The exciting new LaFerrari wasn't all that Ferrari had to announce today at the Geneva Motor Show. Ferrari chairman Luca Di Montezemolo added that the Italian automaker is looking to expand its relationship with Apple in the realm of in-car entertainment, which follows Apple executive Eddy Cue joining the Ferrari board of directors back in November.

According to Bloomberg, Di Montezemolo stated that the Ferrari FF would now come with iPad Minis as a part of the rear-seat entertainment system and Siri integration will be used with the infotainment system. Beyond the FF, though, it isn't clear what type of partnership will blossom between the two most powerful brands on the planet.
Ferrari and Apple deepening ties, FF gains Siri integration and standard iPad Minis originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Mar 2013 19:01:00 EST.
EVO's Harry Metcalfe had some questions about the day-to-day livability of the Ferrari FF. When he brought those questions up to Ferrari, they suggested he take one for a couple of weeks and try it out for, as he calls them, "mundane duties." The image above is Metcalfe pointing to the 660-horsepower, all-wheel drive FF parked in one of his fields because, since he lives on a farm, mucking about the green is part of his daily routine. "It could use more ground clearance," he says, "but that's an option on this car."

He does get it on the "tarmac" and he likes it even more there than in the mud. Except for the buttons on the steering wheel; he thinks learning to use them is like learning to play guitar. He has a lot more to say besides that, and you can watch him expound for all of 17 minutes in the video below.
Continue reading Two weeks and 2,000 miles in Ferrari's FF with Evo

Two weeks and 2,000 miles in Ferrari's FF with Evo originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Jan 2013 19:58:00 EST.
Perhaps overshadowed at the Paris Motor Show by the carbon fiber chassis bits of the still unnamed Enzo successor, was news from Ferrari about a roof. The oddball Italian supercar maker has announced that its FF will now be available with a full-length panoramic roof - the first of its kind for the manufacturer, since it normally doesn't have such long roofs to work with. In this case, the roof of the all-wheel drive four-seat hatch is made of a single massive pane of glass.

According to Ferrari, the new glass roof "gives occupants a genuine open-air driving feeling, while providing thermal and acoustic insulation." That said, it does not appear that the roof opens, so some of that 'open air' experience may come from lowering a window or two.

While there may be some concern over the added weight of such a structure, the FF plays more of a grand touring role when compared to the 458 Italia and F12berlinetta. There is no word on how this feature will affect the price of the FF, or when the new models with the glass roof will go on sale. All we know is, any price or weight changes will be overshadowed now by a spectacular view.
Continue reading Ferrari FF gets sweeping panoramic roof option

Ferrari FF gets sweeping panoramic roof option originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Oct 2012 13:31:00 EST.
The grandson of the co-creator of Red Bull has been arrested in Bangkok, Thailand and is accused of killing a policeman with his Ferrari. Vorajuth Yoovidhaya is the 27-year-old grandson of the late Chaleo Yoovidhaya, who created Red Bull. According to the BBC, Vorayuth has been accused of running over a 47-year-old policeman with a new Ferrari FF and dragging him down the road before the officer succumbed to a broken neck and multiple broken bones.

The crime was alleged to have been initially covered-up by a low-ranking police superintendent. The superintendent reportedly tried to detain an innocent man for the crime before the Bangkok police chief, Comronwit Toopgranjank, discovered what was happening. That man has since been released and the low-level officer has now been transferred to another post.

Toopgranjank, who personally escorted the Red Bull heir from his Bangkok home was quoted as saying, "A policeman is dead. I can't let this stand. I don't car how powerful they are. If I can't get the actual man in this case, I will resign."

Yoovidhaya is set to be charged with "causing death by driving" and leaving the scene of a crime. He faces up to ten years in jail.
Ferrari-driving Red Bull heir held after allegedly dragging police officer to death originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 10:18:00 EST.
Monotony can be draining, but there are certain forms of it we could get used to. Like being around Ferrari models all day, every day. Sure, they're all two-door, rear-drive sports cars, but they're exciting ones at that. But then comes along the FF to break the mold of monotony with its unique all-wheel drive and four-seat <strike>hatchback</strike> "shooting brake" bodystyle. Like any others around Ferraris all day, we could imagine the boys at the Novitec Rosso workshop standing up and taking notice. And this is what resulted.

The Ferrari specialist shop has enhanced the new FF with a series of modifications for those for whom the stock version just won't do. Engine modifications are limited to remapped electronics and a new exhaust system, which together raise output by 42 horsepower to 702 in total. Fresh springs have been added, along with 21 and 22-inch wheels in front and back, respectively, wearing Pirelli PZero rubber. And as you can see, Novitec has also enhanced the FF with a full carbon fiber body kit, joined by smoked taillight and indicator housings and a series of interior enhancements you can read all about in the press release below.
Continue reading Novitec Rosso hatches plans for Ferrari FF

Novitec Rosso hatches plans for Ferrari FF originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 15:44:00 EST.
Even at a team like Ferrari (which has more grand prix victories to its name than any other team in Formula One - 217 to be specific), every win counts. Especially these days when they're far more scarce than they were in the Michael Schumacher days of back-to-back championships. So when Fernando Alonso took home the checkered flag in Malaysia this past weekend, there was cause for celebration in Maranello.

After winning the second race of the season and taking the lead in the standings, Alonso swung by Ferrari headquarters for a nice long chat with chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, some training in the on-site gym and the traditional raising of the flag to mark the occasion, after which the two-time world champion apparently was gifted a brand-spankin' new Ferrari FF.

Whether the four-seat, all-wheel-drive, V12-powered shooting brake was a bonus outlined in his contract or a simple gesture of appreciation from his employers is likely known only by Alonso, Montezemolo and very few others, but either way, we doubt Fernando is complaining. The FF joins a growing stable of cars the star driver has received since signing with Ferrari, including a custom 458 Italia, a Maserati GranTourismo Convertible, an Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari and a special edition Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.
The Jensen Interceptor FF and the Ferrari FF share two letters, but the commonality extends far beyond a nameplate. Both cars are exotic GTs, both have rather unusual roof profiles and 2+2 seating, both are pioneers in all-wheel drive... and both would be fantastic for a trip through the Swiss alps.

To put that last bit to the test, Classic Driver took the pair up to St. Moritz, and brought along a video crew to document the encounter. Follow the jump to see what they captured.
Continue reading Jenson Interceptor FF and Ferrari FF take to the slopes of St. Moritz

Jenson Interceptor FF and Ferrari FF take to the slopes of St. Moritz originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 11 Feb 2012 19:45:00 EST.
There are drawbacks to every kind of alternative to burning fossil fuels in our cars. Electric cars don't have enough range.Hybrids are burdened with what essentially boils down to two parallel powertrains. Hydrogen is limited to where it is available. Bio-ethanol has its own drawbacks, but don't tell that to the performance enthusiast. That's because E85 - similar to what IndyCars run on but mixed with 15% pump gasoline - is not only a renewable and cleaner source of energy, it also provides more power.

Take the Koenigsegg Agera R, for example. With 927 horsepower on tap from ordinary 95-octane gasoline, the Koenigsegg is already one of the fastest, most powerful cars money can buy. But fill it with E85 and it offers up almost 1,100 hp. Now a Norwegian firm is offering an aftermarket bio-ethanol conversion for the Ferrari FF that provides a similar transformation.

Whereas the stock FF (which could now just as easily stand for Flex Fuel) already drives a prodigious 650 horsepower to all four wheels, the converted version packs a whopping 875 hp for a sub-three-second sprint to sixty, all the while dropping the car's emissions figures by some 80%. The conversion costs just €1500 (less than $2k) - rather insignificant considering the FF's $300k+ sticker price - and has reportedly been fitted yb an authorized Ferrari dealer to at least one customer's car, though that doesn't mean it's covered by (and very well might invalidate) the FF's warranty.
Ferrari FF converted to run on bio-ethanol packs 875 hp originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 09:01:00 EST.
Ferrari factory drivers are used to racing in all sorts of conditions: under the baking sun, in the pouring rain, at night and at sunset. Competing in the snow has historically been beyond their usual purview, but then again, Ferrari never made an all-wheel-drive vehicle before. That's where the FF comes in.

The Ferrari Four, as you may recall, channels its 660 horsepower to all four wheels through an innovative new all-wheel drive system that ups the traction but ditches much of the weight penalty usually associated with these types of systems systems. Ferrari has taken the occasion of its annual Wrooom event - a pre-season retreat at Italy's Madonna di Campiglio ski resort - to demonstrate the FF's abilities by putting its star Formula One drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa behind the wheel for a downhill slalom.

So who won? Ferrari says it was a dead tie. But while we don't believe that bit any further than we could throw one of their sportscars (light as they may be), there ought to be plenty of time to see which driver is quicker when the F1 season kicks off in a few months. In the meantime, you can check out the video and press release after the jump, along with our high-resolution gallery above.
Continue reading Alonso and Massa slalom Ferrari FF coupes on the slopes [w/video]

Alonso and Massa slalom Ferrari FF coupes on the slopes [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 14:59:00 EST.
Every year luxury retailer Neiman Marcus picks one car and commissions a lot of them for sale in its holiday catalog. Past examples have varied wildly - from a custom chopper and a Camaro convertible to a Jaguar XJ and a Lexus IS-F - the one common trait being that they'd all be welcome items to find under the Christmas tree. And they always sell out as fast as they can accelerate.

This year's chosen car was no exception to that trend, as all ten examples of the Neiman Marcus edition Ferrari FF sold in less than an hour. Fifty minutes, in fact, was all it took, despite a a $395,000 sticker price. For the extra $95k premium over list, the ten buyers each got an individually-numbered FF in Grigio Caldo and a trip to Ferrari's winter driving school in Aspen - and they'll get them a good couple of years earlier than it would take to wait on the list like everybody else.
Neiman Marcus moves ten special edition Ferrari FFs in just 50 minutes originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 18:54:00 EST.
The season for gift-giving is quickly approaching, and if you're all out of ideas for that certain someone special on your list, Neiman Marcus may have just the thing. This year's fantasy gift is a Ferrari FF. For the low, low price of just $395,000, buyers can snag a unique Neiman Marcus version of the all-wheel-drive, 650-horsepower Ferrari hatch. Only 10 versions of the vehicle will be built for the holiday season, each packing its own complimentary custom luggage set as part of the deal. As with each standard FF purchase, owners will be treated to the Ferrari Winter Driving Experience in Aspen, Colorado, as well.

As you may recall, the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible received the Neiman Marcus treatment last year with special paint for a staggering $75,000. That model sold out before we could bat an eye, and if we were the betting type, we'd say the same thing will happen to the Ferrari FF Neiman Marcus Edition. Head over to the Neiman Marcus site for more information.
This year's Neiman Marcus fantasy car gift?
If you're one of those good souls who doesn't mind getting their Ferrari out in foul weather, we have good news for you. The Italian automaker has just announced the creation of a special winter driving school in Aspen, Colorado. The 2012 Winter Driving Experience is the first snow and ice driving school in America, and should offer participants the chance to sample everything that the new Ferrari FF has to offer in low-traction situations on a custom-built snow and ice course. A fleet of eight FF models have been specially prepared for the task.

Ferrari says that the whole experience will set you back a cool $11,300, plus $950 per guest, though don't expect to lay down your credit card and hop in line unless you already own a Ferrari - the course is for current Prancing Horse owners only. The event will take place over three days and two nights, and Ferrari says that the instruction is based on the successful Pilota On Ice program made popular in Italy. Sounds like a good time to us. Hit the jump for the full press blast and check out the Ferrari site for more information.
Continue reading Ferrari debuts new snow and ice driving school in Aspen

Ferrari debuts new snow and ice driving school in Aspen originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 10:30:00 EST.
To help the well-heeled keep their 2011 Ferrari FFs out of the ditches in icy conditions, and give them something to plan a ski vacation around, Ferrari has announced it will hold a winter driving course for new FF owners in Aspen this winter.

The course is available with limited slots exclusively available for Ferrari owners over a six- or seven-week period this winter. The spots will be made available late this summer on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The American program is based on the Pilota on Ice programs Ferrari offered to European buyers in the Alps. Aspen may not be quite as shi-shi a setting, but an ice road laid down among Colorado's famous "fourteeners" sounds like a good time to us.
Ferrari's absence at North American auto shows the past few years has meant that its newer vehicles have made their debuts at some less conventional venues. Last year, the 458 Italia's first U.S. appearance was at the Ferrari Challenge event at Miller Motorsports Park. This weekend, the Ferrari FF received a private showing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the Ferrari Racing Days.

In addition to the new Ferrari four-seater itself, the display showcased the numerous interior options and a full set of matching luggage. The car on hand was a European version, but retail sales of the U.S.-spec FF should begin at either the end of October or the beginning of November of this year. Only 40 cars will be available for the rest of 2011. After that, Ferrari plans on selling approximately 200 cars yearly to American buyers.

Ferrari has started offering a free, seven-year maintenance plan for customers in Europe. The plan covers all 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia, California Spyder or FF models bought at an authorized Prancing Horse dealership. For now, the program is only available across the pond, but will make it to these shores later in the year.

According to Ferrari, the plan is attached to each individual car, which means it's transferable to different owners if the vehicle is sold within its first seven years. Coverage includes the cost of labor and original replacement parts, as well as oil and brake fluid.

When the program goes global, Ferrari says it will be the first maintenance plan of its kind to be offered around the world. With any luck, the new perk will help Ferrari gain back some consumer confidence after the the bad publicity surrounding the 458 Italia's annoying propensity to burst into flames. Read the full Ferrari press release after the jump. Top tip, Don!

The Ferrari brand is among the most exclusive and revered in the world, but how much is it worth? Bloomberg reports that Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne feels the Prancing Horse is worth more than 5 billion euros, or $7.3 billion in U.S. dollars. That's a big chunk of change for an automaker that cleared only $430 million in 2010 on sales of $2.73 billion, and the total represents 63 percent of the entire Fiat group's estimated worth of $11.4 billion.

The reason for Marchionne's high valuation of the Italian exotic car maker is its "sacred brand" status. Like an NFL team that sells for $1 billion only to average $20 million in profits per year, Ferrari is so highly regarded that it could sell for well beyond its cash-generation capabilities would indicate. If Ferrari were valued at $7.3 billion, that would be 17 times its annual earnings. Luxury brands average about 12.7 times annual earnings.

Marchionne has every reason to value his prized property as high as possible, but analysts and banks don't seem to agree with the CEO's assessment. Estimates are that Ferrari is worth about $4.3 billion. But at the same time, banks appear very eager for Fiat to issue an IPO for Ferrari, which could be an indication that there is serious money to be made.

Fiat has mentioned the possibility of offering an IPO for Ferrari as a way to generate cash and eliminate debt, though the automaker claims no decision has been made to put up the brand for public sale.

In other news, Marchionne told Bloomberg that he has put in an order for a white Ferrari FF. Yeah, we can see why Marchionne places a high value on the Ferrari brand. It's good to be the CEO.

The last time Ferrari blew absolutely everyone away with wall-to-wall surprises and equally sizzling performance all wrapped into one car was in 2002 with its Enzo. We're not saying that all things between then and today have been shabby, mind you. And we're also not saying that the 2012 Ferrari FF does it in marquee-and-fireworks Enzo-style, but the unexpected innovations aboard this gorgeous trailblazing all-weather shooting brake will keep conversation heated for an uncommonly long time. This is Ferrari thinking way outside its box of usual GT forms and, for no other reason than this, we must applaud them.

You're probably expecting us to drop the "But..." right about now, yanking the carpet away in the damning-with-faint-praise tradition, however, there isn't one to drop on the parade here. We've just reeled off some 150 miles of sheer V12 driving joy in the endlessly challenging Dolomite Mountains of northeastern Italy, and when finished with that, we only wanted more. Admittedly, we could do with a better onboard sat-nav and command center than the Harman Kardon unit, as well as a slightly weightier steering map for warm and dry days, but these are our only moments of quandary when assessing the FF.

This is why we can't have nice things, CAR Magazine. Ferrari recently hosted a passel of journalists from around the globe in Italy to fully introduce the company's new FF to the world. You know, the sexy-as-sin shooting brake with a European price tag of £230,000? Yeah, that Ferrari FF.

Jethro Bovingdon showed up to represent the CAR crowd, but ran into a bit of trouble while trying to work up a video monologue and pilot the obscenely expensive Italian supercar through some narrow country roadwork at the same time.

Shortly after announcing that he intended to demonstrate "just how committed to the throttle you can be on a very twisty narrow road that shouldn't suit this car," Bovingdon managed to bash the FF off of a curb. According to CAR, the damage was limited to both wheels on the passenger side. We're guessing the repairs likely cost more than the tester's fancy sunglasses, but not by much.

Typically when an automaker rolls out a new vehicle, it fits into a certain mold. Even if it isn't replacing a specific model, it generally follows a certain formula by which the automaker operates. Especially for an automaker like Ferrari, which only makes - and only has ever made - two-door, rear-wheel drive coupes and convertibles. That was the case, at least, until the new FF came along.

The FF represents a complete game-changer for Maranello - an entirely new model with a new engine, new body-style and new four-wheel drive system never before seen in a Ferrari. And to drive that point home, the Prancing Horse marque has released yet another set of videos: one documenting the new technology in the car, another the flexible cabin configurations and a third going behind the scenes in the production of the previous videos released. Follow the jump to watch for yourself.

Fire up your imagination, because a brand new exotic car configurator has come online. It's time to turn your attention to the 2012 Ferrari FF. You can pick out the exterior color, wheels and a slew of interior color schemes and optional extras.

Our Ferrari FF will wears Avorio (Italian for ivory) paint on the outside, to mimic the kind of conditions we hope to force upon the 4RM drivetrain. However, should you desire something different, Ferrari offers a grand total of 44 colors to choose from. And that's just for the outside - the interior has an equally dizzying amount of color options. Head over to the Ferrari FF configurator and be sure to share your ideal setup in the Comments.
