Ferrari Enzo successor to churn out 920 horsepower, weigh 2,500 pounds

A year-and-a-half-ago we heard that the model to replace the Ferrari Enzo was peeking over the fence at the Bugatti Veyron for inspiration. Then we heard, nearly one year ago, that this Ferrari would also be a hybrid. Add those two ingredients to a 7.3-liter V12 and stir in Ferrari's talk of light weight, and the resulting supercar will be a 920-peak-horsepower celestial stallion that weighs just 2,500 pounds, according to a report in Automobile.

The V12 will be responsible for 800 of those horses, 100 more than the 599 replacement, the F620, that will use a 6.2-liter version of the same V12 and that we'll see at the Geneva Motor Show in early March. The supplemental 120 hp will be provided by a KERS hybrid setup.

The carbon fiber body is expected to hold largesse down to around 2,500 pounds, which - if all of these numbers come true - would mean a supercar that weighs 500 pounds less than 651-hp Enzo, and about the same as the 2,546-pound, track-only FXX, but that has about 100 more ponies. If all goes to plan we'll see it in the fall - until it starts moving, at least, when we'll just have to listen for the sonic booms.

The last time Ferrari's exclusive Corse Clienti program made an appearance at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was back in 2008. At the time, the FXX was the only race car in the Corse Clienti stable, but the 599XX joined the party for the program's return to Monterey this year.

A trio of FXXs and no less than seven 599XXs-almost a quarter of the total produced by Ferrari -took to the track last weekend, their high-revving 6.0L V12s echoing throughout the surrounding hills.

Ferrari FXX worse for wear after incident at Laguna Seca

It was Sunday morning at the Ferrari Racing Days at Laguna Seca, and the Corse Clienti cars were out on track when corners workers began waving the black flag to bring all the drivers into the pits. Everyone came in, save for one of the three FXXs.

Moments later, we confirmed our fears: the driver had gone off track at the Corkscrew and stuffed the nose of the FXX into the tire wall.

We don't know exactly what went wrong, but fortunately, the damage to the car seemed fairly minor and not serious enough to have hurt the driver. For the most part, it looked like the car will just need new front bodywork, and we wouldn't be surprised if it was ready in time for its next scheduled outing next month in Montreal. You can get a closer look at the damaged FXX in the high-res gallery below.

If you're ~~lucky~~ wealthy enough to own one of Ferrari's retired works Formula One machines, the automaker's F1 Client department takes care of maintenance and preparation of your historic racer, whether it be Nigel Mansell's ex-F190, Michael Schumacher's championship-winning F2001 or any number of pedigreed prancing ponies.

This week, the crew brought 10 of its most prized possessions out to the Nürburgring so current owners could spend some quality time behind the wheel. And the open wheelers weren't the only exotic wares in Germany. Four of the Enzo-based FXXs and 15 of the newer 599XXs were on hand, each track-only variant equipped with cutting-edge technologies that the Maranello boffins are experimenting with for future products. The "owners" of these XX models are essentially paying for the privilege of being Ferrari beta testers, but to our eyes, there are worse ways to spend a few days at the Green Hell.

2010 Ferrari Challenge at MMP: Ferrari FXX is king of the track

We were pretty impressed after initially watching the Ferrari F430 Challenge cars turn laps at Miller Motorsports Park this past weekend. After all, each of the cars boasts a 490 horsepower V8 and is set up specifically for racing. You can imagine that they're quite capable of turning insanely quick laps. Then a trio of FXXs took to the track and our definition of "fast" was altered forever.

Despite the fact that it will never turn a competitive lap, the Ferrari FXX is a brutally impressive racecar. The second generation Evoluzione version (pictured above), is Ferrari's most advanced GT car ever built with an 860 horsepower V12, a sequential gearbox that can perform shifts in just 60 milliseconds and a curb weight of just over 2,500 pounds. We might have preferred the beauty of the 599XX, but there was no doubt which car was the most capable of the lowest lap times.

In addition to our photos of the FXXs in the pit lane garages, we also came away from the weekend with plenty of shots of the cars on track. Have a look for yourself in the high-res gallery below.

2010 Ferrari Challenge at MMP: A look inside the Corse Clienti garages

Oh, to be wealthy. We're not talking about slightly rich, either. We're talking about having your own Ferrari racecar with factory support wealthy. Such a program actually exists, known as Corse Clienti (translated from Italian as "Racing Clients"). Imagine showing up to the racetrack with your car already there, which was flown in from the Ferrari factory earlier that week. There's no need to to get the car prepared, as Ferrari's very own mechanics are already on the job. Just sit back and relax until it's your time to get on the track, then hop in and take off.

The Ferrari 599XX, the latest member of the Corse Clienti stable, is brand new for this year and only made its debut at Homestead-Miami Speedway last month. We were eager to see them up close, and the first thing we did upon arriving at Miller Motorsports Park on Saturday morning was to go looking for the Corse Clienti cars. It didn't take long to find them, as they were all safely stored in the garages along pit row. There were no less than seven 599XXs, plus an additional three FXXs as a bonus.

In person, the 599XX is a sight to behold. It's not nearly as dramatic looking as the FXX, but that's a good thing in our opinion. In fact, it's one of the most beautiful modern racecars we've ever seen. Unlike the FXX, which seems to be a little rough around the edges, the 599XX has beautifully crafted details both inside and out. For instance, the inside of the door has "599XX" worked into the design of the carbon fiber, and the interior actually seems like a fairly hospitable place to be. The engine bay, like all other Ferraris, is a work of art, and even the functional aspects of the car like the splitters, winglets and diffuser all have an aesthetic appeal.

Automotive records can be funny things. While everyone seems to be interested in knowing what vehicle is the quickest, fastest, most expensive or rarest, there always seems to be plenty of dissent when one automaker claims its product takes the coveted prize away from another. Such is the case with the Ultima GTR720.

There's no doubting that both the Ferrari FXX and the Ultima GTR are fast cars. Which car is actually faster around a race track, though, is currently up for debate. The track in question is the Dunsfold aerodrome circuit, better known to many as the Top Gear test track. Not long ago, the crew from TG invited one Stig impersonator by the name of Michael Schumacher in the super high-test Ferrari racer to take a lap around its circuit, and the tame racing driver managed to set a new record at one minute 10.7 seconds.

Here's where the mine-is-bigger-than-yours part comes in. Ultima reportedly contacted Top Gear to let them know its car could go 'round the track faster than the aforementioned Prancing Horse, but the show apparently never responded. Taking matters into its own hands, then, Ultima borrowed the track for itself and is claiming to have completed a lap in one minute 9.9 seconds - less than one full tick quicker than the Ferrari, but quicker nonetheless. Plus, Ultima says, the GTR720 was both cheaper and fully road legal while the £1 million FXX is a track-only proposition.

From the looks of it, edo competition seems to have run out of supercars to modify. The high-end tuning firm has already tweaked pretty much every mainstream supercar, and have decided to have a second go at such exotica as the Ferrari Enzo. The German tuner's latest version of the ultimate Prancing Horse is dubbed the FXX Evolution and is essentially a road-going version of the FXX Evoluzione race car offered to Ferrari's special Corse Clienti program. Does a street legal Ferrari FXX sound familiar? You might remember that edo competition previously took an FXX and made it street legal (at least in Germany).

So what justifies the FXX name on this particular Enzo? For starters, 840 horsepower. Displacement of the V12 has been bumped from 6.0 to 6.3-liters, and new camshafts, titanium valve springs and connecting rods, new cylinder heads, and a high-flow exhaust system have all been added to provide the 180 horsepower increase. Sans mufflers, the FXX Evolution matches its racing counterpart's 860 horsepower. Edo competition also managed to shed 220 lbs from the car, decrease shift times to 60 milliseconds (also matching the race car), and install an FIA-spec adjustable suspension system. Finally, the exterior gets adjustable rear winglets and a new rear fascia with relocated exhaust tips.

Edo competition is offering a conversion package to all Enzo owners that includes a test day with an instructor, mechanics, data logging, transport and hospitality. Cost? The company doesn't list a price, but we'll just assume it's suitably outrageous. Full details can be found after the jump, and check out the high-res gallery below.

No supercar left behind: edo competition modifies Ferrari FXX to be street legal

It seems that edo competition is determined that no supercar be left untouched. They've developed upgrades for the Porsche Carrera GT, Maserati MC12 Corsa, Ferrari Enzo, and now they've got their hands on a Ferrari FXX racecar. They claim to have made the car road legal by installing a new windshield, hand brake and all necessary lighting. A new suspension system with adjustable compression and damping and a modified exhaust system have also been fitted. We thought more would have been required to make the switch from race car to road car, but judging from the photos they obviously have no qualms about driving this car on the street.

2 of 3 Ferrari FXX Evoluziones delivered to Hong Kong

We're not quite sure to make of this, but apparently of the 29 hand-selected participants from the Ferrari FXX development program, only three opted (or were deemed worthy) to continue with the even more exclusive FXX Evoluzione.

The progression of the previous initiative revolves around an even more extreme derivative of the Enzo. The FXX Evoluzione, as we reported back in October of last year, features a heavily revised variable aerodynamics package and advanced electronics, channeling 860 horsepower from the developmental supercar's 6.3-liter V12 with its atmospheric 9500 rpm redline. Of the three FXX Evoluziones made, two are heading to Hong Kong, with the remaining third example being presented to an unspecified European client.

UPDATE: We've been informed that while only three brand new examples of the FXX Evoluzione were built, most (if not all) of the original 29 FXXs have been retrofitted to Evoluzione spec. Thanks to tipster SPHFerrari for the correction.

Evey year automakers spend considerable amounts of money creating the most extreme racing cars to edge out their competition on the track. Unfortunately, lust-worthy as they are, those competition machines are rarely available to the common consumer to buy. That's where homologation regulations come into play.

The Maserati MC12 campaigns in the FIA GT Championship. In order to enter the championship, which the team took in 2005, Maserati fabricated and offered 50 vehicles to the public. But as devastatingly fast as the roadgoing MC12 was, some customers wanted more. So Modena rolled out 12 examples of the MC12 Corsa (a.k.a. Versione Corse) to satisfy the needs of its most loyal, track-obsessed clients. Based closely on the GT1 racing version, the MC12 Corsa packs a mammoth 6-liter V12 producing 744 horsepower - 121 more than the roadgoing supercar. The Versione Corse compared to the Ferrari FXX: both of them were based on the Ferrari Enzo, both were offered in limited numbers, both were maintained for their best clients by the factory, and most importantly, neither were certified for road use. However, one German customer managed to get his MC12 Corsa certified for street use, and that solitary example is now up for sale. Illustrating the point that depreciation does not apply to the top echelons of the supercar market, the minimum bid on this unique MC12 Corsa is 1.45 million euros - 45% higher than the original sale price from the factory, and it's sure to sell for more than that when the hammer finally drops.

Upcoming Ferrari supercars based on FXX and Millechili concept

Since the epically fast Enzo supercar finished its limited production run, the 430 Scuderia has been left to uphold the mantle as Ferrari's fastest. But as amazing as the Scuderia's performance is, outrunning every previous Ferrari around the company's Fiorano test track, it only goes to show what Maranello is capable of: If they can do this with their erstwhile "entry-level" V8 sportscar, what do they have in store for the Enzo's successor?

Emerging reports suggest that Ferrari could go one (or both) of two ways with its next range-topper. One approach is reportedly being based on the Millechili concept, which as you'll recall was essentially a chopped-down Enzo crafted out of cardboard and plastic holding the promise of environmentally-friendly specs. The production vehicle is tipped to be based on the F430's platform - remember that the 288 GTO and F40 were based on modified 308 underpinnings - but feature a 600hp V10 in a lightweight 1000kg package, with a lengthened wheelbase of around 104 inces, a $500,000 price tag and a production run of 300.

While reports suggest that a second supercar could appear based on the FXX development program, we think it far more likely that one vehicle will prevail, borrowing on themes and components from both the Millechili and the FXX test-bed.

Thanks to sites like eBay Motors, cars are trading hands over the internet all the time. But seeing a Ferrari FXX for sale online is a considerably rarer sight. The FXX, for those unacquainted, is the super-Enzo that Ferrari rolled out as a dynamic test bed for developing new components for use in future supercars. Only 30 were made, each sold to hand-picked clients from among the company's best customers for the $2 million privilege of being a client test driver for Maranello.

The owner in Yokohama, Japan, evidently opted not to re-ante for the FXX Evoluzione program, and is selling his FXX online in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The 15-day auction, being conducted by our reader Japarabia who tipped us off to the sale, is holding at 14 million UAE Dirhams (about $3.8 million) with less than a day to go.

Crazy rich guy attempts to legalize Ferrari FXX for the street

Hey, wait a minute - we thought you couldn't actually purchase the Ferrari FXX, let alone take one out to cavort on the streets of Switzerland. The way it was originally explained, people with 2.5 million dollars to dispose of could purchase the privelege to plant their hindquarters in the driver's seat for Maranello-sanctioned track events. You've got to have some serious juice to get an FXX to begin with, and then to get it legalized for use in Switzerland takes even more pull. When we say "crazy rich" we don't mean nutty with lots of money. "Crazy rich" in this instance means Scrooge McDuck style swimming in dubloons. Looking in the background of these pictures, you can see lesser vehicles fleeing for their lives. The FXX is keeping a particularly close eye on a tasty Fiat at one point. What's apparently going down in the photos is an FXX getting legally tagged for street driving after being gone over by inspectors in Zurich. The price of the inspection and tags was reportedly around $250,000, a mere ten percent of the initial cost. With an FXX as your personal car, you won't have to worry about blending in, and we must say it's refreshing to see a Ferrari in a color besides Rosso Corsa.

Maserati finally delivers: MC12 Versione Corse in Bologna

Although it showed the first car in Madrid back in May, Maserati is finally delivering MC12 Corsas and it took the occasion of the Bologna Motor Show to unveil the first customer car. In case you don't remember, the Versione Corse takes the basic MC12 and kicks it up a notch. Maserati is only building a dozen of these Fabergé eggs for special customers on a "build to order" basis. Neither fish nor fowl, the Corsa won't go through the certification process to make it road legal, nor will it qualify for any existing racing series. Similar to Ferrari's FXX, with which it shares a lot of hardware, the Corsa will essentially be a very fast, very rare, and very expensive trackday car.

For your $1.275 million, buyers will not only get exclusive bodywork for their Enzo derivative, but many mechanical upgrades including a horsepower bump from 600 in the standard MC12 to 755. Many will make comparisons to the Bugatti Veyron because of price and performance, but the Veyron is obviously a street legal car with an emphasis on luxury, albeit, very fast luxury. Although the Bug has that wicked 1,001 hp quad-turbo W16, it also has a lot more weight to push around. We see the MC12 Corsa being more of an Italian Saleen S7 TT. The Saleen almost matches the Maser with 750 hp in standard trim (Maserati can't match the 1,000 hp available with the optional Saleen Competition Package), although it also has to carry an additional 400 pounds worth of road regulations with it. We'll try to secure one of each for a comparison. Maybe bring along the Veyron and FXX for the heck of it. Can anybody hook us up? Please.

When Ferrari sold 29 FXXs last year, only very special fans of the prancing horse were invited to buy. After writing $1.8 million checks, each of those FXX owners were treated like Ferrari factory test drivers, their cars shuttled to European tracks by the manufacturer, maintained by Ferrari mechanics and, if desired, stored at the Maranello test track.

Because of all the exclusivity connected with FXX ownership, purchasers also had to sign contracts requiring Ferrari permission for any FXX to ever be sold.

That's why it's rather surprising to see another one show up on eBay. Possibly even more surprising is the odometer reading of only 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Who buys an FXX and never takes advantage of track time in Maranello? The eBay listing is by MDM Eurotics, but doesn't reveal the car's VIN or owner, so we may never know.

Bidding began at the bargain basement price of $750,000, and as of very early this morning, the price on the pristine supercar had reached $2.7 million. There's one clue to the owner's identity. The seller of this FXX may not be a car lover, but is definitely a shrewd investor.

How about one more FXX surprise? MDM Eurotics has not one but two FXXs for sale. The second also with only 10 km but is listed at €2.54 million ($3.34 million). Wow. Two FXXs in the same office. Hey, Boss? When are we getting ours?
