<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/general+motors/">General Motors</a> is recalling around 38,000 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/pontiac/g8/">Pontiac G8</a> sedans from its 2008 and 2009 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the cars may have a passenger-side airbag flaw that might prevent proper deployment in certain scenarios.<br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nhtsa/">NHTSA</a>, the airbag might not adequately protect a fifth percentile woman - that is, a woman around four-foot, 11-inches weighing 108 pounds. <em>The New York Times </em>indicates that the anomaly was found during a crash test conducted by GM's Australian branch, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/holden/">Holden</a>, which was testing the G8's twin (read: Commodore) for head injuries. According to that report, the test in question is specifically tailored to simulate injuries to females, so the results do not apply to men or children.<br />
<br />
The issue has been blamed on a seat position sensor that governs airbag deployment rates. NHTSA indicates that when the front passenger seat is moved all the way forward, the faulty sensor may inappropriately trigger a 30-millisecond delay between airbag stages, potentially leading to greater injuries.<br />
<br />
With the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/pontiac/">Pontiac</a> division closed, other GM dealers will reprogram the sensor module of models covered under the recall at no cost to vehicle owners. GM says that no injuries have been reported as a result of this issue. <div style="text-align: center;"><strong><em><small>Chevrolet Lumina SS (Middle East edition) - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></em></strong></div>
<br /> If it's Monday, there must be a big, rear-wheel drive Chevrolet four-door coming soon. Tuesday? We'll retract and deny everything. We know, we know. We also know we just reported that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/16/report-lutz-says-next-chevy-impala-to-stay-front-drive-gain-hy/">the next Chevy Impala will remain front-wheel drive</a> - but check this out. We've been hearing rumors for some time now, that despite whatever <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/16/one-last-time-henderson-slams-door-on-pontiac-g8-revival/">Fritz Henderson has to say on the matter</a>, a high-performance version of General Motors' Zeta platform that underpins the Pontiac G8 will live on as a Chevy SS model, either badged as a Caprice or (more likely) an Impala. And we're not talking the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-chevrolet-caprice-police-car">police special</a>. As Maximum Bob has said, the G8 is "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/14/gm-beginning-to-backpedal-on-lutz-g8-turning-caprice-comments/">Kinda too good to waste.</a>" Needless to say, we totally agree. <br /> <br /> An eagle-eye'd AB reader named Jim just caught the following on a <a href="http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?p=394000">Pontiac G8 forum</a>:<br /> <blockquote>
<div><em>"My dealer had sent off pictures to GM of the cable portion of the front seats belts rubbing against the plastic on the side of the front seats. In an email sent back to the dealer, GM says that they have no plans to solve what has already been built but going forward a correction is planned. The email continues: ...a fix is planned for MY11.5 Chevy Police Program and MY12 Chevy SS. The fix will involve a protective sleeve that covers the buckle and section of the buckle stem that rubs on the plastic trim."</em></div>
</blockquote> <br /> How 'bout them apples? That might normally be a sliver of a sliver of a rumor, but it exactly what what we've heard independently from a reliable source - and it brings a great big smile to our face. Now, repeat after us, LS3 with six-speed manual, LS3 with six-speed manual, LS3 with six-speed manual... <em>Thanks a million, Jim!</em><br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevy-lumina-ss-middle-east">2009 Chevy Lumina SS (Middle East)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevy-lumina-ss-middle-east/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/12/2008chevyluminass02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevy-lumina-ss-middle-east/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/12/2008chevyluminass01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevy-lumina-ss-middle-east/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/12/2008chevyluminass03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevy-lumina-ss-middle-east/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/12/2008chevyluminass04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevy-lumina-ss-middle-east/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/12/2008chevyluminass05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: <a href="http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?p=394000">G8 Board</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/16/rumormill-holden-based-rwd-2012-chevy-ss-coming-after-all/">Rumormill: Holden-based, RWD 2012 Chevy SS coming after all?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 15:32:00 EST. <br />When General Motors' Bob Lutz talks, we listen. The reason, of course, is that he always gives us something good to write. Over the weekend, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/11/lutz-pontiac-g8-to-continue-as-chevy-caprice-in-u-s-z28-likel/">we told you</a> about an interview Lutz had with <em>Automobile Magazine</em> where the Maximum One said that the G8 will live on as a Chevrolet Caprice. Lutz's comments looked like a sure thing to us, as it's hard to misinterpret these words.<br /><blockquote><em>"The last time we looked at [the G8], we decided that we would continue to import it as a Chevrolet. It is kind of too good to waste." </em><br /></blockquote>Just a few days later, Blogger Bob sounded a bit less certain about the future of the G8 as Chevrolet. On the company's Fast Lane Blog, Lutz simply said "we're studying the feasibility of bringing (the G8) in as a Caprice for both law enforcement and the public." That doesn't sound nearly as certain as the <em>Automobile</em> interview. <br /><br />Kicking Tires reportedly received a similar statement from GM brass, saying "As part of its reinvention, General Motors is exploring every opportunity of effectively utilizing its global portfolio of vehicles, facilities and talent. While this exploration includes the possibility of extending imports of Holden vehicles (such as the recent Pontiac G8) to North America, no decision has been made at this time."<br /><br />We're hoping this is corporate speak for 'We're going to do what Bob says, but we just don't want to promise anything just yet.' Turning the G8 into a Chevrolet model looks to us like the cheapest possible way to keep a terrific vehicle available in the States, and with the Bowtie's significantly larger dealer network, maybe GM can finally figure out how to turn a profit with with the awesome Aussie.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevrolet-caprice-miiddle-east-market">2009 Chevrolet Caprice (Middle East)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevrolet-caprice-miiddle-east-market/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/09_caprice-arabia_002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevrolet-caprice-miiddle-east-market/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/09_caprice-arabia_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevrolet-caprice-miiddle-east-market/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/09_caprice-arabia_003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevrolet-caprice-miiddle-east-market/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/09_caprice-arabia_004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-chevrolet-caprice-miiddle-east-market/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/09_caprice-arabia_005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Sources: <a href="http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0807_bob_lutz_pontiac_g8_chevy_caprice/index.html">Automobile Magazine</a>; <a href="http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2009/07/not-so-fast-gm-not-sold-on-pontiac-g8-as-a-chevy.html">Kicking Tires</a>; <a href="http://www.autoobserver.com/2009/07/gms-lutz-already-making-em-nuts.html">Auto Observer</a>]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/14/gm-beginning-to-backpedal-on-lutz-g8-turning-caprice-comments/">GM beginning to backpedal on Lutz' G8-turning-Caprice comments?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 13:29:00 EST. <br />General Motors needs to move Pontiacs and pickup trucks, and the bankrupt automaker is once again breaking out some serious incentives to alleviate dealer stocks. The General is offering 0% financing for 72 months for the Vibe, G3, G5, G6 and G8, giving prospective car buyers the chance to get into one of the last Pontiacs ever made. The "72 Hour Sale" oddly begins today and runs through Monday, July 6, which is more than 72 hours - even when excluding the 4th of July weekend. <br /><br />GM is also using the sales event to move some of its slower-selling vehicles. The Chevrolet Impala, Silverado and Tahoe, as well as the GMC Sierra and Yukon will also have 72 month, 0% financing. Other vehicles will have 0% financing for 60 months, but they won't be part of the special 72 hour sale. <br /><br />While we're not planning to run out to the local Pontiac store for a new G3, if you would have told us a year ago that we could get a 361 hp G8 GT for about $400 a month, we'd be pretty stoked. <a href="http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090701/ANA05/306309937/1078&amp;AssignSessionID=373358681703341">Hit the jump</a> to scan the GM press release.<br /><br />[Source: General Motors]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/01/gm-ushers-in-misnamed-72-hour-sale-with-0-financing-on-many-p/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GM ushers in misnamed "72-Hour Sale" with 0% financing on many Pontiacs, Chevys, GMCs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/01/gm-ushers-in-misnamed-72-hour-sale-with-0-financing-on-many-p/">GM ushers in misnamed "72-Hour Sale" with 0% financing on many Pontiacs, Chevys, GMCs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 10:58:00 EST. <br />The Pontiac brand may be on its way out the door, but that doesn't mean it can't have one last fling with a renowned tuner. Hurst Performance Vehicles, the legendary shifter company that most recently has made waves with its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/19/how-its-made-hurst-hemi-dodge-challenger/">Hemi Challenger</a>, announced its new H.O. program for the Pontiac G6 and G8. Few details have been released regarding the performance upgrades of the cars, but each will feature Hurst's signature black/gold or white/gold paint scheme, forged alloy Hurst wheels, an exclusive Hurst shifter, supercharged engine, suspension upgrades, and a newly trimmed interior. <br /><br />To help with the development of the car, Hurst also brought on performance icon "Doc" Watson, who developed such vehicles as the Hurst Hemi-Under-Glass and the 1972 Pontiac SSJ. Only 52 Hurst H.O. Pontiacs will be built along with ten G6 convertibles used as parade and special event vehicles. More details regarding the performance upgrades will be announced on August 1st, but until then all the available information can be found in the press release after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/30/hurst-announces-pontiac-h-o-g8-and-g6/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hurst announces Pontiac H.O. <br />General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson held a web chat with journalists earlier today over at the automaker's Fastlane Blog. (Full transcript available <a href="http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/archives/2009/06/media_webchat_fritz_henderson_to_answer_media_questions.html">here</a>.) Now, despite <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/08/pontiac-g8-could-live-on-sans-pontiac-but-dont-hold-your-br/">persistent rumors to the contrary</a>, it's been reported a few times over that GM has no intention of resurrecting the Aussie-built Pontiac G8 under a different division, even though variants of the G8's Holden Commodore source material are sold in foreign markets under both the Chevrolet and Buick nameplates. This is a lamentable course of action, to say the least, because the G8 is a really good car. In particular, the G8 GT and GXP models are downright excellent. Towards the end of the web proceedings, <em>AutoWeek</em>'s Greg Migliore went to the well one last time on behalf of enthusiasts everywhere, asking Henderson if the G8 has any future under one of the "new" GM's remaining brands. <br /><em><br />14:45 [Comment From Greg Migliore--AutoWeek]<br />Does the Pontiac G8 have any kind of future within General Motors as a re-badged model? What kinds of changes would need to be made to the car for it to be sold under another brand?<br /><br />14:45 Fritz Henderson: I am not a fan of rebadging.</em><br /><br />That's a terse, disappointing, answer - especially considering that of GM's four remaining divisions, GMC is made up almost exclusively of warmed-over Chevrolets. <br />General Motors may have already buried its Pontiac division, but the brand's recent passing isn't stopping a posthumous recall campaign by the automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.<br /><br />The action, which covers some 35,038 Pontiac G8 sedans from the 2008 and 2009 model years, stems from two potential issues: <br /><br />1) The brake pedal position switch may be incorrectly programmed, which NHTSA says could lead to the brake lamps operating in a constant state of illumination, leaving trailing motorists unable to tell whether the G8 driver ahead of them is stepping on the binders or not. The defective taillamps could therefore contribute to an accident.<br /><br />2) In another programming issue, certain G8s make have tire pressure monitoring systems loaded with incorrect values, which could result in the system failing to identify under-inflated tires, potentially leading to reduced handling abilities and/or tire failure.<br /><br />According to NHTSA, Pontiac dealers will reprogram the brake position sensor and the remote control door lock receiver to remedy both issues. G8 drivers can expect the recall to begin by June 5, and anxious owners can call GM at 1-800-620-7668 to learn more. <span style="font-style: italic;">Thanks for the tip, Peter!</span><br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-pontiac-g8-gxp">In the Autoblog Garage: 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-pontiac-g8-gxp/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/pontiacg8gxp_abg_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-pontiac-g8-gxp/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/pontiacg8gxp_abg_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-pontiac-g8-gxp/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/pontiacg8gxp_abg_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-pontiac-g8-gxp/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/pontiacg8gxp_abg_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-pontiac-g8-gxp/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/11/pontiacg8gxp_abg_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong><font size="1">Live photos copyright (C)2008 </font></strong><a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/"><font size="1" color="#660066"><strong>Drew Phillips</strong></font></a><strong><font size="1"> / Weblogs, Inc.</font></strong><br />[Source: <a href="http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm?rcl_id=09V172&amp;searchtype=quicksearch&amp;summary=true&amp;refurl=email">NHTSA</a>]<br /><br /><br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/22/burying-the-dead-pontiac-g8-faces-recalls-over-faulty-taillamps/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Burying the Dead: Pontiac G8 faces recall over faulty taillamps, tire-pressure sensors</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/22/burying-the-dead-pontiac-g8-faces-recalls-over-faulty-taillamps/">Burying the Dead: Pontiac G8 faces recall over faulty taillamps, tire-pressure sensors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 22 May 2009 17:58:00 EST. Prior to this model, all previous Firehawk packages were fitted to the Firebird, a fact that has a number of SLP purists rather upset. Before we get to the specifications, perhaps we should remind Firebird fans that it could be worse: At least they didn't choose to revive the Firehawk name on a version of the new Camaro, right?<br /><br />As for the car, it sounds like a pretty nice package. To the stock V8 engine, SLP adds a supercharger that's similar to the one featured on the jaw-dropping Corvette ZR1, a stainless exhaust system and a cold air induction system. All that's good for an impressive 500 horsepower. Other mods include new 19-inch alloys painted up in gun metal gray and a sport suspension package. The car's most striking design element will surely be the flat black-painted hood, grille surrounds and rear spoiler - an obvious nod to the factory gaudiness of muscle cars from the late '60s and early '70s.<br /><br />Aside from the Firehawk name, the biggest issue that's likely to inhibit future SLP G8 ownership is surely the price. To the stocker's <span class="msrp">$32,440 base price, the SLP package adds a substantial $18,995, plus an extra $4,995 for an upgraded brake kit. For that kind of money, buyers could very nearly opt for a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/11/autoblog-exclusive-burning-rubber-in-the-2009-cadillac-cts-v-w/">Cadillac CTS-V</a> and be rewarded with its</span> amazing supercharged 6.2L V8 engine and 556 horsepower. Still want one? Check back with your favorite local Pontiac dealer on April 1st. No foolin'.<br /><br />[Source: SLP via <a href="http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f14/slp-releases-info-g8-firehawk-75822/">GM Inside News</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/23/pontiac-slp-firehawk-g8-gt-details-pricing-released/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pontiac SLP Firehawk G8 GT details, pricing released</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/23/pontiac-slp-firehawk-g8-gt-details-pricing-released/">Pontiac SLP Firehawk G8 GT details, pricing released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 08:57:00 EST. <br />Recent news that the G8 may never see a design cycle had us worried that the sport truck version of the RWD Pontiac may never see the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/23/rwd-pontiac-g8-will-be-dead-in-five-years/">light of day</a>. GM has <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/28/pontiac-g8-and-solstice-not-being-canceled/">shot down</a> any rumors concerning the demise of the G8, and Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson told our friend Mike Levine at PickupTrucks.com that the ST model is running on schedule, too. That's certainly good news, but unfortunately it'll be another full year before we see the ute-tastic pickup at your local dealer. <br /><br />Hopson also provided a reasonable expectation of the G8 ST's pricing. The 6.0L V8 model will hit your pocket book in the "low $30,000 range," which is right in line with <a href="http://autos.aol.com/cars-Pontiac-G8-2009/overview">what you'll pay</a> for a G8 GT today. Hopson also touched on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/20/2010-pontiac-g8-st-may-get-direct-inject-v6/">rumored V6 version</a> of the ST, saying that the odds were in favor of the more efficient powerplant going under-hood. It seems like it has already been too long since we first laid eyes on the G8 ST, and waiting another full year will be tough. At least we know Pontiac's incognito Holden will be reasonably priced when if finally gets here.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-p-o-n-t-ianda-c-gpontiac8-sport-truck">2010 Pontiac G8 ST</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-p-o-n-t-ianda-c-gpontiac8-sport-truck/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/g8stconcept_1024x768_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-p-o-n-t-ianda-c-gpontiac8-sport-truck/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/pontiac-g8-st-1280-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-p-o-n-t-ianda-c-gpontiac8-sport-truck/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/pontiac-g8-st-1280-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-p-o-n-t-ianda-c-gpontiac8-sport-truck/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/pontiac-g8-st-1280-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-p-o-n-t-ianda-c-gpontiac8-sport-truck/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/pontiac-g8-st-1280-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2008/10/2010-pontiac-g8.html">Pickuptrucks</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/29/pontiac-g8-st-expected-to-start-in-low-30k-range/">Pontiac G8 ST expected to start in low $30k-range</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 09:01:00 EST. <div align="center"><strong><em><small>Click above for high-res gallery of the 2008 Pontiac G8 GT</small></em></strong><br /></div>
<br />It looks like things will be getting a lot <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/08/pontiac-g8-gxp-officially-rated-at-415-hp/">less exciting</a> at Pontiac, as some reports indicate that the erstwhile performance brand will be losing its best performers. Despite the fact that the G8 sedan has seen nothing but <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/01/motor-trend-reveals-coty-contenders/">positive press</a> from the media, including your humble scribes <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/24/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/">here at Autoblog</a>, the realities of fuel economy and the global economy appear set to kill off the rear-wheel drive performance sedan in the prime of its short life. GM will reportedly not renew the G8 after its Holden-sourced chassis architecture is redesigned following a planned five-year run.<br /><br />The Pontiac <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/solstice/">Solstice</a> in both coupe and convertible forms is also unlikely to see a second generation. Unfortunately, the Solstice, Saturn Sky and their Opel spin-off don't generate enough sales to support <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/02/rumormill-gm-kills-the-kappa-ii-platform/">another go-round</a>, which could leave Pontiac with exactly zero vehicles with overtly sporting pretensions. While the G6 may be a decent car, it and a Cobalt derivative in the form of the G5 and a rebadged Aveo known as the G3 do not a BMW competitor make. What does this mean for the future of Pontiac as a brand? We'll see.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt">Review: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/00_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/07_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/01_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/08_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/02_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=134167">Inside Line</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/23/rwd-pontiac-g8-will-be-dead-in-five-years/">RWD Pontiac G8 will be dead in five years</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 09:58:00 EST. One of their topics of conversation with the product czar was manual transmissions, and it was reported that the '09 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/24/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/">Pontiac G8 GT</a> would be offered with an optional Tremec 6-speed manual transmission. This was certainly welcome news, both to us and readers. Unfortunately, it turns out that this information was, in fact, too good to be true. Pontiac's Jim Hopson dropped us a note this morning to clarify. In it, he writes, "We currently have no plans to offer the Tremec on any other G8 model (including the GT mentioned in the article), although it might be an option we could consider in the future." That's a bummer, and there you have it: The only way you'll be able to get a manual in the Pontiac G8 is if you pony up for the &uuml;ber-caliente GXP performance variant when it arrives later this year. Jim's email, in its entirety, is pasted after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt">Review: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/00_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/07_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/01_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/08_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/02_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Pontiac]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/24/correction-pontiac-g8-gt-will-not-have-an-optional-6-speed-stic/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Correction: Pontiac G8 GT will NOT have an optional 6-speed stick</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/24/correction-pontiac-g8-gt-will-not-have-an-optional-6-speed-stic/">Correction: Pontiac G8 GT will NOT have an optional 6-speed stick</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 08:59:00 EST. In fact, Pontiac advertised the 2008 model as just such a bargain: "Most powerful car starting under $30K," which is riding the line pretty close.<br /><br />But the company will have to ditch that ad campaign with the 2009 model as prices for a G8 GT will now begin at $31,360, or some $1,365 more than the previous year. Some of the cost is due to more standard luxuries like XM Radio, but at least part of the increase can be blamed on those familiar culprits of a weak U.S. dollar and rise in material costs. Still, we would've thought some of the car's cost was trimmed by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/12/useless-pontiac-g8-auxiliary-gauges-going-away-for-2009/">ditching the oversized auxiliary gauges</a> for the car's battery charge and oil pressure. Guess not.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt">Review: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/00_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/07_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/01_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/08_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/02_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.gminsidenews.com/">GM Inside News</a> via <a href="http://www.motorauthority.com/news/industry/pontiac-raising-the-g8-gts-price-for-2009/">Motor Authority</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/18/pontiac-g8-gt-no-longer-fastest-car-under-30k/">Pontiac G8 GT: No longer most powerful car under $30K</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 15:57:00 EST. First, there was the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/14/video-pontiac-g8-invades-spy-hunter-circa-1983/">Spy Hunter themed</a> TV spot, and now this one, which pays homage to the seminal car-guy experience of zooming around on a carpet in 1/64 scale. Hey, we're cool with that. The G8 GT does induce heart palpitations in many of us who still cling to our battle-scarred collection of now-vintage Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars with our initials etched into the underside. Like many of the other tiny cars we racked up miles on, a miniature G8 would have made us wish for either a shrink-ray, or a personal fortune by the time we hit 16 so we could buy a real one. <em>Video embedded after the jump. <br /><br /></em>[Source: <a href="http://www.adgabber.com/video/video/show?id=546804%3AVideo%3A85883">AdGabber</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/16/video-another-pontiac-g8-ad-that-goes-after-our-childhood/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO: Another Pontiac G8 ad that goes after our childhood</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/16/video-another-pontiac-g8-ad-that-goes-after-our-childhood/">VIDEO: Another Pontiac G8 ad that goes after our childhood</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 16 May 2008 19:32:00 EST. <br />As a tyke I staged an all-out assault on my parents' better judgment for a <a href="http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/84/whale/">G.I. Joe hovercraft</a>. Not three months had passed following their surrender when I ransomed my mischievousness for <em>the </em>next toy my happiness hinged upon. Oh, that hovercraft? Forgotten. The auto industry works the same way. We often convince automakers that we'll buy every cool car they'd make if they would just grow a pair and build 'em. They do their part and then... we don't. The trust is broken and we're back to buying what automakers know will sell. <br /><br />After much whining from performance enthusiasts, the rear-wheel-drive 2008 Pontiac G8 GT is finally here and at first glance is packing almost everything we wanted. Will GM be made to look like the pushover parent and left paying the bill for this Aussie import while customers shift their attention on to the next big thing, or will the G8 turn out to be the toy we never tire of? Read on to find out.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt">Review: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/00_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/07_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/01_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/08_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/02_pontiacg8_garage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>All photos (C) 2008 John Neff / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/24/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Review: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/24/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-pontiac-g8-gt/">Review: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 24 Apr 2008 11:59:00 EST. This phenomenon again holds true for the new Pontiac G8 GT. After having driven the sport sedan, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/29/first-drive-2008-pontiac-g8/">we remarked</a> that the sedan's 6.0-liter small block V8 engine provided "a glorious combination of aural assault and potent propulsion." We do love us some alliteration! Getting back to the dyno, the good people over at PCMforless have already put their new G8 GT on a Dynojet for a few pulls. The first pull yielded 286.62 ponies and the second, after a bit of tuning, wrung the bell at 310.37 galloping horses. Factoring in drivetrain loss of about 15%, those numbers are (surprise!) right in line with the 361 horsepower that Pontiac is claiming for the G8 GT. <br /><br />While over 300 horsepower is mighty impressive for a 30K-ish sport sedan, we'd be remiss if we didn't at least mention that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/15/new-york-08-preview-2009-pontiac-g8-gxp-packs-402-hp-and-a/">2009 G8 GXP</a> will be packing another 40 horsies underhood. Oh yeah... and a clutch. The car on hand was a red GT with an automatic transmission, the revised silver Pontiac badge, black leather seating. Unfortunately, the G8 at the event was eye candy only -- no driving allowed. Still, it was unlocked, and I was able to check out the production-spec interior up close. While we patiently await the arrival of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/07/introducing-the-pontiac-g8/">Pontiac G8 GT</a>, in Australia, multiple high-performance flavors of the VE Commodore its based on are available <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/22/holden-hsv-e-series-lineup-unveiled/">from HSV</a>. In the UK, one of those cars, the HSV Clubsport R8, is offered as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/26/vauxhall-vxr8-to-prowl-uk-roads/">Vauxhall VXR8</a>. <br /><br />With 412 horsepower (417 PS) and 405 lb-ft of torque on tap, one would think that the rebadged HSV would be sufficiently awesome for our former colonial overlords. One would also be incorrect. Carscoop reports the Brits will be offered a <em>supercharger</em> option that elevates power to a staggering 540 horses and adds 30-percent more torque (figure a new rating of 526 lb-ft or so). The non-supercharged VXR8 does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, so you can expect the blown sedan to shave a few more tenths off that number while making expensive tires cry for their mothers. The cost of the kit is &pound;6,995.<br /><br />Please, General: Pontiac G8 GXP Supercharged, okay?<em><br /><br />[Source: Carscoop]<br /><br /></em><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vauxhall-vxr8">Vauxhall VXR8</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vauxhall-vxr8/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/vauxhall_vxr8_hi_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vauxhall-vxr8/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/vauxhall_vxr8_hi_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vauxhall-vxr8/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/vauxhall_vxr8_hi_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vauxhall-vxr8/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/vauxhall_vxr8_hi_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/vauxhall-vxr8/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/vxr8_newhi001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><em /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/04/brits-get-supercharger-option-for-vauxhall-vxr8/">Brits get supercharger option for Vauxhall VXR8</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 08:25:00 EST. After tallying up 2,500+ votes, 63% of you said that yes, the checkbook would be broken out if that number is the real deal. And from the looks of things, a G8 GT for $35,000 <em>is</em> going to happen, as Pontiac's reps told us that the V8-powered car's pricing will indeed start "well under" that sum. Good news for those of you who've been waiting for a proper RWD American power sedan. It's been a while, but you'll get your wish, and parking one outside your house shouldn't break the bank (as long as the dealers don't go into full gank mode upon release, which is always a possibility).<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-pontiac-g8-1">2008 Pontiac G8</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-pontiac-g8-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/chi07_pontiac-g8---25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-pontiac-g8-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/chi07_pontiac-g8---21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-pontiac-g8-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/chi07_pontiac-g8---13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-pontiac-g8-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/chi07_pontiac-g8---20_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-pontiac-g8-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/02/chi07_pontiac-g8---18_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/21/sub-35k-pontiac-g8-gt-wins-over-autoblog-readers/">Sub-$35K Pontiac G8 GT wins over Autoblog readers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 21 Jun 2007 09:26:00 EST. That's pretty much the extent of it. We've got to believe that the sum refers to the G8 GT's starting price, as it's hard to imagine a fully-loaded version of the V8 muscle sedan coming in at or under $35K. We'd be happy to be pleasantly surprised, though. That would also let GM position a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/17/g8-gxp-research-hsv-clubsport-r8-spotted-in-troy-mi/">possible GXP version</a> in the $40K range if/when it's ultimately released.<br /><br /><strong>UPDATE: </strong>We reached out to GM on this. While G8 pricing is not yet finalized, the folks at the Pontiac division told us in no uncertain terms that "<font size="2" face="sans-serif">the G8 GT starting price will be <strong>well under that $35k price point</strong></font>."
