If you're a blue-blooded American capitalist, there's nothing better than leading your company to the top of the Fortune 500 - except for making billions of dollars in profits, that is. But thankfully those two objectives tend to go hand-in-hand, as proven by these two men.

Indeed, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson and Ford CEO Alan Mulally have plenty to smile about when looking at the 2012 Fortune 500 list, as their respective companies are pegged at fifth and ninth. While Ford's profit last year dwarfed GM's, according to the Fortune list, GM's revenue was greater than all but four other corporations: Exxon Mobil, Wal-Mart, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips.

The only other automotive firm to hit the top 100 was supplier Johnson Controls at 67, though plenty of other suppliers made the list, including Goodyear at 126 and Ford spin-off Visteon at 321.
GM, Ford place in top 10 on 2012 Fortune 500 list originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 May 2012 15:59:00 EST.
By nearly all accounts, things are starting to look up at General Motors. The company has shed dead weight, cut down its debt and slimmed its dealer network in order to be a more healthy business, but those moves have officially knocked The General from the top 10 of Fortune Magazine's fabled 500 list. It's the first time in 101 years GM hasn't been one of the top 10 businesses on the list.

Fortune says that because of last year's bailout and massive plant closings and layoffs, the carmaker now holds the 15th slot among the heavy-hitters of the business world. Meanwhile, rival Ford has managed to hold onto its place among the top 10 corporations. The Blue Oval fell from seventh last year to eighth this year.
That didn't stop Wal-Mart from losing its grip on first place in the Fortune 500, though, as Exxon Mobil smoked all comers with $443 billion in sales last year. Exxon Mobil also topped all companies in profits last year, tallying a cool $45 billion in revenue.

Exxon Mobil's ascent to the top of the Fortune 500 comes as little surprise given the ridiculous rise of oil over the spring and summer of 2008. Oil rose from $60-$80 per barrel in 2007 to $147 per barrel in July, 2008. Even the surprising drop to under $40 per barrel in December didn't put a damper in Exxon Mobil's record year.

Exxon Mobil wasn't the only oil company to shine in 2008, as Chevron and ConocoPhillips moved up to third and fourth place. ConocoPhillips wasn't all smiles in 2008, though, as its over exposure to the money losing oil refineries resulted in $17 billion in losses last year. General Motors and Ford Motor Company finished sixth and seventh, respectively, on this year's list.

[Source: CNN Money]
Exxon Mobil topples Wal-Mart to sit atop Fortune 500 list originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Apr 2009 15:20:00 EST. The General had once stood strong atop the rankings, having fallen from the top spot in 2001 at which time Wal-Mart took over. For the last few years, Exxon-Mobil and the big box retailer have battled for the first two positions on the list with GM claiming third place. This year, soaring demands for energy have allowed Chevron to nudge past GM on its way to a third place finish. General Motors, at number four on the list, is bracketed by another energy company, ConocoPhillips, at number five. Ford finds itself sitting at number seven, the same as last year.

Fortune's 500 list is based on company revenue, not profit. If profit were the main criteria, GM and Ford wouldn't be making any appearances on the list at all. Exxon Mobil would easily claim the top spot as the most profitable company around with GM posting nearly as much in losses over the same period of time.

[Source: Fortune]
GM slips to number four on the Fortune 500 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Apr 2008 17:58:00 EST.
