it out for a shot at becoming a real-world race car driver in Polyphony's GT Academy, but according to GT Planet, there may be a bit of an issue. Currently, the top three drivers are using a less-than-sanctioned route to get around the track by dipping off of the asphalt and cutting two corners entirely to come up with a significantly quicker lap time than everyone else.

To put it simply, the three players who are on the podium right now are cheating.

Now, cheating is a staple of both video gamedom and the hallowed halls of racing, so it should come as no surprise that someone has figured out a way to get around a track quicker than everyone else by <strike>bending</strike> obliterating the rules. Still, it kind of ruffles our feathers to know that the top award could go to the shadiest man (or woman) standing.

So far, there's no word on whether or not Polyphony will step in to quell the competitor's cheating ways. Hit the jump to have a look at the videos for yourself.

When we hear the phrase "contemporary artist" we usually say, "Just show us what you're doing because there's little chance we'll understand rationale." Garnet Hertz, the artist in question, is combining a Sega Outrun arcade console with an EVT America Electric Trike (a three-wheeled scooter), an iPhone, and custom GPS software. The result will be a drivable arcade game -- like on the road at up to 20 mph -- that overlays Outrun graphics on live GPS maps.

The GPS software finds the vanishing point of the road and then, in the manner of Google Maps' hybrid setting, puts the Outrun Testarossa and road into the live-action setting. The iPhone's internals keep track of progress and keep the screen moving in 'real-time.'

If you really want to know the rationales, they are the "Un-Simulation of Driving," and "GPS Navigation Parallax & Mixed Reality." Make of those what you will, just know they involve "obfuscation." Sadly, deception and inveigling weren't mentioned. You can check out the video after the jump, which is mostly a guy holding a laptop walking away from the camera.
The folks who have crafted Gran Turismo for Sony's PSP have put together an opening movie sequence, and as you might imagine, it is chock full of supercars. And we mean bursting-at-its-pixelated-seams with just about every hot car you could ever want to drive on the road, the dirt, and the track.

The rendered moments are drop dead (especially for a handheld), but even the gameplay intercuts look pretty sweet. Click through to the jump and check it out - it will give you something to until GT5 comes out. Thanks for the tip, Will!

[Source: GranTurismo.com]
VIDEO: Gran Turismo PSP opening movie - Here come the supercars originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 13:00:00 EST.
If you've been trying to raise your high score on that iPhone or iPod Touch racing game but you just can't get your chi going without a steering wheel, this baby could be for you. Made by CTA Digital, you clip the phone into a holder, clip the holder into the wheel, and channel your Herr Schumacher.

Splurge for the top-of-the-line model and the wheel is attached to a suction cup by an adjustable arm, and you can go past Schumi straight to Kwai Chang Caine -- that's straight up Kung Fu badness. We won't mention how it might make you look, but you're not worried about that, are you? In case you're wondering, though, you can get a glimpse in the video after the jump. Hat tip to James

An entirely galaxy could have been birthed in the time it's taking for Gran Turismo 5 to arrive, but at least Sony is trying to make it worth everyone's while when the portable driving sim shows up October 1. If you pre-order Gran Turismo PSP, you'll be able to add one of five cars in select colors, the most special among them being a 1974 Lamborghini Countach LP400 in luscious Arancio (that's orange).

This is the first time Lamborghini has made it to the pixelated world of GT, and the marketing manager promised it won't be the last. The other vehicles available include a Bugatti Veyron in Black M, an Enzo in Giallo (yellow), the GTbyCitroen in a deeper hue of butter, and a GT-R Spec V in metallic blue.

You can still get the cars later even if you don't pre-order, just not in those colors, but in the meantime check them out in the high-res gallery below. Thanks for the tip, Seminole

Vodafone has created an online game called Taxi Grand Prix that looks pretty neat. You choose a team of two actual taxi drivers on the roads in Great Britain, and when a race begins, the distance your two drivers travel whenever they have fares is added to your team's distance. Whichever team's drivers clock up 308 kilometers fastest wins.

To promote the game, the cell phone company has created a series of vids featuring McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen as boy racer black cabbies. In this intro spot, the two fight to get to a single fare in Spring Hill. Based on the amount of driving they do, it looks like the pickup is in Orkney. And while the spot is a bit of fun -- and the only time Heikki has been in front of Lewis all year -- the game itself looks a lot cooler than the commercial. Follow the jump to watch the video.

[Source: The Sun]
Continue reading Lewis Hamilton, Heikki Kovalainen moonlighting as cab drivers

Lewis Hamilton, Heikki Kovalainen moonlighting as cab drivers originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 18:58:00 EST.
The holidays come for auto freaks several times a year, and we call those times auto shows. But with the motor show calendar on break for the summer, we got an unexpected injection of octane from this year's E3 video game expo. As if it weren't enough to catch a glimpse at such promising upcoming releases as Forza Motorosport 3, Gran Turismo 5 and Codemasters' FUEL, we've now got another one to add to our shopping lists: Need for Speed SHIFT.

Although previous installments of the NFS franchise focused on outrunning the po-po and tricking out imports, as our thumb-cramped compatriots over at Joystiq found out just this past March, SHIFT promises to deliver a pure racing simulator. EA has now released the full list of cars (including such highlights as the Lexus LF-A, Pagani Zonda R, Nissan GT-R SpecV, BMW M3 GT2 and Audi R8 LMS) and tracks (including the Nürburgring, Laguna Seca and Willow Springs) that'll be included in the game, along with a pair of videos that we've posted after the jump. After all, the Quattro company has created a website to promote its car on the Nürburgring in real life and in the game, and it interviewed GT5 mastermind Kazunori Yamauchi about what fans can expect. Yamauchi-san revealed that the game is going to offer not only more vehicles, more online features, and increased detail, but it will also include night racing, damage rendering (previously confirmed), and weather changes.

If you watch the Audi R8 Meets Gran Turismo 5 video, one of the game developers even talks of one day providing weather reports for an entire 24-hour race, and you can read the interview with Yamauchi-san by clicking on a PDF link here. The graphical and gameplay additions are surely welcome and long overdue, and could return GT5 to the head of the racing sim pack - whenever it finally gets here...

View Poll

[Source: GT Planet]
REPORT: GT5 to get weather changes, night racing - and yes, damage rendering [w/POLL] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 May 2009 11:29:00 EST.
Electronic Arts, the folks who recently brought us Need for Speed: Undercover, are now working on three (possibly four) new titles in the franchise. According to EA, they're just trying to "keep the game fresh and the players entertained." If you're a cynic, you're getting another plate of something that hasn't tasted good since Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

Your three options will be NFS: Shift, NFS: Nitro, and NFS: World Online. Shift is "built for racers by racers" and will "deliver a true driver's experience that reflects contemporary motorsports." Nitro is an arcade take on the game with "a fresh and unique visual style." World Online is a free web-based player that "takes the race into the largest open world in the history of Need for Speed."

And if you believe the skinny from Eurogamer, EA is working on a fourth NFS that will continue the work of "crafting different games for different audiences and their unique tastes in the driving category." As for the ones we know about, Speed and Nitro will hit shelves this fall, with World Online following in winter. For now, you can can read the press release after the jump, and check out the high-res screenshots below.

Gallery: Need for Speed Shift, Nitro, and World Online

[Source: Joystiq]
Continue reading Need for Speed franchise splitting into trio

Need for Speed franchise splitting into trio originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Feb 2009 19:01:00 EST. The name of the game: arcade. Or better names might be 'free-for-all' and 'pedestrians, watch out!' It's cut like an MTV video, so it's hard to get a feel for the flow of the action, but all you need to know is that there'll be plenty of it -- action, that is. And if nothing else, it does seem to accurately depict how actual R8 drivers tend to pilot their cars... Follow the jump for the video.

[Source: Rockstar]
Continue reading VIDEO: Audi R8 puts angels in danger in Midnight Club: LA

VIDEO: Audi R8 puts angels in danger in Midnight Club: LA originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Aug 2008 19:29:00 EST. The new film, which opens in French theaters next month, is slated to feature cameos by a number of sports figures, including Ferrari stars Michael Schumacher and Jean Todt.

Set in the ancient Roman era, Asterix is a classic series of French children's comic books which has been translated into dozens of languages around the world. The film which, like Speed Racer, is shot with live actors (rather than animated like the original), is called Asterix aux jeux olympiques ("Asterix at the Olympic Games"). Schumacher appears in a seven-minute segment in the movie as a chariot racer called - you guessed it - Schumix, while Todt gives orders from the pit wall...dressed in red, of course. (Hopefully the German authorities won't give Michael a hard time about driving the chariot this time.)

In addition to the Ferrari champions, several other European sports celebrities make cameos in the movie as well, including French tennis player Amelie Mauresmo, retired French soccer player Zinedine Zidane (of World Cup head-butting infamy) and British footballer David Beckham. This is, of course, the second such cameo Schumacher has made, after his appearance in Disney/Pixar's Cars.

Users can maneuver any of six different VW models through different explosions, while altering vehicle speeds, props, sound effects and camera angles to make that perfect scene.

Product placement in the movie has several VW vehicles making an appearance, including the Touareg 2 SUV and Golf GTI, a smart move seeing that The Bourne Ultimatum has grossed more than $70 million in its first weekend.
It's fantastic when the Microsoft juggernaut uses its massive expertise to get things spot on. Forza Motorsport 2, the sequel to original's four-wheeled bedlam, has better physics, better visuals, and according to the recently posted list, 310 cars to choose from.

There's the mundane, like a 2006 Acura RL. There's the surprising, like a Bentley Continental GT. There's the juiced, like the the Saleen S7. There are the shoo-ins, like the Mclaren F1 and the NSX. And then there's the overkill: 18 Chevys, 20 Ferraris, 22 Nissans, 25 Porsches, and 25 Toyotas. That's the kind of "overkill" that's just right in our book. Seven of those cars can only be had with game pre-orders and the collector's edition. Other rare "unicorn cars" can be bought in the Turn 10 online auction, in case you can't get your lap times just right with the 310 standard options.

What's more, you get more tuning choices like swapping drivetrains (changing FWD into RWD), and more artwork possibilities (4000 art layers instead of 400). You can even create custom paint jobs and sell them online. Forza Motorsport 2 arrives in May. Get ready to drive.

When you are called to some difficult duty by family or love or ambition, you take the bitter pill and do what needs to be done. When the red Nismo 350Z above called to Jesse Edgar, he knew what he had to do: unload the immense video game, console, and accessory collection covering every surface of his room. Not to buy the car, just to get a "nice" down payment.

You know when the vice squad makes a huge bust and they load a table up with the haul? Imagine if video games and consoles were illegal, and the cops busted a guy in a bunker who had been hoarding contraband for 30 years. When his loot was laid out for photographs, it would look like the pictures on Jesse's eBay page. From a 1976 Fairchild to a Sony PS2 and an insane number of games -- and a lunchbox and Monopoly game -- it's all there. You'll also get quite the education in consoles if you read the entire thing. We don't know what the street value is, but the bidding starts at $2,000. This is what "turn and burn" is all about. Good luck, Jesse.
