Ferrari and Ford retro supercars on The Smoking Tire - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Any racing fan nut, automotive enthusiast or classic car nut worth his driving mocs knows the story of the Ford GT40. In the early 1960s Ferrari was on a six-time winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That's when Henry Ford II initiated proceedings to take over the Maranello sportscar-maker and racing team.

As the story goes, though, the notoriously intractable Enzo Ferrari didn't like the terms and canceled the deal at the 11th hour. Ford was left holding his hat and out of spite commissioned the GT40 with the explicit aim of knocking his Italian counterpart off his high (prancing) horse. The result was that, with the GT40, Ford won Le Mans four times in a row.

Now the Ferrari 250 GTO wasn't one of the cars that won at Le Mans during Ferrari's six-year reign. It was busy winning other categories during the same period. But that's alright, because the car in the video after the jump isn't a real GTO anyway. It is a real Ferrari, though: a 365 GTB/4 Daytona rebodied to look like a GTO. And it's not facing off against a GT40 either - that's actually the modern tribute, the 2005 Ford GT.

Do either of those facts mitigate the sight of seeing these cars take to the mountain roads outside Malibu, California? Hardly. But don't take our word for it, follow the jump to watch the video for yourself and see Matt Farrah of The Smoking Tire take the joyride of his life.
Crockett and Tubbs sure looked pimpin' cruising the streets of Miami in their Ferrari Daytona Spyder. Thing is, as big a Ferrari nut as producer Michael Mann is, he wasn't man enough to get hold of a real drop-top Daytona: the one featured in Miami Vice was a replica. But Mann wasn't the only American executive trying to get his hands on one. Though his great grandfather may have lost the opportunity to buy Enzo Ferrari's outfit outright, Edsel Ford II managed to acquire this very rare and highly sought-after Daytona Spyder on his own.

Only 121 examples were officially produced by Maranello - supplemented by a wealth of chop-jobs perpetrated on the more common Daytona coupe - and this one was once owned, among its three pink-slip holders - by Edsel Ford II. One of only 22 made in yellow, this example has recently undergone a full restoration and comes certified by the rigorous Ferrari Classiche program. It's anticipated to fetch upwards of $1 million when it crosses RM's auction block on Amelia Island in March.

The Daytona isn't the only rare, million-dollar Ferrari classic among the early consignments lined up for Amelia Island, though. The RM Auction event will also feature a rare four-cam, alloy-bodied 275 GTB/4. The car was acquired by Luigi Chinetti, the official importer of Ferraris to the United States, and displayed at the 1967 New York Auto Show. The fully restored show car, in a rather striking copper paint scheme, is estimated to fetch between $1,350,000 and $1,750,000. The auction is stillstill several months away, so stay tuned for more key consignments as they're announced. In the meantime, you can check out these particularly stunning stallions in the galleries below.

Ferrari celebrates the 40th anniversary of the iconic 365 GTB/4 Daytona this year. Well, sorta. While Lotus is marking its 60th anniversary a few years early, Ferrari decided to celebrate the Daytona's 40th a year late. Which makes some degree of sense when you consider that last year the company was pretty busy with its grand worldwide 60th anniversary celebrations.

On display at its show stand in Geneva this year, Ferrari had a spectacular specimen for all to see (and a nice Ferrari Daytona next to her), which we enjoyed photographing and you can enjoy viewing in the gallery at the bottom of this post. Meanwhile this past weekend, the company invited the owners of 20 Daytonas from around the world to the factory's Fiorano test track in Maranello, across the 330km "Circuito delle tre province" where Enzo Ferrari retired from racing, and on to the Mugello track (also owned by Ferrari) for the second annual Mugello Historic Festival. That's all very well and nice, but with Ferrari confirmed to bring a new model to the Paris show in October and test mules with distinctly Daytona-like headlights running around Italy, we can't help but wonder (and hope) if Maranello isn't planning a more enduring tribute to the iconic grand tourer.

Read more about the Daytona anniversary tour in the press release after the jump, view in images by clicking on the thumbnails below, and revisit our Geneva gallery via the thumbnails below that.
