Vauxhall is rolling out the retro cool by holding an invitation-only roller skating event in North London on July 29. As part of the festivities, the General Motors division has reportedly commissioned bespoke sets of Vauxhall Corsa roller boots (seriously), and the event will even feature a "pit-stop themed hair salone with free styling from a 'huge name' in celebrity hairdressing." The secret party doesn't look to have a name, but it's got the kind of vibe that doesn't need one: "'70s disco meets Knight Rider on roller skates." If only the Knight Rider show had thought of that, perhaps it would still be on the air.

You can check out the details at www.tiny.cc/vauxhallskate, and you can get into the groove with video of a young lady doing her thing wearing Vauxhall Corsa skates after the jump. Hat tip to Clarence.

[Source: Event magazine]
Continue reading VIDEO: Vauxhall trying to bring back roller skating?
The Mini Mille Miglia -- Click above for image gallery

This weekend saw the running of the first Mini Mille Miglia. No affiliation to the famous touring event, the Mini Mille is a greatly scaled down version of the race. How scaled down? Well, it's run on a digital Scalextric track for 1/32-scale slot cars in Umbria, Italy. Put on to benefit Alzheimer's research, the Mini Mille was a full 3-day program of public activities, including 14 different races throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Event founder Graham Lane built a 30-meter track tucked amid an Italian countryside: 20 meters of it is a central circuit, sightseers can dip off into a 10-meter loop into a forest-lined valley and over an aqueduct. Participants could either go with their cars to Umbria to race in person, or could send their cars and have them driven -- and photographed and videotaped -- just for the experience.

While it's too late to enter this year's race, it's not too late to start prepping your miniature runner for next year's Mini Mille Miglia. Nor is it too late to have a gander at the gallery of images below.

Gallery: Scalextric Mini Mille Miglia

[Source: Mini Mille Miglia via Pistonheads | Photo credit: Jaak Beentjes]
Mini Miglia - Slot car version of classic race to benefit Alzheimer's research originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 05 Jul 2009 09:05:00 EST. A. J. O'Neil, a Detroit-area coffee shop owner, decided to attempt a record-breaking charity event that would assist, support, and call attention to the American auto worker.

He's done it by trying to line up 240 acts -- from professional bands to politicians (no, really) to Detroiters who just want to play a ditty to show their love -- that will perform one hour sets for ten straight days. And even though the folks in the logo are obviously listening to Skynyrd, the Free Bird folks won't be appearing. So far there are 213 acts scheduled. There's still time to play if you've got the feeling, and if you just want to watch, you can head down any time of the day or check out the concert's live feed.

[Source: Assembly Line Concert]
Detroit-area café hosting 240-hour-long concert for auto workers originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 22 Mar 2009 16:33:00 EST. Why? Because it's been cancelled. If you need a reason that an 18-month-long event with trials in 18 nations for folks vying for a three-week jaunt through Asia has been killed, your hint is 'train wreck economy.' It's no surprise, after the company has cut production, bowed out of the Detroit Auto Show, and asked the British government for £1 billion to keep the machinery running. Instead, the company will focus on product launches and creating other ways to reach consumers. If there is any silver lining about another cool motoring event being relegated to the dustbin of history, it's that when car makers are in the money again we expect to have a pile of brand new cool auto events to announce. Or not...
Continue reading Land Rover cancels G4 Challenge

Land Rover cancels G4 Challenge originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 16:31:00 EST. While we love going to these races, auto shows, concours and cruises to report on them for you, we know there are many of you out there who would like to witness these happenings firsthand. Many of you have commented that although you enjoy our event coverage you'd like more advance warning of the events we are attending so you might be able to check them out yourselves.

Well, as you might imagine, putting together a calendar isn't so simple. Often times we get last minute word of an event, or sometimes the events we cover aren't open to the public. Still, we understand your craving for live automotive events and we are here to help. We've scoured our planners and checked our favorite web links and have compiled a select calendar for November. We'll try to post a new one of these every month and we encourage you to add local events we haven't included in the comments for all to see. Our hope is that you'll scan the list and be able to find something exciting in your neck of the woods.

Don't take it personally if we skip one of your favorites, just know that we are trying to keep it simple for now. Two of our favorite resources for planning what events we are going to attend, btw, are the New York Times automotive calendar for national and international stuff, and for local stuff here in Southern California, our buddy Dave Lindsay's SoCalCarCulture pages. Dave has been photographing and reporting on the local car scene a long time and if we don't make it to one of the events on his calendar, you can be pretty sure that Dave will be posting pics of it before long. Enough talk, check out the select November event calendar we put together for you after the jump.
Continue reading Event Alert: November calendar of automotive events

Event Alert: November calendar of automotive events originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 10:48:00 EST.
