Ford, Holden and Nissan introduced their V8 Supercar challengers a while back. Erebus Motorport, whose racing program got the green light not even 120 days ago, has finally shown off the Mercedes-Benz E-Class racer that will complete this year's field of entries. The first AMG race car ever to be built outside of Germany, it's an Australian-built tube-frame chassis specced to the series' Car of Tomorrow rules, fitted with body panels that channel the E63 AMG.

Supported by AMG Customer Motorsport, the 5.0-liter engine is provided by HWA in Germany, the racing arm of AMG. Regulations dictate that it have roughly 650 horsepower, a redline between 7,000 and 7,500 rpm and a torque curve that matches the parity baseline set for all cars.

Lee Holdsworth, Tim Slade and Maro Engel will drive the three team cars, each with different sponsors. Their first showing will be at the Clipsal 500 on March 3 in Adelaide, here in the US we'll get to see them in May at the Circuit of the Americas. Check out the videos below of the Erebus car starting up at its launch, and footage of all of this year's cars doing pre-season testing on track together.
Continue reading Erebus Motorsport Mercedes E-Class V8 Supercar completes the field [w/videos]

Erebus Motorsport Mercedes E-Class V8 Supercar completes the field [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 23 Feb 2013 16:59:00 EST.
Maybe you saw our recent blog snippet on a bunch of US journos getting pulled over in the middle of nowhere in Catalunya, Spain, for driving a bunch of new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG models. By all accounts, they weren't speeding - which makes me softly guffaw. I was there in that group, yet I had taken the more direct route into the mountains from Barcelona so that I could... well, so that I could go faster. No one hassled me and I had the Autovia all to myself. And it was the goodniks - the team players - who got nabbed because Spain had decided to suddenly enforce the never enforced "must carry an international driver's license" clause of the highway code.

The departing E63 AMG with 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque from its M157 5.5-liter biturbo V8 hasn't exactly been poorly received. It isn't as crisp as, nor as pleasantly evil as its C63 AMG kid brother, but we generally accept that the heavier and larger car will always feel, well, heavier and larger.

As part of the 2014 E-class mid-cycle redesign, Affalterbach decided to give its E63 AMG more power and torque for the occasion. The base car now gives off 550 hp and 531 lb-ft, while the hotter S version I tested (formerly the AMG Performance Pack) produces 577 hp and 590 lb-ft. The other big novelty is that E63 sedans will be available with both rear- and all-wheel drive, while all US-spec E63 wagons will be 4Matic equipped.

Driving Notes

All S-trimmed AMGs come standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive, as well as an AMG-specific 4Matic clutch pack integrated neatly to the rear of the 7G-Tronic gearbox housing. This unit really alters the game of the E63.

While the pumped-up standard E63 with rear-wheel drive now reels off 0-60 runs in an estimated 4.2 seconds, this E63 S with AMG 4Matic can straight-line to 60 mph in just 3.6. Compared to the non-S E63, this S rips it up at low revs when urged.

Not much has been altered for the chassis and suspension layout, so the ride and handling on the 19-inch Pirelli PZero treads - 255/35 front, 285/30 rear - and AMG sport suspension is entirely familiar. Merc knows how to coddle me Euro-style, even in an AMG model.

Things do get pretty hardcore due to the constant fore/aft torque split percentages of 33/67 via the AMG-specific 4Matic. (Non-AMG 4Matic E-Class models run a default 45/55 split, and it varies depending on road and driving conditions.)

Along with a completely new front axle to accommodate 4Matic and a more aggressive front wheel camber, there is a quicker 14.0:1 steering ratio versus standard E-class models at 17.4:1. The more hardcore AMG setup is programmed to be 25 percent heavier feeling than the Sport settings of the series car.

The steering action while driving along those Spanish curves was impressive, assisted by the rear axle mechanical differential lock that is standard on S models. This, coupled with the throttle's newfound urgency, makes for a far more aggressive E-class AMG than I've ever experienced. It's almost more along the lines of a C63 Black Series, honestly, yet more predictable at the hardest speeds.

The few tunnels that I shot through were perfect opportunities to shamelessly downshift and listen to the four-tip sport exhaust with the windows cranked down. (See our Short Cut video below.) The twin turbos make for a lower 6,500-rpm redline, but the rumble is as good as what we've come to expect from anything wearing an AMG badge.

My only trouble came from the AMG Speedshift version of the 7G-Tronic semi-automatic transmission. In Sport Plus or Manual modes, this transmission as programmed is awkward at times. The trouble is the ultra-conservative settings for upshifts, downshifts, and throttle response when called upon to punch hard from low speeds or in transitions. It is reassuring that Benz promises they are working hard on exactly this issue.

All of the redesigned E-class AMG models will arrive in August, and while Mercedes-Benz USA does not yet have exact pricing to announce, the rear-wheel-drive sedan should not vary greatly from its current price of $89,800 due to "current sensitivities in the marketplace." Adding 4Matic to the sedan and wagon (current base price $92,400) should set you back around $3,500. Want the S version in 4Matic sedan or wagon flavor? Be prepared for a further $15,000 hit.

A group of American auto writers found themselves on the wrong side of the Spanish police recently while driving the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG through Catalonia. According to Motoramic, officers stopped around 18 writers, though not for disobeying any local traffic laws. Instead, the members of the group were detained for not being able to produce an international driver's license despite the fact that an IDL isn't a legal document, requires no test and simply states in several languages that the holder possess a valid US license. The writers were held on the side of the road before being moved to a parking lot for around two hours.

And what of their high-performance sedans? Police impounded six of the cars, each worth around $100,000. A representative from Mercedes-Benz eventually arrived to help free the writers, though Motoramic says the cars themselves remained in Spanish custody. Mercedes-Benz spokesperson Christian Bokich said, "No fines were paid, no charges were brought and no bribes were given."
Spanish authorities impound fleet of Mercedes E63 AMGs on media test drive originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 10 Feb 2013 17:00:00 EST.
Bruce Hornsby and his soothing piano skills helped introduce us to the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but the monstrous E63 AMG sedan needed no entrance music as it rumbled on stage. The 550-horsepower (and up) sedan sat proudly alongside the rest of the redesigned E-Class on stage at the Detroit Auto Show, but stood miles apart in intention and execution.

In addition to a choice of sedan and wagon body styles, the E63 AMG will also offer buyers the choice of the standard 550 hp or an upgraded 577-hp S-Model; regardless of output, all 2014 E63 AMG models will come standard with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

We already saw the E63 AMG's aggressive styling last week, but now we have a full assortment of live images for you to enjoy as well as the Mercedes-Benz press release, which is also posted below.
Continue reading 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG rumbles on stage 4Matic style

2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG rumbles on stage 4Matic style originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 Jan 2013 15:28:00 EST.
Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to introduce the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4Matic in both sedan and wagon variants. It's best to get right to business, that being the numbers produced by the twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 located in the engine bay of one of the fastest sedans in the world. The 'base' model gets a boost of 32 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque for a final output of 550 hp and 531 lb-ft. A high performance S-Model - the US-market wagon will only be an S-Model - gets even more besides, putting out 577 hp and 590 lb-ft.

The standard sedan gets from 0-to-60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, the S-Model sedan taking a tenth off.

All that power gets to the ground through the AMG Speedshift MCT dual-clutch transmission with Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Manual modes. The juice is then routed through the permanent "performance-oriented" all-wheel drive signified by the 4Matic moniker, which is biased 33/67 front-to-rear. The AWD system adds just 154 pounds to the car's weight.

Not that you'd know it, nor mind. Put to use, the standard sedan gets from 0-to-60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, the S-Model sedan taking a tenth off that time, the S-Model wagon matching it at 3.6 seconds. Top speed for the 550-hp sedan is an electronically-limited 155 mph, while the AMG Performance Package boosts that to an electronically-limited 186 mph. All models come with the AMG adaptive sports suspension - steel in front, air suspension in back - and electronically controlled damping and Torque Vectoring Brake system, the S-Model also gets a limited-slip rear differential.

Turning to other visceral matters, the new front face features all-LED headlights flanking the AMG twin-blade grille, those placed above the "A-wing" design element forming the lower intakes. The standard model rides on 10-spoke, 19-inch titanium gray alloys, the S-Model getting high-sheen rim flanges to set it apart. Other ways to tell the models with the extra power are their red brake calipers, high-gloss treatment on the A-wing and "S" badge on the trunk. Inside, one finds a black interior set off by contrasting gray stitching throughout, silver seat belts, flat-topped and flat-bottomed Nappa leather steering wheel with Alcantara inserts, and a 1,200-watt, 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo.

We'll have more on it from the floor of the Detroit Auto Show. For now, amuse yourself with the detailed press release below and the high-res galleries of the E-Class AMG in its two flavors.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG gains 4Matic grip, still barking mad

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG gains 4Matic grip, still barking mad originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 Jan 2013 06:01:00 EST.
Just days after giving us the straight dope on its new, 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz has dropped a fast-moving E-Class family photo on its Facebook page, which happens to include the heretofore-unseen E63 AMG.

The image comes, unfortunately, with no information about the new E63, but we do get our first good look at the undisguised front fascia, wheels and body kit for the car - all aggressively revised versus the standard 2014 E-Class sedan. In fact, the face of the E63 has much more in common with that of its new Coupe sister than the basic four-door.

Car and Driver has previously stated that the 2014 E63 will make use of a twin-turbocharged V8 making 550 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque, and it's rumored the muscle sedan will offer all-wheel drive. As the new model is destined to debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week, we expect to have full information on the car in short order, too.
Mercedes previews 2014 E63 AMG with family-style teaser originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 14:00:00 EST.
It's still under a suit of camouflage, but Mercedes-Benz brought an E63 AMG to Southern California and invited Car and Driver columnist and former Editor-in-Chief Csaba Csere to ride shotgun. Before clicking in, Csere does a walkaround and notes the changes, most of which we've seen on the refreshed standard E-Class. He then takes a ride with the head of AMG, Olla Källenius, and asks questions that Källenius spends much of his time not exactly answering.

Things get more informative when Csere hops in the car with Tobias Moers, AMG's head of vehicle development, to find out exactly what separates the AMG E-Class from its less-heated brother. Csere especially wanted to know if the addition of 4MATIC killed the sporting intentions of the AMG sedan, and was pleased to find out that that wasn't - well, not exactly - the case.

Car and Driver also puts numbers to the coming sedan, pegging the 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 at 550 horsepower and 531 foot-pounds of torque, for 32 more horses and 15 more torques than the outgoing model. In Csere's written piece for the magazine, he predicts a sub-3.5-second time for the 0-to-60 mile-per-hour sprint (in the video it's predicted to be 3.3 seconds), with the run to 100 mph needing another 4.3 seconds. The quarter-mile is estimated to take 11.7 seconds, and gas mileage is expected to remain the same: 16 miles per gallon in the city, 24 mpg on the highway. For context, Car and Driver's split for the 2012 E63 AMG was 3.8 seconds for the sprint from naught to 60 mph, and a 12-second quarter mile.

The super-sedan will go on sale next summer, with more official specs being revealed at the Detroit Auto Show. In the meantime, there's the video below.
Continue reading Car and Driver gets a deeper look at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

Car and Driver gets a deeper look at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Dec 2012 13:28:00 EST.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is here, and it's had a lot more work done than just a little plastic surgery. Four years into the current model's lifecycle, the changes begin with the unusual step of a serious sheetmetal rearrangement: gone are the four headlights we've seen on the segment leader for 17 years, and gone are the light-relief pontoons over the rear wheels. In front, the one-piece headlights contain LED signatures that 'break' them into two segments, but the main lighting functions have been consolidated into a single lens. Full LED headlights will be available for the first time.

Around the lights, the new E-Class will come with a choice of two grille treatments: the luxury version is a showcase in chrome, with a three-bar center section topped by a Mercedes three-pointed star ornament on the hood; the sport version (pictured) is muted, with a two-bar center section supporting a large Mercedes emblem. Beneath either one of them, the lower fascia takes on a more aggressive shape with larger twin scoops outboard.

Down the body, the pontoon detail has been replaced by a stronger and lower trim line that runs to just beyond the rear wheels, and beneath that is another character line that describes wheel arches. Two-tone LED taillamps laid horizontally emphasize the sedan's width. Inside, the dash is separated into two zones with a horizontal element in one of three finishes, and features a new dash cluster and head unit design.

Among the eleven new and enhanced safety systems are some that borrow from the coming S-Class, the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera now able to build a three-dimensional view of what's ahead at a distance of up to 1,650 feet. The systems it serves can detect the speed and position of vehicles in front and those crossing, and can detect pedestrians.

Underhood, buyers can opt for a four-cylinder diesel with 190 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque in the E320 BlueTec, and pair it with 4Matic all-wheel drive for the first time. The E400 Hybrid also joins the ranks next year, bringing 24 city and 30 highway mpg with it. The V6 E3560 and V8 E550 will continue, and all come with stop/start and are are yoked to a seven-speed automatic.

We'll see them in person at the Detroit Auto Show, and that's where we'll get more information on the E63 AMG that will arrive in the Fall. There's a press release below chock full of details, and a high-res gallery above if you want your dessert first.
Continue reading 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class refreshed down to its sheetmetal

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class refreshed down to its sheetmetal originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Dec 2012 08:15:00 EST.
An alert enthusiast in Madrid, Spain was quick enough to snap a picture of what looks like the next-generation Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and send it to Autofacil. Caught staged during what appears to be a photo or video shoot, the reader, Victor Poza, wrote that after sundown the street was watered and the sedan was placed with a view of skyskrapers in the distance.

A few weeks ago, a camouflaged prototype was snapped at the Nürburgring, its face and sides mostly hidden. Poza's photo allows a glimpse of the single-piece headlights and the new upper and lower grille treatments - much cleaner and more expressive than the face of the current car. It looks like the AMG version gets a chromed lower element to set itself apart. And sure enough, the pontoon fenders have been retired to, well, wherever it is that pontoons live since it is no longer on the fenders of automobiles.

An intense refresh of the E-Class, at least one report has stated that all of the sheetmetal is new except for the roof and front doors. Underneath the skin will come more avant-garde gadgetry like the suspension that adjusts to the profile of the road based on the image provided by camera, and a night vision system that can detect pedestrians and animals. Inside is expected to be a greater use of leather, wood and metal.
Next-generation Mercedes E63 AMG caught undisguised in Spain originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Nov 2012 08:45:00 EST.
Spy photographers have sussed up a few images of the next Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG hustling around the Nürburgring. Given the strategic cladding stuck to the performance sedan's nose and tail, odds are buyers will see a facelifted version of the mightiest E-Class show up on dealer lots very soon. When it does, the AMG will feature a new fascia, complete with larger, more gaping air inlets to feed the 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood.

The new E63 will also benefit from the same updates we've seen crop up on the rest of the E-Class family, including single-piece headlights and a more upright, proud grille. Otherwise, changes appear to be slight. The reworked rear valance should allow for new exhaust exits out back, and the aft sheetmetal has been smoothed by nixing the old pontoon fenders. We can't wait to see this newest fast Benz without the armor.
Facelifted Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG spied originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 09:33:00 EST.
Ford and Holden have, just the two of them, been holding down the V8 Supercars fort for years now. The introduction of the Car of the Future regulations, which puts carmaker body panels on top of a generic chassis, induced Nissan Australia to join the party in 2013 with four of its Altima sedans. Chrysler Group Australia recently said it would not be lining up. So did Mercedes-Benz Australia, but an acquisition and an international agreement between Erebus Motorsports, Stone Brothers Racing and AMG's Customer Sports Program run by HWA means E63 AMGs will be on the starting line for the first race of 2013.

SBR has been in V8SC since 1998, the entire time with Ford, and won three championships with The Blue Oval, while Erebus runs SLS AMG GT3 coupes in the Australian GT Championship. Erebus bought SBR and its two licenses and grandfathered the rights to the third license that SBR has a lease on, then worked out a deal with AMG to get factory support. That support will come via HWA, the company run by AMG co-founder Hans Werner Aufrecht, that also preps Mercedes DTM cars.

As with Nissan, which shrunk the displacement of its Nissan Motorsport VK56DE V8 from 5.6 liters to 5.0 liters to satisfy V8SC regs, the E63 AMG motor will be a 5.0-liter iteration of the 6.2-liter V8 from Erebus' SLS AMG GT3 racer. Final parity spec for the AMG engine is still being sorted out with the governing body, and even though other makers' cars have been unveiled and on the track, the AMG engine still hasn't made it to the dyno. Even so, the privately funded team has been provided the necessary millions to make it to the starting gate by Erebus owner Betty Klimenko, and SBR has proved that it knows how to build a car.

Swallowed up in all the changes coming to the sport had been Holden, but not anymore. The Holden Racing Team took the hullabaloo of the Erebus-SBR as an excuse to unveil its new matte black and gold Commodore, and you can watch the covers pulled back in the video below.
Continue reading Mercedes E63 AMGs will race in Australia's V8 Supercar series next season, Holden debuts new Commodore race car

Mercedes E63 AMGs will race in Australia's V8 Supercar series next season, Holden debuts new Commodore race car originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Sep 2012 09:59:00 EST.
Station wagons, as pointed out by ex-Autoblogger Jonny Lieberman, are boring. "It's the penalty you pay for falling in love and having children," he says.

Sure, just so long as your children like to go fast, at least when the chosen conveyance to move those booster seats from Point A to Point B is either the wagon version of the Cadillac CTS-V or Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, as tested by Motor Trend in the video you'll see after the break.

Without spoiling any of the salient details, we'll say that one car was a wee bit quicker, crossing the finish line a scant 79 feet ahead of its rival after a half-mile of acceleration to speeds surpassing 150 miles per hour, while the other was deemed the overall better car for enthusiast drivers.

Which was which? See the video below for all the answers you crave, along with some brilliant exhaust notes from these two rare wagon-shaped beasts.
Continue reading Motor Trend pits Cadillac CTS-V vs Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG in wagon-off

Motor Trend pits Cadillac CTS-V vs Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG in wagon-off originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 19:59:00 EST.
The latest BMW M5, Jaguar XFR, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Porsche Panamera S all have lots of things in common. They all have four doors, V8 engines underhood, hail from high-end European automakers known for luxury and performance and can all be had for a wee bit under $100,000.

But which one is fastest?

Well, that depends on how you're planning to measure speed. Do you mean top speed? The time it takes to circle a given race track? Or do you mean in a drag race, the quintessential way to compare a car's ability to accelerate in a straight line?

If that's the case, you'll find your answer in the video after the break. You'll see each of the aforementioned automobiles lined up against one another, racing flat-out over the distance of 1,000 meters.

Mercedes-Benz is reportedly facing a class-action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey for alleged defects in the company's M156 V8. According to the plaintiffs, premature internal wear occurs because the engine uses cast nodular iron camshafts and 9310-grade steel valves. Something about that combination causes early failure, either due to improper offset of the components or inadequate heat treating. The plaintiffs also allege that Mercedes-Benz and AMG have known about the issue since 2007, when Daimler released a service bulletin on the problem. At this point, it's unclear how many engines this alleged defect covers, or exactly when or if the lawsuit will go to trial.

The M156 V8 - one of the snarliest and best-sounding engines we've ever driven - has served as the powerhouse for a wide range of AMG vehicles. The 6.3-liter lump actually displaces 6.2 liters, but churns out 525 horsepower in its newest iteration. The engine has found its way into vehicles like the C63 AMG, E63 AMG, ML63 AMG and SL63 AMG, among others. It's an interesting time for Germany's premium performers here in North America. Audi isn't offering any RS models - at least not until the long wait for its TT RS ends. BMW is still cruising along with M3 sales and its new price-leader 1 Series M Coupe while we look forward to the next M5 in May 2012. Over at Porsche, the 911, after a record 30 variations on the 997 theme, is almost ready to give way to the 991 generation - a car we expect to test this fall.

Into this lull before the next blitzkrieg jumps the revamped 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. And while we've just driven it in idyllic southern France, it won't actually arrive in the U.S. until mid-September. At least the folks in Affalterbach assure us that U.S. dealers will continue to get a steady stream of the current (and much loved) E63 right up until this freshened one arrives. Of course, if you can't wait for the 2012 E63, there are similar AMG treatments on sale in the CLS-, CL- and S-Class.

For those fortunate few who already have one of the final 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 E63s on order, DO NOT CANCEL! Even though this new E63 with its M157 biturbo 5.5-liter V8 is a thing of greatness, we so love the outgoing car's booming M156 powerplant that you should harbor no regrets in welcoming the 2011 model into your garage. Still, we'd be lying if we didn't report that the updated model is slightly improved in certain ways. Better still, Mercedes-Benz is spreading the message that the E63's base pricing will not go up at all, so it should still start at $87,600.

2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 11:58:00 EST. According to a leaked dealer order guide for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class range, we red-blooded Yankees might be able to once again sink our teeth into the super-hot E63 AMG Estate. As you'll recall, Mercedes-Benz decided not to offer the new-for-2010 E63 wagon here in the States, but that is wrong is reportedly being righted for 2012. BenzBoost.com reports that the cargo-hauling AMG stunner will be available for U.S. customers later this year, powered by the same twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 that debuted in the E63 sedan at last month's New York Auto Show, complete with start/stop technology and mated to a seven-speed MCT dual-clutch transmission.

We can already picture the inevitable E63 AMG Wagon vs. Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon battle, and it looks awesome.

In other E-Class news, BenzBoost reports that the E550 sedan - which gets a new 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 - will only be available with 4Matic all-wheel drive. A similar move was made to the 2011 CL550 coupe, which uses the same engine and is no longer available in a two-wheel-drive configuration. Stay tuned for the official details later this year.

2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will offer E63 AMG wagon, AWD-only E550 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 May 2011 15:58:00 EST. AMG started putting wrenches to Benzes back in 1967, and 44 years later we're still fawning over its products. From the C to the E and all the way up to the SLS, Mercedes-Benz vehicles that wear those three letters on the back are sure to get our blood flowing. The two German companies have formed a valuable partnership, and we expect more amazing vehicles for years to come.

Before looking too deep into the future, however, it's time to take a look at the past. Mercedes-Benz has prepared a video that provides a brief visual history lesson. The text in the video may have been ported over courtesy of Google Translate, but the meaning is clearly conveyed. Click past the jump to view a video timeline of AMG's history.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz presents The History of AMG

Mercedes-Benz presents The History of AMG originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 May 2011 12:32:00 EST.
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has been unwrapped at the New York Auto Show having gained a new, more economical lease on life thanks to the brand's 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8. For 2012, Mercedes-Benz is offering the mill in two levels of crazy, with either 518 horsepower in the regular E63, or 550 if you opt for the AMG sport package. That much grunt shuffles the standard car to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds on to a top speed of 155 mph, or 4.3 seconds and 186 mph if you drop the extra coin for the sport pack.

Like its kissing but shapelier cousin, the CLS63 AMG, the 5.5-liter engine channels its substantial resources through AMG's Speedshift MCT seven-speed transmission. We've sampled and enjoyed the unusual gearbox before, and this one also has a "Controlled Efficiency" mode, which is Mercedes-speak for a stop-start function.

Despite the looney power and performance figures, Mercedes says its big sedan is 22 percent more efficient than last year's model, thanks to the new powerplant. To help keep things green(ish), the new heart sports spray-guided direct injection thanks to a set of piezo injectors. Mercedes has even gone so far as to develop an eco-friendly power steering setup which saves fuel by only drawing power when the wheel is being turned.

Inside, the car gets a new sports steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles and flat top and bottom sections. For those who go with the AMG sport package, the wheel is trimmed in Alcantara for the last word in racy luxury.

Mercedes-Benz has released the skinny on the upgrades the company has planned for next year's E63 AMG, at least for European buyers. According to the German automaker, the four-door will come from the factory with an extra 11 horsepower, thanks largely to new tuning. That bumps the final figure to 525 ponies, though the Silver Arrow claims that it has managed to increase the mill's efficiency as well - cutting consumption by a full 12 percent. Of course, that's assuming that you can keep from bumping the redline on that big 6.3-liter V8 every time you leave a stoplight, something you're sure to want to do.

We're not sure whether buyers will actually be able to feel that 11 horsepower bump, either, but odds are that they will notice some key changes to the interior. Mercedes-Benz is offering the 2011 E63 AMG with a slew of interior niceties as standard equipment. The company has skinned the dash and door panels in Artico leather, and the center console will henceforth be dipped in a piano black lacquer finish for good measure - both of which used to be optional. We can't speak for the power and efficiency updates, but we have confirmed with Benz reps in the States that the interior upgrades are headed to U.S. showrooms, so chances are this is a good look at what we can expect when the 2011 E63 AMG hits our shores. Hit the jump for the official press release.
Top Gear pits the Chevrolet Camaro vs. Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG - click above to watch the video

Conducting utterly inappropriate comparison tests is completely par for the course at Top Gear. After all, these were the guys that pitted a Ford Fiesta against a Chevrolet Corvette and a Jaguar XK120 against a Vincent Black Shadow and a train. In this week's latest episode Richard Hammond samples the new Chevrolet Camaro SS with its lovely 6.2-liter small-block V8 and then pulls out a slightly different kind of 6.2-liter V8 powered car.

Frankly, we doubt many (if any!) people are actually cross-shopping the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG against the Camaro SS, but it sure is entertaining to watch the big German power-sliding around the air-strip test track at the hands of The Stig. With any luck, this episode will be the last time that we get to hear the Stig lapping to the less-than-dulcet tones of the vuvuzela. See how the Camaro fares against the E63 by watching the video after the jump.
