Things just got a lot more interesting for owners of the 2011 Ford Mustang. This weekend at the Woodward Dream Cruise, Ford Racing released its new supercharger package for the new 5.0-liter V8, turning the already potent pony car into a serious drag-strip contender.

The supercharger system is available in three packages, each utilizing a 2.3-liter Whipple twin-screw supercharger, air-to-liquid intercooler and 47 lb/hr fuel injectors. The base package provides 525 horsepower and 470 pound-feet torque and comes with a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty when installed by a Ford or Lincoln dealer, while the second kit offers 624 hp and 536 lb-ft torque... but no warranty. Finally, those that want to build their own custom system can opt for the tuner kit, which comes with only the core components but needs to be independently calibrated to work with the engine's computer. Hit the jump to see full details on both packages, and if you're the owners of a 2011 Mustang, you've got some decisions to make. Top tip, Panayiotis!

Thanks to an alert reader perusing the Ford Racing online parts catalog, we now know that both the new 5.0-liter "Coyote" V8 and the aluminum-block supercharged 5.4-liter V8 that power the 2011 Mustang GT and GT500 can be purchased in boxes.

The 412 horsepower, twin-cam 32-valve V8 comes fully dressed except for the air-conditioning compressor and alternator. That means it has compete fuel injection and ignition systems and all the manifolding and other bits. The other item that's not included is the wiring harness and powertrain control module which will set you back an extra $1,499 on top of the $6,999 for the engine.

For those with a hankering for even more grunt, the aluminum 5.4-liter also comes dressed for success with 550 hp and 510 pound-feet of torque. The cylinder bores of the new engine have been coated with a Plasma Transferred Wire Arc system to make them tougher than steel or iron with much lower weight. The blown engine is a good bit steeper - $20,999 - plus the harness and PCM. A tip of the hat to GT!

Ford Racing Mustang FR500S - Click above for high-res image gallery

It doesn't seem too long ago that Ford launched the "poor man's racer" FR500S Mustang and the Mustang Challenge Series at SEMA in 2007, and already it's coming to an end. The series announced that the September race at Miller Motorsports Park will be the last, although the FR500S will still be sanctioned for various other racing series.

No specific reason was given for the ending of the series, but our best guess is that it was due more to the slow economy than a lack of enthusiasm. Everyone involved, from the drivers to the sponsors to Ford all seem sad that the Mustang Challenge will be ending.

"We are disappointed to not continue what we started with the Mustang Challenge," said Series Director Lynda Randall. "But we should hold our heads high, as this was a tremendously successful program and we were fortunate to get to be a part of what really became a family." You can read more about the series over at Mustang Challenge.com, or you can click through the high-res gallery of the FR500S below.

2010 Hurst Ford Mustang Pace Car - Click above for high-res image gallery

Ford and Hurst have a long and illustrious history of working together to create special edition Mustangs, and the latest fruits of their labor can be seen in our high-res image gallery below. The 2010 Hurst Mustang Pace Car will make its first official appearance during the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge race that will be held at Virginia International Raceway on April 25, 2010.

There will only be one 2010 Hurst Mustang Pace Car, and it will make appearances at the Hot Rod Power Tour, a slew of Larry H. Miller dealerships and finally at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas before being auctioned off next January. Proceeds from the car's sale will benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. A hot Mustang convertible for a worthy cause... what's not to like?

Though you won't be able to march into your local Ford dealership and drive off in a new Hurst 'Stang, you will be able to get "promotional items" inspired by the car... including 'skins' for pinewood derby racers. Sadly, the miniature version won't be sporting the full-size car's polished 20-inch wheels, Hurst shifter or 550-horsepower supercharged V8 engine. What they will have in common, though, is the iconic black and gold Hurst color scheme. See below for images and click past the break for the press release.

A few days ago, Vaughn Gittin Jr. gave a sneak peak of his new 2011 Mustang and hinted that a new sponsor would be involved for the 2010 Formula Drift season. Judging by the green wheels and that the car's unveiling would be held at Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory in Los Angeles, it was an easy assumption that Monster Energy Drink would be involved. The company is most famous in the motorsports world for sponsoring Ken Block, and both Gittin Jr. and Formula Drift seem like an easy fit. Sure enough, when the wraps were pulled off the new livery featured Monster's green and black theme.

Like the production 2011 Mustang, Vaughn's new ride features several new upgrades. The chassis and suspension have been updated using the knowledge gained from the 2009 season, and the looks have been tweaked to match Gitton's ponycar for the street, the RTR-C Mustang. Falken Tire remains as a sponsor and has provided their brand new RT-615K tires to be sacrificed on track, and a version of Ford Racing's 4.6-liter supercharged V8 is still under the hood. So what will happen to the 2010 Falken Mustang? Justin Pawlak, who finished ninth last year with a Mazda RX-8 last year, is joining the Falken team and will take over Vaughn's old Mustang.

We were fortunate enough to receive an invite to the unveiling, and made sure to have cameras in hand. A dark, crowded warehouse isn't our favorite place to photograph a car, but we did the best we could and have put the resulting images in the high-res gallery below.

Ken Block/Ford Fiesta at the 2010 Rally America Sno*Drift - Click above for high-res image gallery

The initial motivation for this piece was a pre-Sno*Drift dinner with Ken Block and members of the new Monster World Rally Team last Thursday, followed the next day by a ride in the shotgun seat of Block's new Fiesta rally car. As for the ride along, we were anticipating some no-holds-barred, looking-through-the-side-windows-to-steer, make-the-media-guy-puke action, but as is so often the case with most things regarded as insanely fun, some last-minute rule interpretations ruled out the scheduled media rides.

Whether or not there was some friction between Ford's media efforts and the Rally America staff was unclear, but it was all moot anyway when the Fiesta's broken suspension bits took Block out of the action late Friday, after just seven stages. At least the dinner went off without a hitch, save for some discrepancy with the waitress on whether or not a chicken Caeser salad was actually ordered by yours truly. If you're confused right now, you're not alone.

UPDATE: Ford assures us there wasn't any friction between the Blue Oval and Rally America, at least outside the normal race day jitters experienced at any event such as this. According to Ford Racing, Rally America was "awesome to work with" and given the crazy-icy conditions for the event, we can understand both the extra concerns for safety and the need to keep the playing field leveled.

We did have a chance to noodle around inside Block's cranium for a couple hours though, and we learned he'll be headed to the Top Gear studios in April to film, among other things, an all-new Gymkhana session with the rally Fiesta. The new car is actually the same Fiesta Rallycross car that Marcus Gronholm piloted up Pikes Peak last year, though the 800 horsepower has been tuned back to something in the 330 range. We also learned the new car has a healthy torque advantage from his old ride, and as good as Subarus sound with a tight exhaust, the Fiesta has a delicious wail that sounds suspiciously like the WRC-spec Focus he'll be campaigning in Mexico next month.

Is he excited about driving in the World Rally Championship? Absolutely, but he also confessed to having virtually no seat time in the Focus thus far, which Block describes as "night and day" from the Fiesta. It would've been nice to see the Fiesta again on Saturday, or any sort of Monster World Rally Team presence for that fact, and there were certainly an abundance of fans who would agree. Instead, the Fiesta team packed up the broken car and headed south in the wee hours of the morning, leaving the rest of us with nothing but Red Bull to drink.

That is, until another Fiesta showed up...

Travis Pastrana has no shortage of critics who claim the daredevil is skating on thin ice. Okay, that was a terrible segue into this year's Sno*Drift, the opening event in the Rally America Championship series, but yes, Pastrana and co-driver Christian Edstrom did skate to a fourth straight Sno*Drift victory on Saturday, trumping the second place team of Antoine L'Estage and co-driver Nathalie Richard by more than a minute. Not too bad for a guy who just had surgery for a broken collar bone. Meanwhile, William Bacon and Peter Watt finished third overall as the highest-placing privateers. Ken Block, sporting his trademark goatee and a new Ford Fiesta rally car, retired after just seven stages due to suspension failure.

Organized around the snowy gravel roads of Northern Lower Michigan, Sno*Drift 2010 wasn't so much with the snow thanks to a warm spell and thorough soaking of rain, followed by a quick dip into sub-zero temperatures-all within a week of race day. Roads turned into rivers of glare ice, and since studded tires aren't allowed in the series, automotive hilarity reminiscent of Snoopy on Ice was the order of the day. Just ask Pastrana's team mate Dave Mirra, who crossed the final mark literally dragging his Subie's front bumper and headlights thanks to a late-stage disagreement between himself, Sir Issac Newton, and a tree.

More to come on Pastrana, Block, and Rally America; in the meantime spy the Rally America gallery while we search Wikipedia for frost bite remedies and tips on removing champagne from blue jeans.

Racers and project car builders have two fresh engine options to choose from in the Ford Racing parts catalog. Fans of the classic 302 cubic inch V8 and a lighter budget can opt for the 340 horsepower X302 crate engine. At $3,495, the X302 offers the classic cast iron block and aluminum cylinder heads mated with forged aluminum pistons and die cast aluminum valve covers.

Those in need of a bit more oomph can opt for the new 427 FE, based on the Boss 351 block with four-bolt main bearings carrying the forged steel crankshaft and rods. The block is topped with Ford Racing aluminum cylinder heads with 10.5:1 compression ratio, netting 535 hp and 545 lb-ft of torque and commanding $8,800. Both engines get the standard Ford Racing one year warranty. Press releases are after the jump.

In addition to the new 5.0 2011 Mustang GT, Ford's also selling a new Boss 302R race car. If you haven't been paying attention, Ford's previous generation FR500C racer has been racking up victory after victory. Besides winning a race two days after the first FR500C was sold (you buy 'em at a Ford parts counter), the FR500C then went on to win three Triple Crown championships in Koni competition as well as back-to-back driver's championships in FIA GT4 (featuring Corvettes, Caymans, Aston Martin V8s, etc). And the Boss 302R is better. Or potentially better...

Featuring a racing version of the new 5.0 32-valve Ti-VCT V8, a six-speed manual transmission, roll cage, race seats, five-point belts, data-acquisition equipment, racing shocks and springs as well as Brembo brakes and special tires. How much? $79,000. There's also a $129,000 Boss M-FR302R1 that's eligible to race in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series (formerly known as the Koni Challenge). It comes complete with a sealed, high-output motor, better cooling, close-ratio transmission, a seam-welded body, Koni dampers, upgraded ABS system, tuned exhaust and a special one-piece drive shaft.

Ford's only building fifty Boss 302Rs next year and they should be available in the third quarter. Anyone else feel like hitting the track? Full press release, after the jump.

Ford has named Jamie Allison as the new director of its North American Motorsports programs. Set to replace Brian Wolfe, Allison has been working in Ford Racing for six years and has been with the Dearborn automaker for 22 years. While part of the racing group, Allison has worked in one of the more profitable segments of the business, selling racing performance parts. During his tenure Allison oversaw the launch of Ford selling turn-key race cars like the FR500C, the FR500S and of course the Cobra Jet drag race car.

The race car program has been very successful both in terms of sales and on the track, with both the 2008 and 2010 runs of 50 Cobra Jets sold out before the cars were even built. The announcement of Allison's promotion came during a media event this week where Allison revealed the next product from Ford Racing, which you'll here more about next week. Wolfe has been named to a new position in the product development organization.

Ford Racing is continuing to launch its assault on all forms of motorsport with the upcoming launch of the 2010 Boss 302R Mustang to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original Boss 302's 1970 Trans-Am championship. No photos of the car have been released quite yet, but we do have plenty of information thanks to a leaked letter to Ford dealers. Like the FR500S, FR500C, FR500CJ and other Mustangs available from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog, the Boss 302R is for off-road use only and will be built in very limited quantities. Just 50 are planned for production at a starting cost of $79,000.

Two versions of the 302R will be available, with the base package designed to compete in various SCCA and NASA classes and the upgraded version built to Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series specifications. The base Boss 302R includes a 5.0-liter four-valve V8 pushing out an estimated 400 horsepower as well as a six-speed transmission, race-spec suspension, brakes and tires, and safety equipment including a roll cage and race seats with safety harnesses. The Grand-Am spec version also gets a sealed high-output race engine, seam-welded body, racing fuel cell, a data acquisition system and more for a cost of $129,000.

Ford Racing is currently taking orders, and judging by sales of their other competition Mustangs you will need to order immediately if you want to get your hands on one. Follow the jump for more information and detailed specifications of the 2010 Ford Racing Boss 302R.

Ford Mustang NASCAR Nationwide Car - Click above image to enlarge

Hold on to your butts, people. Ford Racing and Roush Fenway Racing have unveiled their new stock car based on the poniest of pony cars. Prior to this, Ford teams in NASCAR have driven Fusions. Well, all right, none of them were actual Fusions or will be actual Mustangs. Rather, they'll be normal stock cars like everyone else in NASCAR drives that are covered with enough stickers and fake grilles to make you think that you might be looking at a Mustang from the stands. Man, "stock car" has really become a contradiction in terms.

Now you won't see Mustangs turning left next week in Charlotte at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The new car will compete in four races next year and only in the Nationwide Series, not the Sprint Cup. As such, it won't be based on the Car of Tomorrow platform that the Sprint Cup series uses, but rather the newer, different Car of Tomorrow platform designed specifically for the Nationwide Series. This first new Mustang to race in the Nationwide Series will be the No. 16 Con-way Freight Mustang driven by Colin Braun for Roush Fenway Racing. Is it enough to make us love NASCAR? Not quite, but if we had to race a bathtub on wheels, we'd pick this one.

UPDATE: Sorry about image, fixed now.

As the only American automaker not recently put through a government-sponsored bankruptcy, it comes as little surprise that Ford has taken over the spot long held by General Motors as the Official Sponsor of the NHRA. The first sign of dissension in the ranks came earlier this year as GM's bankruptcy filing ended the contracts the automaker had previously forged with Cagnazzi Racing, KB Racing LLC, Kurt Racing and Pedregon Racing to provide cash, parts and support vehicles.

This new multiyear agreement between Ford and the NHRA means that for the foreseeable future, all official vehicles used by the racing organization will now carry the Blue Oval badge, including trackside safety vehicles. For its part, Ford seems pleased with its newly prominent role within the drag racing community. Brian Wolfe, Ford's North America Director of Motorsports, said in a statement:

We're very excited to be partnering with NHRA on this program. We see this as a very good business proposition in terms of being able to actively reach out at-track and online to the NHRA fan base in ways that we haven't been able to do in recent years. We'll be able to allow that fan base to see and experience some of our great new products at-track while also partnering with the successful Motorcraft and Quick Lane program to give fans a look at the total Ford ownership experience.

The current production manifold works very well with all kinds of engine modifications, but once the revs hit 6,500 rpm, it completely falls flat. The new manifold is designed to support a bump of that redline up to 7,500 rpm. The manifold doesn't really add much power on its own, but it does allow other mods like camshafts, valves and exhaust systems to take advantage of more engine speed.

Ford will be building tooling over the next few months and running production prototypes toward the end of summer. The manifold should be on sale later in the fall. Ford hasn't yet set pricing for the new manifold but it may come in at about $600-700. Mike Sutton from Car and Driver who drove a 2009 GT fitted with the new manifold said the engine easily revved beyond 7,000 rpm, something impossible with a stock modular V8.
Ford Racing to introduce new intake manifold for modular V8s originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 08:00:00 EST. Needless to say, we loved the track pack upgrades as we blasted through the canyons near Malibu. Unfortunately for early buyers of the 2010 'Stang, the Track Pack was a late availability option. Fortunately, buyers don't have to wait much longer as the Track Pack is slated to finally arrive this summer.

If there is one important lesson to be learned from the premium German automakers, it's that having lots of personalization options can be highly profitable. With that in mind, there are a seemingly infinite number of parts available from Ford Racing including both go-faster bits and visual accouterments. The gold 2010 that won the Ford Racing invitational this past weekend was equipped with a variety parts including a functional "shaker" hood scoop. Another offering from Ford Racing is the FR3 handling pack which includes an inch lower ride height, stiffer springs, stiffer sway bars and retuned dampers for $1,335. Thankfully, unlike most aftermarket parts, the official stuff from Ford Racing comes with a full warranty, and upgrades are also available for both V6 and GT models. Check out the official press release after the jump.

[Source: Ford]
Continue reading FR3 handling package and new Track Pack available for Ford Mustang

FR3 handling package and new Track Pack available for Ford Mustang originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Jun 2009 08:01:00 EST. As befitting a powerplant from the Blue Oval, this new block will be able to accommodate a range of classic displacements from 351 to 427 to 460 cubic inches.

Based on the architecture of the popular Windsor 351 but blessed with the more robust 2.75-inch main bearings of the old Cleveland block, Ford designed the new Boss 351 block with strength in mind through 4-bolt main caps, screw-in freeze plugs, splayed main bolts, siamese bores with engineered coolant cross-drilling, front cross-over lifter oiling, and diesel-grade iron with 41,000 psi tensile strength.

Unlike many engine blocks designed solely for racing, the new Boss 351 features a street-capable cooling design and is therefore just as suitable for vehicles intended for cruise night at the local hangout as it is for the drag strip. Its $1,999 suggested retail price isn't going to break the bank, either. Full press release after the jump.

Gallery: Ford Racing Boss 351 block

[Source: Ford Racing]
Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading Ford Racing introduces new Boss 351 engine block

Ford Racing introduces new Boss 351 engine block originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 13 Jun 2009 13:39:00 EST.
At today's third annual Ford Racing Invitational at Milan Dragway in Michigan, the automaker announced the availability of a new body-in-white based on the 2010 Mustang. The bare body shells will be available to racers looking to build Mustangs for all kinds of classes. Ford will start taking orders for the shells starting in mid-July and running through the fall. In order to avoid having to carry inventory, the shells will be built in batch in late fall and then delivered in December.

In addition, a variety of interior trim kits and wiring kits will be available to meet the needs of racers depending on the rules of the class they compete in. Ford is planning to offer the shells annually for at least the next several years based on the same schedule of orders in mid-year and deliveries in December.

Gallery: 2010 Mustang body-in-white

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.

[Source: Ford]
Ford to offer 2010 Mustang body-in-white for racers originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 16:57:00 EST.
At last year's SEMA show, Ford unveiled the latest Mustang to join the Ford Racing stable, the FR500CJ Cobra Jet. The purpose-built drag racer came standard with go-fast parts from the Ford Racing catalog, including a 400 horsepower version of the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 (de-tuned to meet specifications needed for NHRA's AA Stock class) and a drag-specific wheel and tire combination. The 2009 model was a success both with customers and on the track. Ford Racing sold the entire run of fifty cars in less than two weeks, and it won its very first race at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, CA back in February.

Building on that success, Ford Racing announced today that it will be building a 2010 version of the Cobra Jet, with production to begin during the fourth quarter with deliveries taking place in early 2010. The base price is expected to be less than $75,000, and once again production will be limited to just fifty units. Like the 2009 model, the 2010 Cobra Jet will be modified with all Ford Racing parts including the supercharged 5.4-liter V8 that is now rated at 425 horsepower. Perhaps the most exciting news is the availability of an optional 475 horsepower aluminum block motor that we dearly hope will somehow find its way into a production car. Follow the jump for the press release from Ford Racing, and look for more details and photos to come around SEMA in November.

Gallery: Ford Mustang FR500CJ Cobra Jet

[Source: Ford Racing]
Continue reading Ford Racing announces plans for 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet

Ford Racing announces plans for 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 10:00:00 EST.
Ford Racing FR500C Mustang - Click above for a high-res image gallery

The current NASCAR top speed record sits at 212.089 mph and was set by Bill Elliot at Talladega Superspeedway in a 1987 Ford Thunderbird. Brent Hajek apparently figures it's about time that 22-year-old record is topped. Next Wednesday, May 13th, Hajek will once again put Bill Elliot behind the wheel of a Ford at the famed Talladega oval in Alabama, only this time, the vehicle in question will be a Mustang FR500C modified to run on E85.

This particular Mustang Cobra Jet has already managed to clock a 252 mph top speed at the Salt Flats in Bonneville, so we can't imagine there will be any problem setting a new record. Of course, there's nothing environmentally friendly about lapping an oval track at high rates of speed for the fun of it. Still, if the record's going to be set, it might as well be in a Mustang burning ethanol. See the full press release after the break.

Gallery: Ford Racing FR500C and FR500GT

[Source: Ford]
Continue reading Hajek Motorsports attempts to topple 22-year-old NASCAR speed record in E85 Mustang

Hajek Motorsports attempts to topple 22-year-old NASCAR speed record in E85 Mustang originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 May 2009 17:30:00 EST.
According to this eBay seller, this is the only 1967 Ford Mustang ever fitted with a retractable hardtop. As we've never seen one before (or one wearing butterfly doors, for that matter), we'll give the auctioneer the benefit of the doubt.

In any case, this restomod 'Stang has been comprehensively reworked, including a new Ford Racing 302 crate motor, along with a new Tremec T5 gearbox, a fully reworked suspension and a set of four-wheel discs hiding out under the American Racing Torque Thrust II wheels.

Of the staffers we surveyed here at Autoblog, we're not crazy about the paint or the doors, but the retractable fiberglass top unit from Mustang Plus is something we can't help but find interesting, particularly if this conversion was done to a donor car that wasn't originally terribly collectible (non numbers-matching, etc.). Admittedly the lines of the top don't blend with the rest of the design as nicely as a stock hardtop's roofline does, but that's to be expected with conversions like this. Besides, both the engine bay and the underbody are incredibly sanitary - certainly cleaner than they were the day this 'Stang rolled off the assembly line.

The seller says that the droptop conversion is something of an homage to a concept Mustang model that Ford originally considered building back in 1967. According to the listing, the Blue Oval invested some $250,000 in exploring the concept, only for it to get nixed by Henry Ford II because it couldn't be motorized. A quarter century later, retired Ford designer Ben J. Smith apparently devised the system seen here.
