<br />
This year's annual Eyes on Design awards were presented at the end of press days for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show</a> on Tuesday. Given out for the best production and concept car designs that debuted at the show, and voted on by an esteemed panel of actual car designers, this year's award for best production vehicle design went to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/15/2014-cadillac-elr-detroit-2013/">2014 Cadillac ELR</a>. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/14/2014-chevrolet-c7-corvette-stingray-detroit-2013/">2014 Chevrolet Corvette</a>, which was the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/16/editors-choice-top-five-detroit-auto-show-debuts/">show favorite among <em>Autoblog</em> editors</a>, apparently did not impress the Eyes on Design judges enough with its all-new vent-festooned design.<br />
<br />
The award for best concept design was actually split as a tie among the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/15/nissan-resonance-concept-detroit-2013/">Nissan Resonance</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/15/ford-atlas-concept-detroit-2013/">Ford Atlas</a> concepts. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/13/ford-fusion-lexus-lf-lc-win-eyes-on-design-awards/">Last year's winners</a> were the 2013 Ford Fusion and the Lexus LF-LC concept.<br />
<br />
The Eyes on Design organization also presented a new honor this year called the Catalyst Award to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bob+lutz/">Bob Lutz</a>, former Vice Chairman of General Motors. Lutz is reported to have given a defense of design in his acceptance speech, arguing that advancements in quality across the industry as a whole have made good design a key differentiator for buyers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/18/cadillac-elr-nissan-resonance-and-ford-atlas-win-eyes-on-design/">Cadillac ELR, Nissan Resonance and Ford Atlas win Eyes on Design awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 18 Jan 2013 09:29:00 EST. <a href="/2012/07/18/ex-bmw-styling-boss-chris-bangle-gets-lifetime-achievement-from/#continued"><img alt="Eyes On Design honors Chris Bangle" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2012/07/eyes-on-design-honor-chris-bangle001-opt.jpg" style="margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px; width: 628px; height: 420px; " /></a><br />
	<br />
	Even to casual car enthusiasts, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/chris+bangle/">Chris Bangle</a> needs no introduction. One of the most controversial designers of all time, the "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bangle+butt/">Bangle Butt</a>" redesign of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/7+series/">BMW 7 Series</a> is still hotly debated even today. Introduced in 2002 during Bangle's tenure as chief designer at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/">BMW</a>, the E65 7 Series only began to develop Bangle's new design language for BMW, later dubbed "flame surfacing." Whether you love or hate his work - and there seems to be no middle ground - the man's influence is undeniable. Many manufacturers have since borrowed aspects of his designs for their own vehicles.</p>
<p>
	<br />
	It's only fitting, then, that the 25th anniversary <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/eyes+on+design/">Eyes On Design</a> car show should award Bangle its prestigious Lifetime Design Achievement Award. Held each summer at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House just outside Detroit in Grosse Pointe Shores, Eyes On Design is a real insiders club, in that only those designers who have won the Lifetime Design Achievement Award are eligible to vote.<br />
	<br />
	While <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/14/former-bmw-lightning-rod-chris-bangle-to-receive-lifetime-design/">we knew Bangle would be receiving this award</a> from his peers since November 2011, the actual ceremony was held this past weekend at the Detroit Yacht Club. Retired <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> designer Jack Telnack, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gm/">General Motors</a> design chief <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ed+welburn/">Ed Welburn</a>, and Ford director of exterior design <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Joel+Piaskowski/">Joel Piaskowski</a> were among those who spoke. Bangle joins a pretty famous crew of past award winners, including Italian design legends <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Giugiaro/">Giorgetto Giugiaro</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/07/03/legendary-designer-sergio-pininfarina-passes-away/">recently deceased</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/pininfarina/">Sergio Pininfarina</a>, William "Willy" G. Davidson of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/harley-davidson/">Harley-Davidson</a>, and former <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chrysler/">Chrysler</a> and GM "car guy in chief" <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bob+lutz/">Bob Lutz</a>.<br />

<br />
Every year at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>, the Eyes on Design awards honors the best designs among production vehicles and concepts debuting that year. Unlike, say, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/09/hyundai-elantra-range-rover-evoque-named-2012-north-american-ca/">North American International Car and Truck of the Year awards</a>, the only vehicles eligible for an Eyes on Design award are the ones that introduce themselves to the world - well, really just North America - in Detroit.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2012/01/lexus-lf-lc-eyes-on-design.jpg" style="margin: 4px; width: 305px; height: 203px; float: right;" />What's particularly interesting is that the judges for these two awards (one for production vehicles and the other for concepts) are all active or retired designers themselves, so they know a little something about the topic. This year's group includes, among others, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/">Volkswagen</a> head of design Walter de Silva, President and CEO of SRT Ralph Gilles, and GM Vice President of Global Design Ed Welburn.<br />
<br />
This year, the Eyes on Design awards were handed out to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/09/2013-ford-fusion-detroit-2012/">2013 Ford Fusion</a> in the production category and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/09/lexus-lf-lc-concept-detroit-2012/">Lexus LF-LC</a> in the concept category. The Fusion's fellow finalists were the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/3+series/">2013 BMW 3 Series</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/08/2013-cadillac-ats-debuts-in-detroit-diesel-engine-confirmed/">2013 Cadillac ATS</a>, while the LF-LC eked out a W over the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/09/chevrolet-tru-140s-concept-is-the-meaner-cruze/">Chevrolet Tru 140S</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/10/lincoln-mkz-concept-detroit-2012/">Lincoln MKZ</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/01/13/ford-fusion-lexus-lf-lc-win-eyes-on-design-awards/">Ford Fusion, Lexus LF-LC win Eyes on Design awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 18:01:00 EST. Categories reflect art themes such as Pop Art, Renaissance, and Art Deco.<br /><br />Tickets are $20 for the show, while brunch and admission costs $100.
