Pity tiny Bethel, Alaska. First, when they want to "Run for the Border," it's a four-hour trip from the west coast of the state to Anchorage (not by car!). And according to Google Maps, the only restaurants in the entire town are a Subway franchise and something called Sho Gun Restaurant. So when a rumor was started that Taco Bell was going to set up shop in their little town, serious excitement ensued. Then fliers were posted around town heralding the fast food restaurant's pending arrival.

But, again, pity poor Bethel. Because the rumor was nothing more than someone's elaborate, cruel joke. Taco Bell was not coming to Bethel. A population of 6,200 just isn't enough to attract the mexican fast food chain.

But then Taco Bell's creative marketing department decided to turn the hoax into a PR opportunity. Their plan? Taco truck. Loaded with enough fixins to make 10,000 Doritos Locos tacos. Flown in by helicopter.

The townspeople greet the "Operation Alaska" airlifted food truck as if it were U.N. peacekeepers delivering international aid to a war-torn forward area. Kids cheer, adults beam. Taco Bell, if only temporarily, changes life in Bethel.

"This is like Heaven on Earth," one kid says. It's all a little creepy. Watch Taco Bell's new Bethel-based ads below.
Continue reading Taco Bell airlifts food truck into remote Alaska town after hoax

Taco Bell airlifts food truck into remote Alaska town after hoax originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 14:57:00 EST.
The Chicago Sun Times reports food truck operators in Chicago have met with a police crackdown. Some operators report officers lying in wait for the mobile food services to show up, threatening a variety of citations before the trucks even open their doors. How is that possible? The miracle of the Internet. Operators routinely announce their location or route for the day on social networking tools like Twitter or Facebook. While the Chicago Police Department hasn't said whether or not officers are mining the web for locations, it seems likely.

Food trucks have emerged as a popular way to grab a quick lunch bite in Chicago over the past year, though owners face charges from parking in loading zones to operating too close to an existing restaurant. A group of operators recently met with city officials in an attempt to establish new ordinances governing the trucks' legal operation. During the meeting, the city asked for a list of the most popular food truck spots, and it wasn't long before the police were waiting for them when business time rolled around.
Chicago cops using social networking tools against food trucks that use them originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 11:04:00 EST.
Nissan is gearing up for the Detroit Auto Show and two new concepts will grace the automaker's show stand, along with a Detroit-inspired food truck to keep the throngs satiated.

But more important than free hipster grub is the introduction of the Pathfinder Concept, which Nissan claims will inspire the next-generation utility vehicle's styling before the production model debuts later in 2012 and goes on sale towards the end of next year. Considering the current Pathfinder has been around since 2005 (with a facelift in 2008), it's due for a thorough overhaul. Persistent rumors have suggested that the next Pathfinder will eschew the body-on-frame architecture of the outgoing model in favor of a more car-like unibody.

Joining the Pathfinder Concept will be an all-electric van which we're assuming could be based on the NV series. Nissan says it's a concept that's suitable for both families and businesses, and continues its commitment to emissions-free motoring. Check the release after the break for the full details.
Continue reading Nissan confirms Pathfinder concept and more for Detroit

Nissan confirms Pathfinder concept and more for Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 14:28:00 EST.
Auto journalists love food. So if you're an automaker that's looking to get some hot ink about your brand-new food trucks, bringing them to an auto show during press days is a sure-fire way to get their attention. Well, as long as they're stocked with tasty edibles.

Professional gluttony aside, food trucks are becoming an increasingly popular sight in many towns, having spread out from major cities like Los Angeles and New York. Here at the LA Auto Show, Nissan is showing off two examples of its NV heavy-duty work van that have been converted into the sustenance-mobiles you see here. But instead of the usual taco trucks or Korean BBQ machines that typically roam the streets of Southern California, Nissan delivered a bit of comfort food to those typing away in the Los Angeles Convention Center. One food truck served up grilled cheese sandwiches, while another NV2500 HD targeted sweet-tooth types with ice cream sandwiches.

Check out both of Nissan's food trucks in the attached image gallery. As for us, we're going back for seconds.
Continue reading 2012 Nissan NV2500 HD food trucks deliver deliciousness in LA

2012 Nissan NV2500 HD food trucks deliver deliciousness in LA originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 18:32:00 EST.
There's no limit to what a versatile commercial van can be used for, from shuttling travelers to and from the airport to delivering all manner of goods and services. In many cities that includes food trucks, which have rapidly been growing in popularity especially in Los Angeles.

To demonstrate that versatility, Nissan is bringing a pair of food trucks to the LA Auto Show where hacks like us - at least, the lactose-tolerant among us - will be treated to grilled cheese and ice cream sandwiches. The foodstuffs are being provided by The Grilled Cheese Truck and the Coohlaus truck, two of LA's most popular mobile eateries, which have each found their way into a new Nissan NV2500 High Roof van.
Continue reading Nissan showcases NV versatility with food truck concepts

Nissan showcases NV versatility with food truck concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 Nov 2011 18:01:00 EST. Food trucks are everywhere right now. We're not talking about the metal boxes that slog from business to business hawking puddles of grease, but rather the burgeoning genre of mobile kitchens stocked with culinary treats. From Kogi to Baconmania and the OC Food Truck, many are packing up kitchens, and bringing food to waiting, hungry masses. One major food icon has taken notice of this trend and decided to jump into the food truck game.

Oscar Mayer has just added a 30-foot Wienermobile food truck to its fleet of vehicles. This newest Wienermobile was revealed in New York City, where celebrity chef Tyler Florence was on hand to dish out Oscar Mayer hot dogs.

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile Food Truck has a lot to live up to. This Ford E-Series wiener-delivery system joins a fleet filled with six iconic 27-foot-long Wienermobiles, and one mini 15-footer. The food truck is longer, and has hot dogs on hand to feed hungry folks, so it might not have to work too hard to become a welcome part of the family. A full press release is waiting for you after the jump, but sadly there are no hot dogs over there.
Continue reading Oscar Mayer takes on food truck craze with new Wienermobile

Oscar Mayer takes on food truck craze with new Wienermobile originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 May 2011 10:31:00 EST.
