The Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder may have been introduced to the mainstream by the classic 1986 John Hughes' film Ferris Bueller's Day Off (of course, that car was a replica), but the iconic convertible has long been one of the most desirable collector cars for those in the know. With a little over 100 built, California Spyders rarely come up for sale, and when they do, they bring big money. Back in 2008, a 1961 model set a record for a car sold at auction with a $10.9 million price tag.

Those wanting to add a 250 GT California Spyder to their collection (and have the means) will have a chance later this month in Monterey, with a 1962 SWB (Short Wheel Base) model crossing the block at RM Auctions' event. One of just 37 SWB cars with the more desirable enclosed headlight design, the car is finished in Rosso Corsa paint and has a tan leather interior. Under the hood is Ferrari's legendary 3.0-liter V12, the same powerplant in the 250 GTO. RM estimates the value of the car to be in the $7.5-9 million range.

Honda isn't typically one to dive into the Super Bowl advertising fracus with splashy spots, so when the company anonymously teased us with a quick clip of Matthew Broderick reprising his role from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, our eyebrows did a little dance. Now the company has dropped a full-length ad on the web, and it features Broderick skipping his acting duties for a little frolicking about in the city. The spot features more than a few classic Ferris Bueller lines (though nitpickers will note that some of them are a little off), and while it's well put-together, seeing the star take to the wheel of a 2012 CR-V instead of a 1961 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder is a crushing reminder of our own mortality.

Still, we like Honda's crack at half-time advertising a good bit more than the previously released Audi vampire-fest (though not more than the clever Ahab spot that's presently circulating televisions nationwide). Hit the jump to take in Honda's spot before the big game, and be sure to keep a steady out for the various 'easter eggs.'
Continue reading Matthew Broderick reprises Ferris Bueller for Honda CR-V Super Bowl ad

Matthew Broderick reprises Ferris Bueller for Honda CR-V Super Bowl ad originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Jan 2012 10:21:00 EST.
To the millions of Gen Xers sitting in cubicles listening to New Wave bands on Spotify, wondering how they ever got to be so out of shape, so gray, so middle-aged and so much like their parents, this little 10-second clip that showed up on YouTube yesterday promised something great - the return of a hero, a new chapter in the generational totem that is Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Alas, amidst all the speculation that Matthew Broderick would be reprising his role in a belated sequel, comes this revelation: It's just a teaser for a Super Bowl ad.

According to Jalopnik, the ad is for Honda, and it will rehash all the best scenes in the original film. It's a big enough deal that Honda has drafted Todd Phillips, he of The Hangover fame, to direct (John Hughes, director of FBDO, passed away in 2009). Of course, this means the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider will not be appearing, replaced, according to the report, by a 2012 Honda CR-V.

Not to sound too Cameron-like, but if that's true, it is depressing. Click past the jump to see the quick teaser video.
Continue reading Matthew Broderick to reprise Ferris Bueller role in Honda Super Bowl ad?

Matthew Broderick to reprise Ferris Bueller role in Honda Super Bowl ad? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jan 2012 12:30:00 EST.
Highland Park, Illinois is home to a very special house. Architecture buffs will recognize 370 Beech Street as a steel and glass building designed by notable architects A. James Speyer and David Haid. To auto enthusiasts, however, 370 Beech is where one unforgettable movie Ferrari met its tragic demise at the hands of Cameron Frye in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's also for sale. Still.

We first told you about this house last year, when it was listed with an asking price of $2.3 million. Guess what? It never sold and the price has come way down. Today, the so-called "Ferris Bueller house" could be yours for just $1.65 million. If we had the means, we'd love to park Zach Bowman's International Pickup in view of nature and nosy neighbors... so he could kick it through the glass when he finally loses his mind.

What say you, Autoblog reader - Is the house is worth the dough or is it just "something d-o-o economics?"

eBay Find of the Day: 1959 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder - Click above for high-res image gallery

One of our favorite cars on the planet, and perhaps in the known galaxy, is the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder. This love affair is easily traced back to one Mr. Ferris Bueller and his Most Excellent Day Off. Sure, the car used in that movie was a Ford V8-powered kit car (oh, the delicious irony of that!) but the looks were there and they seared a lasting impression on our retinas and in our hearts. If one were to pop up on eBay, we would surely be ready to buy it - wait, scratch that because one IS on eBay with a current bid of $600,000 and an unmet reserve. This one's a little rich for our blood but a steal for anyone out there...with the means.

This particular example is not your standard one-of-50-or-so-produced classic Ferrari 250 GT dream machines. This happens to be one of the nine aluminum-bodied competition cars. It also features the Tipo 508 D frame, which was an improvement over the less-stiff Tipo 508 C. The car has an interesting history as well. The son of the second owner was driving it home from a fishing trip in Florida when he was run off the road and landed between two bridge abutments. The body of the car was lightly damaged and some side body panels were fixed using steel instead of the original alloy material.

Since the car is not a perfect specimen, it just might be ripe for the picking. It certainly looks amazing, is original with the exception of the repaired panels and it represents an amazing period in the Ferrari timeline. The mileage is listed at 52,000 and we would love to help someone put a few more on the clock. We'll even bring our copy of "Beat City" by The Flowerpot Men. Check out the auction for yourself over at eBay Motors and then a look through the gallery below. Finally, don't forget to take a peek after the jump for a clip of some Ferris Bueller Ferrari action highlights.

PS: anyone who posts video of the car being destroyed will be banned (no, not really) - it's been years since we watched that scene but our hearts simply cannot take another viewing.
We reported just a couple of weeks ago that the replica Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder - built atop an MG for use in the cult classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off - was heading to the auction block. But with the auction fast approaching, the man who played Ferris has publicly discouraged anyone from actually buying the replicar in question.

The remarks were made by Matthew Broderick - the actor put on the map by his lead role in Ferris - at the debut for The Addams Family, a remake of another classic, starring his longtime friend Nathan Lane. Speaking with journalists from the red carpet, Broderick recalled that the car "often didn't start" when they were filming and characterized it as "unreliable". If you say so, Ferris, but that's hardly cause to drive out through a glass wall and into the ravine below. Thanks for the tip, POV!

When a legitimate Ferrari 250GT Spyder California goes on sale at auction, the ultra-rare droptops can fetch $10 million or more. The are two reasons the 250GT fetches so much cash: because there were fewer than 100 copies made between 1958 and 1963 and because we're talking about a gorgeous Ferrari. Now switch out the legit Ferrari with one of the many replica 250GTs, the payout would likely be so insignificant many auction houses wouldn't bother.

That's almost universally true, but if you're talking about the actual 1961 Ferrari 250GT replica used in the classic John Hughes movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the same rules don't necessarily apply. The one-of-a-kind replica, built off of a far more pedestrian MG platform, is being auctioned off at the Bonhams Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia auction on April 19 at the RAF Museum London. The price tag for a piece of automotive movie history? The auction house is reportedly looking to snag £30,000 to £40,000 ($45,000 to $60,000 in U.S. funds) for the little red ragtop. The fake Ferrari is reportedly ready to be driven, but rumor has it that the replica wasn't even reliable when the movie was being shot back in the mid-80s.

Maybe we're just big fans of the film, but we thought it might go for a bit more - perhaps it would have more potential at a Stateside auction. Either way, we're hoping that whoever just bought Cameron's house (it was up for sale last year) splurges a little and reunites these two. Bonus video footage of both from the movie available after the jump.

Holger Schubert's award-winning garage -- Click above for high-res image gallery

Last summer, Maserati held a competition to identify the best garages in the world. There were two categories: Concept and Existing. While the concept winner was pretty spectacular, the existing garage was breathtaking. Remember the glass-walled garage in Ferris Bueller's Day Off? The one that Cameron launched his father's vintage Ferrari California Spider through? That was a pretty amazing garage and similar to Holger Schubert's Maserati competition winner. The difference is that Schubert took that concept one step further and simply built a 10-foot concrete bridge to his glass-walled living room.

The ultra-modern room won the Maserati contest, which was actually done in conjunction with Architectural Digest magazine. It's decorated with "stylish furniture, a built-in bookcase and a flat-screen TV that slides on tracks past walls of glass that frame an ocean view." Oh, there's also that immaculate Ferrari 512 BBi sitting front-and-center.

The living room garage is part of a $1.5 million remodel that product designer Schubert has undertaken on his Brentwood home. Although initially granted permission by the city to build the bridge so he could better comply with off-street parking regulations, Los Angeles officials are now asking him to tear it down. Neighbors have apparently complained about the bridge and see it as a safety risk as well as a bad precedent for homes in the area. Schubert thinks they're just pissed that his remodeling project is taking so long. It's been about five years so far. We think they're just jealous of the gorgeous grigio Boxer.

It's not over for Schubert. There's still a slim chance he might be able to save the award-winning garage by getting a zoning variance or winning a court reprieve. We wouldn't hold our breath if we were him.

Cameron's home from Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Click above for an image gallery

"The place is like a museum. It's very beautiful and very cold, and you're not allowed to touch anything." So says the title character in reference to his best friend Cameron's home in the John Hughes classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The house in question, which is located at 370 Beech Street in Highland Park, Illinois, is indeed rather beautiful, and it's also for sale right now, listed at a cool $2.3 million.

This 5,300 square-foot contemporary home sits on .75 acres and features four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a giant 40 x 25 living room, but what we're most interested in is the all-glass detached three-car garage out back that's cantilevered over a Ferrari-killing ravine.

One minor word of caution: should you happen to purchase this particular home and have the means to stock the garage with a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California (even if it is just a fiberglass-bodied replica based on an MG), we suggest you keep the door locked.

Gallery: Ferris Beuller home for sale

Gallery: Ferrari 250 GT Californias at Pebble Beach

[Source: Realtor.com via 0-60mag.com]
Cameron's house from Ferris Bueller's Day Off up for sale - 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California not included originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 May 2009 10:28:00 EST.
