The Detroit Free Press reports Ford is set to boost production by 40,000 units. The company plans to half its summer shutdown to just one week at 13 plants this July. Ford says that it is already operating most of its facilities at maximum capacity, and adding a week of production is a good way to balance manufacturing with demand. The automaker is also adding extra shifts at three of its production facilities this month. Overall, Ford will increase its production this year by a whopping 400,000 units to three million vehicles by October.

But Ford isn't the only domestic manufacturer to step up production. Chrysler is also skipping the summer shutdown at four of its plants and idling two more for one week instead of two. General Motors, meanwhile, will continue its summer plant stops as planned.
Ford to boost production by 40,000 units, shorten summer plant shutdown originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2012 09:39:00 EST. According to reports, it is normal for the plant to be closed for the week of Christmas, but an additional three weeks of downtime is necessary to "align production with demand."

The plant had initially been scheduled to be shuttered sometime in 2008, but the recent upwards trend in small pickup sales prompted the Blue Oval to keep it open a bit longer and it currently has no specific date set for closure, though it's demise is currently rumored for sometime in 2011. Perhaps if Ford would actually do something to update its long-in-the-tooth Ranger truck, it wouldn't need to consider its death at all, but that's another story entirely.

[Source: Reuters]
St. Paul Ford Ranger plant to shut down for December originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Oct 2008 08:30:00 EST. In exchange, the UAW was to give Ford competitive worker agreements at the plant so that cost-competitive cars could be produced there. Ford Americas President Mark Fields, however, pointed out the plan is not dead, just idled.

"We're still working through the business cases," Fields told DetNews. "still looking at the product plan and looking at how we're going to leverage more of our global resources. There's lots of moving parts."

Jim Hall of AutoPacific told the newspaper, "I think they want to wait until they've nailed down the new bargaining agreement next fall."

[Source: The Detroit News]
Ford puts plant plans in park originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Dec 2006 10:04:00 EST.
