It may be true that you need superhero levels of talent (not to mention some serious financial backing) to make it into Formula One, but that doesn't mean that F1 drivers are just born that way. They need to work their way up. And for many, that road starts with Formula Ford.

Ford has quite the racing pedigree, but usually, its racers are relegated to the track. Not the new Formula Ford EcoBoost, though. It's a turbocharged, open-wheeled racer complete with a 200-horsepower, 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine... and it's legal on the roads of the UK.

Formula Ford, as the name suggests, is a single-seat, open wheel race car powered by a (you guessed it) Ford powerplant. Powered by a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, the steel-tube chassis'd Formula Ford racer is a FIA-certified racecar built to run on tracks all over the world. The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox, which meters out the 158 horses and 162 pound-feet of torque.

After first announcing its plans to offer a new race engine for Formula Ford-type cars last summer, Honda Performance Development (HPD) has now begun to ship the new powerplants. HPD developed the 1.5-liter inline-four based on the production unit from the 2009 Fit. The engines will be eligible for use in the Sports Car Club of America's Formula F category.
