It seems like the commercial van market is booming at the moment. After years of consumers being limited to elderly choices like the Ford E-Series, Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana and various Dodge/Ram models, these days, buyers have fresh options in multiple sizes from companies like Ford, Ram and Nissan. Now, Mercedes-Benz is previewing an expansion of its van lineup with concept versions of a new midsize commercial van called Metris at this week's SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
Autoblog director of photography Drew Phillips is reporting that Unlimited Exhibition Class driver Mike Ryan has suffered a significant crash during the end of today's practice session for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
So, it's a safe bet that the following video is the craziest thing you'll see all day. Maybe this week, and quite possibly, this month. It stars, in no particular order, a drifting Freightliner semi driven by Pikes Peak champ Mike Ryan, a dock worker/stuntman being pulled behind said semi, a Ford Crown Victoria driving on two wheels, a drifting Nissan 240SX Coupe, two ramps, a row of Smart Fortwo minicarsand the Long Beach harbor. Yes, this is the sequel to the original "Size Matters."
It looks like Optimus Prime could have some ten-wheeled competition when Transformers 4 hits theaters next year. Michael Bay's website has released an image showing the latest character to join the movie's robot alien cast, and while the previous character reveals were all Autobots, this dark and ominous Freightliner is almost certainly a Decepticon.
It seems as if every type of powered vehicle is attacking the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb these days, each in search of a new record as they climb the 12.42-mile road course to its finish at a gasping 14,110-foot elevation. While the "anything goes" Unlimited class provides plenty of powerful eye candy, the Open class is where we find Mike Ryan and his new Freightliner Cascadia Pikes Peak Special.
Last week, Mercedes-Benz released the details for the updated 2013 Sprinter intended for global markets, but this week it has announced what changes are being made to the US-spec version of the van for the 2014 model year, including the Freightliner model. As expected, most of the changes made to the European model will be present on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter when it goes on sale in the US, which is expected to be this fall.
Freightliner is stealing the spotlight at this week's Mid-America Trucking Show in Kentucky with a new truck concept. The Revolution Innovation is aimed squarely at reimagining the face commercial trucking. With innovations like a more aerodynamic body, cold-rolled aluminum frame that's 200 pounds lighter than its steel equivalent, low-slung engine placement and an intelligent rear axle that can automatically switch between four and six-wheel drive as needed, the concept is more fuel efficient w
Mike Ryan is our kind of insane. Not only did the man fling his Freightliner race truck up the winding side of Mount Washington earlier this year, but the professional stunt and race driver has also joined forces with drifting legend Sam Hubinette for a little exhibition show during round six of the Formula Drift Championship.
After hooking up with Enova Systems for an electric drivetrain and with Tesla Motors for a battery pack, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) has now teamed with Morgan Olson to create an appropriate walk-in van (WIV) body to wrap the entire package in. Dubbed the MT-EV, the new clean sheet design puts an emphasis on aerodynamics and driver comfort.
UPS and its competitors at FedEx and DHL have all been testing a variety of hybrid drive delivery vans for several years now. Recently, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory completed a twelve-month evaluation of six hybrid vans being used by UPS in the Phoenix, Arizona area and the results were good. Very good, in fact. After twelve months of operation, the hybrid vans averaged 28.9 percent lower fuel consumption than similar conventional diesel vans. Even with the extra cost of the hybrid v
Freightliner is now taking orders for its new ecoFred motorhome chassis, the first of its kind in the large RV market. The new chassis uses a Cummins 6.7-liter diesel inline-6 with an Eaton automated-manual transmission. In between the auto-clutch and the gearbox is a motor-generator that provides regenerative braking, auto-stop and electric drive capabilities. Electrical storage comes by way of a lithium ion battery pack although the capacity and source are not specified.
When we last heard from Electric Vehicles International (EVI) they were displaying a trio of trucks at the Work Truck Show in Chicago that they had electrified at their facility in Mexico. Fast forward 7 months and we find none other than Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on hand for the grand opening of the company's relocated international headquarters in Stockton, California and a whole new slate of product in the works. EVI has partnered with a handful of companies, most significantly battery-m
It seems as though the entry of newcomers Modec and Smith Electric Vehicles (and maybe even Boulder Electric Vehicles) into the North American electric truck market has prompted Freightliner to set about putting their own all-electric chassis together. To help speed things along, they have enlisted the aid of Enova Systems, a company with hybrid and electric vehicle experience. Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation and the California cleantech firm have signed a Letter of Intent that will see
Daimler Truck North America's Freightliner division has collaborated with Eaton to produce the first hybrid truck for hazardous material transport. The first Freightliner Business Class M2e is going to propane distribution company Pennington Gas Service. Freightliner has been offering the Eaton hybrid system for other applications for some time and gas company owner Keith Pennington wanted a more environmentally friendly alternative for his fleet.
