The facelift Fiat's carrying out on its Grande Punto is subtle. Even so, it's hard to maintain your cover when the test mule self-immolates. We're not sure that a bigger MINI Cooper is exactly what the buying public at large has been waiting for, but it is exactly what they might get. We would certainly hope that the small-size MINI would remain in the line, though that would certainly negate whatever savings BMW is hoping for by collaborating with Fiat on the project in the first place. The T-Jet engines from Fiat look like a good thing. The basic principle is easy: reduce engine capacity to reduce fuel consumption, but boost the compression ratio and add twin-turbos, one for low rpm, other for higher.

First Audi, now Alfa Romeo - it seems everyone wants a hot hatchback to compete with BMW's popular MINI Cooper S. This one doesn't sound like blue-sky speculation though, with Automotive News Europe reporting that an Alfa Romeo "Junior" three-door hatchback has been green-lighted by parent company Fiat for a 2008 launch. The news marks a revival of the Alfa Junior nameplate, last used in the late '60s and early '70s.


Italy's Fiat Group, flush with the success of its flagship Fiat brand, has plans to more than double the sales volume of its niche-market Alfa Romeo and Lancia brands by 2010.
