<br /> Very rarely does a Ferrari 250 GTO come up for sale, and if it does, you'll probably never hear about it. Most sales are done behind closed doors, and the amount of said transactions are almost never disclosed to the public. That's just part of the mystique behind the world's most valuable car, and it's partially why the cars are so coveted. Just 36 examples were built between 1962 and 1963, each still in existence and easily carrying an eight-figure price tag. A few years ago, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/17/ferrari-250-gto-rumored-to-have-sold-for-28-5-million/">250 GTO supposedly changed hands for nearly $30 million</a>, but no one can completely confirm the rumor. <br /> <br /> We will, however, have more details about the next sale of a 250 GTO. RM Auctions have announced that they will be doing a "private treaty sale" of 1963 250 GTO chassis #4675GT. The car has been in possession of its current Japanese owner, Yoshiho Matsuda, since 1996 (a low point for the value of the car compared to the high prices of the late 1980s), and it has an <a href="http://www.barchetta.cc/english/All.Ferraris/Detail/4675GT.250GTO.htm">extensive racing history</a>. <br /><br />We saw the car at the Pebble Beach Concour d'Elegance back in 2004, and while its Series II bodywork isn't quite as stunning as earlier models, it's still an extraordinarily beautiful car. If you've got millions of dollars just sitting around, now is the time to break out the checkbook and buy your very own rolling piece of V12-powered Italian artwork. Hit the jump for the official press release from RM or click the high-res gallery below for a beautiful studio shot plus several of our photographs from our 2004 encounter with the car. <br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-ferrari-250-gto">1963 Ferrari 250 GTO chassis #4675GT</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-ferrari-250-gto/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/02/rmauctions250gto_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-ferrari-250-gto/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/02/250gto467501_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-ferrari-250-gto/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/02/250gto467502_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-ferrari-250-gto/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/02/250gto467503_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-ferrari-250-gto/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/02/250gto467504_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <em><strong><small>Non-Studio Photos by <a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/">Drew Phillips</a></small></strong></em><em><strong><small> / </small></strong></em><em><strong><small>Copyright (C)2010 Weblogs, Inc.<br /> </small></strong></em><br /> [Source: RM Auctions]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/04/ultra-rare-1963-ferrari-250-gto-up-for-sale-by-rm-auctions-wi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ultra-rare 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO up for sale by RM Auctions... will it set a record?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/04/ultra-rare-1963-ferrari-250-gto-up-for-sale-by-rm-auctions-wi/">Ultra-rare 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO up for sale by RM Auctions... will it set a record?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 16:56:00 EST. <br />
Episode #141 of the Autoblog Podcast marks the first time we're joined by a guest outside the Autoblog Inner Circle, and we're hoping that it's the start of a trend. This week, our interview couch is occupied by drift, rally and stunt legend (and all-around good guy) Tanner Foust, the only back-to-back Formula D champion ever. Since Tanner's a racer, we kick off the show talking about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/monterey-2009-ferrari-250-tr-gets-airborn-makes-friends-with-t/">heartbreaking Ferrari crash</a> at Monterey before touching on the Dodge Viper powered <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/16/monterey-2009-fisker-karma-devon-gtx-lap-laguna-seca/">Devon GTX</a> and its screaming lap at Laguna Seca. <br />
<br />
Actual news starts with talk of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/quick-spin-hyundai-equus-is-a-high-horse-looking-for-its-praeto/">Hyundai Equus coming to the United States</a>, moves on to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/report-vw-ceo-confirms-phaeton-will-return-to-america-doesnt/">Volkswagen Phaeton's supposed return</a> to the North American market, and then to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/pics-and-details-aplenty-spyker-c8-aileron-spyder/">Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder</a>. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/acura-drops-more-details-and-pics-aplenty-of-the-new-zdx/">Acura's ZDX tickles (or not) our design eyes</a>, and then we wrap up with some of your questions. Thanks for the new reviews at the Autoblog Podcast iTunes page, as well as taking the time to <a href="http://www.podtrac.com/audience/start-survey.aspx?pubid=JRJrA-gkKy4$&amp;ver=standard">fill out our survey</a>. The feedback to our <strong>Podcast at Autoblog Dot Com</strong> address has been great, too, so keep it coming... see you next week! <br />

<br />Some of us weren't able to attend the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/2009+Monterey+Historics/">Monterey Historic races</a> over the weekend, but the first thing we heard once the laptop spooled up was that a very expensive Ferrari 250 TR smacked into a bunch of tires at Laguna Seca. This has turned into the crash heard 'round the world for a few simple reasons. Make that thirty four reasons, to be exact. That's right Ferrari only made 34 250 Testa Rossas from 1956 to 1961. Actually, let's just make that 21 reasons, as the 250 TR is the preferred version of the car, and only 19 customer cars and 2 racers were built between 1958 and 1959. And while a 1957 250 Testa Rossa just sold this past May for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/18/ferrari-250tr-sells-for-record-breaking-12-2-million-at-rm-auct/">$12,200,000</a>, making it the most expensive car, well, <em>ever </em>-- the 1958 TR that cashed this weekend is "only" worth about $8 million. <br /><br /><span style="MARGIN-TOP: 7px; FLOAT: left; MARGIN-RIGHT: 10px"><script> digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Multi_million_Ferrari_250_TR_crashing_at_Monterey_Video'; </script><script src=" http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span>Our own <em>meraviglioso</em> photographer Drew Philips had Nikon in hand near Laguna's famed Corkscrew and was able to capture the tragic <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/monterey-2009-ferrari-250-tr-gets-airborn-makes-friends-with-t/">off-track excursion</a> -- which is why we have these amazing photographs. In fact, Autoblog reader James Iovino was so smitten with Drew's work that he took all the individual photos and video-ized them. Which is not only a word we just made up, but pretty dang cool to watch. That is if watching a near-priceless Ferrari jump across gravel and slam into a bunch of dirty old tires can ever be cool. But hey, at least the TR got beat up on a race track instead resting in a garage during an earthquake. Besides, everything ought to buff right out. Full "video" <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/video-sort-of-multi-million-dollar-ferrari-250-tr-crashing-at/">after the jump</a>. <em>Thanks again to James Iovino for his handiwork!</em> <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics">Ferrari 250TR Crash at the Monterey Historics</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ferrari-250tr-crash-at-the-monterey-historics/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/250trcrash_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/video-sort-of-multi-million-dollar-ferrari-250-tr-crashing-at/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO (sort of): Multi-million dollar Ferrari 250 TR crashing at Monterey Historics</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/video-sort-of-multi-million-dollar-ferrari-250-tr-crashing-at/">VIDEO (sort of): Multi-million dollar Ferrari 250 TR crashing at Monterey Historics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. <p>We're tying to figure out which is the greater nightmare scenario. On one side, you have a collector who had his ultra-rare and extremely valuable classic Ferrari stolen. On the other, you have another collector who had the same Ferrari seized by state troopers. One car, two collectors, and one very unfortunate set of circumstances.</p>
<p>The car in question is a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series 1 Cabriolet, one of only 40 made. It was owned by a collector in Switzerland until it was stolen from a warehouse in Spain in 1993. The owner refused to collect compensation from the car's insurers, certain as he was that such a rare vehicle would turn up sooner or later. Fast forward fifteen years to the residence of Paul Hallingby in Sharon, Connecticut, where the Motor Vehicle Fraud Task Force of the Connecticut State Police showed up to take possession of the car. Hallingby, who paid over half a million for the car, now worth millions, is reportedly cooperating with the authorities. However, few details are known about the car's whereabouts in the intervening years except that it is believed to have been smuggled into the country through New Jersey where it was given a false Vehicle Identification Number. Hallingby is surely devastated, but the collector in Switzerland must be elated to be reunited with his baby after fifteen years.</p>
