The Italian electric motorcycle maker Energica is setting up shop in San Francisco, and shows off its latest bike with California tour.
Translogic's Jonathon Buckley takes to the hills of Mulholland atop the Energica Ego, an all-electric performance motorcycle out of Italy. And while our ride takes place in the US, Energica CEO Livia Cevolini joins the conversation from across the pond to give us details on one of the world's first production-ready electric superbikes.
The Energica Ego electric motorcycle from Italy has just finished jumping through all the NHTSA and EPA hoops necessary to make it available to US consumers. It has also just faced down a handful of high-performance competitors in an informal set of drag races. You can see how well it stacks up against some formidable performers in the following video.
Meet Eva, the latest electric motorcycle from Energica, freshly revealed at the 100th edition of EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori) in Milan. The Italian company has stripped its Ego, turning the bones of its superbike into a naked streetfighter. The result is an eye-catching creation designed to give riders a bit more control, but still capture their hearts.
Throw EV enthusiasts into a room with diehard motorcyclists, and prepare to see sparks fly. The perfect storm of oil and water famously struck when electric bikes first competed at the Isle of Man TT, and the conflict continues every time a battery-powered two-wheeler crosses swords with one of its internal combustion ancestors on public roads.
Veni, vidi, vici. If electric motorcycles could talk, that's just what the Energica Ego would be saying to itself as it makes its way back to its Italian birthplace. As foretold, the "Where is my Ego" tour brought several bikes to our shores, along with a few company officials, crossing the land and making promotional stops in the San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York areas. The hearts of pretty much all the moto-journalists who rode the Italian machine were conquered in the process.
The Energica Ego is the awesome Italian electric sports bike that we've been dying to see stateside since the concept was first revealed at the Milan International Motorcycle Show (EICMA) back in 2011. Thankfully, that's about to happen as the company's "Where is My Ego" tour brings bikes across the Atlantic for prospective buyers and the curious to try for themselves.
