Lamborghini Gallardo recalled for possible power steering fluid leak

Up to 1,491 examples of the 2004-2006 Lamborghini Gallardo coupe and Spyder are being recalled due to potential power steering system leaks. Fluid can escape from high-pressure pipes located near the hydraulic pump, and if the fluid comes into contact with an ignition source a fire could result.

Lamborghini is notifying the affected owners, who can take their Gallardos to their dealers for repairs free of charge. For more information, read the bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below.

Guy Fieri's stolen Lamborghini found in teen's storage container

Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction. A Lamborghini stolen from celebrity chef Guy Fieri has been found a year after it first went missing. In case you need refreshing, the Lambo was pilfered by a thief who literally rappelled off the roof of a building in order to get access to the Italian Stallion.

It seems the perpetrator had a thing for stealthy operations - the vehicle turned up during an investigation that began after a motorcyclist wearing all black fired a gun into a parked car. The gunman was a 17-year-old boy, and Fieri's car was located in a storage container in Point Richmond, California, along with the boy's motorcycle and apparent evidence linking him to the shooting.

Fieri, for his part, is happy to have his Lamborghini back:

"I would like to thank the Marin County Sheriff's Office and the Mill Valley Police Department for their hard work and effort in the recovery of my car. I'm glad we can put this behind us, and feel better knowing that justice is being served."

If absence truly does make the heart grow fonder, we'd be happy to have our Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder back in one piece, too, especially considering it's been over a year since its disappearance.

By now you've probably heard about "Batman" getting pulled over by the cops in his Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. The story has been all over the Internet this week, thanks to the in-car video from the local Maryland police department that stopped the caped crusader. But now we've got the real scoop on this would-be Bruce Wayne, thanks to the Washington Post.

His name is Lenny B. Robinson, and being Batman is only a part-time gig for the wealthy philanthropist. Robinson visits sick children in hospitals around the Baltimore area, decked out in a $5,000 neoprene-and-leather Batman suit, according to the report. He hands out Batman toys, signs autographs and gives the kids some much-needed fun, while boosting the morale of the parents, as well.

The Lamborghini is just part of the fun, though Robinson told the Post that he's having a "real" Batmobile built. (Which of the various movie cars he's having replicated was not specified.) While this episode marked Robinson's first time in a national spotlight, it wasn't his first encounter with the police while in costume. Patch reported on a distress call made by "Batman" back in November 2011, when Robinson's Gallardo had a flat.

Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder Performante will crash the party in LA

Even though the Murcielago ended production earlier this month and its successor won't begin production for a while, Lamborghini has not been spending its time idly, and will prove that by introducing the Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante. Billed as "less weight, more fascination," the Spyder Performante is meant to take the 'regular' Gallardo Spyder to new highs of performance with new lows of weight.

Essentially a superleggera version of the Gallardo Spyder, a total of 143 pounds have been shed from the standard convertible through the use of carbon fiber and carbon composite parts both outside and in. The convertible cover is made from carbon fiber, as is the rear spoiler, diffuser and some underbody components. Inside, the transmission tunnel cover, door panels and seat shells are CF units.

The front end has also been tweaked for looks and aerodynamic purposes, with improved cooling and more downforce on the front axle being two of the results, and better rear aero comes courtesy of a redesigned diffuser. The blast-off time from 0-to-62 mph has been dropped to 3.9 seconds, and terminal velocity comes in at 201 mph. Want more? It puts out less CO2 emissions, which means better gas mileage. So there. Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder takes 2010 Targa Trophy

If you've got your ear to the ground, you've probably heard a thing or two about the Targa Trophy. Think of it as a more responsible, but no less entertaining version of the Gumball. Instead of encouraging drivers to be the first across the line, the Targa trophy works just like any other TSD (time, speed, distance) road rally: teams are given the location of a checkpoint and are expected to navigate there within a predetermined amount of time. Those closest to the time without being over (or under) are awarded the most points.

This year's running of the SoCal event has wrapped up with 73 drivers tackling a varied course that wound through the Californian countryside. Radoslav Kalla and his Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder took the overall win with 1,048 points. His closest competitor, Thomas Dillman, piloted an Audi S4 to finish with 966 points.

The Targa Trophy will now head to San Francisco. The green flag drops on August 27, and the checkers will fall the following day in Silicon Valley. While Lamoborghini's press conference at the LA Auto Show today doesn't begin until later this afternoon, we can at least show you what the Italians will have on display. Meet the Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder, a natural evolution of the closed-top, mid-engine car with a soft-top mechanism to keep the rain and sun from sullying the Italian-crafted interior. We don't have much information on the 560-4 Spyder yet, except that the new soft-top will open and close in 20 seconds, we love those new wheels and the car's mechanicals will be identical to the standard car. That means the 5.2L V10 still produces 560 hp and this thing will go like a bat, or a bull perhaps, out of hell.

Remember Lamborghini's pledge to attend each major auto show with a new product? Pretty ambitious, but by and large the exotic Italian carmaker has lived up to its promise. In unveiling the LP560-4, the revised version of the Gallardo, Lamborghini opened up a whole new range of possibilities, and we're expecting new Spyder and possibly Superleggera models to follow at coming shows.

The former is likely to be the first to make its debut. While modifying a vehicle - especially one with such dynamic excellence as the Gallardo - to drop its top is a time-consuming affair, remember that the outgoing Gallardo on which the LP560-4 is based had its own Spyder version, so we wouldn't expect too long a development period. Still, the Paris show in October could be a bit soon, so we might have to wait a while longer to see the new Spyder. In the meantime, we've got a very...different video of the new Gallardo LP560-4 after the jump, just because we like you that much.

Today, Hamann sent out word of its latest creation: a tuned version of the highly desirable Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Hamann's visual upgrades enhance the musclebound "baby" Lambo's form by giving it a racier look while reportedly providing real aerodynamic benefits. The new front spoiler and side skirts are complemented in back by either a new 3-piece rear spoiler or a race-inspired rear wing.

Performance-wise, Hamann offers two different exhaust upgrades, and can also reprogram the car's ECU to kick peak output up to 520 horsepower. Slowing down a car with that much juice takes a little extra effort, so bigger brakes with 8-piston calipers up front and 6-pots in back can be fitted to make exiting lightspeed a little easier. Naturally, the wheels can be upgraded, too. We favor the turbofan look in the picture above, but the black rims pictured after the jump look just fine as well.

Finally, the most important upgrade Hamann bestows upon the Gallardo is, ironically, the conversion to "Lambo" doors. In a week-long process, the stock doors are modified to open butterfly-style. In the case of the Gallardo, it's actually fitting.

Lamborghini having bullish year

Volkswagen subsidiary Automobili Lamborghini is carving out a bigger niche in the exotic car market now that it's under the wing of VW's Audi brand. The automaker has seen sales in the first half of 2006 jump 45 percent, from 655 to 952 units, on strong sales of its new Gallardo Spyder, expansion of its dealer network, and a growing international market for exotic automobiles. Sales in the key U.S. market are up 68 percent so far this year.

CEO Stephan Winkelmann confidently predicted that 2006 will set a new sales record for the company, with both the Gallardo Spyder and the Murcielago LP640 models sporting 12 month backlogs.

The company has expanded into new markets in Asia and Eastern Europe, as it increased its worldwide dealer network 35 percent in the first six months of 2006. Winkelmann is shooting for 100 dealers by year-end.
