If you aren't terrified on some primordial level of the funny car drag racing class, odds are it's only a matter of time before natural selection comes a-callin'. Most funnies run a variation on the 500 cubic-inch, supercharged big-block formula while slurping down nitromethane/methanol fuel by the drum. No one's exactly sure how much power these suckers dish out, but estimates in the 8,000 pony range are typically considered conservative. Yeah. Wrap your noggin around that one for half a second. The whole concoction is designed to hold together just long enough scoot down the eighth or quarter mile, so it should come as no surprise that accidents happen.

We don't want to blow the surprise for you (you'll have to watch the video for that), but according to the video's YouTube comments, the son of the driver was beginning to check his dad's car over one last time when the vehicle's supercharger broke a stud. Hit the jump to see what happened next.

Mazda's commercial advertisements have long relied on the "Zoom Zoom" catchphrase, denoting that the assorted vehicles from the Japanese automaker are more fun to drive than their more staid competition. But eventually even Mazda drivers need to find a parking spot after Zoom Zooming themselves around all day.

Plus, even the smallest and most practical of cars, in this case a diminutive Mazda2 from the United Kingdom, have trouble parallel parking into the tight confines of an urban parking spot... unless, of course, there happens to be a Rube Goldburg-esque (though imminently more simplistic) contraption in place to ease the sketchy situation.

Due to the tragic death recently of '94 and '95 Top Fuel champion Scott Kalitta, the drag strip for these two fastest classes will be shortened from the traditional 1,320 feet to 1,000 feet. Race officials and team managers believe that this compromise will continue to make for an entertaining race as the cars will still be hitting speeds of around 300 mph. This is an interim change as the sanctioning body investigates the crash and its causes, and will stay in effect until more definite changes can be made. The first race which will incorporate the new shorter track length will take place on July 11-13 at the Mopar Mile High Nationals in Denver, Colorado.

[Source: NHRA via AutoWeek]
Safety concerns cause NHRA to limit races to 1,000 feet originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 10:02:00 EST. Take this one, for instance. We saw the Metro hot-rod cruising the avenue and finally caught it parked, but sans owner. The Geo Metro's stock three-cylinder motor has been replaced with a more potent mill and rear-wheel drive drivetrain.

Follow the jump for a full gallery of funny cars and shots from the 2006 Woodward Dream Cruise, along with our own commentary in some cases.
