With the extra attention given to President Obama's plug-in vehicle efforts today because of a letter urging the creation of a new federal task force for electric vehicles (EVs), how about we take a look at what the government thinks is happening with EVs now and in the coming years? A group of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been focusing their efforts on advanced technology batteries for electric vehicles. Their work on lithium-air batteries has led to several recent discoveries, and gives "riding on air" a whole new meaning.
Plug-in vehicle proponent are confident that whatever up-front cost premium a plug-in vehicle might demand, a lot of the extra dough will be recoupable after the vehicle has reached the end of its life. Whether it's to simply recycle the lithium or to repurpose the batteries for stationary energy storage, there are plenty of ideas on how to re-use that pricey pack.
