We've seen a lot of how-not-to videos over the years. How not to load your Porsche Carrera, tow your Chevrolet Corvette, rescue your truck from a frozen lake, and many more. It's also become clear that tow trucks frequently play a big part in these matters. Today's example is no different.

Hit the jump to see what happens when a tow truck attempts to return a tipped auto transporter to the upright position. Hint: It probably wouldn't have been posted to YouTube if it ended well.
Continue reading How not to flip a car carrier back over

How not to flip a car carrier back over originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 28 May 2011 20:02:00 EST.
The Carrera GT is among the most rare and exotic models Porsche has ever created. Production ceased way back in 2006, but if you want to pick up one of these five-year-old supercars, it will still cost you about $400,000 for the privilege. Having said that, if we owned a Carrera GT, we'd definitely handle it with white gloves on, and we would only trailer it in the most professional manner humanly possible.

Apparently not everyone is as careful with their rare exotic. The brief post-jump video features a beautiful silver Carrera GT that is being loaded onto a flatbed with a pair of unfastened planks that appear to be wood. We're with you if your immediate thought is, 'Why the heck would anyone do that?,' but apparently the 15 or so people standing around the pricey Porsche didn't feel compelled to tell the driver or the loaders. We've seen more careful packing of trucks crossing rivers on wood canoes in Bolivia. Hit the jump to watch on in horror.
The incorrect way to gauge your speed for a ramp jump - Click above to watch video after the, ahem, jump

Planning on attempting a ramp jump in an automobile? We have a tip for you: Don't use a Dacia 1310. Why? Apparently it can build up too much speed, causing you and your co-driver to overshoot your landing area. Either that, or you need to reconsider your high school math skills...

Check out this clip from a stunt performed in 1995. We believe it takes place in Romania, and we've also found reports that say both driver and co-driver were okay, which seems to be the case if you watch all the way through the end. That last bit is miraculous because the duo manage to soar quite a bit further than they anticipated. Strap in and come fly with us past the jump to view the clip.

A lesson in how NOT to tow - Click above to watch video after the jump

Sometimes you have to tow a car. It's generally not a big deal and most of us have been a tower or towee at some point. One rule of thumb when manning the car being towed - leave the keys in the ignition so you don't lock the steering wheel. If you fail to heed these words, as do the chaps you'll see after the break, you might ended up causing some serious damage to your <strike>modified </strike><strike>Subaru</strike> non-operational vehicle

The two gents riding in the Subaru seen in this video were very lucky they only managed to hurt the car. This adventure in towing could have gone way worse... click past the jump and watch the clip to see what we mean, but be warned there is some NSFW language involved.

How many bad drivers can you spot every day on your drive to work? Five? Ten? All of them? We feel your pain, and apparently the alarming truth is that one-in-five motorists - which, for those interesting in the gory details, equals roughly 38 million Americans - are unfit to drive on our nation's highways.

This data is according to a test administered by GMAC Insurance that asked motorists 20 questions taken straight from your local DMV's written driving test. About 20 percent of currently licensed drivers would have failed the test, and the average score of 76.2 percent is down slightly from that of 2009.

Some interesting factoids: Male drivers scored better than females on both average scores (78.1 percent male versus 74.4 percent female) and failure rates (24 percent female versus 18.1 percent male). New Yorkers ranked dead last (70 percent average score) and Kansas drivers ranked highest (82.3 percent average score). Want to know more? (Perhaps not...). Say you and three of your closest buddies find yourselves out for a leisurely Sunday cruise on your motorbikes, when you stumble upon the old schoolyard merry-go-round. Following an intense session of cerebral activity, and the obligatory drawing of straws, it is decided that all the necessary ingredients are on hand for a primitive recreation of the Gravitron. We know, it can feel like so long between carnival visits sometimes.

Moral of the story: First, if you are the guy in the red pants, it's officially time to begin the new friend hunt. Second, if you haven't yet found a use for motorcycles, open your mind, they really are very multifaceted. When was the last time you utilized your car to create a backyard, makeshift carnival ride? Wait, don't answer that, just hit the jump to watch the complete Moto-Go-Round experience. Thanks for the tip, Duy.

Justice has finally caught up with the driver of a BMW X5 who thought she could get away with playing Monster Jam in the parking lot of the local gym. You may recall the tale of Tripta Kaushal. Last October, the 62-year old driver was attempting to park her Bavarian SUV at Extreme Fitness. Instead of coming to a controlled stop, Kaushal launched her 'ute onto the row of parked cars across from her, backed off and then drove away. Luckily, the gym had parking lot surveillance, and police eventually nabbed the woman.

On Tuesday, Kaushal pleaded guilty to failing to report a collision, and was issued a $500 fine. Even better, the lady has been banned from driving between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., so you can bet your parking lot will be safe from dusk 'till dawn. The court also ordered her to pay restitution for the cars her X5 mounted last year. Makes us wonder what those poor folks were doing for transportation for the last five months.

We all know the crap-your-pants sensation that comes along with seeing one of the boys in blue when you're doing something you shouldn't. It's usually accompanied by a phobia-like aversion of the throttle and an over familiarity with the brakes at the same time. If you're tearing it up on four wheels, inducing plenty of stopping power mid-turn will just make you look a fool. But, as our intrepid hero found out, grabbing a handful of brake on your favorite Kawasaki ZX-6R will have you kneeling at the asphalt altar in a hurry. Despite this guy's impressive slide, he's no Tanner Foust. This CHP officer hasn't had it this easy since training. See what we mean after the jump.
Oh dear. See that big bad truck up above? It's about to jump over some dirt. The landing is not going to go well. How not well? According to our sources you are looking at $350,000 worth of truck. We're not modified truck experts, but we'd be willing to guess that the truck is worth substantially less than $350,000 after said jump. Speaking of jumps, you should make our jump to watch the video and then read the world's quickest technical break down of exactly what went wrong. Tip of the desert flap hat to Brad!
Continue reading Video: Leaping SEMA truck proves the meek and well engineered shall inherit the earth

Video: Leaping SEMA truck proves the meek and well engineered shall inherit the earth originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 19:00:00 EST. But wait, there's less. The plot synopsis involves everyone's least-favorite tight-laced trooper, Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and the smash-happy Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) reigniting their feud, but putting bad blood aside to defeat a "shared enemy." The movie will take place in Los Angeles and Mexico, and despite his better angels, the film's director Justin Lin is considering another installment before retiring the series. Fast and Furious is due to hit theaters June 5, 2009. Mark your calendars in anticipation, or avoidance.

[Source: Cinematical]
FF4 gets official name, plot details revealed originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 08:29:00 EST. The Japanese automaker revealed a new recall for the United States that affects 165,000 vehicles that could develop engine problems from a sealer material that may leak onto wires in the engine and cause them to snap. Multiple complaints about the problem have been filed at Honda HQ, though none have led to crashes or injuries.

The affected vehicles include the 2005 Acura RL, TL and TSX, the entire 2005 Honda Accord lineup (include the Accord Hybrid), 2005 Honda Odyssey and 2006 Honda Ridgeline. There are other recalls being announced in various markets around the world for the same problem, but Honda declined to reveal how large the scope of this recall is in raw numbers. Clearly, though, this is the same issue that sparked the giant recall in China. So, in total, we know this engine problem accounts for a recall affecting at least 693,406 vehicles wordwide, but likely more.

If you think your vehicle is affected, you can call Honda at (800) 999-1009 for more information.

[Source: Detroit News]
Engine problems lead Honda to recall 165,000 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Mar 2007 18:04:00 EST. One week ago the automaker announced it was distributing bonuses to every single one of its salaried and hourly workers, just to say thanks for helping the company reduce costs, improve quality and reduce the ranks. Today we learn that Ford President of the Americas Mark Fields has told his workforce in a weekly webcast that the company earned poor marks on its own internal report card. The poor marks resulted from missing sales targets and not cutting material costs enough in February. We were under the impression that successful cost cutting was one of the reasons for paying out at least $36 million dollars in bonuses to its workers.

We made the argument last week, and again in this week's podcasts, that we bet many Ford workers would much rather have their bonus money go back into the company to ensure all the right moves are made during these uncertain times and their jobs remain secure. This seems even more evident today in light of Ford's failing to meet its own targets for February. Those many millions could pay for the next niche vehicle that sparks a renaissance, or any number of things that could help save the company. Heck, it could pay for a Taurus SHO!

[Source: Detroit Free Press]
Ford earns poor marks on own internal report card originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Mar 2007 14:34:00 EST.
