Smart Fortwo gets the deluxe treatment from Boxfresh

Hard as it might seem to believe from its decidedly more spartan packaging, the Smart ForTwo is made by the same people responsible for the Maybach limousine and countless Mercedes-Benz luxury automobiles. But as seems to be the craze these days, the Daimler city car division has teamed up with a British clothing label called Boxfresh for a substantially more luxurious version.

The special one-off starts with a Brabus-spec cabrio, packing 31 more horsepower than standard for 101 - not exactly earth-shattering output numbers here, but a lot for such a tiny car. Boxfresh has resprayed it in what looks like a matte gunmetal finish; the interior is swathed in a rather sumptuous-looking tan leather. A heavy twill canvas folding roof tops it all off.

As you can see from the many artful close-ups in our image gallery, the attention to detail looks immaculate. We dare not ask how much such a trim job cost. This is, after all, a one-off for the time being, with the commercially-available product of their collaboration set to be announced later this year.

One way or another, it's not likely to make the jump Stateside - we just hope this isn't what Brabus was hiding under the tarp in that video from last week.

Sure it's €45,900, but what better commuter companion could you have if you want to keep your BRABUS Bullit within the safe confines of your garage? BRABUS smart fortwo cabrio-based Ultimate 112 lives up to its lofty moniker with 112 metric horses (110 HP) sending power to 18-inch rollers, controlled by the standard flappy paddle gearbox. Upping the available grip of the tangerine city schlepper are a set of BRABUS coilovers, with 235/35 R 18 high-performance tires out back and 205s keeping things sticky in front.

SMART prices fortwo at $12k, coming in January

The money-losing SMART brand hits US streets in January, and the price is much lower than many of us expected. A mere $11,590 will get you into the base "pure" fortwo, but it won't even get you a radio. For another $2,000, the "passion" fortwo also comes equipped with alloy wheels, a panorama roof (on a two-seater), AM/FM/CD player, power windows, and power mirrors. If you get the most pleasure driving a car with the top down, you can drop $16,590 on a passion cabrio. The drop-top fortwo comes with a power-fold soft top and a premium sound system.

The SMART will not only deliver killer fuel economy, but it will also cost less than most small cars on the market. The European subcompact can be fun to drive, too, since you can lessen your carbon footprint and play 'dodge the SUVs that can't even see you' at the same time. We don't understand, however, how any automaker would want or need to fore-go the radio on any model, no matter how base it is. Is the money saved even worth the aggravation of those left without tunes?
