Feast your eyes upon the all-new 2014 Infiniti Q50. Say what you will about Infiniti's new Q and QX naming system, but after looking at the new Q50 unveiled today at the Detroit Auto Show and checking out its feature list, we're having a hard time coming up with any additional criticisms. The highlights of the Q50, which goes on sale this summer in the US, include the eye-catching design, innovative cabin technology and a fuel-efficient hybrid model.

The Infiniti G has always had a focus on leading-edge styling, and its replacement is no different. We can easily see that the basic theme of the Q50 was inspired by the Infiniti LE Concept we saw earlier in the year. The edges are a little toned down for the production design, but the overall look is there with the fluidic lines, crescent-shaped C-pillar, the now-signature grille and the horizontal headlights and taillights. Compared to the current G Sedan, the Q50 is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, and it's also more aerodynamic with a drag coefficient of just 0.26, putting in between the Chevrolet Volt (0.28) and the Toyota Prius (0.25).
Continue reading 2014 Infiniti Q50 debuts G-replacing design, new hybrid model

2014 Infiniti Q50 debuts G-replacing design, new hybrid model originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 Jan 2013 09:45:00 EST.
Well, what do we have here? It seems that Infiniti.ca, the official Canadian website of the Japanese automaker, accidentally published a load of 2014 Q50 images ahead of its official debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

As you can see in our high-res image gallery of screen shots above, the 2014 Infiniti Q50 carries along in the footsteps of the marque's current curvy design language. There's the requisite pinched chrome grille, upswept headlight clusters, and a hood with multiple flowing ridges, peaks and valleys.

As confusing as the newly Q-infused lineup may be on paper, there's simply no mistaking the new Q50 for anything but an Infiniti. You can expect a whole slew of images, facts, figures and commentary on the new luxury sedan on Monday, but until then, feel free to let us know what you think in the Comments.
2014 Infiniti Q50 hits the web early, courtesy of...
Infiniti rolled out the IPL version of its G37 Convertible at the Los Angeles Auto Show more than a year ago. The Infiniti Performance Line treatment logically mirrors that of the IPL G Coupe, meaning it receives both cosmetic and mechanical tweaks designed to raise the pulse of driving enthusiasts. Aside from the overstated aerodynamic styling components and huge exhaust tips, the cabin features special leather upholstery, aluminum trim and IPL badging to distinguish it from lesser siblings. Under the hood, the 3.7-liter V6 (VQ37VHR) has been recalibrated to deliver 343 horsepower - 18 more than the standard coupe - and 273 pound-feet of torque. The suspension has been upgraded with firmer spring and stabilizer bar rates, multi-piston sport brakes are fitted and 19-inch graphite-finish wheels wrapped with summer rubber are bolted on. There are only two exterior color choices (Moonlight White and Malbec Black) and two upholstery choices (Stone and IPL-exclusive Monaco Red). Everything sounds marvelous until someone reveals its as-tested $62,415 window sticker.

DRIVING NOTES

The three-section steel roof raises and lowers in a leisurely manner - give it about 30 seconds each way. While it is marvel to watch, the operation seems clunky, not fluid. Buttoned up, with all four windows closed, the cabin is comfortable. Wind noise is minimal and the front buckets coddle passengers in all the right places. While tight, those of smaller stature will find the two rear seats tolerable for short journeys (my kids never complained). Outward visibility is also very good for a convertible - no impeding B-pillar.

Top down driving is pleasant, with wind buffeting minimal even without the optional rear wind deflector (on the window sticker, but missing from my tester). I rolled up the windows, turned the climate-controlled front seats on high, cranked the heater and blasted the impressive 13-speaker Bose audio system. Roofless driving in low 50-degree temperatures was bearable. (Note: When the convertible top is stowed away, the already small trunk is basically nonexistent)

Infiniti's IPL-tweaked V6 looks great on paper, but it struggles to move the droptop with real authority. Blame a curb weight of 4,189 pounds - a whopping 400 pounds more than the IPL G Coupe - and a very uncooperative seven-speed automatic transmission. Peak horsepower and torque come late in the power band, yet the slushbox wants to shift early. While things are slightly better in Sport mode, or with the manual magnesium column-mounted paddle shifters, it doesn't feel nearly as quick in real-world driving as its published acceleration times would indicate. My overall average fuel economy was also a less-than-impressive 16.8 mpg.

Those goofy cannon-size exhaust tips (each is 4.75-inches across) deliver a drone that becomes downright annoying at some speeds. Even more frustrating, there is noticeable body flex - this is not a very stiff convertible - and minor squeaks and groans become evident when the road turns rough.

The upgraded suspension provides a harsh ride, but little else. The Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires are capable, but when pushed, their narrow front contact patches - only 225/60YR19 - quickly scrubbed in protest of the two-plus tons of mass abusing them. The brakes calipers are beefy, but the street-compound pads don't instill confidence.

A high sticker price, middling performance and other small annoyances really work against the Infiniti IPL G Convertible, especially when you consider that the same money will put a base BMW 335is Convertible, Audi S5 Cabriolet or even a Shelby GT500 Convertible in the driveway.

2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 14:58:00 EST.
Oh boy, this is about to get confusing with a capital Q.

Infiniti has just announced a brand-new scheme that calls for completely new model names across its entire lineup of vehicles. Making things even more difficult will be the fact that all coupes, convertible and sedans will get a Q prefix while all crossovers and SUVs will be prefixed with QX.

Further muddying the waters, previous engine displacement monikers will be replaced by a double-digit number "representing hierarchy within the range." Put less simply, the slot in the lineup currently held by the G Sedan will be called Q50 while the G Coupe and Convertible will be called Q60. Q70 will replace the M Sedan at the top of the automaker's lineup of cars.

On the truck side, the range-topping QX is now the QX80. Sitting below is the QX70, which was formerly the FX, then the QX60 that used to be the JX and finally the QX50, which was but is no longer the EX. Qonfused yet?

Getting back to the G... excuse us, Q50, this is the new sedan that Infiniti had previously announced would be debuting at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Best we can tell, this is a replacement for the old G Sedan, and it will sit below the currently available G Coupe and G Convertible, which will be renamed Q60.

The Q50 will be the first model from Infiniti to fall into the new Q-based naming convention, with the rest of the automaker's lineup falling into place as 2014 models are announced. Infiniti said on a conference call that this move was necessary as the brand branches out beyond the United States.

"This strategic change reflects Infiniti's desire for clarity and cohesiveness," says the press release, which you can read below. Hopefully, that will clear everything up for you...
Continue reading Infiniti queues up questionable Q and QX naming scheme

Infiniti queues up questionable Q and QX naming scheme originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Dec 2012 19:00:00 EST.
While the automotive world may currently be focused on the Los Angeles Auto Show, those looking to stay ahead of the curve have their sights set farther down the road. One such automaker is Infiniti. On the first of the LA press days, the Japanese luxury brand has announced an all-new model to debut in Detroit this January.

According to Infiniti, an all-new model will be unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto show. The debut will be accompanied by a performance from world renowned Cirque Du Soleil as well as a live stream simulcast of the event.

It's unclear whether Infiniti will be showing a redesign of the G sedan, which has been spotted testing, or a new sub-G compact performance-luxury four-door. We will know for sure on January 14 when we bring you news form the Infiniti stand.

The presentation will also include an map of Infiniti's strategy moving forward, by president Johan de Nysschen. De Nysschen was appointed in July of this year, following the move of Infiniti's headquarters to Hong Kong. According to Infiniti, the luxury brand is aiming at a "new era of inspiration, growing its market share, with the strategic expansion of its business worldwide." This all-new vehicle will be an integral element to any future expansion for the Japanese automaker.
Continue reading Infiniti confirms all-new sports sedan will debut in Detroit

Infiniti confirms all-new sports sedan will debut in Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 16:21:00 EST.
According to Cars UK, the next-generation Infiniti G37 sedan will likely debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show next January. We recently spied working prototypes of the new Infiniti out testing, and despite being slathered in camouflage, we have a good idea of how the company's new BMW 3 Series rival will look. Sort of.

The new G will indeed have a more rakish, curvy body, taking many of its cues from the stunning Emerg-E concept that first debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. We can clearly see LED lighting up front, as well as some new lighting elements adhered to the car's rump, as well.

Currently, the only engine offered in the G range is the 3.7-liter naturally aspirated V6, but that's expected to change. Earlier reports have suggested that a wide range of new engines could be fitted under the G's hood, including a diesel powerplant that comes as part of Renault-Nissan's partnership with Daimler. A turbocharged engine and hybrid model could be in the works, as well.

We'll likely have more details after the turn of the year, if not sooner. Stay tuned.
2014 Infiniti G37 headed for Detroit Auto Show reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 15:30:00 EST.
After already seeing a test mule of the new Infiniti G37, dressed up in the current car's clothes, we knew that it was only a matter of time before the prototypes started hitting the roads for testing. And here they are.

Clad in your typical head-to-toe camouflage, the identity of the new-look G is nevertheless apparent from the outset. The same basic proportions of the good-looking current car are in evidence here, but even with the disguising frock, the surfacing on the hood and flanks of this machine seem more complexly curved than before. We can see LED lighting elements, probably turn signals, on the lower front fascia of the 2014 Infiniti, as well as lights on the rear bumper where none exist on the current model.

There are no firm technical details about the new G37 as of yet, though we assume we'll hear more about the range before its expected release date in the second half of 2013.
Next Infiniti G37 sedan nearly ready to take on BMW 3 Series originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 13:31:00 EST.
The Infiniti Inspired Performers series takes Red Bull Formula One team drivers out of the cockpit and into videos that require a different skill set. As part of his ongoing role in the campaign, Sebastian Vettel has now given up kung-fu in China on the Mission Impossible set for wheelman work in New Jersey on a music video set with singer Melanie Fiona and the song "Watch Me Work."

Sure, driving and drifting an Infiniti G37 Convertible doesn't sound like a big step away from his day job, but Vettel also helps get the party started, and gets to play DJ. You can watch him and Fiona work in the video below, plus have a look at the behind-the-scenes.
Continue reading Sebastian Vettel and Melanie Fiona star in new music video

Sebastian Vettel and Melanie Fiona star in new music video originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 31 Aug 2012 19:59:00 EST.
Formula One is coming back to the United States, and coming back in a big way. Not only is the circus rolling in to Austin, Texas, this year for the re-inauguration of the United States Grand Prix, but next year, the championship calendar is slated to include a second race - dubbed the Grand Prix of America - at a new track being carved out of city streets at Port Imperial, New Jersey, just across the river from Manhattan.

It will be a while before the track is completed, but that type of minor detail isn't enough to stop a driver like Sebastian Vettel. The defending two-time World Champion headed down to Jersey after the Canadian Grand Prix to drive the proposed layout of the track, which local police were kind enough to close down for the day. Both Vettel and team ambassador David Coulthard pulled some donuts and drove some dignitaries around the circuit-to-be in a pair of Infiniti G37 IPL Coupe models against the New York City backdrop, as you can see for yourself in the high-res image gallery above and the four-and-a-half minutes of B-roll footage (together with the press release) below.
Continue reading Sebastian Vettel drives upcoming grand prix circuit in New Jersey [w/video]

Sebastian Vettel drives upcoming grand prix circuit in New Jersey [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Jun 2012 16:58:00 EST.
If Sebastian Vettel's foray into the Kung Fu movie scene struck you as a bit of a stretch, this latest publicity stunt from Infiniti and Red Bull could be more your speed.

While in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, Australian Formula One driving ace Mark Webber headed up to north the ICAR circuit at Mirabel airport - the same place where we were schooled by the Jacques Villeneuve Academy a couple of years back - for another kind of race altogether.

That's where he met up with Jon DeVore, a competitive skydiver also sponsored by Red Bull and Infiniti. Jon showed Mark how to use a wind tunnel for something other than testing the aerodynamics of his racing car and Mark showed Jon how to get the most out of an Infiniti G37S on the track. The day culminated as it only could: with a race.

Webber took off from the start/finish line at ICAR at the same time that DeVore jumped out of a helicopter and both raced - one flat and one free-falling - towards the checkered flag. Scroll down to watch the video clip for the results and for the full press release, and scope out the high-resolution images in the gallery above for a closer look at the action.
Continue reading Watch F1's Mark Webber race a skydiver in Montreal [w/video]

Watch F1's Mark Webber race a skydiver in Montreal [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Jun 2012 19:01:00 EST.
Remember when the price of entry to the "entry-level luxury" space was around $30,000? These days, that's the average price of a new car, nevermind something with premium brand cachet attached. Forgive our rose-colored glasses for a moment, but we've just come across the pricing announcement for the new-for-2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible and it starts at $60,600, *plus $895 for delivery. (If a fixed head is more your speed, the IPL G Coupe starts at $50,500). That's a whole lot of ducats.

Of course, this is the full-tilt Infiniti Performance Line model, with its 343-horsepower 3.7-liter VQ V6, spidery 19-inch wheels, tightened-up suspension, sportier exhaust and the buyer's choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed paddleshift automatic, to say nothing of the trick folding hardtop.

In truth, Infiniti's rivals from Bavaria ask even more for their BMW 335is convertible ($60,800) and it only has 320 horsepower. Audi and its 333-hp S5 Convertible is a wee bit lighter on the wallet, meanwhile, commanding at least $59,300 and offering all-wheel drive, but it doesn't make the same sexy noise that the the IPL does.

Of course, Infiniti still has some nice G models in the 30-$omething range and there's a full family of models in between to satisfy every junior executive's wallet. Us? If we really wanted a droptop from Nissan's upscale outpost, we'd probably forgo the IPL bits and content ourselves with the far less costly G37 Convertible - all $46,650 and 325-horsepower's worth - at least until the rumored 530-hp, twin-turbo IPL arrives.

Brands like Infiniti built their empires convincing the world that the badge on the hood shouldn't matter nearly as much as the bones underneath, but Japan's cadre of luxury brands isn't the only group peddling bang for the buck these days. Manufacturers from Kia to Volkswagen now come with cabins packed with luxury amenities. Even the lowly Ford Fiesta can offer buyers high-quality leather seating and enough technology to put the subcompact into geosynchronous orbit. So why bother stepping up to the mid-level luxury league at all? What differentiates a nice car from a fine automobile beyond a little inflection and a lot of marketing?

European brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz happily prattle on about pedigree and superior engineering, but at the end of the day, a luxury machine simply has to feel special. Foodies often speak of the fifth flavor, umami. Directly translated, the word means "good taste" with an element of savoriness, and automotive luxury is built on that same intangible sensation. Perhaps better than either Acura or Lexus, Infiniti has become a master of that something special, offering its customers elegant style, well-crafted interiors, innovative technology and a superb driving experience. The 2012 Infiniti G25 looks to add superior fuel economy to that list, but can it do so without losing its luxury essence?

2012 Infiniti G25 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 May 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz have spent the past two years becoming BFFs under the covers of their small cars. In addition to the production version of the Infiniti Etherea using the Mercedes A-Class platform and Nissan making engines for Mercedes in Tennessee, two years ago it was reported that the next Infiniti G would get engines from the German automaker. As the launch draws nearer, a report in Autocar indicates that Mercedes four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines will be under the hood from the beginning.

Infiniti has been investing heavily in growing the brand across the world, especially in Europe. The G range had no four-pot in the lineup, and without that, few buyers would even consider it. Having economical engines right from the start will at least give purchasers a reason to cross-shop the G with the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, its target market. It will need that expanded consideration to move from 2011's 145,000 global sales to the 500,000 sales it seeks in 2016.

If you're wondering why Mercedes would provide engines and know-how to an entry-level luxury car that competes against the 3 Series, one of Mercedes main rivals, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said there's no overlap. "People buying Infiniti or Daimler, they don't cross-shop between the two brands.... We came to the conclusion that Mercedes collaborating with Infiniti will not be hurting each other."
Next Infiniti G to use Mercedes-sourced engines originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2012 14:31:00 EST.
We certainly like the idea behind the Infiniti Performance Line, but execution has left us largely underwhelmed. Instead of an M or AMG fighter, buyers are left with little more than fancy paint and a stiffer suspension. But according to Motor Trend, Infiniti may have something more impressive brewing.

An unnamed source spilled the goods on the future of the G line, including a juicy detail about a hyper performance coupe. The next-generation G is set to hit the market during the summer of 2014, bringing with it a rash of changes.

One of those is the introduction of an IPL-specific 3.7-liter V6. The source claims the engine is all-new and features direct-injection and two turbos to help it produce a whopping 530 horsepower. This time, it seems Infiniti has its heart set on stepping up to the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and BMW M3. The engine will be built in Japan alongside the powerplant for the Nissan GT-R.

Now for the bad news. The shadowy source says the high-performance IPL will be priced in line with the GT-R, at least in Japan. On this side of the globe, the brawny Nissan commands a price well north of the $58,930 MSRP on the C63 AMG, which leads us to believe there's still some pricing to be sorted out on that front.
Infiniti working on 530-HP twin-turbo IPL model for G originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 16:58:00 EST.
We already had reason to believe that the next generation of the Infiniti G is poised to add a few new variants, including a diesel model, thanks to recent Nissan trademark filings. But now our spy shooters have caught some Infiniti development mules out in the wild, cars they say sounded like diesels.

There's not too much that can be seen in these photos, as the mule uses a modified current-gen body. But the car definitely looks like it has a wider track, which could point to the next G being a bit larger (or at least meaning it's not going to shrink). We can also see two extra air intakes in the front bumper, just under the grille.

The photographers tell us that the cars were snapped near a Mercedes-Benz test facility in Northern Sweden, leading us to assume that a diesel G is likely to be powered by an engine developed out of the Daimler-Renault-Nissan partnership that was announced two years ago.

Infiniti's rival to the BMW 3 Series is known by just one letter - that letter, of course, being G - but the range is expanding beyond the solitary G35 that had been the mainstay of the line for years. The G35 was succeeded by the G37 (pictured above) and recently supplemented by the smaller-displacement G25, but emerging reports indicate that Infiniti has a whole raft of new versions on their way.

The report from Car and Driver is bolstered by tell-tale trademark applications for the nameplates G35h, G30t and G22d. The numbers tell us something, but it's the lower-case letters that follow which really indicate what to expect. The G35h, then, could seemingly adapt the hybrid powertrain currently found in the M35h, coupling a 3.5-liter V6 with electric assist. The G30t suggests a turbocharged engine is in the pipeline, though it's too early to tell if the spool would be fitted to a four- or six-cylinder engine. Finally, a G22d could join the range of diesel models which Infiniti currently offers in Europe.

We'll have to wait and see if and when the Nissan premium marque rolls out these model variants on its mainstay line of sedans, coupes and convertibles, but the trademark filings at least give some guidelines to our anticipation.
Infiniti files for G35h, G30t and G22d trademarks originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 16:01:00 EST.
There's an almost infinite amount to love about the Infiniti G37 line. In sedan or coupe form, X or S guise, the vehicles deliver that difficult-to-attain blend of rear-wheel-biased performance, content and refinement with a manageable price tag. With the excellent VQ37 3.7-liter V6 engine pounding under the hood and the buyer's choice of manual or automatic gearboxes pushing power to the rear or all four wheels, the G37 family is one of the market's best arguments against sliding behind the wheel of a BMW 3 Series. That is, unless you wanted a truly serious performance machine.

German titans like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been lapping European racetracks under their M and AMG banners for decades, honing performance hardware that customers would merrily plop down fat stacks of cash for later. While Japanese luxury automakers have been somewhat slow to embrace performance sub-brands, recent years have seen an explosion of consonant-laced badging stuck to sharper machinery. Among Japanese automakers, Lexus first dipped a toe in those waters with the company's F-Sport goods, and Infiniti has risen to the challenge with its new Infiniti Performance Line. By gracing the G37 Coupe with more horsepower, a sharper suspension, larger brakes and unique interior appointments, Infiniti has taken a first step into a world dominated by some of the world's most storied badges.

But is the IPL G37 a serious performance contender or simply a bolt-on queen with delusions of grandeur?
Continue reading 2012 Infiniti G37 IPL

2012 Infiniti G37 IPL originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 11:55:00 EST.
Nissan is recalling certain 370Z and Infiniti G37 Coupe models due to an improperly calibrated auto-reverse feature on the vehicle's windows. Around 1,788 2011 and 2012 models may have been built with a window switch controller that won't actuate the auto-reverse quickly enough. Should someone accidentally get a body part trapped in the window, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a "pinch injury" may result. It's unclear whether anyone has been injured as a result of the calibration error at this juncture, but Nissan says that the automaker will fix the power window switches free of charge.

The recall is set to begin around November 28, and owners of affected vehicles can expect to hear from Nissan shortly about the program. Hit the jump to read the full recall notice.
Continue reading Nissan 370Z and Infiniti G37 recalled over pinching windows

Nissan 370Z and Infiniti G37 recalled over pinching windows originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 18:45:00 EST.
Any luxury automaker worth its burlwood has to have a performance division. BMW has M. Mercedes-Benz has AMG. Audi's Quattro GmbH churns out S and RS models. Lexus has the letter F. Cadillac has V. And Infiniti has IPL.

The Infiniti Performance Line launched last summer with the IPL G Coupe, essentially a G37 Coupe that'd been fiddled with for an extra measure of sportiness. Much speculation and anticipation followed as to what the IPL team would do next - leading to rumors over potential tie-ins with Red Bull Racing and Mercedes-AMG - but a Sebastian Vettel edition FX55 notwithstanding, this has been the first follow-up product since.

Previewed in thinly disguised concept form just a month after the coupe's debut, the IPL G Convertible is set to make its production debut at today's Los Angeles Auto Show. It's essentially the same as the coupe, only with the retractable hardtop of the G37 Convertible on which it's based. The 3.7-liter V6 has had its mapping adjusted and breathing optimized to generate 343 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque - 18 and 6 more than stock, respectively, but 5 and 3 less than the coupe despite more heft to move.

Power is driven to the rear wheels exclusively via a seven-speed paddle-shifting, rev-matching automatic transmission. Other enhancements enacted for the IPL G Convertible include a firmed-up suspension, 14-inch front brakes rotors (13.8 in the rear) with alloy calipers, 19-inch alloys, and a revised aero kit. Only two colors are available - Moonlight White and Malbec Black - while the leather interior can be had in Stone or Monaco Red. Like what you see?
We have no way of knowing exactly how much Infiniti has dished out on its partnership with the Red Bull Racing team and with its star driver Sebastian Vettel specifically, but you can bet it's a lot. You can also bet that the Japanese luxury marque is keen on capitalizing on its sponsorship deal beyond the logos that appear on the race cars and racing suits.

In fact, Infiniti is said to be working on two collaborative projects with the reigning world champions it sponsors; one with the team and one with the driver. Now, with the Frankfurt Motor Show approaching as fast as Vettel into a hairpin corner, the automaker has released a video that seems to suggest that it's ready to unveil the Sebastian Vettel edition.

Edition of what, we don't know just yet, but while logic might point us at first towards the G37 coupe, they've already taken that model pretty far with the Infiniti Performance Line. Instead, we have a feeling we'll be looking at a special edition of the FX crossover. We'll have to wait a little longer as the show's opening nears, but for now you're invited to view the video after the jump and arrive at your own conclusions.
Continue reading Infiniti to unveil Sebastian Vettel edition FX in Frankfurt?

Infiniti to unveil Sebastian Vettel edition FX in Frankfurt? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 16:29:00 EST.
