Naturally, any given engine needs to make enough power for its intended application, but fuel efficiency is just as important in modern society. This being the case, it's not terribly surprising that Volkswagen's innovative 1.4-liter Twincharger engine has taken home top honors as the 2009 International Engine of the Year, beating out BMW's powerful 3.0-liter direct-injected twin-turbo six-cylinder powerplant by just four points.

The Engie of the Year award is handed out based on the voting results of 65 motor scribes polled from all around the globe. Some 32 countries are represented in the jury, including the U.S., Germany, Japan, China, the U.K., and Korea.

To go along with its Engine of the Year award, VW's supercharged and turbocharged mill also won the Green Engine of the Year trophy - beating out Honda's 1.3-liter IMA hybrid powertrain in the process - and also took the nod in its 1.0-1.4-liter size class. Here's a list of the rest of the award winners:

Best New Engine - Porsche's 3.8-liter 385bhp flat-six

Best Performance Engine - Mercedes-AMG 6.2-liter V8

The Bavarian automaker's 5.0L V10 won the award that year and in 2006, and BMW's luscious 3.0L twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine won it in 2007 and has repeated its performance by winning the International Engine of the Year Award again for 2008. We get it, BMW makes really good engines.

There were 11 other categories in which engines from around the world were honored, and no less than five of those were also won by BMW. Check the list below to see what other automakers were able to wrest an International Engine of the Year Award from BMW.

Best New Engine of 2008
BMW 2.0L twin-turbo diesel (123d)

Green Engine of the Year 2008
Toyota 1.5L Hybrid Synergy Drive (Prius)

Best Performance Engine 2008
Porsche 3.6L Turbo (911 Turbo, 911 GT2)

Check out the rest of the awards for individual displacement classes after the jump, and visit the source below for a lot of good information on why each engine was a winner.

[Source: International Engine of the Year Awards]
Continue reading 2008 International Engine of the Year awards announced...

2008 International Engine of the Year awards announced... originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 May 2008 10:29:00 EST. BMW has won its third consecutive International Engine of the Year award, due this time to the incredible twin-turbo 3.0L inline six that resides in the 335i's engine bay. The 300hp (or more) motor combines blistering performance (car magazines report 0-60 times in the 4.8-5.1 range) with very good fuel economy and virtually no turbo lag. It won three awards in all, with the Bavarians also taking the trophy for Best New Engine and best 2.5L to 3.0L engine.

BMW didn't stop its winning ways with the twin-turbo 3.0L, either. The 1.6L turbo four found in the Mini Cooper S and Peugeot 207, the 2.5L engine in the standard 3-Series, and the 5.0L V10 that powers the M5 and M6 were all winners. Toyota and VW each came away with two victories, and Porsche won its first ever International Engine award by virtue of the 3.6 turbo in the 911. Check out all the winners in the press release after the jump.

[Source: Newspress.co.uk]
Continue reading BMW wins third International Engine of the Year Award in a row

BMW wins third International Engine of the Year Award in a row originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 May 2007 09:06:00 EST.
