Mercedes previews 2014 E63 AMG with family-style teaser

Just days after giving us the straight dope on its new, 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz has dropped a fast-moving E-Class family photo on its Facebook page, which happens to include the heretofore-unseen E63 AMG.

The image comes, unfortunately, with no information about the new E63, but we do get our first good look at the undisguised front fascia, wheels and body kit for the car - all aggressively revised versus the standard 2014 E-Class sedan. In fact, the face of the E63 has much more in common with that of its new Coupe sister than the basic four-door.

Car and Driver has previously stated that the 2014 E63 will make use of a twin-turbocharged V8 making 550 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque, and it's rumored the muscle sedan will offer all-wheel drive. As the new model is destined to debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week, we expect to have full information on the car in short order, too.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class refreshed down to its sheetmetal

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is here, and it's had a lot more work done than just a little plastic surgery. Four years into the current model's lifecycle, the changes begin with the unusual step of a serious sheetmetal rearrangement: gone are the four headlights we've seen on the segment leader for 17 years, and gone are the light-relief pontoons over the rear wheels. In front, the one-piece headlights contain LED signatures that 'break' them into two segments, but the main lighting functions have been consolidated into a single lens. Full LED headlights will be available for the first time.

Around the lights, the new E-Class will come with a choice of two grille treatments: the luxury version is a showcase in chrome, with a three-bar center section topped by a Mercedes three-pointed star ornament on the hood; the sport version (pictured) is muted, with a two-bar center section supporting a large Mercedes emblem. Beneath either one of them, the lower fascia takes on a more aggressive shape with larger twin scoops outboard.

Down the body, the pontoon detail has been replaced by a stronger and lower trim line that runs to just beyond the rear wheels, and beneath that is another character line that describes wheel arches. Two-tone LED taillamps laid horizontally emphasize the sedan's width. Inside, the dash is separated into two zones with a horizontal element in one of three finishes, and features a new dash cluster and head unit design.

Among the eleven new and enhanced safety systems are some that borrow from the coming S-Class, the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera now able to build a three-dimensional view of what's ahead at a distance of up to 1,650 feet. The systems it serves can detect the speed and position of vehicles in front and those crossing, and can detect pedestrians.

Underhood, buyers can opt for a four-cylinder diesel with 190 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque in the E320 BlueTec, and pair it with 4Matic all-wheel drive for the first time. The E400 Hybrid also joins the ranks next year, bringing 24 city and 30 highway mpg with it. The V6 E3560 and V8 E550 will continue, and all come with stop/start and are are yoked to a seven-speed automatic.

We'll see them in person at the Detroit Auto Show, and that's where we'll get more information on the E63 AMG that will arrive in the Fall. There's a press release below chock full of details, and a high-res gallery above if you want your dessert first.

It's an interesting time for Germany's premium performers here in North America. Audi isn't offering any RS models - at least not until the long wait for its TT RS ends. BMW is still cruising along with M3 sales and its new price-leader 1 Series M Coupe while we look forward to the next M5 in May 2012. Over at Porsche, the 911, after a record 30 variations on the 997 theme, is almost ready to give way to the 991 generation - a car we expect to test this fall.

Into this lull before the next blitzkrieg jumps the revamped 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. And while we've just driven it in idyllic southern France, it won't actually arrive in the U.S. until mid-September. At least the folks in Affalterbach assure us that U.S. dealers will continue to get a steady stream of the current (and much loved) E63 right up until this freshened one arrives. Of course, if you can't wait for the 2012 E63, there are similar AMG treatments on sale in the CLS-, CL- and S-Class.

For those fortunate few who already have one of the final 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 E63s on order, DO NOT CANCEL! Even though this new E63 with its M157 biturbo 5.5-liter V8 is a thing of greatness, we so love the outgoing car's booming M156 powerplant that you should harbor no regrets in welcoming the 2011 model into your garage. Still, we'd be lying if we didn't report that the updated model is slightly improved in certain ways. Better still, Mercedes-Benz is spreading the message that the E63's base pricing will not go up at all, so it should still start at $87,600.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has been unwrapped at the New York Auto Show having gained a new, more economical lease on life thanks to the brand's 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8. For 2012, Mercedes-Benz is offering the mill in two levels of crazy, with either 518 horsepower in the regular E63, or 550 if you opt for the AMG sport package. That much grunt shuffles the standard car to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds on to a top speed of 155 mph, or 4.3 seconds and 186 mph if you drop the extra coin for the sport pack.

Like its kissing but shapelier cousin, the CLS63 AMG, the 5.5-liter engine channels its substantial resources through AMG's Speedshift MCT seven-speed transmission. We've sampled and enjoyed the unusual gearbox before, and this one also has a "Controlled Efficiency" mode, which is Mercedes-speak for a stop-start function.

Despite the looney power and performance figures, Mercedes says its big sedan is 22 percent more efficient than last year's model, thanks to the new powerplant. To help keep things green(ish), the new heart sports spray-guided direct injection thanks to a set of piezo injectors. Mercedes has even gone so far as to develop an eco-friendly power steering setup which saves fuel by only drawing power when the wheel is being turned.

Inside, the car gets a new sports steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles and flat top and bottom sections. For those who go with the AMG sport package, the wheel is trimmed in Alcantara for the last word in racy luxury.

Mercedes-Benz has released the skinny on the upgrades the company has planned for next year's E63 AMG, at least for European buyers. According to the German automaker, the four-door will come from the factory with an extra 11 horsepower, thanks largely to new tuning. That bumps the final figure to 525 ponies, though the Silver Arrow claims that it has managed to increase the mill's efficiency as well - cutting consumption by a full 12 percent. Of course, that's assuming that you can keep from bumping the redline on that big 6.3-liter V8 every time you leave a stoplight, something you're sure to want to do.

We're not sure whether buyers will actually be able to feel that 11 horsepower bump, either, but odds are that they will notice some key changes to the interior. Mercedes-Benz is offering the 2011 E63 AMG with a slew of interior niceties as standard equipment. The company has skinned the dash and door panels in Artico leather, and the center console will henceforth be dipped in a piano black lacquer finish for good measure - both of which used to be optional. We can't speak for the power and efficiency updates, but we have confirmed with Benz reps in the States that the interior upgrades are headed to U.S. showrooms, so chances are this is a good look at what we can expect when the 2011 E63 AMG hits our shores. Conducting utterly inappropriate comparison tests is completely par for the course at Top Gear. After all, these were the guys that pitted a Ford Fiesta against a Chevrolet Corvette and a Jaguar XK120 against a Vincent Black Shadow and a train. In this week's latest episode Richard Hammond samples the new Chevrolet Camaro SS with its lovely 6.2-liter small-block V8 and then pulls out a slightly different kind of 6.2-liter V8 powered car.

Frankly, we doubt many (if any!) people are actually cross-shopping the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG against the Camaro SS, but it sure is entertaining to watch the big German power-sliding around the air-strip test track at the hands of The Stig. With any luck, this episode will be the last time that we get to hear the Stig lapping to the less-than-dulcet tones of the vuvuzela. To our hearts and minds the Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon needs nothing. That hasn't stopped GWA Tuning from adding to the monstrous estate, and we'll leave it to you to give thanks, or not, that they feel differently than us. The package includes a new grille and front bumper with fierce set of LED-adorned intakes beneath the 'knees,' new side sills and rear diffuser, plus some ducting here and there for good measure.

That's the standard kit. If you need more, grab the entire swine and request the lowered stance on staggered wheels - 19s in front, 20s in back - body-colored GWA wheels, and the remote-controlled exhaust butterflies. And beyond that remote you wouldn't know anything had been done, since GWA's only modifications are aluminum pedals and illuminated door sills. The base package needs €15,000 ($18,500 U.S.) of your attention, the top flight kit needing about €22,000 ($27,200 U.S.).

If you thought the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG was a top performer, well... you were right. It is. But everything's got room for improvement, and Väth Automobiltechnik has made that room for the Benz supersled with a similar V63RS package as it fitted to its C-Class-based offering.

Starting under the hood, Väth bored out the cylinders, fitted new pistons, valves, cam shafts, intake and tweaked the ECU for an extra 87 horsepower, bringing the total up to 605. The result? 0-100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in a scant 4.1 seconds, and a top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph).

The tuning house has also fitted a body kit complete with new grille, spoilers front and rear and a carbon fiber diffuser, 20-inch modular rims, a suspension dropped by 30 millimeters, and huge 390mm brake discs gripped by eight-piston calipers up front. Nice work if you can get it, but you'll need plenty of cash on hand if you do. Details in the press release after the jump.

The most pressing things we have to say about the 2010 Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon here at the Frankfurt Motor Show have nothing to do with the wagon. On the car itself, everything about it makes us go "Hot!" It's got 525 hp and 464 lb-ft from AMG's well known naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V8, it's got badass written in every body panel, and it's got the room and undercover cred of a wagon. It is also most tasteful inside, the carbon fiber trim playing its beautifully woven support notes for the cream interior.

But once past the "Hot!" the only thing looking at the E63 AMG Wagon does it make us drop to our knees and hold our heads in our hands, wondering why Mercedes won't give us an E63 AMG Coupe. The real reason, not the hints and obfuscations. Then we could have one of each. And be happy for the rest of our lives. Don't worry, Mercedes, we don't mind starting with the wagon. But don't be too long with that coupe, all right?

AMG is slowly raising the level of every car in the specialty line, and now the E63 AMG takes its place among the truly sporty offerings from Affalterbach. The specs fit the mold of bigger better more, with 518 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, matching the S Class number for number. The thing to pay attention to this time around is the car's sporting cred: a 4.4-second to sixty mph time via the 7-speed dual clutch transmission from the SL63 AMG, 3-stage ESP, AMG Ride Control sports suspension with steel spring struts up front and air springs with electronically-controlled damping out back, and four driving modes. Mercedes-Benz teases the next E63 AMG

The new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has yet to be introduced (we're guessing it'll make an appearance in New York next month), but the readers of Germany's Sport Auto magazine are going to have a shot at winning the new über-sedan as part of the sweepstakes that accompanies the buff book's annual reader's choice awards. In honor of the occasion, Mercedes has pulled a Lutz and given a quick upskirt peek at the front end. What's it look like? Well, as you can see, it's pretty much what you'd expect from an AMG ride: updated fascia, aero kit, big split-spoke wheels that show off bigger, upgraded brakes, etc. The normally-aspirated 6.2 (+ .1 for old-times' sake) liter V8 belts out 525 horsepower. Bring money. You know you're gonna need it. We'll have more for you on the new AMG E-Class as soon as more deets become available.

Spy Shots: Twin-turbo M5 and M7 prototypes

Will the M5 get a twin-turbo and be joined by an M7? Mr. Lehmann and Co. have caught an M5 and a 7-Series with extra ventage. It's hypothesized that Audi has understated the RS6's pony count, telling the world it's 580 when it's actually 600. And now with both Mercedes and Audi outdoing the M in the horsepower war, the theory is that that's an insult BMW simply cannot allow. Hence the addition of double-barrel blowers to equalize the equation.

As for the possibility of an M7, all there is to see are a large scoop at the front of the hood and two smaller scoops at the rear. With years of AMG S-Classes and Audi S8's behind us, if there is an M7 on the way, all we can say is: it's about time.

Mercedes releases performance pack for the E 63 AMG

Mercedes' in-house witch doctors at the AMG Performance Studio have put the finishing touches on a new performance pack for the monstrous E 63 AMG sedan. Since the car's pretty much got the engine performance piece handled, what with its 514-horsepower V8, the labcoats at AMG decided to create a package that ensures the car's handling chops match the incredible juice pulsating underhood.

The new kit includes a silver-painted unequal-width 18" wheel/tire package, a stiffer, sportier AIRMATIC suspension, a new rear differential set up to provide more traction when powering out of corners, and for the driver, a new sport steering wheel with silver shift paddles. The performance package will lighten buyers' wallets by €7,140 ($9,274), but if it turns the AMG E-Class into a more serious corner-carver, owners will probably think the cost of entry is worth every penny. And here we were thinking the "Plain Jane" AMG E was sufficient. Silly us.

Mercedes-Benz unleashes AMG sports package for E-Class

Everything new out of Mercedes-Benz doesn't always reach our radar... that is until the acronym AMG enters the picture. Such is the case with the new generation E-Class. Announced at the New York Auto Show, we weren't too taken aback by the new E-Class on account of its evolutionary upgrades, including a subtle restyle that begs not to be noticed.

If you feel a little too wet behind the ears to handle the 514-hp E63 AMG, then you could opt for the new AMG sports package that adds unique items like a new front apron with larger cooling inlets, a pair of chrome-tipped tailpipes and 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. While the sports package isn't a true AMG overhaul since the engines in the E350 and E500 have been left alone, their suspensions have been firmed up with steel springs and their steering sharpened a bit. Cross-drilled rotors and special silver calipers also portend this package's sporting intentions.

Inside the cockpit the AMG treatment continues with unique color combinations and the use of special ARTICO man-made leather. The seats have been recontoured to provide better lateral support and the stock steering wheel has been replaced with an AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel.

Despite the lack of engine upgrades, an E-Class with the AMG sports package will accelerate faster thanks to the 7G-TRONIC Sport transmission, which, when used in manual mode, will shave an additional .2 seconds off your blast to sixty.

Pricing for the new package ranges from € 4,611 to € 5,365 ($5,692 to $6,623 US). It will be available in June, although the fact MB provided pricing in Euro doesn't bode well for North American inclusion anytime soon.
