If you've attended major international auto show in the U.S. this season, you've likely seen this car: Edsel Ford's 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster. We first saw it at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegancee last August, then again in January at the Detroit Auto Show. It is, frankly, a most beautiful specimen, and since we hadn't yet taken the opportunity to capture it with our own lenses, New York seemed like the perfect place to hold an impromptu shoot.

The Speedster has a very long history going back to 1932 when Edsel Ford, then president of Ford Motor Company, returned from Europe and asked design director E.T. Gregorie to pen a sports car similar to the ones he saw running around Europe. It started out as a 1934 Ford, but was radically altered to make a low slung, two-seat sports car with technology that wouldn't appear on production Fords for many years. It originally weighed 2,100 pounds and was powered by a 75-bhp Model 40 flathead V8 that was later replaced by a 100-bhp Mercury V8.

Edsel Ford enjoyed the car until his death in 1943, at which point the car began a journey of many ownerships, ultimately vanished and then resurfaced in 1999 when it was sold to a collector for $1.76 million. When the collector died, the Speedster was given to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House who oversaw a complete restoration of the car. It now travels the auto show circuit, on display in a place of honor within the Lincoln display.
Continue reading Edsel Ford's 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster

Edsel Ford's 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 13:31:00 EST.
Jay Leno always gets to take his turn behind the wheels of lots of big, fast, beautiful things that make the enthusiast get all choked up with high-horsepower emotion and exhaust gasses. But he can also check out things that are just weird and beautiful without actually driving - and in these two cases, those things are American.

There are two videos after the jump from last week's Pebble Beach festivities in Monterey, California - one of the 1960 Plymouth XNR Concept designed by Karim Eddie but named for powerhouse designer Virgil Exner. Long, red and asymmetrical and powered by a Valiant engine, there's only one, which is only right.

The other vid is of Edsel Ford's 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster. Certainly one of the most compelling cars of the entire weekend, Jay takes his time with Edsel Ford's grandson and Pebble concours judge Ken Gross to dive into the speedster's creation and restoration. Hit the jump to check them out.
Continue reading Jay Leno checks out some strange and beautiful American things at Pebble

Jay Leno checks out some strange and beautiful American things at Pebble originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 28 Aug 2011 19:40:00 EST.
Pebble Beach enjoyed a visit by a very special member of the Ford stable last week. Lincoln, along with the Edsel and Eleanor Ford house, displayed Edsel Bryant Ford's freshly-restored 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster at the Monterey Concours d'Elegance.

Inspired by a visit to Europe in 1932 and penned by none other than E.T. Gregorie, Ford chief designer at the time, the Roadster began life as a 1934 Model 40 frame before going under the knife for substantial revisions. Stretched a full inch over factory dimensions and saddled substantially lower to the ground, the vehicle boasts a rear-pitched cockpit, long nose and custom aluminum bodywork. A classic Ford Flathead V8 powers the rear wheels.

After Edsel passed away in 1943, the vehicle made a few scant appearances around the country before vanishing. It surfaced again at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in 1999 and sold to a collector for a heady $1.76 million. When the collector died, the car was returned to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House before receiving a full restoration to return it to its former glory. Hit the jump for a video of the car's unveiling and for the official press release.
Continue reading Edsel Ford's restored 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster struts its stuff at Pebble Beach [w/video]

Edsel Ford's restored 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster struts its stuff at Pebble Beach [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 15:30:00 EST. Held on the last two holes of the Ritz's golf course, this year's event will host 250 rare cars from private collections and museums, the traditional RM Auction, and will also be GM's splashdown as the first event of the General's 100-year anniversary. It will include the auctioning or appearance of three one-of-a-kind vehicles, and a Trans-Am rumble honoring Parnelli Jones. And who doesn't like the sound of a Trans-Am rumble?

"Deuce" is a reference to the two in 1932, which was the year this legendary car was born, and it's been the most popular starting point for hot rods ever since. The party will also honor the famous Ford Flathead engine. When it debuted, the Deuce cost just $500 and was considered pretty revolutionary. Since then, as Ford puts it, they have been "modified, raced, cruised, deified, celebrated in film, revised, and recreated over the past 75 years." Most of the ones we see today are fiberglass or recreations, so real steel '32s are some of the most desirable vehicles by restorers and hot-rodders alike. Today, restored and high-end versions of the '32 Ford can cost buyers well into six figures, and the flathead engine is just as legendary as the car it came in. Built from 1932 through 1953, the Flatheaed was so strong and easily modified that it practically created hot rodding and today's multi-billion-dollar aftermarket industry.

Now, 75 years later, both car and engine are hall of famers, worthy of a birthday bash. The Ford Motor Company, the MHRA (Michigan Hot Rod Association) and the Early Ford V-8 Club of America are organizing the shindig, which will take place in Dearborn, Michigan, August 9-12, 2007. The party will include a swap meet, a concours d'elegance, cruises, specialty vehicle displays, a drive-in date night and a gathering at Henry Ford's Greenfield Village. Anyone with a 1932 Ford is welcome to register, as are those driving vehicles powered by any Ford Flathead V8. Edsel Ford will be the Honorary Chairman, Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally the Grand Marshal, and Keith Crain, Chairman of Crain Communications Inc., the Executive Advisor.
