Regardless of what it will be called, the successor to the Ferrari Enzo will be unveiled next week in Geneva, and like many other automakers, Ferrari will apparently be giving us a slow strip tease of the all-new hybrid supercar.

We've already seen a couple shadowy images of the car's face and rump, but the new shots - provided courtesy of the Ferrari Facebook page - are starting to show us some detail.

The only problem is that we don't exactly know what details we're looking at. In the shot above, that curvy, red real estate could belong to any number of body panels, while the second new teaser shows the Ferrari prancing horse logo with no indication of where on the car it's located.

Fortunately, there are just four days left until this new supercar makes its global debut, and Ferrari has promised more "hints" of the car on its website and official Facebook page.
Continue reading Ferrari begins releasing official teasers for new supercar

Ferrari begins releasing official teasers for new supercar originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Mar 2013 17:58:00 EST.
From recent spy shots to leaked information, we're starting to get a good idea about just how amazing the unnamed successor to the Ferrari Enzo will be, but now we've finally gotten to see some video of the car testing at the Fiorano Circuit in Italy. This video not only gives us an earful of the car's screaming engine and rumbling exhaust note, it also affords us a view of the car without its fish-face camouflage that it has been caught wearing recently.

The video shows the new supercar testing around the 12-turn, 1.877-mile track with an Enzo, and it is interesting to hear the differences between the 651-horsepower Enzo and its reportedly 950-hp hybrid successor. Scroll down to watch the newest Ferrari going through some track testing, and be sure to turn your speakers up.
Continue reading Ferrari F150 Enzo-successor takes some loud laps at Fiorano

Ferrari F150 Enzo-successor takes some loud laps at Fiorano originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Feb 2013 16:01:00 EST.
At a private showing in Maranello, a group of lucky souls got to sneak a peek at the upcoming successor to the Ferrari Enzo, which has been referred to as both the F70 and F150 (not that F-150). While we still don't get any name confirmation or a definitive idea (aside from spy shots) as to what the newest Ferrari supercar will look like, one of the attendees did manage to pass along some vital performance information about the car as well as production numbers that are said to be limited to just 499 units.

The report on Auto-Blog.com.mx confirms that the Enzo successor will utilize an 800-horsepower V12 paired with a hybrid KERS good for another 150 hp. The engine's peak power kicks in at a screaming 9,200 rpm, while peak torque (not divulged) will be available at just 1,000 rpm. That kind of power could be great in just about anything, but the report also says that this new Ferrari model will have a dry weight of just 2,799 pounds (about the same as the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S twins and just slightly more than a Mazda MX-5 Miata). Rumored speed times include a top speed of 229 miles per hour, and the ability to run from 0-60 mph in less than three seconds; doubling that speed takes an extra second.

We've already seen the car's carbon fiber chassis and now we're just waiting to see the production car in real life, but Ferrari has not announced when the car will be introduced.
Possible Ferrari F70/F150 specs emerge from private showings originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Feb 2013 10:44:00 EST.
Although we're still not really sure what Ferrari plans to call its long-awaited successor to the Enzo, we're certain that this is going to be one mean car. We've heard that it will be called the F150, F150 Italia and even the F70 over the last year and a half. Regardless of its name, this guppy-faced prototype you see above is Ferrari's answer to the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder with a rumored 900-horsepower hybrid powertrain.

Since the last time we saw this car testing, the only difference appears to be that the exhaust outlets now may be closer to production form, with dual pipes on each side sitting up higher in the fascia. Aside from that, these shots are much clearer and at a better angle allowing us to get an idea of what the final product might look like. We do see some of this car's details such as the headlight placement and shape similar to the 458 Italia and the massive brakes with drilled carbon ceramic rotors.

No word as to when we might see the production version of the car, but Ferrari did tease a couple photos of it last month and is much further along than spy shots we saw less than a year ago.
Ferrari Enzo successor caught testing again originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 09:16:00 EST.
On its web site, Ferrari has divulged a little more info about the supercar that will succeed the Ferrari Enzo. The Ferrari magazine reported that everything the Scuderia has learned in Formula One has gone into its soon-to-be-revealed animal, and this latest disclosure shows just how much that's true. We don't know its length or width, but Ferrari says one of the targets for the car was "a reduction in height and wheelbase to match that of the 458 Italia."

Rory Byrne, the Ferrari F1 designer that's been involved in 11 world championships for the team, has spent three years contributing to chassis development. That chassis will be laid up by hand in the company's F1 composites department, each chassis composed of different kinds of carbon fiber and cured in an autoclave, F1 monocoque-style. That's part of where the lighter weight and vastly heightened torsional and beam rigidity versus the Enzo comes from. Just behind the tub - and behind the driver's back - will be the batteries and fuel tank, again, just as on an F1 car.

The cockpit will be personalized to the driver in a way that is rare among road cars, with each seat made-to-measure for the driver and then set in a fixed position in the cabin. The steering wheel and pedal box will move to accommodate pilots. What's more, we're told that "the occupant's feet are at the same level as the driving position." That, and the angle of the seatback, will provide "an extraordinarily racy feeling."

An evolution of the 740-horsepower, 6.3-litre V12 currently found in the F12 Berlinetta will work with the latest HY-KERS and a double-clutch transmission. Ferrari says the powertrain makes the car quicker from 0-to-120 miles per hour, reduces emissions by 40 percent, and improves features like torque vectoring and brake force distribution.
Still no word on what it will be called, but specs like these, by any name, would be just as sweet.
Ferrari teases more specs on its Enzo successor originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Dec 2012 12:58:00 EST.
Contrary to the hopes of everyone attending the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, The Motor City will not stage the debutante ball of the successor the Ferrari Enzo. Before the Detroit show rumor, it was thought that we'd see the coupe, referred to as the F70, for the first time at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

The Geneva timeline makes more sense, seeing the amount and kind of camo the car is still wearing on roads around Maranello, as seen here caught by a man-on-the-street. Copious amounts of hard plastic cladding, the faux-shovel snout and miles of gaffer tape hide the body from view. If Detroit were a go, then we'd expect to see the hybrid supercar out somewhere with the cloth and canvas cladding the Italians switch to when D-Day is close. As it is, other than a new set of wheels, this looks like the same cladding we saw the car wearing in June, when it looked a lot more spiffy.

Or maybe not - Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo said earlier this year that "At the end of the year, we'll also be unveiling the new Enzo, a limited series model and our first-ever hybrid car." But we don't yet know whether Montezemolo is referring to a public unveiling, as at an auto show, or a private event for potential buyers. We have six weeks to find out whether the camo or the CEO has it right.
Ferrari F70 spotted in heavy camo around Maranello originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 16:31:00 EST.
Contrary to earlier reports, Ferrari maintains that it will not be showing the F70 supercar successor to the Enzo at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January. In fact, our sources say the launch rollout plans for the hybrid 920-horsepower exotic have not been finalized.

One scenario would have a launch separate from major auto shows in order to maximize publicity. Another factor in the decision not to show the F70 in Detroit is a desire not to step on the launch at the show of the all-new Maserati Quattroporte. Both Maserati and Ferrari are owned by the Fiat group.
Ferrari F70 won't show up in Detroit after all originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 10:02:00 EST.
We expected the successor to the Ferrari Enzo, for now a model referred to as the F70, to be the showstopper of the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Finally seeing the real car will be good news whenever it happens, but even better news is that Inside Line has just reported that the F70 will be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

We have no idea what the gigundously powerful coupe will look like - the rendering above is the work of KGP Photography, whose spy shooters have shot quite a number of prototypes hidden under enormous amounts of camo. We do know it will have a carbon fiber chassis with a Formula One-style build developed by one of the key players in the F1 team - the chassis will be 20-percent lighter than the Enzo's, yet stiffer. Within it will be something like 900 horsepower unleashed from a mid-mounted V12 assisted by an evolution of the energy-regenerating HY-KERS unit. Weight for the whole car has been rumored to come in a snort-inducing 2,500 pounds.

Suddenly, January in Detroit isn't looking quite so bleak.
Ferrari Enzo successor F70 to be unveiled at 2013 Detroit Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Oct 2012 17:45:00 EST.
Ferrari is quick to point out that while output across its lineup has jumped roughly 100 horsepower in the last four years, fuel consumption and emissions are down nearly 30 percent. Such gains in efficiency are made through a holistic approach, including engine tuning, aerodynamics, tires, and so on.

A a good part of any gain in efficiency can be made through the use of exotic materials and lightweight structural components. With the F70 Enzo successor still in development, the folks from Maranelo chose Paris to display a carbon-fiber architecture, apparently for the limited-run roadcar. Developed with help from Ferrari's Formula One Chief Designer, Rory Byrne, the carbon fiber structure looks to support a mid-engined layout and provides spaces for upward-swinging doors (see: Enzo butterfly doors).

Ferrari says that it sought for alternatives to conventional carbon fiber manufacturing techniques. Instead, methods and materials were shared by Scuderia Ferrari, using four different types of carbon fiber - all hand-laminated.

According to Ferrari, the chassis of the limited-run vehicle is 20 percent lighter than the Enzo, even with the added weight necessitated by hybrid components (though it isn't clear if the completed car will also be 20 percent lighter). All we know is, few automakers can get us excited about a substructure like Ferrari.
Continue reading Ferrari's Enzo successor laid bare with carbon fiber chassis display

Ferrari's Enzo successor laid bare with carbon fiber chassis display originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 09:29:00 EST. Between the development of the Acura NSX, the next-generation Nissan GT-R, the long line of lusty Lamborghini concepts and McLaren tinkerings, we may very well be on the doorstep of a golden age of exotic engineering. But few of those offerings send us licking our chops quite so quickly as the successor of the legendary Ferrari Enzo throne. Christened the F70 internally, the machine reportedly boasts a hybrid drivetrain brawny enough to bolt the Italian menace to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds.

Odds are there's a healthy V12 mounted midship, and if the whispers we hear happen to be true, the F70 will be able to saunter up to a top speed of 250 mph. Our spy photo friends have produced a pair of renderings for us based on their own surreptitiously snapped images that help cut through the awful body cladding we've seen attached to the test cars frolicking about Europe at the moment.

If the production car looks even remotely as attractive as these sketches, the world is about to become a much sexier place. With lots of 458 in the front and hints of F40 in that engine cover, there's plenty to get excited about here. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until the 2013 Geneva Motor Show before we see the real deal.
This is what the Ferrari F70 might really look like originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 15:53:00 EST.
A report in Car And Driver decrees that the final design for the successor to the Ferrari Enzo, which is being called by its internal code F70 for now, has been established. Whereas the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta was a collaboration between Pininfarina and Ferrari's in-house studio led by Flavio Manzoni, the F70 is the sole creation of the in-house team.

The designs that CD calls on to describe the F70's so-called "three-arc" body are the Millechili concept of 2007, the Enzo-based P4/5 and F430-based P4/5 Competizione commissioned by James Glickenhaus, and the rear-end treatment of the Pagani Zonda. That appears to cover a lot of design ground, but it does fit the evolution of the line, namely in having a carbon fiber coupe whose width is emphasized and whose three-dimensional forms are reinforced by compact, filled-out forms with harder edges. The web site Carpassion.it has rendered its take on the F70, and while it's pretty ornate in a Speed Racer way it's also pretty bleeping cool.

Within those forms are said to be active and passive aerodynamic aids, and complex airflow venting that begins as early as the headlight surrounds and that is being called "revolutionary" by Ferrari designers. Underneath, and no less revolutionary, will be a carbon fiber chassis that keeps weight down to roughly 2,650 pounds and a HY-KERS-equipped V12 that can motivate proceedings with something like 900 horsepower combined. With a promise that it will be seen this year, we should soon be able to get away from the mules and onto the masterpiece.
Ferrari finalizes design for Enzo successor originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Jun 2012 08:59:00 EST.
Business has been good for Ferrari. Thanks in no small part to expanding its activities in developing markets, the racing team turned automaker raked in 556 million euros in revenues to generate 42.1 million euros in profit in the first quarter of this year alone - an increase of 13.2 and 17.2 percent, respectively. Those figures are driven by increased sales that amounted to 1,733 units produced and delivered in the first quarter out of an exciting model range that includes the 458 Italia and Spider, the recently revised California, the innovative FF and the brand-new F12 Berlinetta. But the House that Enzo built is not about to stop there.

Buried deep within the company's financial report (which you can delve into after below the fold should you be so inclined) comes confirmation direct from the company's affable chairman (and possible next Italian prime minister) Luca di Montezemolo: "At the end of the year, we'll also be unveiling the new Enzo, a limited series model and our first ever hybrid car."

So there we have it, straight from the proverbial lion's mouth and in no uncertain terms. Before we flip the calendar to 2013, we'll have the latest in the long line of earth-shattering supercars that started with the 288 GTO, continued with the legendary F40, through the open-top F50 and on to the radical Enzo. And yes, it will be a hybrid, coupling an electric motor to a revised version of the V12 in the new F12 Berlinetta, as Ferrari revealed at the Beijing Motor Show.
Continue reading Montezemolo confirms new Ferrari Enzo hybrid by year's end

Montezemolo confirms new Ferrari Enzo hybrid by year's end originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2012 16:18:00 EST.
The arrival of any new Ferrari is bound to be anticipated eagerly by legions of fans around the world, but few more keenly than the successor to the famed Enzo.

Following in a line that dates back to the 288 GTO, through the F40, the F50 and most recently the Enzo, the new top-of-the-line hypercar from Maranello is now well on the road to readiness. We're told to expect its arrival in less than a year from now at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but while endless speculation has filled the void until now, we've now got our first batch of spy shots showing - to some extent, anyway - what Ferrari is working on.

While the widened 458 test mule in these spy shots is wearing a hideously humorous hodgepodge of sheetmetal and body cladding evidently thrown together in a back room in Maranello (with the lights off), we're told this is not an actual prototype for the Enzo successor - sure to wear a different name, but referred to internally as project F70 - but rather a rolling test bed for components that will make up the finished product.

That is expected to include an uprated (and backwards-turned) version of Ferrari's new 6.2-liter V12 from the F12 Berlinetta, producing more power and augmented by a hybrid electric assist. Despite the added hybrid bigs, the F70 is still said to be light in weight, and it will be sent gunning for the Bugatti Veyron with a targeted 0-60 run in under 2.5 seconds and a top speed in excess of 250 mph.
Ferrari Enzo successor had better look better than this test mule originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Apr 2012 12:30:00 EST.
A year-and-a-half-ago we heard that the model to replace the Ferrari Enzo was peeking over the fence at the Bugatti Veyron for inspiration. Then we heard, nearly one year ago, that this Ferrari would also be a hybrid. Add those two ingredients to a 7.3-liter V12 and stir in Ferrari's talk of light weight, and the resulting supercar will be a 920-peak-horsepower celestial stallion that weighs just 2,500 pounds, according to a report in Automobile.

The V12 will be responsible for 800 of those horses, 100 more than the 599 replacement, the F620, that will use a 6.2-liter version of the same V12 and that we'll see at the Geneva Motor Show in early March. The supplemental 120 hp will be provided by a KERS hybrid setup.

The carbon fiber body is expected to hold largesse down to around 2,500 pounds, which - if all of these numbers come true - would mean a supercar that weighs 500 pounds less than 651-hp Enzo, and about the same as the 2,546-pound, track-only FXX, but that has about 100 more ponies. If all goes to plan we'll see it in the fall - until it starts moving, at least, when we'll just have to listen for the sonic booms.
Ferrari Enzo successor to churn out 920 horsepower, weigh 2,500 pounds originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 20:03:00 EST.
