EVO's Harry Metcalfe had some questions about the day-to-day livability of the Ferrari FF. When he brought those questions up to Ferrari, they suggested he take one for a couple of weeks and try it out for, as he calls them, "mundane duties." The image above is Metcalfe pointing to the 660-horsepower, all-wheel drive FF parked in one of his fields because, since he lives on a farm, mucking about the green is part of his daily routine. "It could use more ground clearance," he says, "but that's an option on this car."

He does get it on the "tarmac" and he likes it even more there than in the mud. Except for the buttons on the steering wheel; he thinks learning to use them is like learning to play guitar. He has a lot more to say besides that, and you can watch him expound for all of 17 minutes in the video below.
Continue reading Two weeks and 2,000 miles in Ferrari's FF with Evo

Two weeks and 2,000 miles in Ferrari's FF with Evo originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Jan 2013 19:58:00 EST.
With only 77 (or maybe 76) examples of the Aston Martin One-77 on the earth, the only thing rarer than the car itself are reviews or test drives of it. Evo Magazine, however, recently had the opportunity to slide behind the wheel of the limited-production Aston Martin supercar. In what it claims to be a world-exclusive, Evo not only got to drive the One-77, but it did so along some incredible roads in North Wales.

Coming in at a cool $1.87 million, we're happy to hear that the car drives as well as it looks. The video does a great job of providing plenty of in-depth information on the car as well as some killer driving shots that really let us hear the car's exhaust note. Considering that we usually only see this car gleaming under the lights of an auto show, the best part of the video might, in fact, be the closing shots showing the sea foam green, super exotic covered in road grime.

If you get jealous easily, you might want to skip this video, but everyone else should check it out below.
Continue reading EVO among first to finally test Aston Martin One-77

EVO among first to finally test Aston Martin One-77 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Jan 2013 20:00:00 EST.
Over the last couple of decades, we've seen countless attempts by startups looking to crack the supercar establishment. Predictably, the intenders have enjoyed and suffered wildly varying degrees of success. Some, like SSC North America, have attempted to get the attention of the world's plutocrats through sheer speed, while others, like Spyker, have attempted to gain access to the world's wealth through Ming The Merciless design. Nearly all have brought something new to the table, but essentially no new brands have managed to join the pantheon of hypercar royalty founded by Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. Well, nobody except for Pagani. If Horatio and friends don't yet have a seat at the table, they are certainly building the best case for admission, first with a seemingly endless stream of Zonda variants and now with this new Huayra.

The Huayra may have debuted a year ago, but the Modena-based automaker has been a bit skinflint with driving opportunities as it works the kinks out. In fact, the video drive shown above from the UK's EVO is the first full-on road test we're aware of. As we've seen and heard previously, the 730-horsepower Huayra looks the business, but we've been waiting for behind-the-wheel impressions.

According to EVO, the Huayra feels properly fast and engaging, yet it manages to deliver a stable, supple ride without feeling "old mannish." The throttle response from the AMG-sourced 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 is excellent, but the seven-speed single-clutch flappy-paddle gearbox has its fair share of low-speed refinement issues and the steering is chastised for being a bit slow and heavy. Judging from the audio in the video from about 56 seconds in, it also appears to have its fair share of squeaks, though it could be an early build car, or the noises could simply be from the video camera mount.

Regardless, the Huayra looks to be an impressive new baseline for the marque, and given Pagani's penchant for constant improvement as shown in its Zonda predecessor, we predict the this silver bolide will be a thorn in the establishment's side for many years to come. Scroll down to watch all the action.

Everyone has their ultimate vehicle wish list, and ours is littered with a smattering of models both obscure and asinine. One of the more mainstream sweethearts is the original Lotus Elan. Collin Chapman's wonderchild remains an impressive performer even today, thanks to its feathery curb weight and the impressive performance on hand. As you may recall, EVO Magazine pitted editorial director Harry Metcalfe's 1972 Elan Sprint against vehicles like the Toyota MR-2 and Mazda Miata back in the early 2000s. Metcalfe still has his tiny yellow convertible and was kind enough to bring a camera along for the roadster's first run of the spring season.

Weighing in at around 1,500 pounds and packing a surprising 126 horsepower, Metcalfe says the car is still good for sprints to 60 mph in a tick past six seconds. Unburdened by pesky life-saving hardware like crumple zones, steel reinforcements, airbags or any electronic nannies, the plucky little fiberglass creation is also a pretty smart handler even though the model is now officially 50 years old. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading EVO takes a closer look at Harry Metcalfe's 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint

EVO takes a closer look at Harry Metcalfe's 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Apr 2012 11:58:00 EST.
Few rivalries are as heated as that between the Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911. And with both models having recently been updated, Evo magazine has taken the updated GT-R and the new 911 Carrera S to the Bedford Autodrome for a little head-on-head action. And who better to put in front of the camera and behind the wheel than Tiff Needell, the longtime Fifth Gear co-host who's now doing a series of video tests for the magazine British enthusiasts love best.

Now if you're thinking that the GT-R really ought to be compared to the 911 Turbo and not the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera S, well, you're probably right. Particularly since Nissan hiked the price on its latest performance flagship to nearly $100,000. But Porsche hasn't released the turbocharged version of its latest 911, so the Carrera S will have to do.
The English are mad. And we know this for two reasons: one, they admit it; two, it's true. If more proof is needed, a video of Evo magazine's features editor, Henry Catchpole, sliding a Caterham Supersport up a French mountain in the snow should be enough. And the spindly car is missing its top. And he's missing his hat.

The Supersport is Caterham's street-legal version of the racing Seven used in the one-make racing series. It's got short gearing, a lightweight flywheel and LSD, a race-tuned suspension, and its 1.6-liter Ford engine has 140 horsepower to motivate a 1,146-pound car.

So, obviously, where else would you drive it? Follow the jump for the memorable action.
Continue reading Hardcore x2: How to flog a Caterham Supersports up a snow-covered French mountain

Hardcore x2: How to flog a Caterham Supersports up a snow-covered French mountain originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 14:57:00 EST.
At first glance, pitting the Porsche Boxster Spyder against the Audi R8 Spyder is a bit like throwing a trout in a five-gallon bucket with a piranha. After all, the big Audi boasts over 100 horsepower more than the baby Porsche. Throw in the fact that the R8 puts its power to the ground through all four wheels while the Boxster Spyder is left to manage with just two, and the fight looks even more bleak for Stuttgart's finest. Still, the Audi R8 Spyder isn't a lightweight by any stretch of the imagination. The vehicle needs all 430 horsepower from its 4.2-liter V8 to move the sports car's 3,858 pounds around the track.

The Porsche Boxster Spyder, meanwhile, weighs in at over 1,000 pounds lighter. That 100 horsepower gap doesn't seem so big now, does it? EVO Magazine recently took the time to put the two vehicles to the test and worked up a quick video of their exploits. Who came out on top? <strike>You'll just have to hit the jump to find out for yourself.</strike>

There's no shortage of automotive publications seeking to crown their own Car of the Year. And of course, each has their own criteria on which to base their decision. But for performance parameters, Evo does a more impressive job than most.

The British car mag does away with the minivans and the crossovers and focuses only on high performance machinery - regardless of price point - so when it comes down to naming the Evo Car of the Year, they have no trouble assembling the best driving machines that have come out in the past twelve months. Naming just one winner, though, is another matter entirely.

This year, the Evo team brought the very best the industry has to offer down to Portugal's Portimao circuit, and the crop of nominees was something to behold:
When Mini announced plans to bring the Countryman to its showrooms, the brand's acolytes recoiled in horror at the thought of a bloated all-wheel-drive model joining the range. To prove that the new micro-crossover has the chops to live up to Mini's race pedigree, Mini partnered with Prodrive to create the Countryman WRC. There was much rejoicing. Now EVO Magazine has put the little rally beast through its paces on a track.

The race-prepped Countryman looks quick and controllable, slicing through apexes and sending tires to the great smoky beyond. Maybe we should politely ask Prodrive to give our long-term Countryman the once-over. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading EVO thrashes the Mini Countryman WRC

EVO thrashes the Mini Countryman WRC originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 20:01:00 EST.
We've seen some pretty strange races in our days. From pitting cars against Japanese bullet trains and the London public transportation system to skydiving maniacs and jet fighters, nearly every hair-brained race you can think of has been put to the test for the public's enjoyment. Now we can add one more to that list.

EVO Magazine recently took the time to pit the Lamborghini Gallardo GP570-4 Performante against an Extra EA-300LP stunt plane in a race around the Bedford Autodrome. Did we mention that the guy in the sky is none other than former Red Arrow pilot Myles Garland?

While the prop plane is only good for 296 horsepower, it can also comfortably pull plus or minus 10 g while turning the pilot into a floppy rag doll. The Lamborghini, meanwhile, comes to the fight bearing 562 ponies and the miracle of all-wheel drive. Who comes out on top in such a ludicrous shoot out? You'll have to click past the jump to watch the video and find out for yourself.
Continue reading Lamborghini Gallardo laps track in race against... a stunt plane?

Lamborghini Gallardo laps track in race against... a stunt plane? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 14:58:00 EST.
The crew from EVO magazine managed to talk their way into a ride in the newest piece of insanity from Pagani. The Italian automaker is currently in the midst of endurance testing the Huayra for U.S. certification, and as a result, five of the cars are currently frolicking around Europe racking up precious kilometers. Pagani recently hosted a few of the company's customers at Sardinia, and EVO's Harry Metcalfe jumped into the passenger seat of the carbon fiber creation for a quick blast down the road. Fortunately for all of us, Metcalfe taped the whole experience.

The video shows the best look yet at the vehicle's adaptive aerodynamics, complete with plenty of active flaps that pop and dance as the Huayra builds speed. There's also the delicious sound of the supercar's twin-turbocharged 6.0-ltier V12 barking out 720 horsepower, too. The noise is nothing if not intoxicating. Hit the jump to check it out for yourself.
Continue reading Evo takes a spin in the Pagani Huayra

Evo takes a spin in the Pagani Huayra originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 12:33:00 EST.
Occasionally, we can't help but think we were born in the wrong corner of the globe. With our penchant for diesel fuel, wagons, hatchbacks and forced-induction four-cylinders, something tells us we would have been right at home growing up on the old continent.

Why all this musing on our misplaced youth? The boys at Evo Magazine have just released a new teaser video for the rag's upcoming issue, and the cover story is rife with all sorts of metal we don't get to play with here in the Land of the Free. The editors lined up three of the meanest hatchback bruisers available in the EU and matched them up against a mighty Ferrari Enzo. That's right, an Enzo. Go big or go home, fellas.

The contenders include a Ford Focus RS, a Subaru WRX STI Spec C and the blistering new Audi RS 3 Sportback. For those of you who are keeping score, our chubby Yank hands won't even get close to touching any of that hardware in our neck of the woods. How'd the three musketeers stand up to the might Italian stallion? Your guess is as good as ours. We'll have to pick up the next Evo Magazine to find out. In the meantime, check out the video after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Georgian!

Already one of the fastest cars on the road, the Koenigsegg CCR is not the first that'd spring to mind when thinking of rides that could use some additional tuning. It's already got 816 horsepower, after all, and can top out at around 245 miles per hour. What more could you want?

Well, that was before the new Agera came out. Now the previous-generation Koenigsegg suddenly seems a little outdated. So the UK's Evo magazine - a publication blessed with a garage full of supercars - brought its CCR to the folks at Edo Competition for a little... enhancement.

The tuning house known for its custom Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches carefully went to work on Evo's Koenigsegg, remapping the ECU and tweaking the pair of superchargers. Then they massaged the transmission, reworked the gearing, upgraded the brakes, and enhaned the car's appearance inside and out.

The result is 891 horsepower, re-calibrated to kick in at lower revs for quicker acceleration at the expense of top end. Follow the jump for all the details in the press release and check out the high-resolution images in the mega gallery below for a closer look.

It's been a long time since we've heard anything about the Caparo T1. The Red Bull X1 may cut a similar profile, but unlike the strictly digital creation, the Caparo was actually built. Unfortunately, it didn't catch on as planned, but a minor detail like minimal market share can't stop EVO from pounding the snot out of it in Germany.

The British car rag is known for featuring only the good stuff, and in this case took the T1 for a spin around no less iconic a racetrack than the Nürburgring Nordschleife. As you can see from the video after the jump, this wasn't a closed-circuit record lap, EVO's Phil Bennett having to scythe his way through other traffic on the track. But watching the T1 make minced meat out of the 911 GT3s and Jaguar XFRs as if they're standing still is promise enough. And watch for the Jag pendulum powerslide mid-way through.

Chris Harris and the Ferrari 599 GTO on track - Click above to watch videos after the jump

So, if you were watching Chris Harris give the Ferrari 599 GTO what for and thinking, "Yeah, but can you can only really use a car like that on a track," sit back and prepare to be vindicated. The gurus at EVO have been so kind as to release a three-part video series showing exactly what can be accomplished if the car is unleashed on the Ferrari Fiorano test track. And let's just say you don't hear him complain about the air-conditioning this time around.

The first segment sees Harris wedged in the cockpit with the insanely fast Raffael De Simone at the wheel - the same guy who managed to fling the car around the Nürburgring in 6:58.1. If you like seeing the typically even-keeled Harris get surprised by the wicked carbon ceramic brakes on the 599 GTO, you can check it out on the EVO site.

But we're more interested in watching Harris himself shuffle the Prancing Horse. While there's a profusion of descriptors like "quick" "awesome" and "outrageous" thrown about during the brief segments, it's interesting to see the car's driver aids come into play - and just how far they'll let the car get out of line before reigning you in. Hit the jump to find out.
The slick little program was worked up with some help from Audi, and it will keep you up to date on everything from trackside news to driver bios and team information. Everything gets separated into Audi news and other, but it still manages to be fairly complete. There's even a section full of handy tips about the track for those of you lucky enough to be able to see the action for yourself.

The best part? The app is absolutely gratis. You can check it out at the iTunes App Store.
The good part is that it's free, but the bad part is that it's not the full magazine. Still, it's one of the better e-magazines we've seen, with embedded video, audio clips, photo galleries, desktop wallpaper and plenty of other cool stuff to click on.

The first issue starts off in typical EVO fashion with plenty of supercars. The editors review both the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lexus LFA before comparing four super convertibles - the Jaguar XKR, Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, Audi R8 Spyder and Ferrari California. Plus there's quick takes of the Spyker C8 Aileron and Volkswagen Golf R, the cars of the Geneva Motor Show, an update on the long-term Pagani Zonda and one of our favorite "classic" EVO videos.

Sound like your thing? Click here to view the first issue or head over to EVO to register and get your free copy every month.
EVO lauches new interactive e-magazine originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 May 2010 10:28:00 EST.
Sure, we've already had the chance to flog the new Lexus LFA on the track, but we haven't had the opportunity to spend time with Lexus's new supercar on public roads. The folks at EVO have that covered, though, and as we would imagine, the LFA is quite a different machine when it isn't being driven at ten-tenths.

So, what does EVO think of the Lexus LFA in an everyday driving environment? Hit the jump to watch the video and find out.

2010 Lotus Evora - click above for high res image gallery

Lotus has managed to snag two car of the year honors from EVO magazine for two different machines. The new Evora came out on the top of the heap among the new road going cars, while the Evora went into production earlier this year and as of last month, Lotus has apparently delivered about 800 examples. EVO did their testing in Scotland at the Isle of Skye and the Lotus bested the likes of the Ferrari 458, Aston Martin V12 Vantage and Porsche 911 GT3.

EVO also evaluated track cars at the Bedford Autodrome for their own award and here Lotus again took the top prize. Running against an assortment of competitors from the Ford Focus RS and Mitsubishi Evo to more extreme machines like a Lamborghini Gallardo and the latest Arial Atom, the Lotus 2-Eleven got the best score. The 2-Eleven had the second best time and was found to be the most fun to drive. Considering the 2-Eleven looks more like a pure race car, it's astonishing that under British rules you can actually get single vehicle type approval to drive them on public roads. 'Scuse me Lotus? We'd love to try out the 2-Eleven!
It only just beat out the Ferrari F430 Scuderia, and had only slightly more breathing between it and the third place Audi R8. Looking at the entire top ten list, two race-cars-for-the-street beat eight other cars with nifty little features like power windows and leather seats, which makes sense, but even cars like the 350Z and Mini Cooper S Works still made it on the list.

However, the most interesting result could be that the Honda Civic Type R came in sixth... one spot ahead of the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. We have no idea what their exact criteria was, not having read the article, but it appears that at EVO, raging bulls should be a little more ... civic.

[Source: German Car Scene]
Porsche 997 GT3 RS named 2007 EVO Car of the Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 20:02:00 EST.
