Goodwood Festival of Speed 2009 – Click above for high-res image gallery
The Goodwood Festival of Speed begins on Friday and we wanted to let you know that we'll be there, once again, to cover the action. Just like last year, we hope to provide you with massive galleries chock full of high res pics of everything from the motorbikes to the rally cars, from the concours to the F1 action, from the special displays to the air show. As an overview of the event and of our coverage, we've posted a few essential lists after the jump. We understand that most of you can't atte
We've shown you a lot of the vehicles that were at the track during the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week. Our hope was to help you experience the event for yourself, in case you missed it. While there have been tons of posts and pics along the way, we barely scratched the surface of what a visitor can see and do while at the FoS. It's one of the greatest automotive events we've ever attended. Part concours, part auction, part motor show, and part hillclimb, it's like taking the Monterey week
Here's another big gallery of pics from Goodwood. This time we're posting images of the various open-wheel racers that haven't been seen elsewhere in our galleries. Think Indy, vintage sports car, A1GP, and the like. A lot of highlights in this group: The 1933 Napier-Railton that was driven by Rowan Atkinson on Sunday, the "Blitzen Benz" that sounded like a biplane, Arie Luyendyk driving Emerson Fittipaldi's 1990 Penske-Ilmor PC-19, Sir Jackie Stewart driving the 1966 Lola-Ford T90 he drove in t
Although we do get our fair share of sports car races over in the States, the popularity of this type of racing, compared to, say, NASCAR, makes it just a blip on the radar. European sports car racing is way more popular. At Goodwood we got a chance to see some great examples of race teams and manufacturers who, over the years, have taken some of their best sports cars and fiddled with them enough to take them racing. OK, in some cases these were definitely not the company's finest vehicles, but
Goodwood has been an incredible experience and we hope you have enjoyed the coverage as much as we've enjoyed providing it. One of the numerous highlights for us was undoubtedly the Formula 1 cars; from those outrageous beasts of the '30s and '40s, through the mid-engine revolution, and on up to the technically-packed computers on wheels we have today. Friday and Saturday they had a relatively dry track to play with, and most of them seemed to be taking advantage of the conditions. Sunday's rain
While slogging through the mud at Goodwood the other day, we came across a display building that looked like it might offer some interesting vehicles to peruse (as well as a dry place to stop and rest for a bit). It was called FoS-TECH, and inside we found some of the best show cars from the last few of years. The Toyota FT-HS, Peugeot's 908RC, H2O, and Quark, the Saab Aero X, the Nissan Pivo, the Tesla Roadster, the Citroen C-Airplay, Mazda's Hakaze, and the BMW Hydrogen 7 were placed throughou
Although we are primarily a blog about cars, we frequently stray a bit from the all-car formula to cover vehicles that might be interesting to ourselves and hopefully the rest of you. Sometimes we are at events that focus on cars, but other vehicles are invited to play as well, and we tend to like those other vehicles as much as we love our cars. At Goodwood, you can find some of the most amazing cars from throughout history on display and racing up the hill. You can also find helicopters, boats
The theme of the 2007 Festival of Speed was Spark of Genius – Breaking Records, Pushing Boundaries, and so it's fitting that Land Speed Record (LSR) vehicles were given a special display at this year's event. A group of the vehicles was arranged on the cricket pitch, including several from Bonneville Speed Weeks past. There was the 1960 Challenger 1 (4 engines, 400+ mph), The Blue Flame, which managed better than 630 mph in 1970, a Ford Coupe, some MGs, the 1949 SoCal belly-tank car (198 m
The Bugatti Royale was an interesting car. It was quite a novel idea for an automaker to build vehicles exclusively for royalty and heads of state, and though It's been 80 years since Bugatti introduced the Type 41 Royale, the cars look as stunning as ever. Altogether, six Royales were built. Five of them were at Goodwood this weekend. At first, they thought it was only going to be four (only four?), but the Henry Ford Museum came through and brought over the fifth one at the last minute. All of
One of the main static display areas at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed is the Cartier "Style et Luxe" concours. As the press release tells us, "The Cartier 'Style et Luxe' is possibly the world's most coveted car design competition." Not only does it celebrate beauty, imagination and innovation, but it uses non-traditional judges to choose the award winners in 10 or so different categories. It's about art and inspiration and is fittingly judged by artists. That can mean actors, musicians
Although the auction has already ended and we have no sales results, we did get a chance to visit the cars that were being sold by Bonhams at Goodwood this year. We thought you might like a peak inside the auction tent. A fairly small catalog didn't mean there was a lack of things to see. Check out the gallery for yourself to see the eclectic mix of lots. This Lancia 037 Rally (above) really called to us.
This year, Ferrari is celebrating its 60th anniversary as a company. The Goodwood organizers decided to have a small party-within-a-party at Goodwood's Festival of Speed and turned over the stables for a display of very special Ferraris. Think of it as one per decade, with some artistic license. Some of the most legendary names from the Maranello marque's history are represented, along with a pair of new "escorts."
The 2007 Goodwood Festival of Speed officially kicked off on Thursday evening, when the Earl of March held a gala VIP ball at his home, Goodwood House, to raise money for the Richard Burns Foundation, and to unveil the grand display for this year's event. After a black tie dinner, guests were ushered out to the darkened yard below the massive display. A little rain couldn't dampen the enthusiasm, but thankfully the speeches were kept brief. Suddenly the lights went on and a set of huge pilings w
