With Halloween behind us and most of the spooks and spectres returned to their natural realm, the Ghostbusters gang had some time to kill and headed over to the Las Vegas Convention Center to check out the excitement of SEMA. Fortunately for them they were given a prime parking spot right outside the hall. (We had to park half mile away or catch a cab.) The Ecto-1 attracted a lot of attention throughout the week, possibly because of the Ray Parker, Jr. soundtrack blaring from its stereo. It was a fan favorite for sure, and one of ours as well.

Gallery: SEMA 2008: Ecto-1 in Vegas, baby

Photos copyright (C)2008 Frank Filipponio/Weblogs, Inc.
SEMA 2008: Ecto-1 scares up plenty of attention in Vegas originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 09 Nov 2008 20:02:00 EST. Its simple tagline - Paper Models are Paper Inside - hints at what you'll find below the fold. The site offers numerous free downloads of paper models that arrive in your printer tray as 2D sheets awaiting entry into the third dimension. We chose the Ecto 1 model to highlight above because it's pretty intricate, but you'll also find the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the General Lee, Speed Racer's Mach-5, the Tumbler from Batman Begins, Mad Max's Interceptor and a McLaren MP4-22 race car. That's not to mention the numerous crafts from Star Wars and Start Trek that are also available. If you poke around, you'll also find links out to other paper model sites where even more vehicles are available.

We downloaded a few models in PDF, and were immediately stumped. The assembly instructions for most consist of dozens of pictures, each lacking any verbiage save for the name of a particular paper piece and an arrow showing where it goes. We'll sit down soon with a pair of child-proof scissors and see if we can't crank one out, but we expect this project will quickly turn into a contest of whose paper airplane can fly the farthest.

[Source: Paper Inside via Autoblog Latino]
Model cars made entirely out of paper originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 May 2007 20:03:00 EST. The self-described "nerdy near-adults with interests in "science fiction, computers, technology, and filmmaking" decided that with Halloween just around the corner, they might as well dress as Ghostbusters. Kevin and his friend Will wanted to build homemade backpacks and uniforms, then go into a local hotel on Halloween to prank them. "Essentially we would run out with smoking ghost traps, handing the hotel manager a bill for $5000, and then run away. Then it hit me. 'Will... I'll make you a deal. You build the packs, and I'll build the car.' A few months later Will moved to New York and the plans were shelved."

The following spring, Kevin and his roommate, Austin, got the project started. They started with Kevin's white 1998 Subaru Outback and went to town, adding lightbars, tubes, packs, decals and a lot of hours to make the car into the Ecto-1K. But just days before Halloween, the Ecto was rear-ended by a semi and written off. A replacement 2003 Outback was located, and with insurance money and donations in hand, they rebuilt the Ecto-1K in just a few weeks. The car has made quite a splash in and around Fort Collins. Car shows, comic conventions, parades, and the like. You can read the whole story and see lots of pics by following the Read link. Funny anecdotes abound. We especially liked the idea of just driving it through town at random on weeknights, making those who caught a glimpse of it wonder if they had perhaps been seeing things. Or using it to help snow-stranded motorists get unstuck. Always nice to see someone with an appreciation for fine art, a great sense of humor, and a Subaru putting it all together for the betterment of mankind.

[Source: NASIOC via DieselStation]
Ghosbusters spotted in the Colorado Outback originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 May 2007 14:29:00 EST. We're all about videogames here at Autoblog and we're also down with any nostalgia that can bring back the sights and sounds of the 1980s, so the chance to experience life as a Ghostbuster in all its free-roaming, first-person glory is tantalizing to say the least. It came to us while watching the videos, however, that no vehicle would make a better Ecto 2 than the Dodge Magnum. The videos show the Magnum's European doppelganger, a Chrysler 300 Touring, mainly because they're attributed to game developer Zootfly, which is based in Europe where the 300 wagon is offered. Regardless, were the game produced the Dodge Magnum would likely be the Ecto 2 parked in our firehouse.

Despite the fact that no one knows if these videos show an actual game in development, a mod to a current game or a fanboy's sick homage to the original film, the idea of a reinvigorating the Ghostbusters franchise and making the Dodge Magnum a part of that is something that DCX should seriously consider funding. And why stop at video games? Aren't we all ready for a darker, more serious-in-tone Ghostbusters 3 for the adult crowd? We say this partly because we want to see the nervous sexual tension between Peter Venkman and Dana Barrett on the big screen one more time, but also because marketing opportunities like this don't come along for a manufacturer every day.

If you can think of a better late-model vehicle to play the part of Ecto 2, let us know in the comments. For us, however, the casting couch is closed.

Check out all three videos of the mysterious Ghostbusters game after the jump.

[Source: Joystiq]
Continue reading DCX could own Ecto 2 in new Ghostbusters video game

DCX could own Ecto 2 in new Ghostbusters video game originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Jan 2007 14:04:00 EST.
