The old joke about Starbucks is that there are so many of the coffee shops across America that in some places you can sit in one location sipping a pumpkin spice latte and actually be able see another one of its stores across the street. If you think the brand is everywhere now, it's going to be truly ubiquitous at three universities this fall with a pilot program that has food trucks serving coffee to caffeine-starved students and faculty.


New regulations in Birmingham, AL set higher standards for food trucks operating in that community – namely that they must obtain permits from the local health department. The regulations, on the books since January 1 of this year, have also had the unintended consequence of preventing at least one church from distributing food to homeless city residents.


As if to prove the inevitable evolution of all things cool to pedestrian commercialism, the hipster trend of high-end food trucks is being invaded by cookie cutter chain names.
