The Targa Tasmania is a road-rally event that's been running since 1992, taking place, as you may have guessed, on the island of Tasmania. In 2011, this five-day race began in the coastal city of George Town and ended in the capital city of Hobart. The event features both classic and modern sports cars, changing weather conditions and some truly amazing driving talent.

Targa Tasmania has played host to some amazing drivers (such as Walter Röhrl) and equally amazing machines (such as Eric Bana's Beast). Porsche rather conveniently put together a video shot on the last leg of the 2011 Targa, and you can watch it by clicking past the jump. There you'll see Porsche driver extraordinaire Röhrl and others talk about their participation in the rally, and you'll also see plenty of footage of all the little Tasmanian Devils as they wind their way across the island before finally crossing the finish line. There's a list of movies that any die-hard can fan should see, which includes such classics as Le Mans, Bullitt, Grand Prix, Vanishing Point, Ronin and C'était un Rendezvous, to name a few. We should add Love the Beast to that list.

Directed by Eric Bana, the film documents this Australian actor's love affair with his classic Ford GT Falcon Coupe. More than a tale of one man's relationship with his car, Love the Beast explores the same connection that anyone can have with his her wheels, even if you aren't a hunky Aussie with a car the rest of us would kill for.

We've got one, count 'em one, copy of Love the Beast: Special Edition on DVD to give away. The two-disc set includes the film, but also piles a bunch of special features, including an interview with Eric Bana, an extended interview with Jeremy Clarkson, 1970s Ford Falcon commercials and a short film on the Targa Tasmania Rally. Ask the typical gearhead what race they most want to attend and you'll probably here something about the 24 Hours of Le Mans (with a couple of mental patients no doubt pining for the 24 Hours of LeMons). Awesome race, great movie, viva la France and all that, but let's be honest. Le Mans has become so concerned with something called "safety" that they chicaned the Mulsanne Straight! As any fan of the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe will tell you, "Boo!"

Now consider how they do things down unda. Recently, in the interest of safety, officials decided to limit fans of the Bathurst 1000 to 24 cans of beer per day. Not to be all low brow, but that's our kind of racing. And we think we'd like the Bathurst 12 Hour enduro quite a bit, too. And not because movie star Eric Bana is set to run it in a Mitsubishi EVO X - again.

The star of good movies like Chopper and Munich (and the face of bad films like Troy and Hulk) is returning to the Bathurst 12 to attempt to improve upon his team's 10th place overall finish. No stranger to motorsports (those familiar with his excellent car love epic Love the Beast know this), Bana has done quite a bit of racing, including several Targa Tasmania events, a Porsche GT3 Challenge and the Australian GT Championship.

Along with his teammates Tim Leahey and Peter Hill, Bana will be re-campaigning the same Mitsubishi EVO X. With more than 50 cars set to take the grid, improving upon last year's results will prove difficult. Of course, that's why they race. The Bathurst 12 Hour will take place February 12-14.

Actor Eric Bana has a thing for auto racing. He also has a thing for his car, a 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT that he's owned for 26 years, since he was 15 years old. He combined those passions after completing a two-year-long restoration of the car and entering the 2007 Targa Tasmania.

Then he combined those with his passion for acting, and will release his film called Love the Beast about the car and the race in a little over a week on March 12. The movie's supporting cast includes Jeremy Clarkson, Jay Leno, and, um... Dr. Phil - possibly the oddest supporting cast since Weird Al Yankovic's UHF. Incredibly, for those who didn't follow the Targa Tasmania, the new trailer gives away the movie's twist, but it's probably worth it just to hear Clarkson ask "600 horsepower... and leaf springs?" There's more than one way for Hollywood actors to go green. While most celebrities choose to go the way of Toyota Prius ownership, Eric Bana's chosen green ride is a 1973 Ford Falcon from Australia, a gas guzzler from a time that just barely predates most modern emissions equipment. That car, which is the title character in Bana's upcoming new movie Love The Beast, was modified to take part in the grueling Targa Tasmania Rally, and we doubt the list of upgrades included bits like catalytic converters and computer-controlled engine management systems. Other stars slated to appear in the new flick include certified motor-heads Jay Leno, Jeremy Clarkson and... um, Dr. Phil. So, what's the green angle?

Bana's production company, known as Pick Up Truck Pictures, contracted an outside firm to calculate the total carbon emissions spent in the production of the film. To offset this carbon footprint, oxygen-exhaling trees will be planted to suck up their share of carbon dioxide and restore forest ecosystems. Ta-da!

There's a rich tradition of Hollywood actors dabbling - some more seriously or successfully than others - in motor sports. Great names like Steve McQueen and the late Paul Newman instantly come to mind, but Eric Bana is aspiring to fill their considerable racing shoes. The star of Munich and Black Hawk Down has been campaigning his Porsche 996 Cup at various events, and is now gearing up to compete at one of his native Australia's biggest motor races: the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour.

The "once around the clock" race at Mount Panorama will feature a record 49 teams this year, driving Alfas, BMWs, Fords, Holdens, Hondas, Mazdas, Mitsubishis, Nissans, Porsches, Subarus and Toyotas - 12 marques in all, representing eight of the ten top-selling automakers in Australia. Pictured above with his Ford Falcon, star of his upcoming documentary Love the Beast, Bana will be driving a Mitsubishi Evolution X, competing alongside his team mates against V8 Supercar and Australian rally drivers, as well as local television personality Grant Denyer who is currently recovering from injuries sustained while driving a monster truck. Eric Bana is the man. Don't believe us? Go watch Black Hawk Down. Unbeknownst to us, Bana also happens to be one of those world famous actors who has a passion for cars and racing. The lead of such films as Hulk, Troy and Munich is working on his directorial debut that just happens to star his own personal car: an old Australian-market Ford XB GT coupe. The film is a documentary called Love the Beast and isn't just about cars, but rather the passion people have for their hobbies. Bana's passions just happen to be racing and restoring old cars, so they get a staring role. Other celebs such as Jay Leno, Dr. Phil and Jeremy Clarkson reportedly make cameos in the film to help Bana make his point, which we suppose is that passion, passion for anything, is important in our lives. Unfortunately, we don't have any details on the documentary's release date yet as its IMDB listing is lacking in detail and Bana only made first mention of the film at this past weekend's Bathurst 1000 race.
