At the Beijing Motor Show today, Ford is unveiling a sub-Fiesta-sized low-cost commuter car concept with a brand new engine. While the car itself – dubbed Start, above – is interesting, the real news is the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. At this time, the car is a pure design study with no production plans. The new inline-three cylinder EcoBoost engine, on the other hand, has been confirmed for production.

On Tuesday, Ford's VP of global powertrain development Barb Samardzich will be addressing the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit and Ecoboost will again be at the top of her agenda. Samardzich will confirm that before the end of this year, three more Ecoboost engines will be in production at Ford. When the auto show circuit rolls around to Paris in September, Ford is expected to roll out a facelifted version of the Mondeo mid-sized lineup. The visual updates are less extensive than the Fusion got last year but still noticeable. A new upper grille and larger trapezoidal lower opening give the Mondeo an appearance similar to the Fiesta and new Focus. Following the trend set by Audi and Mercedes-Benz, Ford will add LED running lamps below the main headlamp clusters.

At the Detroit Auto Show next month, Ford will be announcing details on its first four cylinder EcoBoost engine. That is expected to be a 1.6L engine which will be built in the UK starting in 2010. In October, the company announced a $110 million investment at its Bridgend plant in Wales for the new engine.
