As is generally the case, we once again find ourselves swooning over the European Honda Civic hatchback that made its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new-for-2012 North American-spec Civic hasn't exactly resonated well with us (or the rest of the media), and while we haven't had the chance to drive the new Euro Civic, our thought is that it simply must be better than the milquetoast slab of economy car that we've been served here in the United States.

We've always liked the Euro Civic's five-door shape, with its rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar. But as for the rest of the 2012 model's design elements, there's a bit of overall weirdness, especially around its rump. Nevertheless, it'll likely do well in Europe, where bold designs are more widely accepted (just look at anything by Peugeot or Citroën).

Powering the Civic are a range of three different engines - two fueled by gasoline, one by diesel. The top-end diesel powerplant is Honda's 2.2-liter engine with 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and below that, the two gasoline engines measure in at 1.4 and 1.8 liters, putting out 99 hp and 140 hp, respectively.

Take some time to scroll through our giant high-res gallery of the 2012 Euro Civic. After that, follow the jump to watch a promo video for the new car and check out Honda's indulgently long press release.
Continue reading Pics Aplenty: Honda releases a boatload on the 2012 Euro Civic [w/video]

Pics Aplenty: Honda releases a boatload on the 2012 Euro Civic [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 12:30:00 EST.
Of all the new debuts scheduled for the Frankfurt Motor Show - now less than two weeks away - few will proliferate quite like the new European-market Honda Civic. The Old World version of the new Civic has so far only been teased, but the company's UK competition division has already started work on the racing version that will take on the most famous circuits Great Britain has to offer.

The competition version of the new Euro Civic is being built according to the new NGTC rules employed by the British Touring Car Championship, and is currently undergoing development in conjunction with Team Dynamics. The outfit fields the old Civic, which was introduced to the BTCC back in 2007, with considerable success: the team has collected a slew of titles in the series, including the teams' and manufacturers' championships last season, and is currently sitting second and third in the current standings.

Expect the new racer to be unveiled sometime after the road car makes its debut in Frankfurt. In the meantime, Honda has released the first of a four-part video series highlighting its BTCC effort. Check it out after the jump.
Continue reading Honda Racing UK already working on NGTC-spec Civic

Honda Racing UK already working on NGTC-spec Civic originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 20:02:00 EST.
While we've been, um, enjoying the latest take on the Honda Civic for a few good months now, our cousins across the pond have yet to be able to sink their teeth into the new European version of the Japanese compact. That's all about to change as Honda prepares to unveil the 2012 Euro Civic at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The Japanese automaker has been so kind as to slide the web a little teaser ahead of the vehicle's debut complete with a photo of the hatchback's rear and a few scant details. The shot shows a new integrated spoiler and third brake light that Honda says helps manage the vehicle's aerodynamics at speed.

In addition, the company says that the hatch will boast class-leading interior room for its occupants and its cargo as well as "stand-out looks." We wait with baited breath. Look for the ninth-generation Euro Civic to take a bow in Germany on September 13. Hit the jump for a glance at the brief press release.
Continue reading Honda teases next-gen Euro Civic

Honda teases next-gen Euro Civic originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 10:59:00 EST.
Honda has just released details on what buyers in the UK can expect to see from the 2011 Civic. The company has kept the changes to its spacey-looking five-door largely cosmetic, including a new grille up front. The company says that piece borrows cues from the legendary Type R, and if you squint your eyes enough, you can almost see the resemblance. A new range of wheels is also available for next year ranging in size from 16 to 17 inches depending on engine and trim level. There's also a new Ionized Bronze paint color available across the lineup.

Inside, Honda has moved to up the ante ever so slightly. SE and ES trims will now boast seats that are covered in half fabric and half Alcantara, while the Si guise now comes with heated front thrones. Otherwise, the vehicle stays much the way it was for 2010. Under the hood, buyers are still greeted with the familiar 1.4 and 1.8-liter powerplants, and the horsepower figures haven't moved from last year's numbers, either. Hit the jump for the full press release.
If this rendering from Auto Express is to be believed, the new hatch is a certifiable stunner. That is due in large part to the fact it looks almost exactly like another stunner: the new Volkswagen Scirocco. Swap out the grille and the rear lights, and that Honda is... practically a VW.

The OSM concept at the British Auto Show was the appetizer for the next Euro Civic's looks -- there was simply more distance between it and That Other Hatch since the OSM had no top. Under the hood, though, Honda has vastly different plans: rumors include a 1.5-liter hybrid with 150 hp and a 2.0-liter for the Type R that could be assisted by an electric motor

The 2-door hatch will be a different proposition than the 4-door and aimed at a different buyer just like the current models in Europe. Not that it will make a difference to American buyers, because just like the car it (kind of) plays doppelganger to, the Civic hatch isn't coming to the U.S. Thanks for the tip, Colin!

[Source: Auto Express]
Rendered Speculation: Next Euro Civic will look like Scirocco? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Aug 2008 11:59:00 EST. Sharply styled, the Civic 3-Door Type S gets 140 horsepower underhood courtesy of either a 1.8L i-VTEC four or a 2.2L diesel. Both engines come with a six-speed manual as standard equipment. Buyers of the gasoline-engined car will be able to select the i-SHIFT automated manual gearbox as an option.

The interior features Honda's Dual Link dash, and alacantra seating, aluminum pedals, and a leather-wrapped wheel communicate the car's sporty nature. Interior carrying capacity is identical to that of the Civic 5-door when the fold-flat rear seats are down.

All Type S models get 17" wheels and Vehicle Stability Assist as well. The Type S GT adds a panoramic glass roof and a host of convenience options, including dual-zone A/C and cruise control.

In March 2007, the UK will see the Civic Type S joined by the 200HP Civic Type R.

The Civic Type S 3-door goes on sale in January 2007. It makes its global debut at July's British International Motor Show.

Dear Honda, America wants the Civic Type R. In white, please.
