Mazda offers a good reason to choose an automatic - Click above to watch the video after the break

Generally speaking, all of us at Autoblog prefer to drive a manual. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. For instance, driving a supremely sedate luxury car with anything other than a sit-back-and-relax automatic gearbox doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Also, when stuck in gridlock traffic, who wants to deal with a clutch pedal?

And then there's the odd situation presented in our Funny Car Commercial of the Day. We'll set the scene: There's a young man driving an old station wagon with a manual transmission. Add one beautiful Italian blonde with long legs and a short skirt who just happens to need a ride. And she apparently wants some attention.

We love kids... other people's kids, that is. Yours truly doesn't have any progeny of his own to look after, so the need for a vehicle that has loads of interior space is mostly lost on me. If you do have some screaming little'uns to look after, though, your vehicular choices suddenly become a bit narrower in focus, and things like folding rear seats, power liftgates and rear-seat entertainment systems begin to look less like unnecessary expenses and more like valuable life- and time-savers.

Regardless of whether or not you have kids of your own, you've surely been trapped inside a moving vehicle full of the little buggers. Mazda's commercial advertisements have long relied on the "Zoom Zoom" catchphrase, denoting that the assorted vehicles from the Japanese automaker are more fun to drive than their more staid competition. But eventually even Mazda drivers need to find a parking spot after Zoom Zooming themselves around all day.

Plus, even the smallest and most practical of cars, in this case a diminutive Mazda2 from the United Kingdom, have trouble parallel parking into the tight confines of an urban parking spot... unless, of course, there happens to be a Rube Goldburg-esque (though imminently more simplistic) contraption in place to ease the sketchy situation.

Toyota Australia Camry Hybrid advertisement - Click above to watch the video after the break

Here's a worthwhile goal: Let's see if we can get through this entire post without even mentioning unintended acceleration or recalls. Whoops. Let's talk about something else, shall we? How about the movie (500) Days of Summer, which we saw not too long ago on the big screen.

Perhaps our favorite scene from the movie, which was all-around pretty good, was when Tom Gordon, ably played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, danced his way through the city after, ahem... well, let's just say he had himself a good day. And that Zooey Deschanel is as cute as a button, assuming that brunette button were to have lovely light blue eyes and a great smile.

Anyway, it was a memorable scene. And Toyota's Australian arm seems to have noticed it as well, using a very similar tactic for a new commercial highlighting the new locally built Toyota Camry Hybrid. Have we mentioned how much we love ourselves some classic Hall and Oates? No? Well, never mind then. Just watch the video after the break for some classic '80s goodness. Thanks for the tip, Mark!

Being the type of people who obsessively cover the auto industry, we generally prefer four-wheeled travel to pedal-for-yourself bicycling. Not that riding a bike is a bad thing... quite the opposite, actually. Getting out, seeing the sights and smelling the fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of the city is a great way to spend some free time and maybe put a dent in the ol' blogger spare tire.

That said, if we've got somewhere to be, like, say, meeting up with some old Italian friends at the local wine bar, we'd certainly opt for the car. These days, cars and trucks need to pass a slew of strict testing procedures before they can be certified for sale. Included among these procedures are tests for safety, emissions, performance and reliability. Though they're surely a hassle for automakers and one reason it's so difficult to bring a new model to market, these tests are also why today's cars are better than they've ever been before.

Apparently, things are done a little differently in Europe. While we might have guessed that today's Funny Car Commercial was made by Citroen - quite possibly the quirkiest automaker in existence - the advertisement is actually from French automaker Renault. As someone who happened to have grown up in snowy climes of the Great Lakes States for the first 25 years of life, this author knows exactly how nasty it can be in the morning to walk out of your nice, toasty house on a cold and blustery winter day.
