I was more than a year removed from my last experience with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang/">Mustang GT</a> and its delicious <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/coyote+v8/">5.0 V8</a> when this new 2014 example rolled up to my driveway recently. Good weather and a planned road trip across the state meant that I would get plenty of seat time in this conservatively specified example, too. In total, I logged about 400 miles in a week of driving - not a lot for some of you super commuters out there, but quite a lot for this work-from-home journalist.<br />
<br />
The basic formula of the 5.0 has stayed the same for 2014. The 2013 model year saw a number of updates to keep the Mustang fresh until it's replaced with an all-new generation for 2015. So, for its bon voyage tour, the fifth-generation Pony Car has seen only a few modifications: a couple of new paint colors (Oxford White and Ruby Red Metallic), trim and wheel revisions and, sadly, the deletion of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang+boss+302/">Boss 302</a> from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> lineup. However, while the limited-edition Boss is likely to reappear sometime after the gen-six Mustang makes its debut in 2015, the GT Track Package cars like the one I tested provide at least a partial solution for those looking for hot laps.<br />
<br />
 <strong>Driving Notes</strong>

<ul>
	<li>The 5.0 V8 never gets old. 420 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque are delivered with satisfying linearity, as the Coyote motor spins up to redline far quicker than you'd expect for an engine of this displacement. Sonically rich, with just a hint of a hard edge to the exhaust over 5,000 rpm and a satisfyingly lazy rumble at idle, the soundtrack is pure enthusiast driving pleasure at most speeds. Oh yeah... on the first day I had the car I was reminded that the 5.0 Mustang is fast as all hell, too. Don't let its ubiquity fool you, this is a serious performance machine.</li>
	<li>The six-speed manual trans is quite substantial, with a positive, metallic click heard when shifting through the range. The gates are nicely spaced and the throws short. I generally enjoy using this beefy gearbox, though when trying for really fast changes - especially downshifts - a lighter, more accurate action would be appreciated. Clutch action is pretty low effort and progressive, and with so much torque that it's simple to get the GT moving - gently or in a cloud of smoke as your taste and situation dictate.</li>
	<li>As I mentioned, the Mustang I drove was equipped with Ford's excellent GT Track Package. For $2,450, the track pack feels like an excellent value for weekend racers or drivers that might want to upgrade their GT substantially down the road. The options group contains a little bit of what made the Boss 302 cool, in a Bossless model year. (<em>Automobile</em> web editor Evan McCausland quipped to me that the test car I had was, "more of an assistant manager" than a Boss, which is about right.) The most noticeable equipment you'll get if you spec your Stang this way are the larger <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/brembo/">Brembo brakes</a> and the Torsen helical diff with its more aggressive 3.73:1 rear axle. In a week filled with random quick corners and side-trips to back roads, I can attest that all make the GT feel a lot more sports car-like than less-endowed base GTs. For actual track work, the package's upgraded radiator (from the Boss 302) and engine oil cooler should help keep internals cool, as well.</li>
	<li>Not part of the track pack, my car also had optional ($1,595) <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/recaro/">Recaro</a> cloth racing seats. A far cry from the fully stuffed leather chairs I'm used to seeing in media-fleet Mustangs, I ended up falling in love with these Recaros. The fabric they're trimmed with is simple without looking downmarket, and the bolsters help them grip the driver firmly without squeezing too hard at the hips. Even my XL frame was a good fit. I'll admit that after about 150 miles, I was feeling the frame dig into my thighs a little bit - these probably aren't the best road trip seats - but for everyday driving or canyon road bombing, they're superb.</li>
	<li>On that same road trip, I should mention that I had no trouble hitting the EPA-estimated 26 miles per gallon on the highway... if I set the cruise right around 70 miles per hour. At a more normal (for me) 75 or 80 mph, the econ drops to about 21 on the interstate. In town I was seeing roughly 11 mpg, though admittedly I was keeping the revs high quite a lot to better hear the exhaust. I think the 17 mph city estimate is doable, if you're willing to blandly shift up into fourth a lot.</li>
	<li>Outside of the great seats, this interior is starting to feel pretty dated. With no navigation screen especially, there's no end to the gray and black plastic you seen in front of you. Accessing <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/+sync/">SYNC</a> via the standard radio's buttons and knobs is an atrocious way to navigate your digitally stored music, and the voice commands feel utterly unwieldy compared to newer systems like <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/cadillac+cue/">Cadillac CUE</a>. (Dan Roth's, Chris Paukert's and<em> Consumer Reports</em>' protestations to the contrary, CUE feels positively visionary after a week with this low-end, touchscreen-less SYNC.) Both iPhones and iPods were randomly spurned as "not recognized" devices; even after working the time before. And even when I could get my music to play, the sound system managed to sound both underpowered and badly voiced. It's a good thing the V8 soundtrack doesn't get old.</li>

Most available choices at your local car rental agency are tame appliances built to shuttle you from Meeting A to Hotel B. Back in the day, however, things were a bit different thanks to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/shelby">Shelby</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/hertz">Hertz</a>. In 1966, the rental car company and Carroll Shelby partnered up to offer a custom Ford Mustang. Shelby built 1,000 units, Hertz rented them out and a horde of happy customers used them to rip up their local dragstrips and main streets. In 2007, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/01/ford-unveils-shelby-gt-h-convertible-001-sells-at-barrett-jack/">the duo joined again joined forces</a> to supply some muscle into the rental fleet. Now comes word that Shelby is looking to celebrate its 50th anniversary with an all-new rent-a-racer.<br />
<br />
According to <em>Automotive News</em>, Shelby plans to team up with Hertz to bring a new generation of the Mustang GT-H into the world. Starting with a 412-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang GT</a>, Shelby will reportedly take the two-door and juice it up a notch before applying gold stripes to either a black car or a white one. The crew over at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/inside+line">Inside Line</a> has manged to put together a test that any auto enthusiast should be eager to read about. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford's</a> entire lineup of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustangs</a> has something unique to offer, and IL wrangled up one of each different 'Stang on offer: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+mustang+V6">V6</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+mustang+GT">GT</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+mustang+boss+302">Boss 302 Laguna Seca</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+mustang+shelby+gt500">Shelby GT500</a>. In the end, there can be only one...<br />

All four cars were flogged on a pair of tracks, including the 1.6-mile loop at Streets of Willow. The finishing order based on lap times was predictable, but the numbers are impressive across the board. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/shelby/">Shelby American</a> has finally released the specs on its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gt350/">2011 Shelby GT350</a>. Starting with a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/29/2011-ford-mustang-gt-first-drive/">2011 Ford Mustang GT</a>, Shelby utilizes <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford's</a> 5.0-liter V8 engine but ups the ante a bit. The base GT350 is rated at 430 horsepower (the stock GT musters 412 hp). On the standard GT350, a Whipple supercharger can be added to boost power output to 525 hp - enough to propel the modified Mustang from 0-60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds. If that's not enough, the R tune version produces a monstrous 624 horses.<br />
<br />
All 2011 Shelby GT350s are fitted with a long list of performance-aiding parts which include upgrades to the brakes, suspension and tires. As you can see above, they also wear unique Shelby aero and trim bits, a GT350 45th anniversary badge and a serialized Shelby GT350 dash plate.<br />
<br />
Pricing for the naturally-aspirated Shelby GT350 conversion is set at $26,995 and the base <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/supercharged">supercharged</a> car runs $33,995. Due to the 99-pony jump with the R tune, you would expect that package to cost close to $40,000, but it doesn't. It's just 750 bucks over the price of the standard supercharged kit. All of these prices, however, fail to include the cost of the donor Mustang GT. Perhaps the biggest news to come out of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monterey+2010/">this year's Monterey action</a> is the revival of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/13/ford-mustang-boss-302-is-back-for-2012/">Mustang Boss 302</a> for 2012. It's a hardcore version of the already well-liked <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang GT</a> - the hot new 5.0-liter V8 has been given more power, and performance mods like an upgraded clutch, adjustable suspension, short-throw shifter and improved brakes are all on hand, as is an even more exclusive Laguna Seca model.<br />

We've now spent a good deal of time fawning over the official photos of Ford's new Boss, as well as a set of live photos shot by our own Drew Phillips. However, Ford has just released another smattering of high-res shots showing the track-storming Boss models in all their glory. All of you who have been anxiously <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/13/mustang-stock-car-unveiled-for-nascar-nationwide-series/">awaiting the debut</a> of the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> in what we loosely refer to as modern-day stock car racing, take note: The original Pony Car will see its first action this Friday night at the Subway Jalapeno 250 at Daytona International Speedway.<br />
<br />
To help build excitement for the Mustang's entrance into the Nationwide Series, Ford has just announced that it will offer a brand-new 2011 Mustang GT - powered by the excellent 5.0-liter V8, no less - to anyone that wins the race... provided they do so in a Ford-branded race car, of course.<br />
<br />
For what it's worth, Friday's event will be the second straight race where a new 2011 Ford Mustang GT will serve as the pace car. In other words, those in attendance for the festivities would be witnesses to an All Mustang, All The Time Show if it weren't for the fact that Dodge will also be showing up with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/31/dodge-challenger-nascar-nationwide-racer-unveiled/">its new Challenger-based entry</a>. 'Stang vs. Challenger? Sounds like fun.<br />

It was only a matter of time before <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/05/09/jay-lenos-garage-doors/">Jay Leno</a> got his hands on the new 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> GT. It's no secret that the guy is a fan of Detroit ponies - he owns a minty 1965 Shelby GT350 that he claims is one of his favorite cars to drive. Now it looks like he's added the newest generation 5.0 to the flock. As you might expect, he's been so kind as to share his impressions with the interwebs via an episode of <em>Jay Leno's Garage</em>.<br />

You might be surprised to hear what the comedian has to say about the car. On more than one occasion, he compares the new Mustang to high-end metal from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. At this point, we know all there is to know about the 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a>. The fact that the all-new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/28/deep-dive-fords-all-new-5-0-v8/">5.0-liter V8</a> delivers a heady 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque is scrawled on our collective consciousness for good. Alright, fan boys (and girls), prepare for battle. The ever keen-eyed Sam Smith over at <em>Jalopnik</em> has spied an interesting phenomenon in the car universe. The new 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Ford Mustang</a> GT performance figures are within spitting distance of the mighty 2010 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/m3">BMW M3</a>. The Bavarian bruiser produces 414 horsepower out of its milky-smooth 4.0-liter V8 and hits the scales at 3,652 lbs. Meanwhile, the 5.0-liter Mustang serves up two less horsepower, but weighs 40 pounds less, too.<br />
<br />
At this point, odds are your blood is pumping no matter which side of the ring you happen to find yourself on. Stats that close yield frighteningly similar numbers when the two cars hit the track, too. The M3 can clip off the 0-60 dash in 4.3 seconds. The Mustang can do it in 4.4. Quarter mile? Deadlocked at 12.7 seconds at 111.3 mph.<br />
<br />
It's true, a quarter mile doth not a sports car make, which is why these next figures are so important. While the M3 can come down from 60 mph in 105 feet, the Mustang can do the same in 104. And here's the real shocker: Both cars hold onto the skidpad at .97 g. Now, before the comments go superfly TNT, it's worth noting that the as-tested <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> will set you back an eye-widening $28,180 more than the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a>. We could think of a thing or two to do with an extra 30-large. <br />
<br />

Well, this certainly didn't take long. Only a few weeks after <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> let the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">2011 Mustang GT</a> loose on the road, the boys at <em>Motor Trend</em> have done what we've all been waiting for, putting the new 5.0-liter V8 model up against the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Chevrolet Camaro SS</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/dodge/challenger">Dodge Challenger SRT8</a> in a head-to-head muscle car throwdown. In our <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/29/2011-ford-mustang-gt-first-drive/">first drive</a>, we were very impressed with the new GT's antics, and apparently, we aren't the only ones. Sorry, Camaro and Challenger - the Mustang takes top honors in this comparison. <br />
<br />
<em>Motor Trend</em> points out that, at the end of the day, the Mustang 5.0 is the closest representation of what a modern day muscle car should be. It stands true to the original concept of a lightweight coupe with a nimble body and chassis that's stocked to the brim with rumbling V8 power, and they say that there's no doubt that it's dynamically better than the Chevy and Dodge. What's more, the interior offers better tech and refinement - something that's key in the year 2010. <em> </em>The reborn <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS</a> is the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/18/review-2010-ford-mustang-gt/">2010 Ford Mustang GT's</a> most obvious competitor (obviously). While the Camaro is certainly a head turner, it's just not that great of an all around performance car. However, despite the 2010 Mustang GT coming out on top in many comparisons against its crosstown rival, one fact is undeniable: When it comes to power, the Camaro SS kicked the Mustang GT's butt up and down the block. Across the drag strip, too. The 6.2-liter LS3-equipped SS (manual only, as automatic Camaros get the weaker L99 motor) produces a screaming 426 horsepower and 420 rumbling pound-feet of torque, enough mojo to embarrass the 2010 Mustang GT's relatively wimpy 4.6-liter V8 with its 315 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. True, the Mustang handled better, rode better, had a <em>much</em> better interior and cost less, but at the end of the day we're talking muscle cars. Gumption matters. Chevy was king. Ford had to act.<br />

And act it did. Meet the 2011 Ford Mustang GT, or as everyone is already calling it, the 5.0. That's right, Ford is offering enthusiasts an honest to goodness 5.0-liter V8 (302 cubic inches, baby! Check out our <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/28/deep-dive-fords-all-new-5-0-v8/">Deep Dive</a> for all the technical mumbo jumbo) in the 2011 Mustang GT. As we're sure you know by now, thanks to some fancy breathing, the all new small-block produces 412 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. That's less than the Camaro, sure, but remember that the Mustang is lighter than the Chevy by a good 300 pounds. Besides, it's looking like Ford has decided to <a href="http://wot.motortrend.com/6659607/auto-news/mustang-power-we-dyno-the-2011-ford-mustang-50-v-8-and-37-v-6/index.html">underrate the 5.0's output</a> by about 30 ponies for who knows what reason. Meaning that while Ford might be using invisible ink, the Mustang's got the Camaro beat on paper. But what about in the real world? Make the jump to find out.<br />

Though driving impressions of the new 5.0-liter <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/16/2011-ford-mustang-gt-rocks-out-with-412-horsepower-26-mpg-highw/">2011 Ford Mustang GT</a> are off limits for now, <a href="http://blogs.popularhotrodding.com/6658872/hard-driving/2011-mustang-50/index.html"><em>Popular Hot Rodding</em></a> notes that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> made no mention of releasing pure facts. It's all about the numbers anyway, right? During last week's media launch for the new Mustangs in California, the showdown between the (<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/25/video-inside-line-dynos-the-2011-ford-mustang-gt-5-0/">supposedly</a>) 412-horsepower 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 and the 426-horsepower  <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/01/review-2010-chevrolet-camaro-ss-demands-to-be-loved/">2010 Camaro SS</a> got underway at a sectioned-off portion of the Camarillo Airport. An eighth-mile drag strip lay ahead of the two ponycars, both equipped with six-speed automatics.<br />
<br />
With time-slips in hand, the numbers don't lie. <em>Popular Hot Rodding</em> managed a time of 8.82 seconds at 83 miles per hour in the Camaro, but the Mustang proved to be even faster at 8.62 seconds at 86 mph. Virtually all journalists on hand recorded better times in the Mustang. Crude translations to quarter mile numbers come in at 13.8 seconds for the Camaro and 13.5 seconds for the Stang.<br />
<br />
With a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/25/2011-mustang-prices-beat-chevy-camaro/">base price coming in at $30,495</a> and numbers that - for now, at least - appear to  beat the competition, Ford looks like it has a serious hit in the making with its new 5.0 Mustang. How the renewed rivalry translates from the streets to the sales sheets, where the Camaro currently rules the roost, will be interesting to watch.<br />

Right now our man Jonny Lieberman is bombing around Southern California in both the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/16/2011-ford-mustang-gt-rocks-out-with-412-horsepower-26-mpg-highw/">2011 Ford Mustang GT</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/04/2011-ford-mustang-v6-rated-31-mpg-highway-most-efficient-300-h/">Mustang V6</a>. Both cars have received major mechanical upgrades for model year 2011 in the form of two new engines: The return of the fabled 5.0-liter V8 for the GT and a new 3.7-liter V6 for the base model. <br />

Jonny's not allowed to talk about his experience behind the wheel of either car until early next week, but that won't stop us from giving you a sneak preview of the Mustang V6 and its upgraded motor. The 3.7-liter V6 has already been used in such everyday fare as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mazda/cx-9">Mazda CX-9</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/infiniti/mks">Lincoln MKS</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/infiniti/mkt">MKT</a>. It's also destined for duty in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/edge">2011 Ford Edge</a>. The 2011 Mustang V6, however, will give this work-a-day engine an opportunity to shine.<br />
<br />
Producing 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, the Mustang's version of the 3.7-liter V6 will be the most powerful available. Paired with a six-speed automatic, it will also make for the most fuel-efficient muscle car on the market with a highway rating of 31 mpg. But we're not interested in fuel economy today. We're interested in evidence of how much better the new V6 model will be compared to the current one, which has used the 210-horsepower "Cologne" 4.0-liter V6 since 2005. We think the image above is all the evidence we need. While Ford might not be pulling out all the stops here in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Detroit-Motor-Show/">Detroit</a> to promote its updated <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> like it did for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/2010+ford+mustang/">2010 model year</a>, the 2011 model's improvements are just as significant, if not more. The new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/30/2011-ford-mustang-v6-la-2009-preview/">305 horsepower, 30 mile per gallon V6</a> debuted at Los Angeles back in December, and the long-awaited 5.0L V8 made its official debut here at the NAIAS. Fortunately, there's plenty more to the legendary 5.0 badge than an increase in displacement, and a cutaway motor on the show floor gave us a closer look at all the details.<br />
<br />
For starters, the new V8 uses a different bore and stroke to give it an even five liters of displacement, last employed in the Mustang GT in 1995. A larger, single-blade throttle body that replaces the dual unit now works in conjunction with a composite intake manifold runner to provide for better breathing, as do the all-new aluminum cylinder heads that include an extra exhaust valve for a total of four valves per cylinder.<br />
<br />
Additional upgraded components include a forged steel crankshaft, stronger forged powder metal connecting rods, high compression pistons, and a fantastic set of tubular stainless steel exhaust headers on each side. Perhaps most importantly, the 5.0-liter V8 receives Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT), a technology that allows for optimal power or fuel economy depending on throttle input. <br /> It has been a long, long time since we've watched <em>The Price is Right</em> - let alone on a regular basis, but there was a time when 11:00am was Bob Barker time. Barker has, of course, been replaced by comedian Drew Carey, but the game show hasn't changed much for the most part, and still rocks the most when either Plinko is being played or the showcase involves a new car.<br /> <br /> That's good news for Taylor, a 19-year-old who celebrated his birthday on the show last year. Taylor had what could only be called one of the luckiest days in show history (at least to auto enthusiasts), winning <em>two</em> rear-wheel-drive cars, a scooter, a trip to Boston and a boatload of money. Let's just call today - December 28, 2009 - Mustang 5.0 Day and be done with it, okay? We've seen lots of pictures and even more information about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/28/2011-ford-mustang-gt-offcially-rolls-with-a-5-0-v8/">2011 Ford Mustang GT</a> and it's bad to its baffled sump <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/28/2011-ford-mustang-gt-offcially-rolls-with-a-5-0-v8/">5.0-liter 32-valve V8</a>. But that's just a bunch of static information. The kids today, they demand <em>action</em>! After all, what good are "teh Internets" without video? Especially Mustang 5.0 video?<br />
<br />
That's precisely what the good folks at Ford have provided for our consumption/enjoyment. Warning: this is not <em>Top Gear</em>. The video you are about to watch is typical OEM B-roll. Meaning no tires will be smoked, no apexes clipped, no music will be thumped. All you'll see is the new 2011 Mustang GT with the Track Pack (notice the strut brace and Brembos) driving around. And then parked. So while it's not the most exciting video in the history of the world, it is the very first of the new Mustang strutting its stuff. <br />

Now, as a bonus, we're also throwing in some footage of the new 5.0 V8 on a dynometer. We already know the power ratings (412 horsepower @ 6,500 RPM, 390 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM), but in the video, we get to see the motor race almost all the way up to its 7,000 RPM redline. And, because we are who we are, we're tossing in one more bonus video to make you smile. Hey, it's the holidays. Meet the world's worst kept secret, the 2011 Mustang GT. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/25/2011-ford-mustang-gt-and-5-0-liter-v8-unwrapped-early/">comical embargo breaking</a> is now at its end and we're ready to present you with everything you've been aching to know about the new five-point-oh. Actually, it's probably <em>more</em> than you want to know. But we're sure you'll deal. So here we go...<br />

As you've undoubtedly noticed, those are honest to goodness "5.0" badges affixed to the 2011 Mustang's fenders. Not only are residents of A1A Beach Front Avenue stoked, but Mustang fans everywhere are finally getting their 302 back. That's right, the new 5.0 is just like the old 5.0 -- 302 cubic inches or 4.9-liters or 4,951cc. But we think the gumption this baddie stonks up will allow even the most pedantic amongst you to forgive the missing 49 cubic centimeters.

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-ford-mustang-gt-leaked-images/#3"><img hspace="0" height="201" width="300" vspace="4" align="right" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/12/2011-mustang-5.0_opt.jpg" class="right border" alt="" /></a>Thanks to some <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/18/i-autoweek-i-spills-more-beans-on-the-2011-ford-mustangs-5-0/">embargo breaking</a> that's already occurred, we've known for a week that the 2011 Ford Mustang GT would pack a brand new 5.0-liter V8 producing 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. We thought those tidbits might hold over the internet 'till the official embargo date lifts early next week, but we were wrong and therefore are still awake at 1:30 AM on Christmas morning writing this post. Thanks to Jalopnik via MustangHeaven via BurlappCars, we have the first images of the 2011 Mustang GT and its new 5.0-liter V8. <br />

You can read more about some of the engine's details that have already leaked <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/18/i-autoweek-i-spills-more-beans-on-the-2011-ford-mustangs-5-0/">here</a>, but let's just take a look see at what we've got. Kudos to Ford for leaving the engine's tippy top unadorned and we also dig those 5.0 badges on the engine and fenders. Nostalgia FTW - OMG! An old fat guy with a sack of stuff just crawled out of my fire place! I think he's a burglar. Gotta go hide the silver, Merry Christmas!<br />

<em>AutoWeek</em> has decided to let the cat get just a little bit further out of the bag this morning following last night's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/17/2011-ford-mustang-gt-to-offer-412-horsepower-5-0l-v8/">first bit of embargo breakage</a> regarding the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and its <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUkD4CY7YAQ">5.0-liter V8 engine</a>. So, by now you've heard that the new powerplant puts out 412 ponies, or 83 horsepower-per-liter. Now, AW wants you to know it also offers up 390 pound-feet of torque and that peak power comes at a screaming 6,500 RPM.<br />
<br />
The new powertrain combination will also return 25 miles per gallon, says AW. How does it manage this feat? With an aluminum engine block with cast cylinder sleeves and brand-new heads with four valves per cylinder, vertical intake ports and twin independent variable valve timing. Don't forget the tuned exhaust headers, a forged steel crankshaft with four-bolt main bearings plus new pistons and connecting rods.<br />

And what about the transmission? Your choice of either the 6R80 automatic transmission or the MT82 six-speed manual. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled programming... until the next bit of embargo breakage, of course.<br />
