There's something about vintage Italian machinery. From the curvaceous lines of the Ferrari 250 GTO to the more exacting angles of the Lamborghini Espada, the cars hold the promise of something illicit. Something both scowling parents and stern-jawed law enforcement would thoroughly disapprove of if you happened to get caught in the act. It's one of the infinite reasons we love them, and the crew at Petrolicious have managed to capture that precipice of temptation on film.

CJ Bonura was kind enough to let the crew tag along during a little impromptu canyon run in his big silver Espada. The video eschews the typical owner interview in favor of more engine audio and an appropriate soundtrack. If the clip doesn't leave you wanting to jump into your own car for a quick sprint, we can't help you. Check it out in the video below, and stay tuned for more goodness from Petrolicious.
Continue reading Words aren't needed in the company of an Espada

Words aren't needed in the company of an Espada originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 12:43:00 EST.
A man in Bloomfield Township, Michigan was trying to start his 1974 Lamborghini Espada when the car caught fire in the garage of a house he had just sold. Thankfully the man was unhurt and was able to get his mother and dog out of the house before the fire gutted the lower level and garage.

The new owner had closed on the house a week earlier. Firefighters said the first floor of the house was a total loss and the second story sustained heavy smoke damage. The classic Lambo was toast. Nobody's sure what exactly caused the car to ignite, but we'd guess carburetors and notoriously faulty electronics have something to do with it. You can watch news coverage of the Lambo inferno after the jump.

If you were shocked when Lamborghini unveiled a four-door in the form of the Estoque concept at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, then you know how enthusiasts must have felt when the Raging Bull took the wraps off the Espada in 1968. A four-seat Lambo? Shocking! But that's what they did, and the Espada entered into the history books.

Powered by Lambo's trusty 3.9-liter V12 that already appeared in the 350GT, 400GT and Miura, the Espada was the first Lambo to be offered with an automatic. In fact, it was the first automatic transmission - all two speeds of it - capable of handling that much power, and came on offer with the 1974 model. This model, however, was made in '72 - making it one of the last Series II models made before the Series III came along - and is equipped with a five-speed manual, along with four-wheel disc brakes and a fully independent suspension: cutting edge stuff for its time.

It's tan, it's had one owner, and from the looks of things, it's been kept in meticulous condition. The car's up for grabs on eBay by Lamborghini Houston. Bidding at the time of writing is up to a modest $20,200 and the reserve price hasn't been met yet, so if this is your idea of automotive heaven, stop on by and check it out.
What are we talking about? We're talking about the coming preponderance of Lamborghini-branded trinkums. Okay, we're not really sure how much exactly there will be, but Lamborghini is slowing down its vehicular business a little for 2007 and picking up its activity in the knick-knack sector. The reasoning for the growth shrinkage is to improve the efficiency of the organization, as well as popularize the brand through the aforementioned things other than cars. Hey, there are Ferarri branded laptops, and F.A. Porsche has designed all sorts of stuff, so why not? We'd love to see what Lamborghini could do to the simple commode, forinstance. In all seriousness, the brand is coming off a sales growth spurt of over 25 percent between '05 and '06. They're playing Ben Bernanke so that they can maximize profits and take a breath as they prepare for future growth.

Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann played it close to the vest when talking to Winding Road about upcoming developments from Sant A'gata. There will be new Lambos coming soon, though. Keep an eye out for a V10 powered, Porsche Cayenne based SUV sometime in 2009. Following on the heels of what will be one of the world's most expensive and high performance SUVs will be a 2+2 inspired by the Espada. The Espada was a four-place GT that looked like the result of a tryst between a 400GT and a Plymouth Belvedere. We think a real car that you could use would be a great addition to the stable of Trattori. The Gallardo and Murcielago are all well and good, but you're not going to get dressed up in your finery and try to wriggle in and out of those things in front of your favorite restaurant's plate glass window. An SUV and GT make perfect sense -- they'll broaden the appeal of the Lamborghini brand and offer exclusive-car buyers something a little more mainstream while still offering outstanding performance. Perhaps they won't be quite as capable as the big-dogs, but they'll certainly help pull the financial sled.

[Source: Winding Road]

Lamborghini's plans for the future originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 11:38:00 EST. At least not according to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann who is quoted saying, "Retro design is not what we are here for. So we won't do the Miura, even as a limited edition." Despite rumors of a limited run of Miuras, a nuovo LM002, and a possible Espada redux, future Lambos will focus on being leaders in their segments rather than homages to the past.

That doesn't mean that entire segments will be avoided because of past entries, however. "The concept of a Lamborghini 2+2 or an SUV is possible, but we wouldn't use the name Espada or LM002," Winkelmann added. "I want Lamborghini on the edge. Our brand values are uncompromising, extreme and Italian. And I want our product to match the brand. Lamborghinis must be lower, wider and more sharply styled than our rivals." The most likely all-new Lamborghini looks to be an SUV that would share a platform with Audi's upcoming Q5 crossover. Of course it will be lower, wider and more sharply styled compared to the Audi. But in the meantime, look for LP640 roadsters and possibly rwd Gallardo and Murci variants showing up in spy shots in the coming months.

Bullish tip, Jay!

[Source: Car Magazine via Jalopnik]
No retro for Lambo originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 07 Oct 2006 09:09:00 EST.
Alright, so we've probably pegged our Tom Cruise quota for the month. That said, who can pass up on astar-laden train of 10 Lamborghinis?

The Italian supercar is set to make a prominent appearance in Mission Impossible 3, what is likely to be one ofthis summer's highest-profile (and highest grossing) films. And to kick off the film's world premiere atthe Adriano Cinema in Rome, Cruise and company rolled up a brace of the angular beauties.

Not exactly a wallflower, Cruise was seen leaping onto one of the Lamborghini's roofs in order to greet theassembled masses.
