Station wagons, as pointed out by ex-Autoblogger Jonny Lieberman, are boring. "It's the penalty you pay for falling in love and having children," he says.

Sure, just so long as your children like to go fast, at least when the chosen conveyance to move those booster seats from Point A to Point B is either the wagon version of the Cadillac CTS-V or Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, as tested by Motor Trend in the video you'll see after the break.

Without spoiling any of the salient details, we'll say that one car was a wee bit quicker, crossing the finish line a scant 79 feet ahead of its rival after a half-mile of acceleration to speeds surpassing 150 miles per hour, while the other was deemed the overall better car for enthusiast drivers.

Four-door supercars line up, drag out their differences

The latest BMW M5, Jaguar XFR, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Porsche Panamera S all have lots of things in common. They all have four doors, V8 engines underhood, hail from high-end European automakers known for luxury and performance and can all be had for a wee bit under $100,000.

But which one is fastest?

Well, that depends on how you're planning to measure speed. Do you mean top speed? The time it takes to circle a given race track? Or do you mean in a drag race, the quintessential way to compare a car's ability to accelerate in a straight line?

If that's the case, you'll find your answer in the video after the break. You'll see each of the aforementioned automobiles lined up against one another, racing flat-out over the distance of 1,000 meters.

Class action lawsuit to be filed against Mercedes alleges AMG V8 defects

Mercedes-Benz is reportedly facing a class-action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey for alleged defects in the company's M156 V8. According to the plaintiffs, premature internal wear occurs because the engine uses cast nodular iron camshafts and 9310-grade steel valves. Something about that combination causes early failure, either due to improper offset of the components or inadequate heat treating. The plaintiffs also allege that Mercedes-Benz and AMG have known about the issue since 2007, when Daimler released a service bulletin on the problem. At this point, it's unclear how many engines this alleged defect covers, or exactly when or if the lawsuit will go to trial.

The M156 V8 - one of the snarliest and best-sounding engines we've ever driven - has served as the powerhouse for a wide range of AMG vehicles. The 6.3-liter lump actually displaces 6.2 liters, but churns out 525 horsepower in its newest iteration. The engine has found its way into vehicles like the C63 AMG, E63 AMG, ML63 AMG and SL63 AMG, among others. Head over to BenzBoost for a look at the full lawsuit.

It's an interesting time for Germany's premium performers here in North America. Audi isn't offering any RS models - at least not until the long wait for its TT RS ends. BMW is still cruising along with M3 sales and its new price-leader 1 Series M Coupe while we look forward to the next M5 in May 2012. Over at Porsche, the 911, after a record 30 variations on the 997 theme, is almost ready to give way to the 991 generation - a car we expect to test this fall.

Into this lull before the next blitzkrieg jumps the revamped 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. And while we've just driven it in idyllic southern France, it won't actually arrive in the U.S. until mid-September. At least the folks in Affalterbach assure us that U.S. dealers will continue to get a steady stream of the current (and much loved) E63 right up until this freshened one arrives. Of course, if you can't wait for the 2012 E63, there are similar AMG treatments on sale in the CLS-, CL- and S-Class.

For those fortunate few who already have one of the final 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 E63s on order, DO NOT CANCEL! Even though this new E63 with its M157 biturbo 5.5-liter V8 is a thing of greatness, we so love the outgoing car's booming M156 powerplant that you should harbor no regrets in welcoming the 2011 model into your garage. Still, we'd be lying if we didn't report that the updated model is slightly improved in certain ways. Better still, Mercedes-Benz is spreading the message that the E63's base pricing will not go up at all, so it should still start at $87,600.

2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will offer E63 AMG wagon, AWD-only E550

According to a leaked dealer order guide for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class range, we red-blooded Yankees might be able to once again sink our teeth into the super-hot E63 AMG Estate. As you'll recall, Mercedes-Benz decided not to offer the new-for-2010 E63 wagon here in the States, but that is wrong is reportedly being righted for 2012. BenzBoost.com reports that the cargo-hauling AMG stunner will be available for U.S. customers later this year, powered by the same twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 that debuted in the E63 sedan at last month's New York Auto Show, complete with start/stop technology and mated to a seven-speed MCT dual-clutch transmission.

We can already picture the inevitable E63 AMG Wagon vs. Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon battle, and it looks awesome.

In other E-Class news, BenzBoost reports that the E550 sedan - which gets a new 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 - will only be available with 4Matic all-wheel drive. A similar move was made to the 2011 CL550 coupe, which uses the same engine and is no longer available in a two-wheel-drive configuration. Stay tuned for the official details later this year.

AMG started putting wrenches to Benzes back in 1967, and 44 years later we're still fawning over its products. From the C to the E and all the way up to the SLS, Mercedes-Benz vehicles that wear those three letters on the back are sure to get our blood flowing. The two German companies have formed a valuable partnership, and we expect more amazing vehicles for years to come.

Before looking too deep into the future, however, it's time to take a look at the past. Mercedes-Benz has prepared a video that provides a brief visual history lesson. The text in the video may have been ported over courtesy of Google Translate, but the meaning is clearly conveyed. Click past the jump to view a video timeline of AMG's history.

New York 2011: 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG gets a twin-turbo heart transplant

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has been unwrapped at the New York Auto Show having gained a new, more economical lease on life thanks to the brand's 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8. For 2012, Mercedes-Benz is offering the mill in two levels of crazy, with either 518 horsepower in the regular E63, or 550 if you opt for the AMG sport package. That much grunt shuffles the standard car to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds on to a top speed of 155 mph, or 4.3 seconds and 186 mph if you drop the extra coin for the sport pack.

Like its kissing but shapelier cousin, the CLS63 AMG, the 5.5-liter engine channels its substantial resources through AMG's Speedshift MCT seven-speed transmission. We've sampled and enjoyed the unusual gearbox before, and this one also has a "Controlled Efficiency" mode, which is Mercedes-speak for a stop-start function.

Despite the looney power and performance figures, Mercedes says its big sedan is 22 percent more efficient than last year's model, thanks to the new powerplant. To help keep things green(ish), the new heart sports spray-guided direct injection thanks to a set of piezo injectors. Mercedes has even gone so far as to develop an eco-friendly power steering setup which saves fuel by only drawing power when the wheel is being turned.

Inside, the car gets a new sports steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles and flat top and bottom sections. For those who go with the AMG sport package, the wheel is trimmed in Alcantara for the last word in racy luxury.

Mercedes-Benz has released the skinny on the upgrades the company has planned for next year's E63 AMG, at least for European buyers. According to the German automaker, the four-door will come from the factory with an extra 11 horsepower, thanks largely to new tuning. That bumps the final figure to 525 ponies, though the Silver Arrow claims that it has managed to increase the mill's efficiency as well - cutting consumption by a full 12 percent. Of course, that's assuming that you can keep from bumping the redline on that big 6.3-liter V8 every time you leave a stoplight, something you're sure to want to do.

We're not sure whether buyers will actually be able to feel that 11 horsepower bump, either, but odds are that they will notice some key changes to the interior. Mercedes-Benz is offering the 2011 E63 AMG with a slew of interior niceties as standard equipment. The company has skinned the dash and door panels in Artico leather, and the center console will henceforth be dipped in a piano black lacquer finish for good measure - both of which used to be optional. We can't speak for the power and efficiency updates, but we have confirmed with Benz reps in the States that the interior upgrades are headed to U.S. showrooms, so chances are this is a good look at what we can expect when the 2011 E63 AMG hits our shores. Conducting utterly inappropriate comparison tests is completely par for the course at Top Gear. After all, these were the guys that pitted a Ford Fiesta against a Chevrolet Corvette and a Jaguar XK120 against a Vincent Black Shadow and a train. In this week's latest episode Richard Hammond samples the new Chevrolet Camaro SS with its lovely 6.2-liter small-block V8 and then pulls out a slightly different kind of 6.2-liter V8 powered car.

Frankly, we doubt many (if any!) people are actually cross-shopping the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG against the Camaro SS, but it sure is entertaining to watch the big German power-sliding around the air-strip test track at the hands of The Stig. With any luck, this episode will be the last time that we get to hear the Stig lapping to the less-than-dulcet tones of the vuvuzela. To our hearts and minds the Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon needs nothing. That hasn't stopped GWA Tuning from adding to the monstrous estate, and we'll leave it to you to give thanks, or not, that they feel differently than us. The package includes a new grille and front bumper with fierce set of LED-adorned intakes beneath the 'knees,' new side sills and rear diffuser, plus some ducting here and there for good measure.

That's the standard kit. If you need more, grab the entire swine and request the lowered stance on staggered wheels - 19s in front, 20s in back - body-colored GWA wheels, and the remote-controlled exhaust butterflies. And beyond that remote you wouldn't know anything had been done, since GWA's only modifications are aluminum pedals and illuminated door sills. The base package needs €15,000 ($18,500 U.S.) of your attention, the top flight kit needing about €22,000 ($27,200 U.S.).

One does not buy the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG to drive to and from the country club. Nor do they lay down the $85,750 it takes to call the ballistic sedan their very own so that they can make the morning commute in style and sophistication. They pick up the tweaked four door because they know that with years of training and a little luck, they too can hoon the tires off of the car just like in the video after the jump.

Mercedes-Benz has gone ahead and beat every auto journo on the planet to the punch by releasing a video of the 6.3-liter V8 doing what it does best. Some lucky driver was turned loose on a wet Brooklands track to kick the tail around in beautiful fashion, and there's plenty of fancy camera work to help keep our jaws permanently glued to the floor. Throw in the rumble of the sedan's beating heart, and you've got the perfect answer to the mid-week doldrums. Lewis Hamilton would approve of the world-class hoonage, and so do we - so check out the action after the jump.

As some of you may have read, I was pretty smitten with the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. In case you somehow missed the buttery prose (for shame, for shame!), I described the sound of the big, bad, naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 as, "Angry, guttural, aggravated and very, very masculine. Even at idle, it sounds like it's pissed off and ready to dish out some wrath of God-type violence. Street legal sedans don't sound like this."

But wouldn't it be nice if you could hear what I'm bloviating about? Well friends, today you can!

Thanks to a good buddy of mine named Luis Galdames, we have some high-quality sound files of the E63 AMG tearing stuff (mostly asphalt) up. Aside from recently winning a Golden Reel award for his sound mixing work on the FOX television show House, Luis also recorded all the engine sounds for NBC's short-lived but quite comical Knight Rider remake. In other words, he knows his stuff.

After the jump we have three sound clips for your amusement. The first is of Luis standing behind the car and as I rev the mighty V8 up to around 6,000 rpm before side-stepping the brake pedal and launching. Listen close and at the end you can hear the car downshifting as I get on the brakes. The second clip was my favorite to record. Luis asked I fly by him at 100 mph and shift from third to fourth as I passed. We had to do a few takes for that one. And the third clip perfectly sums up the E63 AMG -- one of the best cars I've ever driven. Make the jump and enjoy.

Väth Automobiltechnik takes the Mercedes E63 AMG from the epic to the extreme

If you thought the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG was a top performer, well... you were right. It is. But everything's got room for improvement, and Väth Automobiltechnik has made that room for the Benz supersled with a similar V63RS package as it fitted to its C-Class-based offering.

Starting under the hood, Väth bored out the cylinders, fitted new pistons, valves, cam shafts, intake and tweaked the ECU for an extra 87 horsepower, bringing the total up to 605. The result? 0-100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in a scant 4.1 seconds, and a top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph).

The tuning house has also fitted a body kit complete with new grille, spoilers front and rear and a carbon fiber diffuser, 20-inch modular rims, a suspension dropped by 30 millimeters, and huge 390mm brake discs gripped by eight-piston calipers up front. Nice work if you can get it, but you'll need plenty of cash on hand if you do. Details in the press release after the jump.

Essen 2009: Brabus tweaks the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

Don't have enough money for Brabus to swap out the V8 in your E63 AMG for a V12? Not to worry. Today at the Essen Motor Show, the German tuner officially launched its B63 S performance package for 6.2-liter V8 in the four-door Benz. The upgrade consists of dual "sport" air filters, high-flow catalytic converters, and revised program for the engine and results in a 30 horsepower increase.

Brabus is also offering other modifications for the E63 AMG as well, including a carbon fiber aero kit, wheels in 18 to 20-inch sizes, and various interior trim pieces like stainless-steel scuff plates, a new 225 mph speedometer, and wood or carbon fiber inlays. The world's sickly economy not withstanding, selling luxury vehicles is easy. From the suppleness of a swatch of leather to the exquisite graining on a piece of rare wood veneer to having every electronic gewgaw available at one's fingertips, what defines a luxury car is essentially self-evident. To a substantial degree, everyone knows quality and true luxury when they see and feel it. The same cannot be so easily said when it comes to matters of high performance.

Selling luxury may be easy, but as AMG has figured out, selling high-performance is a heck of a lot more fun.

As one of the globe's premiere aspirational brands, Mercedes-Benz would appear to have the luxury selling routine knocked. But the company's AMG performance division has become an increasingly prominent part of its portfolio and bottom line, and these vehicles attract a different sort of customer and require a different marketing approach. Thankfully, as AMG has become increasingly important to Mercedes, its product line has risen in quality and dynamic performance. But while luxury and quality are easily conveyed, how do you sell four-wheeled thrills?

The thing is, as an automotive marketer, you can preach how great your sports car is until you're blue in the face, but until you're able to really show people how superior your vehicle is, you're never going to win them all over. Mercedes has offered its AMG driving program overseas for some time now, but this year is the first time they've brought the experience to the States. With events at Connecticut's storied Lime Rock Park, Florida's Palm Beach International Raceway, and California's legendary Laguna Seca, the venues Mercedes has chosen are certainly top-notch. But what about the experience? We had to find out for ourselves.

The most pressing things we have to say about the 2010 Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon here at the Frankfurt Motor Show have nothing to do with the wagon. On the car itself, everything about it makes us go "Hot!" It's got 525 hp and 464 lb-ft from AMG's well known naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V8, it's got badass written in every body panel, and it's got the room and undercover cred of a wagon. It is also most tasteful inside, the carbon fiber trim playing its beautifully woven support notes for the cream interior.

But once past the "Hot!" the only thing looking at the E63 AMG Wagon does it make us drop to our knees and hold our heads in our hands, wondering why Mercedes won't give us an E63 AMG Coupe. The real reason, not the hints and obfuscations. Then we could have one of each. And be happy for the rest of our lives. Don't worry, Mercedes, we don't mind starting with the wagon. But don't be too long with that coupe, all right?

AMG is slowly raising the level of every car in the specialty line, and now the E63 AMG takes its place among the truly sporty offerings from Affalterbach. The specs fit the mold of bigger better more, with 518 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, matching the S Class number for number. The thing to pay attention to this time around is the car's sporting cred: a 4.4-second to sixty mph time via the 7-speed dual clutch transmission from the SL63 AMG, 3-stage ESP, AMG Ride Control sports suspension with steel spring struts up front and air springs with electronically-controlled damping out back, and four driving modes. A covered up E63 AMG Wagon has been caught doing the rounds on public roads before we see it in showrooms some time next year. It looks like the potential ungainliness of the new E-Class could be gracefully smoothed out by the longer lines of the wagon. Of course, even if it is still ungainly, you'll get 85 extra horsepower over the current model, which should let you get away from gawkers with increased alacrity. That also means the baby on board might need a G-suit. The "Duplo" rear lights are probably mule-only fitments, but they'd be pretty cool if they were wrapped in polished housings.

Spy Shots: 2009 Mercedes-Benz E63

The launch of the next Mercedes-Benz E-class is right around the corner and Car's spies were able to catch a mildly camo'd mule undergoing testing. The prototype is unmistakably M-B, with a new front fascia that appears to split the difference between the swoop CLS's headlamps and the more conservative eyes of the C- and S-class. Underneath the cloaked sheet metal is Mercedes' new W212 mid-size sedan platform, which ditches the electronic braking system of the last generation (Benz dealers rejoice!) in favor of conventional hydraulic stoppers, and utilizes a four-link front suspension and a multi-link rear arrangement coupled with M-B's Active Body Control (ABC) system. Naturally, there will be gizmos galore, including a new electronic road sign reading system, night-vision pulled from the S-class and a host of gasoline- and diesel-powered engines that will top out with the 6.2-liter V8 from AMG.

According to Car, the new E will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March, with sales beginning later that summer.
