The folks at IMAX have been responsible for turning out some pretty darn spectacular panoramic cinematic masterpieces, capturing nature's wonders from the depths of the ocean to the reaches of outer space. The production crews are now focusing their complex lenses on the earth's paved surfaces to capture some of mankind's most dazzling mechanical creations.

Maranello released these three images of a helicopter buzzing over Fiorano's surface, revealing only that they're shooting an IMAX special on Ferrari that will form one of the main attractions at the Ferrari theme park opening next year in Abu Dhabi. And here we thought Ferrari was shifting to aerospace. Oh well, one more reason to FedEx ourselves to the Emirates next year.

Ferrari is one of the few names with enough draw to make such a venture work, and Abu Dhabi is perhaps the only place in the world with enough real estate and wealthy patrons to keep it running. Hence the Ferrari theme park, which we've spoken of at length in years past, has laid the first brick of construction on the 2,500-acre Yas Island it will call home. Yesterday a "Foundation Stone Ceremony" was held on the site where a time capsule was buried containing a connecting rod and piston from the 2007 F1 World Champion Ferrari car, as well as the first rendering of the theme park that was commissioned.

For those who think Ferrari merely sold its brand to a construction company that will paint some old Disney rides Rossa Red, consider that Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo was on hand at the ceremony yesterday to press the flesh with fellow investors. Aside from being a theme park with various sorts of Ferrari-themed entertainment to enjoy (we call front car on the Enzo Coaster!), the facility will have its very own circuit built right in its center that will host driving schools, as well as the first Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix in 2009.

Thanks for the tip, Marc!

[Source: Ferrari]

Gallery: Ferrari Foundation Stone Ceremony

Continue reading Ferrari theme park lays the first stone... and it's red

Ferrari theme park lays the first stone... and it's red originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Nov 2007 13:57:00 EST. That was the year the magic started. It was the year that il commendatore, Enzo Ferrari, started selling the first cars that bore his name. Many world championships, street car accolades, and happy customers later, and the company is still going strong. And now that the calendar is showing 2007, it's time for Ferrari's 60th birthday celebration.

And apparently the Panamerican 20,000 run for the launch of the 599 went better than hoped for and has spawned a sequel. To commemorate this special occasion a road rally will be held, beginning in Abu Dhabi on January 28th and covering 6 different continents along the way. The participants should reach the finish line in Maranello at the end of June. Abu Dhabi is significant as a starting point because it is the site of the future Ferrari theme park and a pretty big market for the Italian firm's vehicles. After crossing 50 different countries, the racers will reach Maranello around June 24th.

As publicity stunts go, this is a doozy. Parading a bunch of Ferraris around the world sounds like our idea of a good time, but it will be educational too. After all, something has to go on those batons. So Ferrari will be showing off 60 of its most important automotive innovations. Things like aluminum pliers for disc brakes, the electric differential, and the F1 gearbox. And it's obvious these innovations have kept Ferrari ahead of the game all these years.

In fact, as they explained in the briefing that accompanied the relay race announcement, business is thriving. Running at almost full capacity, riding a new wave of popularity since the 599 GTB Fiorano was launched, the company again took the opportunity to deny rumors of a new entry-level model, despite continued reports to the contrary. We hope they have a passenger seat open when they hit the States.

Press release after the jump.
Continue reading Ferrari to embark on 50 country tour to celebrate 60th anniversary

Ferrari to embark on 50 country tour to celebrate 60th anniversary originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 17:05:00 EST.
