Whether or not the foam-skinned car based on a Mercedes-Benz got your motor going yesterday, you have to give the artist credit for painstakingly completing not one, but two of these polyurethane-plated projects. Thanks to a reader's tip, we found this BMW 6 Series-based interpretation wearing the same brilliant red paint, flashy 30-inch dubs, and dual triangulated exhaust tips.

While the sculptor has kept much of the Bangle-butt intact, the overall aesthetics on this execution are much more pleasing to the eye. A glance inside indicates this attempt isn't as thorough as the other (the interior appears merely painted, not sculpted). However, as witnessed by the junk in the door-mounted map pocket, this one is getting some use on the streets too. Thanks for the tip Tarakonaz!

The 2008 Mustang that appears in August will be full o' beans. Soybeans. Ford has teamed with automotive supplier Lear Corporation on the creation of soy-based seat foam. Car seats currently contain roughly petroleum-based foam, and the new soy-based variety will substitute nearly a quarter of that mass with renewable content, as well as lower the amount of C0² emitted during the creation of the foam. Ford's been playing around with soy ever since with Model T, which contained 60 pounds of beans in its paint and molded plastic parts. This is the kind of environmental tech we can get behind -- and sit on -- without reservation. We do wonder, however, what it will do to that new car smell. This isn't the only "green" material Ford's using with regard to seating accommodations in '08 models, either. The new Escape's seat upholstery is made of eco-friendly recycled materials. Aside from the laughable script, the movie featured some good action, funny scenes with Dennis Leary, and some cool cars. One of the film's futuristic vehicles even demonstrated an advancement on the airbag idea in the shape of a quickly expanding foam that sealed the occupants inside the vehicle during a crash, thus protecting them from harm.

Flash forward (or is that backwards) to the present, and a similar product is now being touted as a theft deterrent. US firm Fujitsu Ten has found a way to use expanding foam to trap would-be car thieves in their seats. When movement is detected, some liquid chemical is released that rapidly expands to fill the whole car. The perp is trapped inside but can easily be cut free with a hot wire. The device has received a US Patent, but no customers as of yet.

Aside from being very embarassed from being trapped in a giant Cool Whip container, Johnny Low Jack is also going to be pretty upset when you send the cleaning bill for your car to his jail cell.

[Source: Auto Express]
Auto thieves get stuck on new deterrent originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Sep 2006 18:07:00 EST.
