Someone at the Frankfurt Motor Show caught Volkswagen Group CEO Martin Winterkorn investigating a Hyundai i30 <strike>as if he was</strike> just like one would expect from an intrigued engineer at a rival company. It might be too much to infer that the Herr Doctor is impressed by what he finds, but there is no doubt that he's got some questions that will need answering when he leaves.

At about 1:45, while sitting in the cabin, he adjusts the steering wheel and begins to query his seconds on what he discovers. As far as our native German speaking helper could tell, Winterkorn wants to know how Hyundai managed to make an adjustment mechanism that doesn't make any noise, going so far as to say, "How do they do it? BMW can't do it, we can't do it... no clanging!" And then one of the gentlemen appears to answer, "We had a solution but it was too expensive..."

Follow the jump for the video and our best attempt to transcribe what Winterkorn says. Feel free to fill in the blanks in the comments, and we believe this officially means everyone is watching Hyundai. Closely.
Continue reading What can Hyundai do silently and inexpensively that Volkswagen and BMW can't?

What can Hyundai do silently and inexpensively that Volkswagen and BMW can't? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 19:29:00 EST.
Before we delve into the details of the RAK e electric concept, let's step back in time with a brief historical primer. The oldest industrial division within General Motors' current portfolio, Opel started as a sewing machine manufacturer way back in 1862. Evolving to the production of bicycles soon after, Opel's presence in wheeled transportation turned to automobiles in 1899. Now, at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Opel looks to the future with its debut of the ultra-modern RAK e Concept.

Back in 1928, Opel captivated the media with its experimental rocket-powered RAK 2. Its streamlined shape and solid-fuel rocket propulsion system demonstrated Opel's vision of the future. Developed 83 years after the RAK 2, the RAK e tandem 1+1 concept projects Opel's take on personal urban mobility.

As an experimental design and technical platform, the RAK e is a narrow four-wheeler built around a steel space frame. Built with an eye toward inexpensive materials, the RAK e is a lightweight (838 pounds) concept presented as a vehicle that Opel says even the youngest of buyers could afford.

Propulsion for the RAK e comes from a 49-horsepower electric motor that draws juice from a five-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Range is listed at up to 62 miles and operating costs are claimed to be only one euro per 100 kilometers ($2.19 per 100 miles).

Many cars have come and gone claiming to be "race cars for the road," but few actually live up to it. Not Radical, though. The British automaker does one thing and one thing only, and that's making Le Mans Prototype-style track cars that you can - technically speaking, at least - drive on the street. (That, and regularly trouncing six- and seven-figure supercars around the Nürburgring to continuously hold the vaunted lap record.)

Radical has been making these cars for years. And to be fair, the SR3 SL isn't a brand new model - it came out several months ago. So why are we reporting on it, you ask? Because this is the first time we've actually seen a Radical - any Radical - up close and personal, this being the first time the company has displayed at a major international auto show outside the UK.

So check it out in our gallery of live images from the show floor of Frankfurt, and revel in the fact that while you probably wouldn't, you could, hypothetically, actually drive one of these on the road.
Radical SR3 SL races from track to street to show stand originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 14:39:00 EST.
The 2012 911 wasn't the only Porsche to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week. German tuner Techart unveiled its new GTStreet RS based on the 911 GT2 RS. The car features a variety of upgrades, from carbon fiber aerodynamic enhancements to a power upgrade package that boosts the output of the twin-turbo flat-six to 710 horsepower and 664 lb-ft torque. Techart says that the GTSTreet RS can reach 100 km/h (about 62 mph) from a standing start in just 3.3 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 218 mph. Additional upgrades are available as well, including lightweight 20-inch wheels and custom interior appointments.

You can read full details about the Techart GTStreet RS in the press release after the jump, or check out our gallery of photos straight from the show floor in the high-res gallery above.
Continue reading Techart GTStreet RS is the ultimate Smurf-colored Porsche 911

Techart GTStreet RS is the ultimate Smurf-colored Porsche 911 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 11:40:00 EST.
Volkswagen announced earlier this year that it would be entering the World Rally Championship starting in 2013 with the Polo R, and we got our first glimpse of the race car here in Frankfurt. While it's easy to see the similarities to the road version, the Polo R WRC has been transformed into an all-out rally car with widened fenders, a fully stripped and caged interior, and plenty of carbon fiber on the body. Under the hood is a race-prepped version of Volkswagen's 1.6-liter STI engine producing something in the range of 300 horsepower. 300 HP! This is a Polo, people.

Volkswagen is no stranger to rally racing, having won the 1986 Group A championship with a Golf GTI 16V and more recently finding success in the Australian and Finnish Rally Car Championships. VW also hopes to transfer some of the knowledge gained from competing in the Dakar Rally, which it has won the past three years.

We'll have to wait and see if the Polo R WRC finds similar success in motorsports, but with Volkswagen's backing, we wouldn't be surprised to see it on the podium soon enough. That won't be for a few years, though, so in the meantime, check out our photos of the car on display in Frankfurt.
Volkswagen Polo R WRC looks ready to tackle the tarmac originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 11:21:00 EST.
For those that think the Audi A8L W12 isn't luxurious enough, the German automaker debuted a limited edition model here in Frankfurt dubbed the "Exclusive Concept." The A8 follows the R8 and Q7 as models available under the Exclusive label.

Unlike the R8 program that allows buyers to customize their interior, Audi has already made the choice for you with the A8L W12. The car features a unique interior with Cognac-colored Poltrona Frau leather and inlays made from olive ash. Leather covers nearly every inch of the car including the dashboard, center console, and door trims. Even the car key is made from high quality cow hide. Audi says that it plans on producing the A8 L W12 Exclusive, although just fifty examples are slated to be built.

When Audi unveiled the original e-tron Concept at the last Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, a production version seemed to be nothing more than a glimmer in the very distant future. Two years later, it appears that the automaker has made plenty of progress in bringing an electric-powered R8 into the world.

Yesterday in Frankfurt, Audi revealed a new R8 e-tron "technology demonstrator" that represents something fairly similar to the production model we'll see in the near future. Some unique visual features separate the R8 e-tron from the petrol-powered version, including the carbon fiber vents on the hood and chrome slats in the front grilles and rear bumper. Like the concept, the production version of the car is expected to feature four electric motors sending power to each wheel, with performance targets including 0-60 mph in less than five seconds and a 150 mile range.

You can see the new Audi R8 e-tron prototype in detail in the high-res gallery above.
Audi shows off near-production R8 e-tron prototype originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 09:21:00 EST.
German Porsche tuning specialist Techart has released new renderings of some upcoming products including the GTStreet RS that will debut at this week's Frankfurt Motor Show, as well as their new individualization program for the 2012 Porsche 911 that will make its first appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

First up is the GTStreet RS, based on the potent Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Techart has fitted Porsche's flagship 911 with a multitude of modifications, ranging from aerodynamic upgrades to a new power kit that pushes the twin-turbo flat-six to around 720 horsepower and 664 lb-ft torque. Techart says that the GTStreet RS is capable of reaching 62 mph from a standing start in just 3.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 219 mph.

Still several months away is Techart's individualization program for the new Porsche 911. Porsche is only debuting the new 911 for the first time in Frankfurt this week, and Techart says that they will be the first to have an aftermarket program for the car. Various body components, interior upgrades and wheels in 20- and 21-inch sizes will be available. A 911 featuring Techart upgrades will be on display at the company's booth at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Follow the jump for full details on both the Techart GTStreet RS and the Techart 911.
Continue reading Techart previews new wares ahead of Frankfurt, Geneva

Techart previews new wares ahead of Frankfurt, Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 11:30:00 EST.
Omni Auto reports that Mercedes-Benz will debut the F 125! gullwing coupe concept seen here at this week's Frankfurt Motor Show.

According to Omni Auto, the F 125! concept showcases M-B's design direction for the 2025 CL-Class. It's unknown if the German automaker intends to make a production CL that's fueled by hydrogen, but if the German automaker does, then Omni Auto says its likely that the setup featured in the F 125! that will be used. In this case, that means four electric motors cranking out a combined 231 horsepower. That level of grunt allows the F 125! to hit a top speed of 137 miles and zip from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds. According to Omni Auto's leaked information, Benz says the F 125! consumes 0.79 kilograms of hydrogen per 100 kilometers and that the stylish coupe can travel up to 621 miles on a full tank.

As you can probably tell, the F 125! draws styling cues from the automaker's F800 Style concept, a four-door sedan that debuted at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. However, the prototype F 125! features a chassis made from a mix of carbon fiber, aluminum and plastics along with a unique carbon fiber tank to hold hydrogen at 700 bar. The gullwing's 10-kWh lithium-ion battery pack allows the 125 F! to travel approximately 31 miles before activation of the on-board fuel cell is required.

Look for us to post live shots and more details on the Mercedes-Benz F 125! concept when it debuts in Frankfurt, but for the moment, be sure to check out the image gallery to see the concept's trick slide-out trunk and stylized design.
Mercedes-Benz F125! gullwing fuel cell concept leaks ahead of Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 10:28:00 EST. Audi didn't release any additional information the on the Audi Urban Concept today, but it did let loose a <strike>photo</strike> rendering album of the e-tron-branded concept in coupe and roadster forms that we'll soon get to know in Frankfurt. Powered by two electric motors, the driver and passenger will get to their staggered seating positions through the tailgate, and can let the sun shine in through the sliding canopy once there if they're in the coupe.

We look forward to finding out if all this is as funky in person as it is in print. Until then, there's that bunch of photos to check out in the high-res gallery.
Audi Urban Concept rendered originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 11:28:00 EST.
Kia has its bags packed for Germany, because the automaker is reportedly planning to unveil a new concept car at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. According to Ward's Auto, Kia officials aren't calling it a coupe, but state the car will have "coupe-like" styling. Does that mean the Korean automaker is taking aim at the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and Audi A7? Judging by the styling direction of its latest vehicles - the Optima, namely - we wouldn't be surprised.

Mum's the word on this Kia concept, but the report suggests that it will have rear-wheel-drive architecture and slot in size between the Hyundai Genesis and Equus. Our best guess? This is further confirmation that the Kia K9 is getting ready to meet the world. The V8-powered, Peter Schreyer-designed four-door is expected to take the auto show stage in Germany, and we'll be there to bring you live photos if and when it does.

Besides word of a new model, Kia also has updates in store for its engines and transmissions. The 2.0-liter direct-injection four-cylinder unit making its way into the 2012 Soul is already being reworked. Engineers are squeezing more power while improving fuel efficiency thanks to a continuously variable valve timing system. Additionally, while automotive kissing cousin Hyundai is set to launch the Veloster with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, Kia insiders say more gears are already on the immediate horizon. A seven-speed DCT isn't far behind the six, with launch estimates pegged at two years time.
Kia confirms RWD "coupe-like" concept, powertrain updates originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 08:59:00 EST.
Lots of people have been waiting for this news: The production version of the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will make its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September.

Toyota says the Prius Plug-in is the next "major milestone" in the automaker's 40-year quest for sustainable mobility (so, what's the RAV4 EV, then?). The plug-in hybrid sedan features a newly designed, compact lithium-ion battery that enables the pluggy Prius to achieve a remarkably low fuel consumption rating of 2.2 liters per 100 kilometers (107 miles per gallon U.S.) and CO2 emissions of just 49 grams per kilometer.

While the Japanese automaker will continue to focus on hybrid vehicles without a plug, Toyota says the Plug-in Prius is its "flagship" that showcases the latest developments in hybrid-drive technology. It also says that the car's value and fuel-sipping abilities combine to make it the "ultimate eco car."

We'll bring you more details on the production version of the Prius Plug-in Hybrid when it takes the stage in Frankfurt.
Continue reading Production Toyota Prius Plug-in to debut at Frankfurt Motor Show

Production Toyota Prius Plug-in to debut at Frankfurt Motor Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 13:30:00 EST.
Following the official release of a handful of sketches and an unofficial reveal of the camo'd prototype, Audi has put out a brief teaser clip of its Urban Concept ahead of its official reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

We still don't have much in the way of details - and the video doesn't provide any new information - but what we do know is that the 1+1 EV is the next in a string of etron-branded concepts, with 21-inch wheels, two electric motors and a lithium-on battery pack. We'll have more in a few week's time, but until then... jump.
Continue reading Audi Urban Concept teased in motion [w/video]

Audi Urban Concept teased in motion [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 09:59:00 EST.
On this side of the ocean, we're used to our Hyundais having names like Accent and Elantra. But overseas the Korean automaker has an entirely separate range with names like i20 and i30. And Hyundai is preparing to unveil the latest of the latter at the rapidly approaching Frankfurt Motor Show.

Filling the slot in Hyundai's European line-up that's filled, more or less, by the Elantra in this side of the pond, the current i30 hatchback and wagon have been on the market since 2007, so their replacement is just about right on schedule. The new model has been developed from start to finish specifically for the European market at the company's European R&D facility in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and embraces the brand's fluid design language with its trademark hexagonal grille up front.

Little in the way of solid details have been announced on the new model to accompany the teaser rendering above, but you can expect it to pack a range of gasoline- and diesel-burning four-cylinder engines when it eventually reaches European showrooms. Also, could this hatchback i30 preview what's in store for North America's upcoming Elantra Touring? We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, follow the jump for the press release.
Continue reading Hyundai renders new i30 unto Frankfurt

Hyundai renders new i30 unto Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 10:59:00 EST.
Hot-hatch enthusiasts take note: the Suzuki Swift Sport is back.

Having updated the Swift range last year, Suzuki unveiled the rather tantalizing S-Concept in Geneva a few months back. What you see here may not be quite as extreme as the show car, but carries the salient points to the showroom. And if the previous-generation Swift Sport was anything to go by, it could become a new favorite among pocket rocket enthusiasts.

Set to be unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, the new Suzuki Swift Sport upgrades on the base hatchback with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine developed specifically for this model. It churns out a modest 134 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, but considering its diminutive dimensions, that ought to be enough to deliver a real punch.

That's mated to a six-speed manual transmission and supported by a performance-optimized suspension, all of which we hope to read more about in the near future. In the meantime, though, you can check out the press release after the jump and the solitary image released thus far in full resolution above.
Continue reading Suzuki previews new Swift Sport ahead of Frankfurt debut

Suzuki previews new Swift Sport ahead of Frankfurt debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 09:30:00 EST.
If you were smitten by the Subaru XV concept, Fuji Heavy Industries is ready to make your dreams a reality at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Influenced by the concept that debuted in Shanghai this April, the production version of Subaru's next generation crossover is set to land in European showrooms later this year. For those of us in the States, you'll know the XV as the Impreza Outback, although it's unclear if the Euro-XV will form the basis of the next Outback wagon or another variant of the Impreza. We'll know soon enough once we hit the floor in Germany. Check out the brief press blast after the jump.
Continue reading Subaru teases XV crossover ahead of Frankfurt

Subaru teases XV crossover ahead of Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 23:35:00 EST.
The Lamborghini Gallardo has been on the market now for the better part of a decade. Along the way, it has led to countless variants: some with roofs, some without, some with all-wheel drive, some with rear, some with as less than 500 horsepower and some with nearly 570. Soon the entire range will be replaced with a new model thought to be called Cabrera, but before it does, word on the strada is that the Raging Bull marque is planning one last hurrah.

And what a hurrah it will be. Reportedly based on the Super Trofeo race car that's fielded in the spec racing series of the same name, a "Super Trofeo Stradale" is tipped to debut at next month's Frankfurt show as the final iteration of the Gallardo.

Little word at this point on just what it will entail, but expect more power and less weight than any variant that has preceded it. For reference, the track-bound Super Trofeo packs a 562-horsepower V10 but with 240 pounds less heft than the standard Gallardo and 88 pounds less than the stripped-out Superleggera. Expect the roadgoing version to hit 60 miles per hour in three seconds flat and run out to a top end of some 210 mph.

We'll have to wait until we get to the Messe to find out more, but that's little over a month away, so stay tuned.
Lamborghini to present ultimate Gallardo at Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 19:27:00 EST. A day after spies caught Audi's latest concept prepping for a photoshoot in Berlin, Germany, the automaker has dropped the first round of details on its Frankfurt-bound prototype.

As suspected, the Audi Urban Concept is another in a string of etron-branded concepts that point towards an electrified future, but with a more city-friendly size and shape.

The body is comprised of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, with offset seating for two, a sliding canopy and a tailgate that serves as the main entry point. Motivation is provided by a pair of electric motors and a lithium-ion battery which Audi insists will deliver "sporty performance."

Beyond that, Audi isn't saying much in the press release below the fold - we'll have to wait for the Urban Concept's debut next month for the full details.
Continue reading Audi Urban Concept is a Frankfurt-bound 1+1

Audi Urban Concept is a Frankfurt-bound 1+1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 18:27:00 EST.
It's go time over at the Modena headquarters of Maserati. The automaker itself set the ambitious target of doubling its sales figures, but its corporate overlord Sergio Marchionne wants the brand to increase their sales tenfold. That's ambitious and then some, and in order to get there, the Trident marque is going to need some new product.

Fortunately, Maserati has just such plans in store. And we already know a bit about all of 'em. The Quattroporte will be replaced by two new sedans - one smaller and one larger than the current model - while a new SUV is set to join the lineup for the first time. What we didn't know is that the sport-ute is set, according to reports, for unveiling at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

The vehicle, based on the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee, will likely debut in concept form at first. So it might be a while before we find out whether it will carry Maserati's own V8 engine or something from the Chrysler parts bin, but we should have a good idea of what we're looking at when the concept is unveiled next week. Stay tuned.
Maserati to unveil Grand Cherokee-based SUV in Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 16:32:00 EST.
Lamborghini has begun sending out invitations this week for the debut of its new "super sports car" at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next month. While the Italian automaker has a number of projects in development, this "super sports car" is most likely a production version of the Sesto Elemento concept that debuted last year at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

We had already heard that if the Sesto Elemento were to reach production, it would be for track use only. The invitation sent out this week says "Lamborghini. Racing Towards Frankfurt," which suggests that the car debuting in Frankfurt also has a track connection. Put the two together and we suspect we'll be seeing the Sesto Elemento again in Germany next month, this time without the word 'concept' attached to its name.
Lamborghini teases new "super sports car" for Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 08:30:00 EST.
