Well, we've been covering the story of Chip Foose's Foose Coupe since before SEMA, and it all finally culminated over the weekend at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach, where the first customer car brought $300,000 when the gavel fell. That would ultimately be the top sale recorded over the weekend. The winning bidder gets to work directly with Foose to pick out the color schemes, wheel design, and in this particular case, even the motor -- either a Ford GT unit or the 392 HEMI crate engine as seen in the green prototype. Only 50 cars will be built, and the top bidder actually scored a little bit of a deal. You see, each Foose Coupe has a base price of $295,000 anyway, so the extra one-on-one personalization experience with Chip only added an additional $5,000 to the price for the first-ever customer car. Expectations were surely higher, so even though this was the top seller, dollarwise, the number it brought must have been a disappointment. You can watch the auction itself after the jump.

If you're interested in being the first person to lay hands on the new Foose Coupe, you'll want to make sure you're ready when Barrett-Jackson's Palm Beach shindig goes down later this month. The rights to the first car being sold to the public will be auctioned off to one of BJ's seemingly endless supply of deep-pockets bidders, and once the paperwork's all straightened out, the winner will be given the opportunity to meet with Chip Foose himself to select the car's color, interior, and the like.

The Foose Coupe, first shown at SEMA '06 as the "Hemisfear," is a carbon-fiber-bodied hot rod powered by a mid-mounted 392 HEMI crate motor dishing out 550 horsepower. Only 50 will be built, and it looks to be quite the badass machine, blending classic lines and modern tech to create a very desirable new toy for hedge fund managers everywhere.

When we saw this car at SEMA, it wore the Hemisfear moniker. But something happened on the way to (limited) production. Rumor has it Chrysler balked at the use of "HEMI" in the name, and so the Foose Coupe was born. Still available with a 392 crate motor, the Coupe can also be had with a Ford 5.4-liter supercharged engine like the one in the late GT. Foose describes his coupe as "Part supercar, part custom, part hot rod, it's the ultimate ride." Well, there will certainly be at least 50 people who think so. The Foose Coupe will be limited to just 50 copies and each will be hand signed by Chip when construction is completed at Metalcrafters, Inc. in their California facilities. We expect them to go quickly, despite their $295,000 base price.
