We love the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona. It's most definitely a classic, made famous in part by its appearance as Don Johnson's favored ride in the classic '80s television series Miami Vice... but we won't hold that against it.

The specific example you see above just crossed the block at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson extravaganza in Scottsdale, and it cleared a cool $495,000 after the buyer's commission was factored in. The 1972 Daytona features a sweet-sounding V12 engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Plus, it's brown, with a tan interior. Stunning. Check it out in our high-res image gallery above, and be sure to read through its official auction description below.

With examples from the 250 series fetching earth-shattering prices, the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 "Daytona" is quickly becoming a classic favorite. The wedge-shaped GT from the late 60s and early 70s was a clear separation from the bulbous models that proceeded it, and is today regarded as one of the definitive classic Ferraris of all time. But even among the 1,400+ built, some are more special than others.

For starters, this particular example - which is going up for auction in May under the auspices of Historics at Brooklands - is one of only 158 right-hand-drive models. But chassis #16531 is set apart from the other 157 by its fate once arriving in the UK.

Its first owner was HRH Charles, Prince of Wales, who only drove it for about a week before selling it. A few owners of varied stature owned the car since, until it appeared on the BBC's ever-popular car show Top Gear. You may recall the episode (twelfth in the fifth season) when James May set sail for Saint-Tropez from Portofino in a speedboat, while Richard Hammond took the coastal road in a Daytona? Well this is that very same car.

Resplendent in metallic blue, tan leather interior and Borrani wire wheels, this 365 GTB/4 has only 26,281 miles on the odometer, and was verified on the dyno shortly before the Top Gear filming to have lost none of the 352 horsepower with which it left the factory. It's a beauty. Details in the press release after the jump.

Any racing fan nut, automotive enthusiast or classic car nut worth his driving mocs knows the story of the Ford GT40. In the early 1960s Ferrari was on a six-time winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That's when Henry Ford II initiated proceedings to take over the Maranello sportscar-maker and racing team.

As the story goes, though, the notoriously intractable Enzo Ferrari didn't like the terms and canceled the deal at the 11th hour. Ford was left holding his hat and out of spite commissioned the GT40 with the explicit aim of knocking his Italian counterpart off his high (prancing) horse. The result was that, with the GT40, Ford won Le Mans four times in a row.

Now the Ferrari 250 GTO wasn't one of the cars that won at Le Mans during Ferrari's six-year reign. It was busy winning other categories during the same period. But that's alright, because the car in the video after the jump isn't a real GTO anyway. It is a real Ferrari, though: a 365 GTB/4 Daytona rebodied to look like a GTO. And it's not facing off against a GT40 either - that's actually the modern tribute, the 2005 Ford GT.

Do either of those facts mitigate the sight of seeing these cars take to the mountain roads outside Malibu, California? Hardly. But don't take our word for it, follow the jump to watch the video for yourself and see Matt Farrah of The Smoking Tire take the joyride of his life.

While the iconic 250 series of 1960s-era Ferraris - including the GTO, California Spyder and Testa Rossa - continue to break records at auction, the models that followed are quickly catching up, as those who lusted after them in their wonder years are coming up with the cash to acquire them today. As with any great collector cars, the more perfect and more rare the specimen, the more it'll fetch at auction.

Case in point, three classic Ferraris hovering around the 40-year-old mark each sold for seven figures last week at the RM Auctions Amelia Island event in Florida. One example, a rare Daytona Spyder once owned by Edsel Ford II, brought in $1,017,500 - safely inside the $1-1.25 million estimate range. Another, an alloy-bodied 275 GTB/4 in stunning copper, which was purchased new by Luigi Chinetti and displayed at the 1967 New York Auto Show, went for $1,265,000 - a little short of its estimate. It was bested, however, by a meticulously-restored, concours-winning 275 that greatly exceeded its estimate with a $1,650,000 winning bid.

Along with the headline-catching Duesenbergs, these classic cavallinos helped RM achieve an 88% sale rate at Amelia Island, accounting for over $19 million in sales. Further details in the press release after the jump.

Ferrari celebrates the 40th anniversary of the iconic 365 GTB/4 Daytona this year. Well, sorta. While Lotus is marking its 60th anniversary a few years early, Ferrari decided to celebrate the Daytona's 40th a year late. Which makes some degree of sense when you consider that last year the company was pretty busy with its grand worldwide 60th anniversary celebrations.

On display at its show stand in Geneva this year, Ferrari had a spectacular specimen for all to see (and a nice Ferrari Daytona next to her), which we enjoyed photographing and you can enjoy viewing in the gallery at the bottom of this post. Meanwhile this past weekend, the company invited the owners of 20 Daytonas from around the world to the factory's Fiorano test track in Maranello, across the 330km "Circuito delle tre province" where Enzo Ferrari retired from racing, and on to the Mugello track (also owned by Ferrari) for the second annual Mugello Historic Festival. That's all very well and nice, but with Ferrari confirmed to bring a new model to the Paris show in October and test mules with distinctly Daytona-like headlights running around Italy, we can't help but wonder (and hope) if Maranello isn't planning a more enduring tribute to the iconic grand tourer.

Especially valuable were the rarest models to have come from Maranello. Because of the ridiculous values, many "lesser" Ferraris gave their chassis to be remodeled as those ultra rare versions. One such target was the Ferrari 365 GTS/4, aka the Daytona Spyder. With less than 100 Spyders produced in US form, Daytona coupes sometimes found their way into body shops and miraculously emerged as ragtops. With the real deal Spyders trading for well over a million bucks each, it was a pretty common conversion. But buyers caught on and the market eventually slumped and the need to chop the top died down. The market settled and the fakes were identified. But there has been a resurgence and original, unmolested Spyders are once agin commanding seven figures when they appear on the market. It doesn't happen very often, so when it does, it's noteworthy.

Well, noted Iowa Ferrari collector Dr. Jack Frost died recently, and his 1971 Ferrari Daytona Spyder (365 GTS/4) popped up on eBay. The miraculous thing about this particular Daytona is that it is not only a real Spyder, but it has never been titled. That makes it a brand new 1971 Daytona Spyder that has just 3,700 orginal miles. Interested? It gets better. The car was originally ordered by Bill Harrah of Bill Harrah's Modern Classic Motors exotic dealership. Harrah custom ordered the car in the current color after seeing the original Daytona Coupe prototype in the same combination. It is white with a red side stripe and the interior features black Daytona seats with red inserts. Quite striking. No other Spyder is believed to have left the factory similarly painted. After having some fun with it, Harrah sold it to Dr. Jack Frost, MD of Action Performance in 1976. Frost never titled it either and added a few more miles before he passed away. Bidding on this first eBay go-around just ended and the $1,335,400 top bid failed to meet the reserve. Hard to say what this unique vehicle might eventually bring, but rumor has it that price was about 50% shy of the mark.

Thanks for the tip, Adam!

[Source: eBay]
eBay find of the day: Dr. Jack Frost Ferrari Daytona Spyder originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Feb 2007 11:04:00 EST.
